Dominique Lapierre

At the age of thirteen, he travelled to America with his father who was a diplomat (Consul General of France). He attended the Jesuit school in New Orleans and became a paper boy for the "New Orleans Item". He developed interests in travelling, writing and cars and later traveled across the United States as a young man.
In the early 1950s Lapierre was conscripted into the French army. After one year in a tank regiment, he was transferred to SHAPE headquarters to serve as an interpreter. There he met a young American Army corporal, Larry Collins, a Yale graduate and draftee. They became instant friends. When Collins was discharged he was offered a job with Procter & Gamble. Two days before reporting to work, the United Press offered him a job as caption writer at their Paris office, for much less money than offered by Procter & Gamble. Collins accepted the offer and was soon picked up by Newsweek to be their correspondent in the Middle East. When Lapierre was discharged, he found work as a reporter for the magazine Paris Match. Several years later they decided to join forces to tell a big story which would appeal to both French and anglophone audiences. Their first bestseller Is Paris Burning? sold close to ten million copies in thirty languages. In this book they mixed the modern technique of investigation journalism with the classical methods of historical research.
After that they spent four years in Jerusalem to reconstruct the birth of the State of Israel for the book O Jerusalem!. Lapierre is proud that after spending a great deal of time in Jerusalem he knows each alley, square, street, and building in the Holy City intimately.
Two of Lapierre's books – Is Paris Burning? (co-written with Larry Collins) and City of Joy – have been made into films. Lapierre and Collins wrote several other books together before Collins' death in 2005.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award in the 2008 Republic Day honors list.

Ignore the title. This is an excellent book.
I liked how Lapierre wove together all the different story lines as he described the early years of the discovery of the AIDS epidemic. It's fascinating to hear how it emerged and think about how helpless people felt when they couldn't identify the root cause or even understand how AIDS was transmitted. And then they discover the virus and develop a test but doctors have to just sit by and admit to the patients that they have no cure. And then even when AZT comes around there are questions about how you run trials and determine if a medication works.
It's all very eerie to read so many years later when we know the scale of the disease now.
Anyhow, this is a fascinating read and I definitely recommend it.

Amazing book. Great insights of medical theories and humanism
woven into one another. I thought the book goes much deeper in detailing stuffs about
the deadliest diseases such as AIDS, Leprosy and more, and about the people who have
sacrificed their life to help the sufferings.
if you have a science/medical background then you are spot on. For me it
was a slow turner but enjoyed it.

Es mucho más que una novela. Es la historia de cómo surgió el SIDA en los EEUU y el impacto social que produjo. Magnífico. Emotivo y muy bien documentado. El único problema son los términos y conceptos médicos que utiliza, no siempre comprensibles.

“El contacto de una mano puede calmar las peores angustias con más eficacia que un discurso de consuelo”
Una obra muuuy interesante que relata el descubrimiento del SIDA de la mano de clínicos, investigadores y pacientes, y especialmente emotiva en su tercera parte.
Debo reconocer que al principio me costó engancharme (quizás porque me apetecía desconectar de la medicina), pero me ha merecido la pena acabarla.
La recomiendo porque una vez más pone de manifiesto la cara más humana y a la vez más egoísta del ser humano en una crisis de este calibre.

I read this book when I was like 10, I don't really know why—perhaps I found it over the table of the dining room and thought that this thick, long novel might be fun to read. Loved it. It's deep, it's intense, and it's also strange and inspiring.

Trudne do przebrnięcia. Fabularyzowana historia początków epidemii HIV ze specyficznej perspektywy.
Wydana była 9 lat po pierwszych opisanych przypadkach zakażeń to znaczy, że pisano ją w czasach gdy znacznie mniej wiedzieliśmy o wirusie niż teraz. Tłem jest też inny poziom seksizmu i homofobii niż aktualnie. Przy każdym opisie naukowczyń jest ocena ich urody (naukowczyni z Chin jest opisywana jako "chińska laleczka"), czy naukowcach w kółko wymieniane ich zasługi dla nauki.
Głównie jest to opis lekarzy; autor pokazuje ich jako niezmordowanych wojowników, którzy np. ofiarnie pokonują wstręt przy wypytywaniu osób chorujących o życie seksualne. Najmniej w książce jest perspektywy osób zakażonych HIV i ich bliskich. Sposób ich opisywania uderza homofobią.
Autor współpracował z Matką Teresą z Kalkuty i sporo rozdziałów jest o tym jak ją widział.
Aktualnie można by jej użyć do krytycznej analizy jak stygmatyzacja i homofobia pomagała epidemii się rozwinąć. Tymczasem dałabym wielki CW.

Sí y no.
Me parece un relato muy interesante de los primeros años del sida y la carrera para conseguir un tratamiento para frenar la epidemia que supuso. Y me transmite un esfuerzo impresionante para narrarlo de una forma admirativa hacia todos los implicados intentando mantener cierta imparcialidad.
Pero también me parece un golpe en la mesa para dejar clara la participación de Francia en esa carrera y la importancia que tuvo, que tanta excelencia de todos los profesionales podría no haberse repetido con cada mención y que se encuentra escrito de manera que alguien no relacionado con estos campos (biólogos, médicos...) le parecerá que tiene pasajes enteros de galimatías y, para los que les resultan familiares, resulta reiterativo, aunque curioso porque sitúa históricamente.

An amazing review of the history and impact of the HIV in the day to day life of doctors and scientists around the world that lived the hardships of these taboo disease when it hit the streets of big cities like New York, Paris and Los Angeles. The amazing storytelling, with facts and feelings sourrounding the principal health professionals that managed to first diagnose, name, treat and the patients that survived the HIV. As well as mixing it up with the heart felt story of an indian girl, with a cross to bear that managed to help others and herself in the process... A must read for every doctor, patient or family that have encountered someone woth HIV. Truly inspiring book.

Obra sorprendentemente amena para ser de no ficción gracias a los relatos personales de personas implicadas en el drama de los primeros años del sida de distinta forma: enfermos, médicos, investigadores... Es muy fácil de entender a pesar de que no se escatima en tecnicismos, todos muy bien explicados. Me ha parecido crudo y fascinante, sobre todo en el contexto de una nueva pandemia. Lo único malo es que falta mucha información por el tiempo transcurrido desde la publicación de la novela hasta hoy. Me ha dejado con ganas de investigar por mi cuenta.

Acabo de terminar este libro y se me hace dificil pensar en que otro pueda llegar a emocionarme tanto. Me ha parecido una maravilla lo bien documentado y explicado que esta un tema del que desconocia practicamente todo. Encuentro que el autor ha hecho un espectacular trabajo desarrollando a la perfecccion el tema en el ambito cientifico y transmitiendo tanta emocion al contar cada historia personal que aparece en la novela. Simplemente, excelente

Este libro cuenta el inicio de una trágica enfermedad, no quiero hacer un comentario sobre el VIH sino sobre los médicos, los investigadores que dedican tanto tiempo y esfuerzo para encontrar la cura de tantos males, realmente es admirable ese tipo de vocación y es tan bueno que sus esfuerzos se vean recompensados. Adicionalmente es admirable la vocación de la Madre Teresa y las hermanas de su Ministerio, que Dios las bendiga y use de acuerdo a Su voluntad.

Uno dei libri più belli di Lapierre narra due storie la prima è quella di una ragazza che viene accolta al lebrosario di Calcutta, dopo qualche tempo la ragazza si converte al cattolicesimo e diventa suora missionaria della carità e l'altra storia è quella della scoperta nei primi anni '80 di un nuovo virus quello dell'hiv. Poi quella ragazza diventa suora viene mandata a New York da quelli che in quegli anni vengono considerati "gli ultimi tra gli ultimi" i malati di Aids.

Un testimonio conmovedor, emotivo y tremendamente estremecedor sobre una de las mayores plagas que ha sufrido la humanidad, el SIDA, que además, si cabe, fue aún más perturbadora por atacar a sectores de la sociedad ya de por sí estigmatizados.
Es un libro maravilloso no solo por el rigor histórico, sino sobre todo por la viveza de los testimonios que relata.
No puedo describirlo con otra palabra que precioso.

Deberían haber 20 estrellas para poder valorar este libro! Cada una de sus páginas me hizo reflexionar sobre el ser humano y el valor de la vida! Con una prosa impecable y una delicada sensibilidad el autor entrelaza diferentes historias y realidades sobre una de las enfermedades más devastadoras del planeta. Ahora tengo una nueva perspectiva sobre el amor!

Although somewhat dated due to when it was published and how much medicine has moved on still a great read. Reading this during the COVID 19 outbreak really highlighted how very frightening it must of been to those effected when HIV itself was a new virus. The interweaving stories idea made it a page turner and made it a far less dry book than I half expected. This was a real human story

Very interesting and informative read, is able to intertwine an informational read with the stories in a chronological order to make you feel connected with each of the perspectives.
You really feel apart of the journey with them. Truly eye opening insight into AIDS epidemic for someone who wasn’t born yet.

Decided to re-read this book, and was every bit as moved and enraged as I was the first time around. Very interesting to note societal differences between AIDS in the early to mid 80s, when people with the virus protested and fought for treatments and were willing to take anything that stood a chance of slowing down the virus, and COVID, where people refuse to get vaccinated.

La storia della scoperta dell'AIDS e delle prime ricerche su questa malattia. Non privo di qualche merito documentario, questo libro è sostanzialmente uno spot a favore del farmaco AZT e di Madre Teresa di Calcutta che è tanto buona e brava.
