Daniel helps his little sister overcome her fear of the fireflies, which she has never seen, by holding her hand and showing no fear himself. She holds his hand as does his dad as the fireworks start, and they are louder than Daniel thought that they would be. This is a sweet story about encountering new things and helping others experience new things that might be frightening. Reading this aloud, I avoided the ending catchphrase, which is unfamiliar to me, and any singing. I really don't remember much of Mister Roger's Neighborhood anymore, and I have never seen Daniel's Tiger's Neighborhood.
Have I mentioned lately that L is obsessed with Daniel Tiger books right now? This is one of four that she checked out from the library recently. She enjoyed having this read to her and reminiscing about watching her first fireworks show last month. I have to admit these books are growing on me. I'd still rather not read TV tie-in books when there are so many great, original children's picture books to read. But if she's going to get obsessed with a TV show book, I'm glad it's sweet, gentle, smart Daniel Tiger and not something else.
Fireworks, and other new things, can be scary. Scaredy cat Daniel, from the Land-of-Makebelieve, goes on a picnic with his family to watch fireworks. Daniel and his little sister learn to hold hands when scared.
A nice message with a story containing several different scenes, a solid developing narrative.
Daniel teaches his sister about fireflies and holds her hand when she's scared. She returns the favor when he hears how loud fireworks are and is a little scared too.
