Miss Muffet wasn't the only little girl who was ever frightened by a spider. Many girls and boys, and even many grown-ups, are afraid of or repulsed by these eight-legged, creepy, crawly creatures. In this Gareth Stevens Imagination Library series readers will be treated to full-color, close-up photographs of some of the world's poisonous spiders. Easy-to-read text explains what each spider looks like, how it makes its web, hunts for food, and, most importantly, tells all about its bite. Hiding in silky funnel-shaped tubes, they wait patiently for prey to touch their webs. They are big, with large, powerful fangs, hairy legs and abdomens.
Funnel-Web Spiders is part of the Dangerous Spiders Series. It's a good reference read for kids. Each section has a picture and is 1-2 pages. The sentences are simple and to the point, not a lot of dry filler text. The sections include an Intro, What They Look Like, How They Grow, Where They Live, Their Webs, Hunting Food, Bites, and Enemies. After there is a section on More Info, in which books and websites are listed for more info on the subject. There's also a Glossary and Index in the back. The Glossary words are in boldface throughout the text for easy reference. This is a great simplified reference text for any child needing to learn more about this dangerous spider. My son, age 6, who loves spiders, loves reading these books for fun. Definitely a series I will look for whenever we need reference material on a specific spider.
