A special-needs guide that ?comes to the rescue?( Carol Stock Kranowitz, author of The Out-of-Sync Child ) of those who struggle with an increasingly common condition.
Millions of children suffer from Nonverbal Learning Disorder, a neurological deficit that prevents them from understanding nonverbal cues like tone of voice and facial expressions. Though they can be exceptionally bright and articulate, these children often have difficulty in social situations, and can become depressed, withdrawn, or anxious.
In this revised edition, Rondalyn Varney Whitney--a pediatric occupational therapist and the parent of a child with NLD--offers practical solutions, the latest information, and all-new activities that will help parents put their child on the path to a happy, fulfilling life.
This is a helpful resource for those parents who are just learning that their child has NLD or Asperger’s Syndrome. Walks through a lot of the basics or what symptoms you will experience and what therapy may be prescribed to you. A lot of the book is focused on what will happen at school and what you will have to fight for in order for your child to not get lost in the shuffle.
The composition is a little odd: it starts out like a fairytale story about the author’s son, who is able to overcome everything with the resources they gave to him, and then it transitions into something like an encyclopedia about NLD & AS.
A good choice for teachers and parents who are seeking to understand nonverbal ld and Asperger's issues. Both a personal perspective from a mom raising a nvld child and professional explanations are offered. Needs a follow up with more specific and extensive resources for teachers.
