and that's no lie
this book is my new favorite thing. and - wow - does my new favorite thing have a lot of negative reviews here on goodreads. the objections seem to be: 1) this is really dumb and 2) this is a one-joke book.
do i disagree? not at all. this is SO DUMB it should be wearing a helmet so it doesn't hurt itself. and yup, there's just one joke. but when that joke is, "sharks messily eat people on land - whaaaaaaaaat?" i'm telling you - that joke does not get old for me.
my expectations for graphic novels are fairly low - be pretty, make me laugh, entertain me.
was it pretty? well, no - the artwork is not spectacular, but
the gore is wonderful and wonderfully silly
did it make me laugh? oh, yes.
i may have peed myself.
fortunately, i have a bottom half.
did it entertain me? hell's bells, it did! there is a BEAR fighting a SHARK!
what more does anyone need to be entertained?
it is wildly implausible - biologically, medically, zoologically - although it is totally true that you should punch attacking sharks in their noses if you can. it helps if you are mighty
maybe i should myself be fitted for a helmet, but i loved this stupid book.
look at that shark push that bear off a boat!
and then ride off in search of more human victims
and tell me you aren't totally rooting for him.

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise… In a world where sharks live in the forest and terrorise tourists, two hicks called Carl and Jonbobby, along with Seabear (because bears live in the sea in this kerazy topsy-turvy world), will take it upon themselves to rid the world of the Grizzlyshark infestation of the National Parks!
Invincible artist Ryan Ottley’s Grizzlyshark is a one-joke comic that, like all one-joke comics, becomes repetitive and dull quite quickly. In the same tone of intentionally cheesy movies like Sharknado, Grizzlyshark is all about the wacky concept rather than anything else like story or characters.
The book is mostly imagery of sharks taking bites out of campers and that’s it. Really, it’s just one scene after another of people in the woods in one panel then being eaten in the next. Ho hum. The whole “hunting the Grizzlysharks” storyline is more of an afterthought.
The visuals are very graphic and violent which makes it a bit more interesting and Batman colourist Ivan Plascencia’s colours look fantastic. But despite being a short book at roughly 80 pages, it still seems overlong for what it is: a silly joke idea for a comic that was only sorta funny the first time. I feel like if Ottley wasn’t friends with Robert Kirkman Image would never have published this.

When you buy a book called "Grizzly Shark", you expect ridiculous and that's exactly what you get. It was however different than I expected. From the title I expected some kind of Sharktopus like monster. What we get is more like Forest Shark. These are sharks that swim through the trees. The entire book is a one note joke. A bunch of people introduced on one page and brutally eaten on the next. And our main characters such as they are mainly consist of inbred hillbillies. But hey, I wasn't expecting the Bronte sisters here, just some good bloody fun.

So my dear idiotic friend KoKo convinced everyone I dared him to read an erotica book we all know he picked up by himself so I, in turn, got dared to read this book by Bhavik

And we get a super-awesome fight between a grizzly bear and a grizzly shark! Need I say more to sell the book to you?
All in all, my inner gore-freak totally got satisfied. I think for my first book from the horror/gore genre, this one turned out pretty well. Oh, and if you think I was scared? Nope. Just super satisfied

I am a sucker for anything with a “Sharknado” vibe – and this comic looked right up my alley. It did not disappoint. Totally ridiculous, and very funny.
You knew right from the start what you were getting into:
WTF indeed. Loads of gore – mostly blood, but also red icecream:
Everyone knows that sharks can smell blood miles away – and this shark does not let a few trees, or air, get in the way of tracking down every tiny drop of spilt blood in the area. There are detached limbs flying everywhere – the artists must have had so much fun drawing this.
Like the fantastic “Sharknado”, don’t question the story, lack of reality, survival despite life-annihilating injuries – just settle back and enjoy.
Volume I was a definite 5 stars, Volume II “Grizzly Shark Returns” was a bit of a let-down, with poorer graphics and poorer story-line but Volume III “Grizzly Shark vs Seabear” regained the magic, and ended on a real high:

I don't want to spoil it. But I will say: if you like the cover, you will like what is inside.
I would like to thank whoever designed the cover, probably the author, for including the title, because, had I not known this book was called "Grizzlyshark," I might never have bought it, thereby rendering my entire existence pointless.
This--this is the kind of art that reminds us of the greatness that man can achieve.
I don't want to spoil it. But I will say: if you like the cover, you will like what is inside.

December 11, 2022Imagine how stupid this comic is, based on the title and the cover. Done? It is at least twice as stupid as you were thinking. In the opening scene, a father tosses his son a gun as the latter goes to pee – "Ya don't go wandering these woods without a gun. There are sharks in these woods!" And in the process, brains him, meaning blood – the first of many, many times that someone will get a minor injury which then draws the hungry wood-shark. Who is at once terrifying and oddly cute; Ryan Ottley is cutting loose here, his style still recognisable from his superhero work but with a daft, playful edge that reminded me a little of Rob Guillory. You can see why he hasn't altogether made the switch to writing like many of his peers, but dear heavens he's got the right register for this glorious nonsense. Inevitably, my only complaint is that the shark's nemesis, SeaBear, gets short-changed.

This comicbook is utterly mental. It's pure stupidity and I felt delightfully stupid for laughing at every panel in which sharks appear out of the woods and disembowel people. It's an escalation of absurdity, and it never ceases.
Don't expect a plot apart from "woods are dangerous because giant sharks hide in them and all it takes is a scratch on your thumb for them to smell your blood and come get you". I can imagine the author laughing himself stupid at every page he drew, and I wish I could enjoy my work as comic artist quite that much! Hopefully one day.
All I can say is just read it. It takes 5 minutes, and leaves you giggling for hours!

This is the stupiest thing I've ever read with my own eyes. Four Stars.
It's the sharknado of comics, the art's mediocre, there's blood and gore galore, rocks are smarter than all the characters, it's painfully obvious this is a first time writer as the dialog is atrocious...and yet... Four stars.
There is a very extensive 'how it was made' reveal at the end. Chicken scratch notes and thumbnails of the creative process is so great to see. My favorite note was when the bear vs shark throw down happens, there was a cut idea of them getting it on and making a bear-shark hybrid, otherwise christened... a Bark.

Sea Bear Vs. Grizzly Shark was an amusing one-shot comic. It was full of gore, and a very simple joke. What if they made a typical bear in the woods monster movie, but replaced the bear with a shark? And what if they made a sea-monster/shark story but replaced the shark with a bear. It's about a ten page interesting premise.
I won't say Nobody Asked For A 3 Issue GrizzlyShark series to flesh out the story because obviously, somebody did, and the publisher agreed. It wasn't me.
The joke just doesn't carry for the length of this volume. It goes from amusing to tiresome to awful pretty quickly. Ryan Ottley is a fantastic artist. And if you love the level of gore he brought to Invincible, but turned up a few notches, you'll love the art. But as a writer? It reads like when someone hugely stoned says something everyone finds funny. But then he keeps talking for about an hour after the joke has been beaten to death.
I don't recommend this for anything but the art, unless you're really, really, really stoned.

I didn’t catch Grizzly Shark when it first came out… So I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of slapstick gore, brutal shark chomping violence and uncompromising dumb-fun that would transport me to a world of utter ridiculous brilliance in a one-sitting read. The first volume of Grizzly Shark is bonkers and a helluva good time. Think Evil Dead meets Jaws and Ryan Ottley’s masterpiece in horror comedy will start to make sense… Sort of anyways.
I’ve been a fan of Ottley for quite some time now as I think his art in Robert Kirkman’s superhero saga Invincible is some of the best in the game… Maybe even the very best when all the dust settles and that series concludes in 2017. That story is in my opinion the greatest hero book I’ve ever read. So if you’ve ever picked it up, you know what kind of gore Ottley is capable of drawing and you know just how damn good he is at doing it. Grizzly Shark is Ryan Ottley unleashed – no-holds-barred. Limbs will be chomped, faces will be eaten, babies will be used as bait – this shit is insane. Don’t take it seriously and you’ll do just fine.
We literally have one page of set-up before the Grizzly Shark attacks and bites our main protagonist in half. He lives mind-you, after his father shoves him on the campfire to cauterise the wound. The two joke about him not having legs or a stomach, seconds after the devastating wound. You know straight-away what kind of silly shit you’re in for, so if you’re not into comedic mayhem where sharks that roam on land for some reason just makes sense in this world, then get the hell out. These aren’t your grandpa’s sharks you son-of-a-bitch.
I love the way Ottley draws the carnage too. You’ll have one panel of set-up where someone cuts themselves in the forest (sharks smell blood) and then a second panel below or beside it that shows the shark decimating them and tearing their body to bloody pieces. Kids aren’t off-limits either folks, so if you have an issue with that – you may run into problems. At one point our half-bodied protagonist and a giant shark-punching hillbilly rescue a baby who is now half-zombie after it was found feasting on it’s recently murdered parents in the woods. They hang it on a rope and use it to bait the sharks in an epic conclusion that will go down in history as one of the most wonderfully idiotic but brilliant endings I’ve read in years. That final punchline literally made me laugh out loud. I loved it.
Plus, you’ll get one of the best comic book battles of the year when the Grizzly Shark fights a Sea Bear. Yes – the bears live under water and so forth. That’s how this world works… There’s a moment where the shark actually scoops a pile of sand with it’s fin and proceeds to throw it in the face of the bear, blinding it momentarily. You can’t make this shit up – it’s a riot. Ryan Ottley is one of the hardest working artists in the comic industry today and his work on Grizzly Shark deserves to be read and appreciated for the pure insanity it contains in it’s action-packed and preposterous three chapters. There’s some superb behind-the-scenes art and layout as well included in the trade, so even if you bought the three issues, it’s worth grabbing the paperback. “When in doubt, Throw a baby!”

Ryan Ottley's Grizzly Shark is stupid fun.
Grizzly Shark doesn't take itself seriously, and there's no need for you to take it seriously, either.
It's the comic book version of the belly laughs you have when you're telling absurd jokes with your friends. You know what I'm talking about -- the kind of jokes that wouldn't make sense to anyone else. And, honestly, you're not sure why they're so funny to you, but they are.
I laughed out loud multiple times while reading Grizzly Shark.
Grizzly Shark works well because Ottley is in on the gag. The idea came from a conversation with Jason Howard at a comic con. Ottley remembers, "Howard and I were drunk on fatigue and coming up with stupid ideas after a long day [...] we hit on one idea about a bear and a shark getting mixed up. From there, we were hooked."
Somehow, Ottley and Howard were able to take their farcical idea born of exhaustion and turn it into a graphic novel where everyone is in on the joke.
Ottley's angular, gore-filled illustration style works well with his story. Fans of Ottley's work on Invincible know what they're in for, but fans of his Spider-Man work may be in for a surprise.
This trade also has several sketches by Ottley, a Grizzly Shark/Sea Bear origin by Robert Kirkman, and several pages of notes/plot outlines by Ottley. Sketch galleries are always fun, and the plot outlines are a joy to study.

Wie Pete betont, erkennt er Haibisse, wenn er sie sieht, aber offensichtlich hält sein Sohn die Vorstellung, dass ein Hai ihr Vieh frisst, für eine lächerliche Vorstellung.
Meinung:
Grizzlyshark bekommt sicher keine Preise für die Story, es besteht hauptsächlich aus Bildern von Haien, die Menschen fressen und das war es. Eigentlich handelt es sich dabei nur um eine Szene nach der anderen, in der Menschen in einem Wald im sitzen und im nächsten gefressen werden. Aber bei diesem trashigen B-Movie-Comic handelt es sich tatsächlich um einen unterhaltsamen Comic, ich weiß gar nicht, wann ich zuletzt bei einem Buch soviel lachen musste. Der Zeichenstil ist so albern und cartoonartig, er passt hervorragend, zu der bescheuerten Geschichte. Die Bilder sind sehr anschaulich und gewalttätig und die Farben von Ivan Plascencia sehen fantastisch aus. Von mir gibt es für dieses Trashige Splatterfest 10/10

Eigentlich handelt es sich dabei nur um eine Szene nach der anderen, in der Menschen in einem Wald im sitzen und im nächsten gefressen werden. Aber bei diesem trashigen B-Movie-Comic handelt es sich tatsächlich um einen unterhaltsamen Comic, ich weiß gar nicht, wann ich zuletzt bei einem Buch soviel lachen musste. Der Zeichenstil ist so albern und cartoonartig, er passt hervorragend, zu der bescheuerten Geschichte. Die Bilder sind sehr anschaulich und gewalttätig und die Farben von Ivan Plascencia sehen fantastisch aus. Von mir gibt es für dieses Trashige Splatterfest 10/10

Wenn man sich einen Comic mit dem Titel "Grizzlyshark" zulegt, erwartet man mit Sicherheit ein Füllhorn voller Albernheiten und genau das bekommt man auch. Und es war genau das, was ich erwartet hatte, denn das Titelbild gibt schon einen Vorgeschmack auf die innen liegende absurde Geschichte.
Wie der Titel schon andeutet, handelt es sich hier um einen Waldhai. Das sind Haie, die durch die Bäume „schwimmen“. Das ganze Buch ist ein einziger Witz. Auf der einen Seite wird ein Haufen Leute vorgestellt, nur um auf der nächsten Seite auf brutalste Weise aufgefressen zu werden, wobei mein Mitleid sich in Grenzen hielt, weil die Hauptcharaktere hauptsächlich aus proletenhaften Hinterwäldlern bestehen.
Die Zeichnungen sind irgendwie drollig, der Hai sieht in manchen Szenen eher niedlich aus und nicht wie eine blutrünstige Bestie.
Aber hey, ich habe hier nicht Friedrich Nietzsche erwartet, sondern einfach nur einen unterhaltsamen blutigen Spaß, der leider etwas kurz war und gerne noch ein paar mehr Seiten vertragen hätte.
So schnell man die Story gelesen hat, so schnell hat man sie auch wieder vergessen. Ein netter Appetithappen für zwischendurch ist dieser Comic allemal.

4.5 stars rounded up. This book is utterly, regrettably, unforgettably ridiculous. I laughed aloud. Several times. So much gore!! Dear lord, there are buckets of blood on every page! The artwork is raw with sloshy slasher slaughter. And their faces! But the idea is so ridiculous so of course the people should look it. Look it!! Ha ha ha ha.

In the topsy turvy world of Grizzlyshark, a group of sharks are hunting in a forest, attacking anytime they smell blood. Meanwhile there's a Sea Bear living in the water nearby, waiting for a final smackdown with the titular villain.
Obviously, this is a ridiculous comic. But it is so much fun! It's almost unbelievable how much insanity is packed into this short book. It might not be for all tastes, but I think lovers of movies like Sharktopus and Sharknado will be well pleased with this one.

This is intended for mature readers
Ok guys hear me out, this is one of those books where it's so bad it's good- I promise. This comic is filled to the brim with blood and gore, but also really terrible puns that are nothing but delightful. Definitely one of the more hilarious things I've read recently, give it a shot!
