Terror stalks the Florida Everglades when a seismic event releases prehistoric creatures from a long sleep, and the monsters develop a taste for human flesh. Original.
{1993} Carnivores by Penelope Banka Kreps. The ol' bait and switch. For sure the marketing department. Not really any carnivores in this book. Ok, some but they don't do what makes them carnivores, know what I mean? This is a book about dinosaurs coming back to the Florida everglades and people who are reverting back to prehistoric alter egos. There is ALOT of scientific stuff about genes and DNA Yada Yada Yada that may be interesting to some but was absolutely mind numbing to me. It starts with the only kills in the whole book. Some guys on a boat in the everglades. Then we cut to a lady and her daughter, then a lady and her husband, then a psychiatrist, then a biologist and we even get a couple short chapters from the Alligator mom perspective. Why not. The little girl is having mental health issues cause she's turning back into a cave girl cause the shift in the earth's poles or something. Same with the lady. Sleep walking etc. Someone spots an ancient Alligator dinosaur. Scientific guys go out to find dinosaurs. Humans go to psychiatrist. World's meet. People talk. Stuff kinda happens but not really. It was one of those books where 200 pages in you're like, how is it possible I've read most of this book and nothing has happened. Seriously, what a let down. I just wanted a book about Alligators or crocodiles running amuck and eating people. I feel bad for the author though cause they obviously put a lot of work into the science jargon and then to have the marketing people be like, killer Alligator book. It's not even a horror book in the slightest. It's Jurassic Park lite.
The cover and the blub on the back of the novel have almost nothing to do with what this book is actully about. I was sort of disapointed as I went into it expecting a animal based horror and ended up with a medical si-fiish story instead. Still it was an excellent novel none the less.
Some weird radiation thing happens that sets off the "Genesis Gene," causing dinosaurs to be born in the Florida Everglades. Also, some people revert to Stone Age-type jungle dwellers. There were far, far too few monsters eating people in this book.
It started off amazing but the end was a letdown. It had the potential to be one of my favorites but, about 2/3rds in, it seemed like the author just went into a scientific meltdown and forgot about the animals- focusing more on the people.
