Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.
In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.
Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.
In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".
In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.
In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.
In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[
After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.
If the world becomes a little more conscious, soldiers will throw away their arms and hug each other, sit down together under a tree and gossip. The politicians cannot force all the armies to kill, to murder. Neither can the popes, the religious leaders convince anybody that for God’s sake you have to kill. Strange… because God has created everybody. Whomsoever you are killing, you are killing God’s creation. If it is true that God created the world, then there should be no war – it is one family; there should be no nations. These are immoral things: the nations, the religions, anything that discriminates against people and creates conflict.
A man of awareness will not be greedy, because he will be able to see that his greed will create poverty; and the people who will be starving and dying through poverty are his brothers and sisters. It does not matter whether they live in Ethiopia or in India; it does not matter whether their skin is white or black.

Thy kingdom come. Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind

If there is only one book that I am allowed to read, let it be this one...
It must be one of the shortest philosophical book of the world, just a short story which even majority of people in India have forgotten. A very basic story, but with a profound learning - maybe the deepest one.
It is such a plain and simple truth - the truth of life, the ultimate knowledge that many of us attempt to seek, some spending they whole of their life pursuing this endevor. One need to reach a certain point in life to understand this simple, yet profound message (it has nothing to do with age or position or education or material/ non-material possessions).
1. Self is beyond the physical body or spiritual mind or the knowledge of self - these are all temporary things. The true Self (Atma/ Soul) is pure consciousness, eteranal & unaffected by this material world. The true reality of life is an unchanging Identity. 2. Maya/ illusion is what we generally experience from the moment we are born to the moment we leave this physical body - Everything is Maya/ illustion - projection of our own mind, like the dreams we have while we are asleep (we are dreaming even when we are awake). Letting go of all bondages - longing for something, grieving about someone, rejecting or holding on to something is the key. Let Go and you will be free... 3. Enlightenment/ Libration is instant and hassle free. As soon as we accept the reality of this world/ our own self and refuse to be confused by the Maya/ Illustion all around us, we are free. No need to chase mirages all through our life. 4. Destroy Ego - forget oneself - there is no 'I' - I am just a tiny part of this universe. Just be that. Just live the life as an observer, not a doer... 5. Stay Calm - Nothing can affect me, pleasure or pain, success or failure, these all concepts are are own creations in this illusionary world. One need to just watch the things unfold, without letting them impact self...
This is the whole essence of Gita, as told by Ashtavakra to Kind Janak...
The book gives some good ideas.1) So called repetition of Name of God is useless.1) Dronacharya is the real Shudra. Ekalavya is the real Brahmin. To-date Hindus consider Dronacharya as a Guru Par Excellence. He is not worth calling a Human being.3) Certainly a Guru is needed to beget the flow of blessings from the creation.4) Ashtavakra is the Top most Guru.He stands on par with Jesus, Socrates,Mahavir and Buddha.5) Be witness to the happenings around you.It will become itself.6)Manifestation of enlightenment is in many ways. Can you make it for yourself whether you are in receipt of it? Can you contain it when received? Be prepared physically and mentally to be enlightened and sustain its bliss. Enlightenment can happen to anybody at any point of time.Develop that consciousness.Be Aware.Nice book.I am blessed. Thanks to Osho.
First spiritual reading which I undertook was 'I am that' from Nisargadutt Mahraj. What Osho says here is exactly the same what Nisargadutt preached. Osho explains it to us through Ashtavakra who happened to be Janak's Guru. The crux of the book is : Ek Ongkar satnam (Sound of Aum is 'the truth') karta Purukh (The Doer) Nibhau Nirvair (WIthout fear, without hate/animosity) Akal moorat ( The formless) ajooni sabhan(Free from the circle of life and death, omnipresent) Gur Prasad (Such is the Guru Grace)- Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Rest all is commentary, probably to boost the intellect. Hari Om tat sat
We are persuaded to be sinners so they can redeem us. People—laden with guilt and apprehension about the afterlife—incessantly stagger to death. Peace is relinquished, and turmoil becomes prevalent in the trajectory of life.
Practice is bondage, so are rituals. Leap. Trust your creed, not the society. Question the absurdity and irrationality. Liberation is bliss.
Frolic around the flora and fauna as we are all one. Nature.
Very lucid and understandable. Osho's speaking style is great and inimitable. This book a compilation of his discourses on Ashtavakra Gita. The explanations and examples by Osho lend a lease of life to the original verses. The original verses are concise and to the point, which makes them difficult to comprehend. Osho simplifies and drives home the point - Aham Brahmasmi - I am That.
It's a commentary on the Ashtavakra Gita, an advanced text of the Vedanta school of philosophy. Any words to describe Ashtavakra will miss the point, so not even trying.
