This is different from what I normally read -it came recommended via a site that said that it was one of the best new series of its release year and shouldn't be missed. I think it's shoujo...?
So, I got the first 3 vols for my library and gave it a shot today. While the first chapter (namely, the content surrounding the tsukumogami) was a little rough, I was invested by chapter 3. Def will pick up the next volume and I'm curious where this will go from the initial plot point and it's identifiable variants :)
The concept of spirits inhabiting objects and using those objects to fight as a part of their human bodies is interesting. Still, as a first volume, it felt a little slow. It's probably not my kind of manga, but since it might be interesting to my students, I'll give a couple other volumes a try.
As for anything problematic for middle school, when the spirit's objects are broken, their human parts are split in half and it appears kind of violent -- but because they are actually objects, it kind of makes it not so uncomfortable, if that makes sense? One of the main spirits gets hurt and kind of splatters -- looking like blood-- which could be considered inappropriate for middle school, but he comes back to life again shortly after. Lastly, the main character reminisces about his dead siblinging a lot and revisits the image for their dead bodies, but they aren't shown in any particular detail, just shadowed.
I think this volume will probably be appropriate for 8th grade at my (rough-ish) middle school and at high school too. Need to read more to be sure they don't get too violent though.
Luckily, there was no fan service, innuendo, or other sexually inappropriate things that sometimes slip by in manga. All female characters are dressed appropriately and none with overly large anatomy.
This is an interesting take on a well-used trope, exorcists and spirits, in this case called tsukumogami. Hyoma has good reasons to hate the spirits to the point his grandfather fears what Hyoma might become so he sends his grandson to Botan, a young woman who lives with multiple highly protective tsukumogami.
This goes as well as one could expect. Botan struggles to break through Hyoma's prejudices before he's hurt by them or by her tsukumogami or by others who would seek to hurt them both (which is what Hyoma expects of all spirits. He sees them as purely destructive forces).
Botan learns Hyoma isn't moved merely out of hatred. He has a deep desire to protect and her own tsukumogami want to nurture that as Hyoma isn't exactly wrong. A lot of spirits are dangerous.
The art in this is very nice and I'm curious as to where it's going.
Read in one sitting. Occasionally hard to follow - a lot of characters and lore introduced pretty breezily, and action scenes took a little parsing. But for manga readers who like ghosts/folklore, this could be a big hit. Seeing the character designs of different tsukumogami (spirits bonded to an object - in this manga rendered like humans with object-specific characteristics and powers) is fun - there's that X-Men-like appeal of seeing new characters and abilities.
Tagged "queer" because one of the main cast (though not one of the two leads) expresses a preference for women (and appears to be a woman, though when you're a ghost/made of ink, what is gender rly).
Interesting concept about spirits that can live and feel as humans but this is not usually the case. About a boy who has to overcome his extreme hatred of these spirits and has been sent to live with them for a year. Not sure I loved all the characters so far but hopefully with more volumes I’ll get to know them better.
Not bad at all. I smell found family and something tragic bound to happen. The manga reminds me of Noragami. The characters seems interesting and the main characters especially are a very different so I’m intrigued to see how they will play it out. I don’t give 4 full stars bc I feel some parts were a bit too slow pace wise and /or confusing.
Promising setup. The rules around the supernatural creatures seem clear enough, and the main character's grudge is understandable. Unfortunately, I just didn't get attached to any of the characters in this volume, probably because it's a fairly large cast.
This was good! I love how intense Hyoma is, and for a good reason, but that he's also willing to listen and possibly change. My favorite moment was near the end, when he lost it and literally tore through all his enemies. Wow.
There's a lot of things about this that SHOULD appeal to me but... nothing really clicked. The art was pretty meh, except for the action scenes that were just too hard to follow. Our MC was just a total jerk and I couldn't stand him. I'm not sure I'm interested enough to want to give vol 2 a shot.
Giving this series a last chance once I buy V2 and then decide if I should drop it or not. Honestly it didn't leave me anything.
I found the drawings super duper basic with just the essential lines and nothing more, there aren't many backgrounds either. I don't know, I was excited to start this but fell very flat since the beginning. There wasn't a character I liked in particular nor the main story seemed interesting enough. It had a good premise but in the end I didn't really get the purpose of what I was reading, making me feel distracted and distant.
