I love dragon shifters, so when I spot a book with dragons on the cover, mentioned, and/or featured in some way I will always check the book out.

Tempting the Dragon was my first Karen Whiddon novel. It’s also a stand-a-lone and not part of a series.

This novel was not what I had expected, which is good, I was surprisingly surprised at the world and supernatural characters presented to the reader. The characters where enjoyable and the world set up was captivating. The story had some fascinating and engaging parts that kept me entertained. The secondary characters in this novel where entertaining and great to read about too. I would love to see more of the secondary characters, because there seem to be some possibilities there for future stories.

Rance is looking for a mystical lake creature, when he meets Jade. Rance is sweet in how he cares so much for his step-daughter, but you can tell that he’s a man running from his demons and not looking to put them away and settle down. Jade, was a mystery until things started to come out about her and her family. The romance between Rance and Jade was slow in building, but the chemistry was scorching between them.

The only thing that bothered me a little was that somethings seem to wrap up a little too easily.

I had a delightful time reading Tempting the Dragon. I would recommend this novel to paranormal romance lovers who like a little mystery with their romance and a verity of supernaturals.

I love dragon shifters and anytime I spot a romance book featuring a dragon I snag it. Karen Whiddon’s Tempting the Dragon also had a sexy cover so I didn't even have to read the description before deciding I wanted it in my greedy little hands. I believe I have read a few of Karen Whitton’s books but it has been a while. She's now on my list of must read authors and I'll be following her releases.

Tempting the Dragon had everything I look for in a good story and once I picked it up I didn't put it down until I finished. It had dragons, wolves, fairies and other paranormal creatures and I loved the world Karen Whiddon created in this book. Rance and Jade meet when Rance comes into Jade’s town to investigate a mythical lake creature he wants to photograph for his step-daughter. An adventure then ensues that's takes the reader on a mysterious and exciting journey with the characters. Rance and Jade’s chemistry was scorching hot but the relationship was a slow build. The storyline was unique. I kept flipping the pages to see what would happen next and trying to figure out the different mysteries. Plus did I mention that Rance a is sexy dragon shifter who loves his step-daughter like she’s his own blood and he's a photojournalist?

I really enjoyed this one and I recommend this book for paranormal romance lovers looking for a little mystery with their paranormal romance. Tempting the Dragon is a standalone and not part of a series. I'd love to read about some of the secondary characters in this book though. I want more and think there are several possible storylines in this world Karen Whiddon could create for us. I’ll definitely be following her releases to see if she goes back to this world.

Not as intense as most of the other books in the series, but still provides a well developed world in which paranormal beings exist. This is a well written book with a multi layered serets. Each is holding secrets that aid in revealing the truth of the creature Jade and her people protect and the strange happennings in their small town. It is a stand alone novel that lovers of the shape shifting genre will enjoy.

My rating of "Tempting The Dragon" is 4 out of 5 stars.

Convoluted story

This story had a great premise but never followed through. There are just so much lag in events and the characters are not very engaging.

Rance Sleighter is a photo journalist. He promises his very ill step-daughter that he will get a photograph of a lake monster for her. He has investigated some of the other lakes rumored to have monsters and is now in the small town of Forestwood, New York hoping to finally end his search.

Jade Burnett and her family have a witchy reputation with the town. And some of the Burnetts have indeed been guardian to a lake monster over the years. Townspeople tell Rance to go talk to Jade about the lake monster rather than wasting their time.

Rance and Jade meet in a restaurant in town and get off on the wrong foot. Of course this will not be the only thing to get in the way of their developing a loving relationship. Family and fae will too, for a minimum.

I wasn't thrilled with what comes off initially as insta-love, but really is more insta-lust. The loving relationship has to be built over the course of the book. And Rance just isn't very good at it. Despite what he is doing for his step-daughter, he is somewhat self-centered and very much into protecting himself from hurt.

The subplot of dealing with the fae is good. It was very straight forward. My only objection to this part of the book was that things seemed to be settled too easily.

The pace of the book is good and the characters are interesting. There is suspense as to whether or not Rance will be allowed to meet the monster as well as a few other things. I found myself reading quickly to find out what happens next.

This is a standalone novel. I thought this was a good story. It's well written. I give it 4 stars out of 5. It's good, but not great. Still, if you enjoy books about shifters, fae, and romance, then this would be a good book for you. It's definitely light reading, but in a good way.

3 1/2 - 4....

As much as I love, and usually pick up, Harlequin Nocturne books, they can be kind of hit or miss for me. Tempting the Dragon went back and forth on that spectrum through much of the book. *sigh* That doesn't mean the I didn't enjoy it for the most part though.

Karen Whiddon gave a unique perspective to dragons in the world she created for Tempting the Dragon. Both Jade and Rance had secrets to keep. I understood Rance's urgency in his search, but I also understood Jade's unwillingness to give away her secret. As a couple, they didn't seem to be a very good match, but they kind of grew on me as the story progressed.

A couple of loose ends, timeline issues and some other tiny blips are responsible for a lower rating, but since I read this as an ARC, I don't want to be too critical. All in all, Tempting the Dragon was a unique paranormal romance with a few unexpected twists, more than a little suspense and just enough heat to keep things interesting.

I received Tempting the Dragon in exchange for a fair and honest review.

*******************MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*********************

Rance can upfront and bold at certain times, "befuddled, bemused and aroused, he let his gaze rake over her. Damn. “I want you.” Once said, he couldn’t take the words back. Hell, he didn’t even want to." Rance is well an idiot at times, “I complimented her. Called her generous and giving. Both are true.” Though he didn’t want to face the rest of it, he knew he had to. “And then I asked her to become my wife. That alone should tell her how I feel about her.” I liked this book, Rance was a special man but I loved him.

I enjoyed this paranormal featuring a "lake creature", its protectors, and an investigative reporter. I thought it had a sense of humor.
