Three young Amish women, each gifted with a hand-carved hope chest, find that one by one, with patience and faith, their most blessed dreams for the future can come true…
Annie Mast and Levi Miller were best friends until his father was shunned by the church. Now, ten years later, Levi has returned to Arthur, Illinois, for a brief visit, and he and Annie discover their bond is as strong as ever. Spending as much time together as possible, Annie finds herself dreaming of a future with Levi. And Levi is soon dreaming of building a home on a beautiful local hillside—to live in with Annie. Yet their longings are unlikely to become reality…
Levi is part of the English world, and while Annie cannot see herself there, she knows she must reveal her heart’s truth to him. And Levi, strongly reminded of his Amish roots, knows he must heal the bitterness of the past. And together, with love on their side, they just may find their way to an answered prayer…
Lisa Jones Baker grew up near a small Amish town in Illinois that she frequented with her family on weekends. She's also a dog lover and a fan of Scottsdale, Arizona, where she spent nearly two decades. Lisa graduated from Illinois State University with a French major, has been on 5 out of 7 continents, and considers her parents the best in the world. Raised in a Christian home, Lisa has always been blessed with love and support.
Lisa Jones Baker is a new to me author. I love trying new to me authors because you never know when you'll find a real winner. I sure found one here! I absolutely loved this book. Annie and Levi were inseparable as children but when his father got shunned in the Amish church they left the community. 10 years later Levi, returns for a wedding and Annie. is surprised the connection they still have as their relationship eases back into their old friendship. Soon each is dreaming of a life with the other in it and these dreams include marriage and children. In Levi's 10 year absence he became an Englisher and she is still an Amish girl. God's will and second chances make for a compassionate story you will treasure and want to read more than once. I highly recommend this book to lovers of Amish fiction. Publication date February 28,2017. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
Annie's Recipe book two from the Hope Chest of Dreams series. I enjoyed the first story in the series but enjoyed this one so much more. Looking forward to reading the third book, Rachel's Dream when it releases. Five stars
I have a new author and I for sure love her writing style. I like this book because it brings fantasy to a crashing halt forcing reality to come back into focus. I enjoy reading Amish novels especially if they have certain life messages like this one does. In this book Annie talks to Levi about how you cant just take the good and not the bad. Life isnt fair but then it wasn't meant to be. Annie also points out how we are meant to be at a certain place in a certain time. I like Annie. She's very wise andis a person who wants everyone to be happy including Levi. I like her too because she kind and compassionate about ppl and animals. She's also a smart cookie!! Levi is a pretty mixed up guy. He knows what he wants but is unsure in how to go after it. Levi is a great person to have around!!! It's a I've got ur back if u have mine kind of thing. I think along with God's help and Annie's, Levi does eventually figure things out. I strongly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy from the author and in no way required to review this
First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, ANNIE'S RECIPE is a sweet romance about two friends (best friends) who reconnected after ten years apart. Now, seeing each other at a wedding, the two friends reconnect and spend time together, rehashing the past and falling back into the same easy friendship they had as children.
There isn't any sexual tension between the characters, so readers and fans who like things chaste and sweet would love that aspect.
This is the second book in the Hope Chest of Dreams series. The first was Rebecca's Bouquet. I haven't read that book, but I wasn't lost at all in this book.
There is little to no faith message, so readers who object to strong gospel messages won't be offended, bothered or feel preached at.
I loved that Levi was a volunteer firefighter and was able to save a sweet little boy from a fire in the community. I also loved Annie's sweet and caring spirit toward an elderly widower in the community.
If you like sweet romances and Amish fiction about two friends finding love then ANNIE'S RECIPE is a book to consider. Annie's recipe is included at the end of the book.
1 cup cake flour 6 medium eggs, separated 1 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp lemon extract 1/4 cup cold water 1 tsp cream of tartar
(frosting optional)
Set oven to 325 degrees ten minutes before baking. Use an UNGREASED 10" tube pan. Sift flour, measure, resift 3 times. Put egg whites into a mixing bowl. Put yolks into a separate bowl. Gradually beat in half of the sugar (1/2 cup) with a rotary beater until so thick beater is difficult to turn, at least 5 minutes. With a wooden spoon, beat in flavorings. Now add flour and water alternately in 3 or 4 portions, beating vigorously after each. Now sift cream of tartar over whites and beat with clean rotary beater until stiff enough to form soft, shiny peaks, then add rest of sugar gradually and beat until shiny meringue forms pointed peaks that curve at the tips. Use a rubber scraper to quickly fold yolks mixture into the whites lightly but thoroughly. Now flow batter into pan. Bake cake on bottom rack 1 hour or until it springs back when touched lightly with finger. Remove from oven; invert at once over large funnel or bottle if pan does not stand on tube or side supports. When cool, remove from pan like Angel Food. Frosting is optional
Lisa Jones Baker has written an intriguing tale of an Amish girl and an Amish guy who have loved each other since they were children. The girl, Annie, has become very accomplished at making sponge cakes, but the guy, Levi, has moved away from the Amish settlement in Illinois because his father was shunned for driving a truck for his business. A wedding brought the two back together, and their love is no less than it was years ago. The differences in their beliefs appear insurmountable, yet, they continue to pursue the relationship--seemingly with no effort of their own. Annie knows that she wants to be Amish, but she wants Levi, and she wants to do the right thing. However, the right thing can be obscured in man-made rules and regulations.
Annie's Recipe is a book that is not to be missed by Amish fiction lovers. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a well-prepared sponge cake for your cup of tea.
My thanks to Zebra Books for allowing me to read and review this book.
Hope chests are so special. I never had the pleasure of owning own myself, except for a very small cedar one that a local furniture shop gifted to every senior girl upon our high school graduation. I treasured that little chest and kept special things in it...the hand-tatted handkerchief that my grandmother made, love letters from my husband from our dating days, etc. Sam makes hand-carved ones with special meaning for each recipient. Annie and her sisters have made it their mission to minister to Sam after the death of his wife, and he has a unique bond with them. He gives wise counsel to Annie as she renews a friendship with Levi from her school days in the Amish schoolhouse . They were inseparable in their younger years and they find that the desire to spend time together is just as great if not even greater. But he is now English and mamm and the Amish community disapprove of their relationship as they fear she will leave the Amish faith and become English. Will their love for each other be realized? He doesn't want to leave the English world and she doesn't want to leave the Amish. Can God help them find a way to be together? I loved reading this story and discovering new things about Annie and her sisters. They share a special bond and this resonates with me as I feel the same way about my sister and four brothers. Family is important to me, just as it is for Annie, Levi, and the Amish in general. My faith in God drives my decisions and that is certainly true for the Amish. Levi was once Amish himself so this is still vital to his life as well. Lisa Jones Baker incorporates faith beautifully into the words of her writing. This book would be appropriate for teenage readers as well as adults. I am pleased to say this book deserves a rating of 5 stars. I received a gift copy of this book from netgalley and Kensington Publishing Corporation.
Annie’s Recipe is the second book I have read by Lisa Jones Baker and hopefully not the last. This book was a delight to read a break from my normal read of the hot steamy sex. When I think of an Amish female I imagine a quiet, tranquil female, but Annie is none of that she is a very strong female who is not afraid to speak her mind and does she.
I loved watching Annie and Levi rekindle their friendship after Levi being gone from the Amish community for ten years due to his father’s shunning from the church and watching that friendship blossoming to more. As in any faith, the Amish have their struggles with their faith. Annie had struggled for ten years about the shunning of Levi’s father, with God being forgiving why wasn’t her Amish community.
Lisa Jones Baker has once again brought an amazing book about struggling with one’s beliefs and restoring one’s belief that if it is in God’s plan it will happen. I have always been in a community that has had Amish, Old Order Amish, and have always known a little about their faith; I still enjoy reading about the Amish faith But still astounds me that Amish are the most forgiving people but shun someone in their church who does not abide by the Ordnung. If you are looking for a sweet clean romance I recommend you pick up a copy of one of Lisa Jones Baker’s book, this reader has read the last two book in the Hope Chest of Dreams hopefully one day I can read the first Rebecca and Williams story!
I received a free copy from the author for my honest review!

Annie's Recipe is the second book written by Lisa Jones Baker in her Hope Chest of Dreams series. The storyline is exceptional, full of love, friendship, faith and second chances. I enjoyed this story because it was a definite page turner which really kept my interest.
The characters are amazing have great qualities. Even though the story revolves around Annie and Levi, I very much enjoyed the character of Old Sam. He reminds me of my grandpa. He offers grwat advice and has a wonderful ability to make hope chest with an engraving on the lid to capture the person he is making it for. Annie's hope chest has a recipe for Sponge Cakes which she makes for Old Sam now that his wife has passed. Levi and Annie have been friends since they started school, practically inseparable. Because of a devastating shunning they were torn apart and haven't seen each other for over a decade. Will their friendship pick back up or will the shunning cause a rift? This is such an amazing story.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others. I look forward to more amazing stories from this author in the future.
Congratulations to Lisa Jones Baker for delivering another amazing story for her readers to enjoy.
This book is about Annie and Levi’s relationship that is recently rediscovered and the challenges that they face to try to make it work.
This book is about love, romance, hope, faith, friendship, overcoming obstacles, and second chances.
The storyline flows, is evenly paced, and keeps you fully engaged!
The characters are well developed, genuine, and enjoyable!
It is clear Lisa Jones Baker knows the Amish community and their customs! The Amish background is well detailed, and thoroughly represented and captured throughout the book.
This book is book two in the Hope Chest of Dreams book series. This book can be read on its own. This book briefly touches on the previous book which easily catches you up on the background story.
I had not read the first book, although I wish I had and still might go back to read it anyways.
This book series features three books, and I look forward to reading the third and seeing how the series wraps up.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in sweet, clean romance books! You won’t be disappointed!

Annie's Recipe is a sweet story that will tug at your heartstrings. Annie and Levi were the best of friends as children, but that ended abruptly when his father was shunned and the family moved away. When Levi returns to Arthur, Illinois for a wedding they reconnect and it opens up new possibilities for both of them.
What caught me off guard a bit with this story was how much focus was placed on simply these two characters. So much of the Amish fiction I read gives you an entire community feeling. Annie's Recipe was really about Annie and Levi and to some degree their families. I wasn't quite sure how I felt about that at first because it was decidedly different from what I am used to. By the time I came to the end, however, I was grateful for it. This style truly allowed me to fully understand these characters and how they developed thought this touching story.
While I didn't read the first book in this series, I didn't miss anything as Annie's Recipe is a stand alone novel. I would, however, love to read Rebecca's Bouquet and Rachel's Dream because these three women are sisters and it would be interesting to learn all their stories. I'll definitely be on the look for more of Baker's work in the future.
If you enjoy Amish fiction, you need to add Lisa Jones Baker to your "to be read" list.
ANNIE'S RECIPE (HOPE CHEST OF DREAMS #2) LISA JONES BAKER
Annie's Recipe is the second book in Lisa Jones Baker's Hope Chest of Dreams series. Her first book in the series is Rebecca's Bouquet.
Annie's Recipe is a book where friendship, love and faith is the mixture that makes up recipe. Annie Mast and Levi Miller were best friends until Levi's father was shunned by the Amish community and the family moved away. That was ten years ago when the shunning happened to the Miller family. Levi returns to Arthur Illinois, after being away for ten years, to attend a wedding and both he discovers that he and Annie still share the same bond they once had ten years ago. In fact, this bond between the two is stronger than ever. Levi and Annie start dreaming of a future together, Levi building his dream house and Annie being a wife and mother. Since Levi is now part of the English world and Annie is Amish the two are wondering how they will get together. Annie realizes that she must reveal how she feels in her heart and Levi must put the hurt and bitterness from the past aside. With love on their side the two can make it. I enjoyed reading Annie's Recipe. In the back of the book, there is a recipe for Delicious Sponge Cakes.
Annie’s Recipe (Hope Chest of Dreams -Book 2 ) By Lisa Jones Baker Annie’s Recipe is book two in Hope Chest of Dreams series. I absolutely love this series. This was my second book to read by Lisa Jones Baker and hopefully I will be reading more. Looking forward to reading book three in this series. The story and the characters both are so real that I felt like I was right there with them. The author grabbed me right at the start and I was hooked.I loved the two main characters ,Annie and Levi . They grew up together and was really close till something happened. Sam was a really good friend to Annie. Annie was a strong woman and I loved that she kept the faith. I think I kept tears in my eyes while reading this wonderful love story. Is there any hope for Annie and Levi? I was happy to meet back up with Rebecca from Rebecca’s Bouquet. If you love reading good Amish books then you will love this series. I was given a complimentary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.
I have been anxiously waiting to sit down and write this review. Annie's Recipe is the second book I have read by Lisa Jones Baker and I know it won't be my last. First, I love the character depth that the reader gets to view as they get front row seats to Annie and Levi. While they were the best of childhood friends and then something happens, which I won't ruin, the reader is invited on a journey. One of the unique aspects of this book, is how strong willed and how much faith Annie has despite circumstances. I love that about her. I also am super fond of Sam and the gift that God has given him to create. The pages were fast for me on this one and I couldn't put it down once I had it in my hands. This book reads as a stand alone, but I loved hearing about Rebecca from the first book in the Hope Chest of Dreams. If you love a great Amish book that is faith based and a great read, pick up book by Ms. Baker, you'll love her books! I was given a complimentary copy of this book of this book, but a favorable review was not required. I give this book 5/5 stars.
This was my first book by Lisa, but will definitely not be my last. The characters are so life like that you feel like you are part of the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
Levi Miller grew up Amish but because his father broke one of the rules..... his life was forever changed. He was forced to leave his best friend, Annie Mast, behind. His father refused to apologize and the community refused to forgive him. Forgiveness is a hard concept, but we must forgive those who have hurt us if we want God to forgive us.
Annie was heart broken when Levi left. She couldn't accept that she would never see him again. A wedding in the community brought him back. The more time they spent together..... the more their love grew. In order for them to be together, one of them has to make a major sacrifice. Would you make a life changing sacrifice for someone you loved?
To see if the community considers forgiving Levi's dad, and if Levi & Annie find a way to be together, you have to read the book. Happy Reading!!
*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the sweet romance of Annie and her long lost friend Levi in Annie's Recipe. I was so glad they got the chance to meet again. So many unanswered questions needed to be resolved. I could understand the worry that would cause with the family and the close knit community though. Annie is loved in the community and she cares deeply for family and friends. I loved following along with her story.
There were great descriptions on the way of life and the countryside. I actually loved the lot the lot they reunited on and wanted to buy it myself!
While reading this book I was reminded of the power of forgiveness, to help thy neighbor, and to take care of one another. I loved that.
As a added bonus at the back of the book there was Annie's Recipe and I can't wait to give it a try.
A great read!
I was gifted this book by the author. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Author Lisa Jones Baker allows us into the world of the Amish community with her understanding of their customs. I think the only thing she could have done “better” was to use some of the Pennsylvania Dutch language to make it more plausible. That said, it is a great book that moves quickly and holds your interest.
I really had trouble putting this down. I couldn’t figure out what would happen. Would Levi return to the Amish life? Would Annie, because of her deep love for Levi, become English? If you enjoy Amish fiction you’ll want to read this and find out!
I loved reading about Old Sam and the beautiful hope chests he makes. He’s such a great reminder to slow down and take the time to make something beautiful and timeless.
Book 2 in the Hope Chest of Dreams series, this book can be read as a standalone with no problems. I’m looking forward to reading book 3!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
I really liked this Amish book. It is the story of Annie and Levi. They were school age friends who enjoyed each others company. They loved going to Pebble Creek. Levi's father got shunned and they left in a hurry and they never got to say goodbye. Ten years later Levi attends a wedding and they meet. It is a story of two different worlds. One Amish and and one English. They fall in love but there cultures hold them back because they do not want to leave there world and what they were raised in. Read for a honest review for net galley
Recipe for romance! Lisa Jones Baker has truly written a very delightful story. Annie is very true to her Amish faith, Levi is torn because of his family's past experiences. Suddenly a life changing event happens and brings many feelings and heartfelt truths to the surface. Will Levi and Annie be able to weather the differences between their families and find their love for one another. It is as uncertain as tossing a Pebble in a Creek. Lisa, thank you for the opportunity to read and offer a honest review of this truly delightful recipe for love and Faith.
Annie’s Recipe by Lisa Jones Baker is the second book in the Hope Chest of Dreams series. Annie Mast and Levi Miller were childhood best friends. Then one day Levi was gone. Levi’s father, John, had broken the rules of the Ordnung and was shunned. John quickly packed up his family and moved away. Ten years later, Annie is at the wedding of Katie and Jeremiah when she notices an Englischer in the crowd. Upon closer inspection, she notices that it is Levi. They agree to meet at their special place at Pebble Creek. When they meet, it is like they have never been apart. Over the next few days, the two meet whenever Annie can get away. Levi wants to spend the rest of his life with Annie, but, there is a big obstacle in the way of their happiness. Levi does not feel he can return to Arthur, Illinois and live. He feels he will always be known as the son of the shunned man. Levi knows that Annie would not be happy in the Englisch world and asks if she would be willing to compromise. Annie’s heart, though, is in the Amish world where she grew up. Annie believes that God can work miracles and, if she is meant to be with Levi, God will find a way.
Annie’s Recipe is nicely written and is easy to read. The book reminds me of a sappy romance novel with Christian faith and theology tossed in. Annie’s journal entries remind me of those written by a lovesick teenager. Annie’s sponge cakes are mentioned frequently throughout the book.
I received an advanced reader's copy from Kensington Books and Zebra via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Before Annie's Recipe, I had never read an Amish story, but I found it very interesting learning about the Amish traditions. Annie and Levi are endearing and realistic characters with honest emotions, and I fell right into their world. The young couple were best friends, falling in love, when they were separated. Now, ten years later, they have come back into each others lives. I especially like how they shared their emotions with each other and with God. I definitely recommend Annie's Recipe to all readers of Christian romance, even if you've never tried an Amish story before. The author gave me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say I really enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading Lisa Jones Baker's other books.
Annie looked at her childhood best friend Levi. They were at an Amish wedding which tended to be long. It had been ten years since Levi and Annie had seen each other. Levi would only be around a couple days as his father needed his help. Levi’s father had been shunned and they had left and no longer lived among the Amish. and that is why Levi and Annie hasn’t seen each other for ten years. Levi had come back because it was his cousin’s wedding. Levi and Annie spent the next day together and afters he was back home she wished Levi didn't have to leave at all. Annie had never replaced Levi in her life. Annie taught now and helped with chores at home. Annie also knew the path in life she was expected to take she envied Levi had a lot of choices he can take not so for Annie. When Levi and Annie were young they talked of going to the Six Flags amusement park. They were older now flags swayed from their poles. While at the amusement park Levi had told Annie she was his favorite person. Then Annie realized the one man she wanted to spend her life with -Levi- was the one man couldn’t have. Levi told Annie he loved her but he could not join the Amish church after what they had done to his family. Annie told Levi goodbye. I loved this story always do love a good Amish story. The plot was great and The writing was also. I loved the way Annie and Levi just fell back into how they had always been with each other. But they different religion was a big block for them. I didn't like how Annie's’ mom didn’t act like she really trusted Annie when she was with Levi. I knew that she was worried for Annie But also if gossip got around what it would do to the rest of the family. I hated to see Annie go through the hurt she did but I was glad when she found someone to talk to and who understood what she was going through. This was a good read it kept my interest all the way through the story. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend.
Annie and Levi were friends as children and now are able to reconnect as adults. Enjoyed their story as they work toward resolving the Amish and English world differences to find their pathway together. Good second book in the Hope Chest series. Looking forward to the next book.
Ebook from Netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Grab some tissues for Annie's Recipe. Annie and Levi had been childhood friends until Levi's father was shunned and left their Amish community. Annie and Levi prayed for one another but hadn't seen each other until Levi returned 10 years later for his cousin's wedding. Their past friendship had never died and the attraction was there, but Annie was Amish and Levi living in the English world. The characters are well developed with issues that caused many questions and conversations with others and one another. Unexpected events added further action and compassion among some. Readers will enjoy this book which can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading Rebecca's Bouquet first in the Hope Chest of Dreams series. I look forward to reading the next installment, Rachel's Dream.
I enjoy finding new authors to read and was happy to come across Annie's Recipe by Lisa Jones Baker. In a genre that can sometimes be a bit repetitive in its storylines, Lisa has written a fresh story about friendship, love, and loyalty.
Annie and Levi were inseparable as friends growing up. That is until Levi's father was shunned and the family moved away. Levi has returned for his cousin's wedding and runs into Annie. The two agree to meet and catch up on each other's lives. With the soft sounds of Pebble Creek gurgling in the background, these two recapture a friendship that never died. The friendship between the two seemed very genuine and believable to me. It was absolutely no stretch of the imagination to picture these two childhood friends sitting by the creek and enjoying the company of each other and catching up on old times. Everything about these two and their relationship with each other seemed very natural and pleasant to read. It was easy to picture their friendship leading into something stronger.
Annie struggles with her feelings for Levi since his family was shunned and she is a member of the Amish community even though she hasn't joined the church. Her inner struggle with her loyalty to her upbringing and the church combined with her feelings for Levi were easy to understand. I thought the author did a great job of writing about Annie's struggles and also Levi's as he is conflicted with his feelings for Annie and his family's past with the church.
I like the author's writing style as she kept the story flowing easily from chapter to chapter. This book was very easy to read and stay interested in. Her descriptions really made the book come alive and made me feel as if I were there right along with the characters.
This book has a bit of a YA feel to it. The two main characters are young adults and I think the book would be very relatable to this group of readers. This book is a very clean read and would be good for teenagers, too. With all of that said though this book can be thoroughly enjoyed by us who aren't in those two categories. I love that this is just a clean, sweet romance that can appeal to readers of all ages.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and was not required to write a review. All opinions are mine.
