About the author

A preoccupation with sexual violence characterizes novels, plays, and short stories that Donatien Alphonse François, comte de Sade but known as marquis de Sade, of France wrote. After this writer derives the word sadism, the deriving of sexual gratification from fantasies or acts that involve causing other persons to suffer physical or mental pain.

This aristocrat, revolutionary politician, and philosopher exhibited famous libertine lifestyle.

His works include dialogues and political tracts; in his lifetime, he published some works under his own name and denied authorship of apparently anonymous other works. His best erotic works combined philosophical discourse with pornography and depicted fantasies with an emphasis on criminality and blasphemy against the Catholic Church. Morality, religion or law restrained not his "extreme freedom." Various prisons and an insane asylum incarcerated the aristocrat for 32 years of his life: ten years in the Bastile, another year elsewhere in Paris, a month in Conciergerie, two years in a fortress, a year in Madelonnettes, three years in Bicêtre, a year in Sainte-Pélagie, and 13 years in the Charenton asylum. During the French revolution, people elected this criminal as delegate to the National Convention. He wrote many of his works in prison.

_Dialogue Between a Priest and a Dying Man_

I saw one of my goodreads friends marking it as to read and i was instantly drawn to it. It is a pretty small book and it deals with whether there is God or not. Wheter there is this "Greater Creator" or whether all of our actions are the result of "natural selection". I enjoyed it a lot. Give it a try for sure.

Un texto más filosófico que otra cosa.

Abstenerse de leer los creyentes que no quieran leer a un ateo dar sus razones para no creer.


Me gustan los diálogos, conversaciones o debates sobre religión, creer en dios, fe, etc.
Y este diálogo entre un sacerdote y un moribundo me ha encantado.

Decir que el moribundo le da un baño de realidad (le duela a quien le duela) al sacerdote. El sacerdote, honestamente, no ha sabido argumentar su postura.

Hay muchas cosas que me han gustado del razonamiento del moribundo, pero hay 2 especialmente en las que siempre he pensado y creído: no necesito a ningún dios para que me diga lo que está bien o lo que está mal, y si alguien lo necesita es que no atiende a razón. La otra es que si dios nos dio libre albedrío, ¿por qué luego castiga al que hace el mal (o peca)? ¿No hubiese sido todo más fácil si nos hubiese hecho buenos?


En pocas páginas el autor nos da muchos razonamientos por parte del ateo y pocos por parte del sacerdote; así que quizás no los trate de la misma forma, pero creo que así deja claro en donde se posiciona, o al menos es lo que parece.


Creo que se nota que no soy creyente, pero eso no quiere decir que no respete a los que lo son.
Simplemente la fe religiosa no es para mí.
Si estás leyendo esto y eres creyente, por favor, estos comentarios no son un ataque.

Por cierto, me parece un texto muy valiente y/o atrevido para la época (1782), aunque es verdad que no se debió de publicar hasta 1900 y pico.

Ένας εξαιρετικός, από φιλοσοφικής άποψης, διάλογος, ανάμεσα σε έναν θανατοποινίτη και έναν ιερωμένο. Βέβαια, η πληροφορία πως ο ένας από τους δύο συνομιλητές είναι βαρυποινίτης, που επρόκειτο να πεθάνει, δε φαίνεται να έχει άμεση, έως και καμία, επιρροή στις απόψεις και την έκβαση του διαλόγου, απλώς λειτουργεί σαν κίνητρο, σαν μια αφορμή να συναντηθούν αυτά τα δύο πολύ διαφορετικά, ως προς τον χαρακτήρα, τον τρόπο σκέψης και την ψυχοσύνθεσή τους, πρόσωπα.

Ένα από τα καλύτερα φιλοσοφικά δοκίμια, με βάση τους τον αθεϊσμό κ σε μορφή διαλόγου, που έχω διαβάσει. Πλούσιο σε υλικό για σκέψη.

Χάνει ένα ολόκληρο αστεράκι από το παρακάτω απόσπασμα:

Συγχωρώ όλα τα λάθη εκτός από εκείνα που μπορούν να αποβούν επικίνδυνα για την κυβέρνηση κάτω από την οποία ζούμε. Μονάχα οι βασιλείς και η μεγαλειότητά τους με εντυπωσιάζουν, μόνο εκείνους σέβομαι, και όποιος δεν αγαπά τη χώρα και τον βασιλιά του δεν είναι άξιος να ζει.

Και αυτό, γιατί σε τέτοια βιβλία παίζουν καθοριστικό ρόλο οι ιδέες που προβάλλονται. Δεν ξέρω αν είναι αντιπροσωπευτική του De Sade αυτή η άποψη, αλλά ήταν σαν τη μύγα μες στο γάλα ανάμεσα σε όλα τα άλλα.

Libro contundente, que va directo al grano a una conversación entre un moribundo ateo y un sacerdote que busca la confesión de sus pecados para poder ingresar al cielo a lo cual el moribundo evidentemente se rehúsa, dialogo sumamente corto que no se lee en más de media hora y eso es una pena, y valdría hacer la aclaración que este dialogo no es para todo el mundo, en especial para los creyentes ya que se les ataca sus creencias directamente.

Efectos naturales deben tener causas naturales sin que haya necesidad de atribuirles orígenes antinaturales, tal como sería tu dios, quien, insisto, debería ser explicado sin proporcionar a su vez explicación alguna. Άντε τώρα να αξιολογήσεις/ποσοτικοποιήσεις ένα φιλοσοφικό δοκίμιο με αστεράκια. Και πόσο μάλλον ένα σαν κι αυτό που δίνει τροφή για σκέψη (είτε συμφωνείς με αυτά που παρατίθενται είτε όχι). Μέσα ξεχώρισα κάποιες σκέψεις του De Sade, οι οποίες με "μπέρδεψαν"/βρήκαν -κάθετα-αντίθετη.
Για παράδειγμα, δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω πως ο θανατοποινίτης αντιδρά στη σκέψη και μόνο να τον ορίζει ένας θεός (όποιος κι αν είναι αυτός), αλλά σέβεται τους βασιλιάδες και δέχεται να τον ορίζουν, αντικαθιστώντας τη μια μορφή εξουσίας ("θεϊκή") με κάποια άλλη ("γήινη"). Εδώ νιώθω ότι ο De Sade αναιρεί αυτά που -πολύ ωραία- έλεγε στην αρχή.
Επίσης, σε κάποιο σημείο μεταφέρει την άποψη ότι τα εγκλήματα είναι στοιχείο απαραίτητο στη φύση, όπως και οι αρετές, για να υπάρχει μια ισορροπία και ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που έχουν κλίση στη διάπραξη εγκλημάτων. Δηλαδή, αν κατάλαβα καλά, η φύση γεννάει εγκληματίες για την ύπαρξη κάποιας ισορροπίας; Εδώ θα διαφωνήσω κάθετα μ' αυτή τη-μεταφυσικής απόχρωσης-άποψη, μιας και πιστεύω ότι κανείς δεν "γεννιέται" με κάποιο χαρακτηριστικό (πχ καλός/κακός, δίκαιος/άδικος), αλλά η προσωπικότητα μας - διαμορφώνεται με τις αρετές και τις ατέλειές της-απ' τις κοινωνικές συνθήκες που επικρατούν.
Πάντως, χαίρομαι που το διάβασα και μπήκα στη διαδικασία να σκεφτώ κάποια πράγματα.

استدلال‌هایی از جنس روشنگری در رد اعتقاد به خدا، علیه برهان‌هایی که مشهورند به نظم، معجزات و اراده‌ی آزاد. آنتاگونیستِ داستان، حسرت می‌خورد که بیش از این «فساد» نکرده است، زیرا آن را انجام وظیفه‌ای می‌داند که طبیعت با قرار دادن میل در درونش، بر عهده‌اش گذاشته است. معتقد است باید با خرد و فیزیک و مشاهده، چیزها را اثبات کرد و جز این توهم است.

A brief, comparatively tame, and arguably one of the earliest of Sexy Sadie’s writings—penned while the Marquis was locked away in the Bastille and suffering from obesity, bitterness, and gout—Dialogue entre un prêtre et un moribond (I just felt like having the French title stickered in this review for the heck of it…I think I’ll make a habit of that now…don’t you dare ask me to try and pronounce this in French) is a one-sided discussion of theology in which a pesky priest is taken to task for trying to convince a libertine to make a deathbed repentance. Beyond the obvious social no-no of championing atheism, DBaPaaDM doesn’t feature a single lick of debauchery besides the surprise ending in the stage directions of the two titular characters resolving their differences in an orgy with several young, lithe prostitutes…well, it's not that much of a surprise, really, if you know a single thing about SS’s writings.

Ο αγαπητός Μαρκήσιος De Sade αυτή την φορά κρατήθηκε σε πιο φιλοσοφικό τόνο.

Πρόκειται για ένα διάλογο ανάμεσα σε έναν αργόστροφο και καθαρά δογματ��κό καθολικό ιερέα και σε έναν καταδικασμένο σε θάνατο ακόλαστο κακοποιό ο οποίος αντικρούει τα επιχειρήματα με θαυμαστή λογική. Μαλλον μια αποτύπωση των σκέψεων του ίδιου για να λέμε την αλήθεια... ο ιερωμένος προσπαθεί να πείσει τον ετοιμοθάνατο να μετανοήσει και να δεχτεί μέσα του την έννοια της πίστης και του θεού. Ο ετοιμοθάνατος απο την άλλη, προσπαθεί να πείσει τον ιερέα ότι όλα αυτά περί θεού και Σοφίας τον αφήνουν αδιάφορο και πως οκά βασίζονται στην ιδέα της φύσης και της λογικής.

Ενδιαφέρον βιβλιο, σίγουρα ακούμε την ώριμη σκέψη του μαρκησίου αν και πρόκειται για ένα απο τα βιβλία της νεότητας του. Το βιβλιο μένει μακριά απο ακολασίες και όργια. Η τουλάχιστον στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του...

I've been accused of and "declared" an atheist multiple times over the course of my life. It has never been true. I was something a bit more particular; the term I guess would be a maltheist or misotheist, I believed in God...and hated him. How serendipitous that I'm now reading Camus' The Rebel which goes into just that mentality on a grander scale. But I digress.

I've never read the Marquis De Sade though, like many, I've heard the rumors. I really had no feelings for or against him because, frankly, I didn't know enough to declare anything. After reading this, more or less, somewhat narrativized treatise on De Sade's declared atheism, I have to say his reasoning for his beliefs (or lack thereof) is quite sound. It makes sense. And if I had read this many years ago I probably would have, undoubtedly with caustic bitterness, championed it as a brilliant continental's victorious salvo against the Abrahamic God. But I'm not that kind of man anymore, sorry.

I'm hardly religious, nor will I ever be. But due to a tumultuous last few years (and up to the writing of this review, still going strong with dysfunction and despair, the double d's that are always front and center!) I've taken to a nascent spirituality. I pray, every morning, to the God of the Jewish people. I don't do it in the orthodox fashion, and it's mostly in English, but I do pray. I pray for the psychological and emotional benefits. I can't say if it's helped me or could help you, but I can say that I'm glad to at least attempt a broadening of my spiritual horizons.

I still recommend this text, however. Wholeheartedly, in fact. I may lack the (ironic) faith to be an atheist, but I can respect and admire good argumentation and the perforating of ostensibly unimpeachable received wisdom. De Sade had a cutting and insightful mind and it's worth experiencing despite any and all personal biases. Now, pray for happiness.

Una experiencia interesante. Si bien Sade sigue recurriendo a la blasfemia, aquí deja a un lado el tema sexual y renuncia a sus carecterísticos sofismas mostrando un una obra meramente filosófica en la que se cuestiona la idea divina de Dios y no el hecho de si existe o no, refiriéndose a la naturaleza como la verdadera creadora de todo siendo la moral un resultado de la selección natural.

Πόσο πολύ απογοητεύτηκα με αυτό το βιβλιαράκι... Παρατηρούμε έναν κληρικό που θεωρεί την πίστη του μοναδικό ορθό δόγμα, να προσπαθεί να "συνετίσει", αν μπορούμε να το πούμε έτσι, έναν ετοιμοθάνατο άνδρα ο οποίος τυγχάνει άθεος. Ε λοιπόν ο τύπος που πεθαίνει είναι λίγο χειρότερος από αυτούς που στήνουν τα τραπεζάκια για τα κόμματα στη σχολή και σου επιχειρηματολογούν χωρίς επιχειρήματα! Θεοποιεί την ηγεσία και επιλέγει να υποδουλώνει την πλάση σε ένα ηγέτη, νομίζοντας πως η υποδούλωση αυτή τον κάνει πολύ διαφορετικό από κάποιον που υποτάσσεται σε μια δύναμη διαφορετική από αυτήν την οποία ο ίδιος αποδέχεται! Ο λόγος όμως που δυσανασχέτησα διαβάζοντας αυτόν τον διάλογο, δεν ήταν η αδιαλλαξία και η ακλόνητη πίστη των δύο ανδρών, αλλά ο τρόπος με τον οποίο ο ετοιμοθάνατος αποκαλούσε τους πιστούς ανόητους και βλάκες με προκλητικό τρόπο... Η πίστη ή η μη πίστη του καθενός του επιτρέπει να κρίνει, αλλά όχι να προσβάλλει τα πιστεύω άλλων... Πώς μπορώ να βάλω λιγότερα από ένα αστέρια; 3:)

Tan refinado como furibundo es el arte del insulto en Sade. El Fantomes agregado como apéndice, que suena más a proemio, quizás sea el mejor Sade conceptual. Despojado de la fruición de la ficción típica sadiana, el filo de Fantomes suena a palabra pura, ascetismo ateo más explícito que el habitual porno del marqués. Si se pudiera ponerle música, debería sonar como Bach, como un anti-Bach bien temperado. Para tratar de entender de qué se trata la modernidad. El diálogo vuela más bajo, el sacerdote suena débil, mientras el moribundo suena fuerte y lúcido. Un poco caricaturesco. Edición bilingüe, editora AC, prólogo de Maurice Heine.

Uno de los primeros textos de Sade, este breve diálogo centrado en el duelo discursivo entre un libertino moribundo que se arrepiente de no haber cedido aún más a los placeres del mundo, y un sacerdote que intenta censurar su actuar, es un interesante preámbulo a los trabajos más completos del Marqués.

A pesar de su racionalización a veces adolescente el texto merece la pena leerse.

This is my favourite of the works of the Marquis de Sade. He actually lays out a cohesive and intelligent philosophy that would have been remarkable, albeit highly blasphemous, in its in own time. He avoids the sophistries that he uses to make uncoherent arguments in his other works such as Philosophy in the Bedroom and the result is a work concerned with Theology rather than overt sexuality. (Although he manages to sneak his bit in at the end.)

In my opinion Dialogue between a Priest and a Dying Man is the best display of his intellectual brilliance and inspired religious thought but with its signignificant and noticeable lack of libertinage it's also not the best demostration of the quintessence of the Marquis de Sade. Principally, the Marquis employs the brutually sexuality for shock value but without it this work is much more integral and one can take his views more seriously.

Corto y conciso. Racional: habla sobre el libre albeldrío, que sería nulo si Dios castigara, porque solo habría una única opción posible realmente.
Habla de la eternidad: no morimos cuando morimos, sino que nos convertimos en otra cosa.
Habría sido interesante si el cura fuese un poco más elocuente y sabio, como para que el diálogo no hubiera sido tan desequilibrado.
Aún así, un texto cínico, del que hay mucho que aprender: cuando cometemos errores, fueron nuestras cualidades internas las que nos hicieron cometerlos. ¿Solo hay pasiones malas? Y, cuando parece que todo está perdido, el mendigo dice, básicamente, lo que dicen los profetas: trata a los demás con el respeto y la compasión con la que te tratas a ti mismo. No hagas a otro lo que no quieres que te hagan a ti.
Un texto ateo, pero espiritual, mira pues.

Θα έβαζα καλύτερη βαθμολογία, αλλά πιστεύω ότι δε προσφέρει κάτι παραπάνω στην ήδη υπάρχουσα γνώση, παρά μόνο μερικούς απλούς λογικούς συλλογισμούς, τους οποίους, έτσι κι αλλιώς, τους έχω κάνει επανειλημμένες φορές στην καθημερινότητά μου.

El ateo es el hombre de la naturaleza.


Esta corta conversación resulta ser un tratado filosófico sobre las pasiones, la razón y la naturaleza. ¿Quién, entre el moribundo o el confesor, termina siendo verdad?
 ¿Quién de ellos dos necesita de consuelo?
El moribundo no necesita de fabulaciones para morir tranquilo, para dejar de existir. Sabe morir y, además lo sabe hacer sin que le duela la inexistencia de la vida eterna.

Very short, which makes it very punchy too. Sade (whom I otherwise dislike) surely shows himself here to be scornful and arrogant, brushing away the common arguments given to support the existence of a God and in favour of religion with a scathing tone. Yet it contains, nevertheless, a few points believers themselves might agree with and take onboard... It's quick to read (barely twenty pages or so) but still relevant.
