Ghost Walk

Rate this book
Grace Rivera just wants to be normal. She’s the only member of her spell-casting, fortune-telling family who isn’t hunting unicorns or trying to discover the lost recipe for Troll Powder. Trained as a crime scene investigator, she believes in science and cold, hard facts. And right now, the cold, hard facts are telling Grace that she’s lost her mind. It started last July, when she “hallucinated” that she traveled back in time to relive a crime before it had even happened. Her resulting breakdown cost Grace her forensics job, so now she’s stuck working as a tour guide in her Revolutionary War themed hometown. After a year of rebuilding her life, she’s finally convincing herself that she might just have a chance to be normal, again. …Until a handsome, sarcastic, and really real seeming ghost shows up on her Ghost Walk, anyway.

Captain James Riordan was unjustly hanged for murder on July 4th 1789. Ever since then, he’s been haunting the streets on Harrisonburg, Virginia, trying to find some way to clear his name. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to prove his innocence as an incorporeal ghost, so mostly he whiles away his un-life watching teen soaps on TV and tagging along on Harrisonburg’s nightly Ghost Walk. The tour is supposed to tell visitors spooky stories about the historic town. On this particular night, though, there’s a new tour guide leading the group. She’s terrible at waving scary tales. She looks like a Sunday school teacher. She’s spreading slanderous lies about him. …And she’s the first person in centuries that can actually see him.

Now Grace and Jamie are working together to solve a two hundred year old crime. From the eighteenth century and back again, the two of them are determined to clear Jamie’s name and set history right. Even if it means some time-traveling forensics work. Even if it means Grace has to listen to Jamie lament his lost pirate’s treasure (a lot) and Jamie is frustrated because he can’t physically touch the one person in the world he’s sure is his. Even if it means dealing with Grace’s stalking ex-boyfriend, her crazy relatives, and the Rivera’s lost recipe for Troll Powder. …And especially if it means a scoundrel of a ghost and girl who just wants to be normal somehow fall in love along the way.

THIS FUCKING BOOK, OH MY GOD!! I just want to out front say that I loved every single second of Ghost Walk. This was a perfect contender 5 star for me. The characters were so damn likeable, the romance was swoon worthy, the hero was Scottish and I adored every word that came out of his mouth, and the plot was even better.

Ghost Walk is set in the summer during the 4th of July (which is Independence Day in America) where our heroine, Grace, works as a tour guide in a New England colony town open for tourism. On one tour she takes, she meets our hero, Jamie, a ghost of a man who was a notorious pirate and alleged serial killer back before America was just colonies. Jamie wants Grace to help prove his innocence of the murder s he didn’t commit, and Grace believes she’s going insane. Time travel and a murder mystery follows.

Not only was this plot perfection, but I also just adored these characters, on their own and together. Jamie and Grace were perfect for each other, and I loved Jamie so so much. This is another golden retriever man, and if you guys are regulars here, you know I adore lovable himbo idiots. Jamie loved and protected Grace the whole time, while also being the perfect amount of an Alpha hero. I usually hate the whole ”you’re mine” B.S., but on Jamie it just worked.

I will say I did guess the killer and plot twist at the end, but I wasn’t really here for the mystery. I was here for Jamie and Grace, and this author exceeded in writing them without fail. I know this book takes place in the middle of summer, but this was absolutely the perfect cozy, Fall read. I absolutely adored everything about this book and I cannot believe how severely underrated it is. Everyone read this book, this is absolutely going to make it on my favorites of the year list.

5 stars

This book had pretty much everything I could want in a book. Definitely is going in my favorites. Her humor, as always, is on point. I just hate waiting for her releases. If she could cut off all her friends and relatives, and become a writing hermit- that releases something every week, I might be satisfied. But alas, my husband tells me that that is unreasonable.

wow. I'm so utterly in love. How is this hidden gem so underrated?!
This is a compilation of everything I can possibly like: paranormal romance and fated mates, time-travel, mystery and crime solving, a ghost who is a PIRATE from the 18th century (and possessive as hell), magic and a spell for menstrual cramps.. perfect!

The banter is amazing and Jamie is so sweet and funny :) (you don't even need to try, Captain, we approve of you already!)
His piracy vibes are.. wow.. Pirates are definitely my type now.

The Riveras remind me of The Addams family (a more colorful and friendlier version tho), I like them and their quirky names.

I enjoyed the plot so much. The mystery is a subplot tho, and the author obviously wants us to figure out who the killer is before they do, so it wasn't hard to know but still entertaining.

Usually I hate insta-love in romance, but here they are fated to meet and fall in love (hence Grace's ability to see him and do time travel which is a rare and recessive talent according to Aunt Serenity) and they recongized each other almost immediately, so I eagerly accepted it although the whole timeline was just four days! the man was already calling her "wife" before even knowing her name😭

Also, I couldn't really wrap my mind around the fact that they got intimate while he was still a GHOST! That was insane and..creative tbh. I shamefully liked it.

Spelling mistakes is the only issue with this book but it still deserves a solid five.

had to DNF

So this is a hard book for me to give up on. I’ve read this author before and I really like her writing style and her super funky unique plots, which is why I keep reading her books, even tho she doesn’t have virgin heroines. A book has to be REEEEAAALLLYY interesting and cute for me to do that.

This book also has a very unique plot. The hero is a ghost who was hanged for the murder of 3 women…in 1789. Americas first serial killer as it were. The heroine is a former forensic tech in the modern era. And the first person able to see and hear the ghostly hero.

All good so far.

But unfortunately I just couldn’t take one more reference to how the hero had been “waiting” for the right one…but “waiting” with his cock shoved into every random STD-trap whore’s vagina he can find? Uhhh, no. That’s not waiting at all. It’s the exact opposite of waiting

And what made it worse were the pathetic excuses for why the Zero’s unfaithful dick was constantly being shoved into skank pussy. “She doesn’t belong to me, we’re just passing the time.” Was this supposed to make the Zero’s trashiness any more palatable? He didn’t care about these std-traps he was fucking, they were just convenient cum dumps to relieve his balls into. Sticking his dick into overused whore pussy to pass the time, while pretending to “wait” for ones true love is not just unconvincing and laughable, but disturbing and repulsive at worst. And it’s an egregious betrayal of the woman he’s waiting for.

Somehow the excuse that his sexual exploits “didn’t mean anything” because he was just having fun, while “waiting” for his true love was supposed to make it all better.

It didn’t. So I DNFed

Unfortunately I think I need to give up on this author.

This was an absolute crazy-ass-fun-time. It's a romance, paranormal, time-travel, mystery, action, comedy, monster novel.

Romance: It didn't give me the feels in my chest, but the romance was very sweet. I don't know if I caught everything, but I did notice her repeated, multiple unending mentions of how attractive he was...until she actually fell in love with *him*. And she never once called him Jamie until the moment she accepted he was, in fact, a ghost. The list of nicknames was amusing.

Action: Technically this should have a TW for an attempted SA scene. But it was similar to the romance in that it wasn't emotional to me. There was never any doubt that she'd get out of the situation.

Paranormal: Ghosts, magic, spells, that crazy Rivera family and (largely) unpredictable time-travel. So fun.

Mystery: OK. I do not read primarily mystery novels. But I knew almost from the start who the killer was, which made some of the plot drag for me. I mean, it's not Agatha Christie for goodness sake.

Monster: Unsexy Troll. 'Nuf said.

Comedy: This is the main thing at which Cassandra Gannon excells. Her style of humor is *somewhat* sophisticated humor. It doesn't have to hit you over the head to let you know it's funny. I hate when authors write their characters laughing at a joke. Let ME do the laughing. Don't tell me what's funny. CG never insults the reader's intelligence like that.

You just can't finish a Cassandra Gannon book without a smile on your face and joy in your heart.

I like the premise of this but the story itself was underwhelming and the dialogue repetitive.

The killer (in the past timeline) was pretty obvious from the start. Their motivation of the murders was interesting but the troll powder thing in the 'final battle' scene was so ludicrous, I struggled to get through it. The antagonists of the story (killer, ex-boyfriend, townspeople) were one-dimensional.

Far too many mentions of the MMC sleeping around (although it's relevant to the plot somewhat) and I especially dislike the trope of the FMC having had mediocre sex until the MMC 🙄.

Positive: Gannon's writing is entertaining and humorous as always.

Loved it ! This book was a quick, fun read with some time travel here and there, magic, a ghost and a love story with a sub plot of "who done it". Perfect for fall or if you are looking for a romance with halloween-y vibe !

The ending was a bit easy and weird, and the romance kinda insta love-ish (fated mate and all), but I still had a great time reading this one, so it's a 5/5 for me ! 📖

If you watched ABC’s beloved TV show “Once Upon a Time”, loved the romance between Emma and Hook and thought to yourself “DAMN, I wish I could read 100,000+ words of JUST them” this is the book for you.

Alternatively, if you have ever read any Captain Swan fanfiction, this is the book for you.

Ghost Walk is one of Gannon’s rare stand-alone novels. We follow our MC Grace, a retired crime-scene investigator and witch (??) when she is suddenly able to see the ghost of Jamie Riordan, a prolific pirate and rake from 1789 who claims he was wrongfully hung for the murder of three women. Grace promises to help Jamie solve his case and in exchange, he promises to leave her alone.

I’m going to be so for real now. I didn’t give one flying fuck about the mystery they were solving so I can’t speak on the quality of that. I’m sure it was great because Gannon has proved to me that not only is she great at writing romance, but she’s great at writing mysteries. I, however, was just there for the boinking. Because I am a depraved piece of filth. It was superb.

Gannon writes an excellent desperate, frothing at the mouth, MMC who is always paired with a smart, quick-mouthed FMC. She never misses.

I recognize that editors can be expensive, but my God this book needs one. Improper formatting, misspellings, various grammatical issues, etc. plague every single page. Had to DNF at 43% because I couldn't force myself to continue. The premise is an interesting one; I'll give it that. But very little about this book makes sense. From utterly bizarre character choices to inconsistent characterization (one page, Jamie is nonplussed by the idea of a straightjacket, and a mere two pages later has a full understanding of modern film) to grievously unpolished writing, I 100% do not recommend if you want your story to be at all well-written. It honestly feels like a NaNo novel that never actually went through any sort of editing process, even by the author herself. Big oof, y'all.

In-depth review to come. This was my favorite book of 2023 and is still one of my favorites in 2024.

Original review:

I absolutely fucking loved this book. The characters were as always, perfectly crazy and lovable.

Gannon has an extreme talent for creating these truly amazing stories that are a mix of fantasy, history, and contemporary romance. This book is definitely one of her best works.

I was lured in by the interesting concept, and then spent the majority of my time rolling my eyes at Jamie and Grace and/or wanting to grab them and shake them and tell them to stop being dumb. I can only take so much second-hand embarrassment from watching characters make terrible decisions.
I was holding out for the romance, but their relationship really had no depth beyond Jamie being insistent that he was going to have Grace no matter what because she was his (I like a little possessiveness as much as the next person, but his strayed too far into “ick” territory for me), and Grace having this childhood crush on him from her history textbooks that becomes love very quickly.
The suddenness of the third act breakup, where Jamie’s possessive desire abruptly changes into concern for her wellbeing that culminates in his self-sacrificing “you deserve someone who isn’t a ghost” felt so out of left field that I just couldn’t take it anymore.
This, on top of the fact that the book seriously struggled from a lack of editing (typos, grammatical errors, and character inconsistencies) has me throwing in the towel early.

Dual POV | fated, instalove
I enjoyed the time travel component and the mystery of the serial killer and trying to solve it. Overall was a bit camp but well written. Down from 3 stars because I wasn’t into the sheer number of times “she’s MINE” and thoughts surrounding it were written out. It was a bit drawn out and repetitive in areas.

Not everything makes sense but a fun ride nonetheless. I love how the final confrontation with the killer took an unexpected route. I was ready for dark and thrilling when the author went for camp. And I love that about Ghost Walk.

I could care less that this was absolutely ridiculous. She got with the ghost of a Scottish pirate who was wrongfully accused of murder in 1789 and then helps solve the mystery. You're gonna sit there and tell me you don't want to know HOW????

I did it! I finished a book I should have dnf'd the moment I had started it!

Where do I even find books like that? One of the questions we will never find an answer to. But honestly, I was so intrigued by the premise. I did not read the detailed description, as is my habit, but I remembered the gist when I started reading: he is a ghost from the 18th century, she is a modern woman, and there is some drama. Turned out there is A LOT OF drama: there's a murder investigation, there's time travelling, there's a family of weirdos who do magic and sell spells and potions. And while the heroine is part of the said family and actually uses some spells and potions, she STILL does not believe in ghosts and anything supernatural. So there's some stupidity in the mix, as you can tell.

The romance was not really to my liking, since this pirate ghost guy has this caveman mentality when they think of women as objects that belong to them that I absolutely love and adore in a man, yay!!! But he is a red-head with blue (not just blue, sorry, but patriot blue!) eyes, so I was kinda invested at first. The whole ghost mechanic was delightful, in fact: since he can move around and has been actually existing as a ghost through time, he is a bit up to date with technology and pop culture. He even enjoys watching TV shows, which I liked a lot.

The love dynamic was not my favourite due to the fact that the heroine is just NOT like other girls. She is smart, she is shy, she is a 'Sunday school teacher' (this description has been used 16 times. 16 times! More on that later) type of gal, her appearance is just so plain... And yet, this handsome, fine specimen of a man has eyes only for her. And she is horny from the moment she seems him, of course, so it all works out. I am happy for them, but it was so on the nose.

There was this hilarious scene where the ghost pirate dumped her, in order to protect her, of course, because stupidity persevered, and he could not connect the dots and realize that he was her true Partner (there is this whole soulmate subplot here). Hence, he was like, man, I cannot provide for this woman, since I'm a ghost and incorporeal, I gotta step down for her real Partner to take care of her, so I'm gonna dump her right now. And he wills himself to become invisible. The chapter ends, and the next chapter basically starts with the heroine carrying on with the investigation nonetheless, and the hero makes his appearance AGAIN to talk her out of it, and eventually, they reunite. The breakup lasted three pages max, because when your true Partner comes, all there's left to do is come. (There is this another subplot with the heroine unable to climax, and then they have sex while the hero is still in his ghost form, and she finally reaches this sweet orgasm. Every time I have to clarify something in my review, I feel like I'm spiralling further into the madness, because at this point, it all just sounds so normal to me. Nothing can surprise me after that ending.)

The investigation was unnecessary: I could have told them the name of the real killer from the first introduction of the case. But no-one asked me, which is a grave mistake people keep repeating, and then regret it.

The book really sucked me in, I am not gonna lie and pretend I hated it. It was engaging. It was so fast-paced and easy to read, I had to physically stop myself from reading and carry on with life. But the writing? It was not the worst, but the book was so overwritten. I just felt like peaking into someone else's fantasy (and whose it might be?..), and it was not really edited that much. The most irritating thing was the repetition of certain words and phrases that I got sick and TIRED of by the end, here's this wall of shame:
Sunday school teacher

pizza-tramp

semi-frigid

I knew you were mine (and other variations of the phrase)

troll powder (don't even get me started on this one!!!)

He treated all the serving girls poorly and watered down his ale. (like, I got it the first time, I don't need a reminder every chapter!!)

wanker

The list is incomplete, but every time one of those things appeared in the text, I was physically suffering. Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?

But I finished the book! What was it for? Well, I was gripped, as I've said, and I really respect the author for letting her imagination fly. Besides, I had a chance to write this review, to clown around a bit for my – and hopefully yours – entertainment. Will this story hold a special place in my heart? No. But whatever, I had fun.

3 stars – thank you eva for deciding to annotate a book to take me on a ghost pirate x crime scene investigator adventure romance

This book is by no means groundbreaking, perfect literature, or emotionally impacting BUT is it a really fun time going along with a plotline that is so utterly unrealistic it is enjoyable? 100%

Don't go into this thinking it will be an unpredictable story (you can guess the killer from the start pretty much), but instead go into this with a blank, open mind.

Now our main characters – we have Grace (🥱) and then we have Jamie (🩷)

Grace I found to be extremely frustrating with her constant repetition that she is “normal” and rejection to her magical bloodline – babe you have centuries worth of potions and spells to learn that could seriously improve your life and solve your issues… what are we doing. Even when she does use them throughout the book, her reluctance was quite annoying.

And she is in utter disbelief that there is a ghost?? Did we not already establish that magic is real, is a ghost really out of the ordinary come on now.

Her character growth I found to be quite bland – she had heaps of progress throughout the story (I guess because she had to), but it didn’t really feel like it stuck at the end.

Jamie on the other hand, we love.

He is sort of just a silly ol’ pirate with his head in the clouds, doesn’t really know what he is doing, and is simply interested in pretty treasure and a lass now and again (until Grace of course). I loved him while reading, he had me kicking my feet and giggling, but am I going to remember him for a long time? Probably not.

I’m all for being possessive and claiming your girl, but Jamie was a bit much, I got a little bored with his possessiveness over her. It could be how frequently he said it, that I started to wait for him to develop and say more, but he was consistent till the end. Nevertheless, he was a bundle of sunshine, and I am happy he got to get his revenge on Robert irl.

Speaking of Robert – ew. I did not expect there to be such explicit mentions of grape in this story, but there definitely was, and Robert is a filthy man. I was hoping Jamie would actually kill him but I do see that this would cause many complications when trying to have a future with this man from the 1700’s that we stole and brought to the present.

For what it was, the story is fun and I am happy I read it – however the potential for this to have been a 5 star hurts me a little.

Hear me out – make this 500 pages, get an editor, experienced fantasy author, dual pov, and add heaps more character growth, fill in plotholes = 5 stars.

Regardless, although this story has the potential for being a high fantasy, it is simply not that in this form, which is fine. Its meant to be a light fluffy story that takes you for a fun adventure, and on that basis it delivers.

Thank you eva, I look forward to the next annotated book hehe.

p.s. I am going to turn a blind eye to the smut – iykyk

3/5 stars
edit: 3.5/5 stars I surprisingly think about this book a lot

- I really liked the premise of this book. I have never read a book with a ghost pirate love interest and a crime scene investigator main character with magical powers that featured time travel and a murder mystery. it was SO fun and honestly I think I liked the plot and characters way more than I liked the writing and the way things were delivered

- this book should have been written in dual pov. I don’t understand why it wasn’t and it genuinely bothered me the entire time. I can SEE in the authors writing the potential it had if it was written in first person literally why didn’t she do that i’m gonna cry.

if it was in first person I genuinely could’ve given it over a 4 stars. a lot of my criticisms/things I didn’t vibe with stemmed from the writing choices so I think a different perspective could’ve fixed that a ton.

- getting into the main character, grace is NOT likeable. she kept getting on my nerves. even at the end, we barely got any character development bc she refused to embrace her magic side like babe I thought we grew.

- also she grew up in a magical family and saw magic things all the time yet refused to believe the magical shit that was happening to her? first with the time travel then jamie’s ghost.. milked that for SO long acting like she was losing it? bro you literally KNOW magic exists, your family is the magic family. get outta here

- also she said she wants to be normal so many times i almost had an aneurysm. annoyed tf outta me

- nglll….. jamie was doing too much with the possessive thing

- I understand him hating on robert bc he is indeed a piece of shit rapist abuser who should rot in a cell but the WAY the author was writing his jealousy made me cringe a lot. I feel like jealousy and possessiveness can be such a hot thing but there is such a fine line before it goes into cringe territory and it’s just so easy to mess it up. I think this book was an example of that. I liked the effort, I just wasn’t into it as much as I know I could’ve been.

- grace calls jamie handsome and attractive too many times in different ways it’s making me roll my eyes. girl and to his face??? do you not know men and their egos. and he is a pirate why are you calling him handsome to his FACE HE WILL NOT LET YOU FORGET. also her obsession with his hands… like I get it but girl get UP.

- STOPPPPP BRINGING UP THE FACT THAT YOUVE LOVED HIM SINCE YOU WERE A KID. ‘you had me since I was fifteen’ THAT IS WEIRD GRACE WE DONT SAY THAT

- very repetitive. their dialogue felt repetitive, the issue regarding her normalcy felt repetitive, their internal monologues felt repetitive. certain words and phrases were just constant and it got a bit suffocating? idk if that’s the right word.

‘patriot blue’ - let’s find new ways to describe his eyes
‘sunday school teacher’ slander is crazy
‘husband material’ I just don’t like this
‘pizza-tramp’ used too many times
‘semi frigid’ used too many times

I understand some of these became inside jokes and I did appreciate that, I love it when we get in on inside jokes and they start being used randomly but I feel like these were milked and they started getting annoying. they referenced them too much.

- jamie gave me flynn rider x jack sparrow vibes

- I really liked him, aside from the oddly repetitive jealousy and phrases ‘jesus mary and joseph’, ‘wanker’, ‘donea’ (how do you even pronounce that), I really liked him and his banter. I DO wish his pirate-ness was shown a little more. I get he was possessive and territorial and sly (and a bit of a whore) but I do wish we saw more of the unpredictable side to him. I think I wanted the book to lean in a little more toward the pirate thing and make him more like a jack sparrow.

- ngl as much as I felt like it was reaching at first, I was able to believe in this ‘partner’ soulmates thing because of the way the author showed how they felt this buzz of energy around each other. I liked that that was highlighted or else the whole ‘grace was his’ would’ve put me even more off

- speaking of, again, the possessive ‘mine’ and ‘you BELONG to me’ thing could’ve been something i’d be on board with but I think the way it was written had me not liking it and feeling a bit taken aback

- I love the time travel aspect and that past jamie’s memories can go into ghost jamie’s memories and he can remember how it felt to touch her UGH so cute

- there were definitely really cute moments in this book. majority from jamie. I just don’t like grace she got on my nerves. she did have some funny moments though, i’ll give credit where it’s due.

- THE PET NAMES IN THIS BOOK WERE ACTUALLY GOOD. he calls her love. ‘my love’ 🥺 that was it for me.

- I also feel like robert was lowkey used as a plot device to get jamie and grace closer together and make jamie realise his possessive feelings towards grace. I didn’t feel like it was a natural arc, since the first time we heard of robert and saw him he was with the pizza girl. I honestly think it could’ve been more impactful if we saw him beforehand and THEN had him betray us.
similarly at the house when he broke in, he was used to amplify jamie’s hatred and make him realise he can’t protect grace. I just think robert was mainly used as a ploy to further the couples bond rather than have him be his own character. I wish he was written more grey so we could be conflicted with him?? idk, I feel like it was forced and I didn’t like it much.

overall, a decent read. I think it had a lot of potential, and I think if it was written by any other author it could’ve been an easy 4-5 stars. appreciated it for what it was though. ITS YAS’ TURN EEEEEE

This had every element needed to be a favorite guilty pleasure for me (pirates! ghosts! witches! time travel! murder!) but alas, it was rather painful to get through. Maybe if it were 200 pages shorter instead of written like the super dictionary.

PROS: Despite its length it never takes itself too seriously, so if you're in the mood for something silly you might enjoy this.

This was a really cute and fun paranormal romance that’s perfect for a spooky season read. Helena & Jamie - always and forever! 👻🧙‍♀️🎃

Probably one of the most unique romances I’ve ever read! This was equal parts fun, hilarious, intriguing, angsty, romantic, and sexy. Also Jamie is a walking green flag and I’m obsessed with him 😍🥰🤤😏
