2001 Memories: An Actor's Odyssey

Rate this book
Paperback. Signed by Gary Lockwood on the title page. The cover is a little shelfworn with slight sunning to the front leading edge. A couple of small marks on the page block. Previous owner's dedication note penned (good natured with mild language) on the inside front cover. The binding is sound and all text is clear. CM

I wanted to punch Gary Lockwood in the face after reading this book.

I think he would understand. He admits that he's not the most likable guy in Hollywood, and revels inhabiting that bad boy persona.

The book's chapters alternate between a chronology of Lockwood's life and his experiences in the making of "2001: A Space Odyssey." Most of his personal life story appears to be getting in trouble for being smart, tough, and cocky, and genuinely not giving a shit what other people think. I appreciated the behind-the-scenes look at how Kubrick made "2001," but Lockwood certainly seems ready to take credit for a lot of what happened in the film.

I met Lockwood and his costar Keir Dullea on two occasions in the past 8 years. Dullea was charming, self-effacing, quiet, humble, just an all-round nice guy. Lockwood hit on every woman who either talked to him or walked by their table. "Hey, you ought to come see my beach house in Malibu!"

You haven't lived until you've seen a star of your favorite film, now as paunchy man in his late 70s trying to pick up women in their 20s and 30s.

I will say that Lockwood's book seems very much to be in his voice. The problem is that it just made me angry to read it. I couldn't handle more than a few pages at a time before I wanted to throw down the book and walk away.

The presentation looks like a bunch of hastily-typed pages that were collected together and bound. There are plenty of typos and spelling errors.

Lockwood probably doesn't give a shit about whether that bothers you or not.
