Great mood (love the cover). In a really unexpected way, it's sort of Secret Garden meets Dracula. It doesn't fit neatly into a single category. There are elements of the supernatural, horror, even coming of age. The book starts with a young woman who is orphaned and is shipped off to live with her emotionally distant and broken uncle. We've all read this story before, right? But no, just when you start settling down into the story, it goes in a completely different direction that leaves you wondering where the story could possibly go next (you'll know which part I mean when you read it). I loved the fact that I couldn't predict the plot. It kept me turning the pages, because it didn't follow any formula, but still came together at the end in a very satisfying way.

The characters felt like real people, and acted in the way that made sense (a big pet peeve of mine is when characters do something completely out of character because the plot told them to). I loved the interactions between both the main players and the supporting cast, and how both the characters and the relationships developed throughout the story.

And there are delightfully creepy moments that hark back to how I felt reading Dracula when I was a young teenager. Great setting, and great mood throughout the book. It's a good crossover book that will be enjoyed by young adult and adult audiences. This review is equal parts me and my spouse. We both really enjoyed this book.

I’m sure you know how rare it is to find a novel that is so well written that the characters are real people to you and you are right there with them inside their heads. But this author is that good. Everything is real. As you read, you are living in that world, and watching things unfold as they really happen.

And here’s another rare thing - I truly liked ALL of the characters. I really was invested in them. They were complex and vulnerable, and they had to work hard to make sense of their lives. I was cheering for them the whole way. I enjoyed watching each character reach beyond themselves and really grow. It was especially encouraging to take the journey with the woman who had the courage to grow into her own power. (You will be amazed! I won’t give you any spoilers, but it really is amazing.)

The plot was so unexpected and intriguing, I never knew what was going to happen - but surprising leaps occurred continually and kept me riveted to the story. It flows along effortlessly, and comes to a very fulfilling and satisfying conclusion. That’s what I like in a really good book.
