108 books559 followersI've always loved the written word. For as long as I can remember, I read as much as I could, as often as I could. Cereal boxes, newspapers, product packaging. Ebony, Essence, and Jet Magazine. Billboards. I loved it all. I read the entire Fear Street series, as well as the Sweet Valley Books, from Twins and Friends through Sweet Valley High. Each week I'd bring 15 or 20 books home from the library, and read them all before the due date.
Now, my mother owned a pristine, barely touched collection of Harlequin romance novels, and I was not to touch them under any circumstances. Well, as a teenager, you know what that meant. I read some of them, and got my first introduction to romance.
When I was sixteen, I picked up my stepmother's copy of Night Song, by Beverly Jenkins. The cover showed an obviously historical image of a black couple, against a beautiful backdrop, locked in a passionate embrace. With my love of history, I had to crack this book. What I read inside literally blew my mind. I was exposed to a wonderful, touching love story involving people who looked like me! What a thrill. To this day Night Song remains my favorite book, and I credit it with planting the seed of desire to write romance. I didn't get serious until many years later, but that's where it all began.

Imani Grant is a gorgeous dermatologist whose always the bridesmaid never the bride, but at her college roommate's wedding she runs into her high school sweetheart Xavier. Not only did Xavier break her heart but he's running for councilperson and her past would disrupt his campaign so Imani tries her hardest to keep her distance even as Xavier continues to pursue her.
I hope everyone realizes that they should take my reviews with a salt of grain because every book has it's intended audience and usually that audience isn't me so just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean you won't.
That said, I really really couldn't get into this book. Not only was the writing mediocre, which I usually ignore when reading romance, the whole plot and characters irritated me to no end. Most of the characters just felt two dimensional or like caricatures. Also the plot, (trigger warning) . That was the most annoying but there were other more subtle plot holes like and and .
Anyways I just couldn't enjoy it, but I'm sure people who like fluff and just want a comfy feel good read could enjoy this, the book just isn't for me.

Dr. Imani Grant is in Atlantic Beach to be a bridesmaid, again; it doesn’t help that her mother is always pestering her to get herself a boyfriend. Imani’s college roommate Georgia is getting married, which makes her think of Xavier Whitted, Imani’s high school boyfriend. To Imani’s astonishment, Xavier is the best man! Xavier had ended the relationship 10 years ago, and they both went their own way. Xavier is now a respected businessman, active in the community, and intends to run for city council. They both discover quickly that the old chemistry is still there, but Imani has a secret that might make any sort of relationship impossible…
Kianna Alexander was a new author to me, and what a wonderful writer she is! Her prose is elegant, understated, and I felt bathed in a soft, glowing glow; it all felt so lovely and cozy. I love that both Imani and Xavier are nice, normal, successful professionals; they both have dependable and sympathetic relatives and friends. I loved Maya, Imani’s cousin and manager of Imani’s dermatologist practice, and I thought it was a shame that Maya already had her happy-ever-after, because I would have loved to read her romance. Maybe the author could take us back someday?
BACK TO YOUR LOVE is the first book in Ms. Alexander’s new series, Brothers of Theta Delta Theta, (that’s a mouthful!), and as expected the characters of the future instalments are introduced, and this is extremely well done; it never feels like some obligatory filler or heavy set-up, as it often happens. Each character is well defined, and I really enjoyed meeting Xavier’s frat brothers. Why then may you ask the low rating? Xavier appeared the perfect boyfriend; he is wonderful, and is willing to wait until Imani is sure she wants them to get back together; he is caring, charming and a real gentleman. Until that dreaded misunderstanding, miscommunication, lack of communication, the bane of the romance novel. Imani’s secret has to do with something that happened in Atlanta, and I was dying to know what it was, and it was dreadful indeed; Imani was ashamed, and I could understand why. But. But, why, oh why, couldn’t this intelligent woman speak when it was time, even if she’d had to be a bit tougher with Xavier and tell him to listen? Of course, the excrement hit the fan, and I was utterly shocked at how the perfect, understanding, and kind gentleman could suddenly turn into such a jackass! And that got me angry, and I stayed angry. Xavier’s frat buddies were on Imani’s side, but Xavier, well… I had totally loved Imani until that point, when a strong, confident, brave woman turned into a limp noodle, and I lost all respect for her with how she reacted to Xavier’s lack of trust. He should have grovelled for a solid hundred pages! What happened to Imani was awful, and I would have expected some compassion from Xavier, the knight in shining armour to his community, but no. I was mad at him for behaving so selfishly, but even more at Imani for how she handled it. And, unless I missed something, I don’t believe the reason why they had broken up in the first place was ever addressed. BACK TO YOUR LOVE had been such a lovely, adult, pleasant second-chance romance until the “misunderstanding” ruined it all for me. Sometimes, I can brush aside some event that displeases me in a story, this time I just could not.

I really like that this series is based on men in a fraternity and shows them in a very positive light. There can be lots of negativity when it comes to fraternities and sororities, so I always enjoy a book that isn't negative.
Imani and Xavier were high school sweethearts that reconnect at a mutual friend's wedding. Xaviar isn't shy about wanting her back in his life and sometimes I thought he was too pushy. But I did appreciate it when he did take a step back. Imani has a secret that will affect Xaviar and really waits too long to tell him. I thought she should have been a little more forthcoming considering the status of their relationship. But it all worked out in the end.
I'll admit to skimming/skipping over the sex scenes. I'm not opposed to them but I think it was the mood I was in that I didn't care to read about them. The scenes were very tasteful from what I did read and I appreciated that fact.
There are some real life issues that Imani and Xavier deal with and I thought it was handled really well (can't give away too much).
An enjoyable read overall.

I was so excited going into this book. I thought it'd be about a workaholic who had a messy break up with this girl years ago and they end up meeting at their friends' wedding. But honestly, this book was just a mess until I decided that it wasn't really for me and gave up on it.
Firstly, just because this book wasn't for me doesn't mean it isn't for you, so you can read my review and if the things that bothered me about it aren't bothersome to you, you can give it a chance and hopefully have a great experience.
Secondly, trigger warning.
Okay, so let me start out by saying I couldn't care for any of the characters. Xavier was literally the most annoying hero to me. He's described as a saint, I'm not even exaggerating, Imani talks about him like he's God on earth. Look, don't get me wrong, it is admirable when someone takes the time of their busy routine to help children who needs it, but they mention it way too much. I remember being ten pages in and the protagonist said "hearing him talk about his work in such a modest way" and I thought "I just started this book and I'm already done with talking about his charity work".
"Instead of money, my dividends are paid in the success of my mentees." I mean, seriously? Gag.
Another thing is how Imani always has to point out how attractive Xavier is, he doesn't "raise his arm" rather than "raise his muscled arm", it gets tiring after a while.
Now, after Xavier being painted as the greatest guy in the universe, when we finally get to the point where her secret comes out - which by the way was pretty obvious from the start and it just annoyed me that it kept being treated as the most mysterious thing - and instead of him being understanding and being there for her, he! actually! gets! mad! I'm never getting over this, he was such an asshole, you just find out the girl you supposedly love was raped and your reaction is accuse her of lying? Fuck that.
Imani was just annoying and stupid at times. She acted like he broke her heart all those years ago when in reality it was just that they were moving away from each other for college and it wouldn't make sense to continue dating. But then again, she dropped that shit pretty quickly so I don't really understand why it was brought up in the first place.
And that's all I read from this book, I don't know how it ends or if it gets better, I was just done with everything that I didn't care enough to stick around and find out.

I was really stuck between the 2 star and 3 rating scale because this book was hard for me to finish. The writing was okay and the plot was present, but this book just dragged on for me. Maybe it’s the fact that the hero is so perfect and their second chance at love came too easily, but nothing about this book excited me. This book tells the story of Xavier, who is an accountant, politician wannabe, youth center volunteer and Imani, who is a dermatologist. They were high school sweethearts, but were broken up when Xavier decided to "see" what life was like in college without a girlfriend. Fast forward ten years, Xavier and Imani see each other again at a wedding of their best friends and sparks fly like fireworks. The main event in this story is the fact that Imani has this "huge" secret that will ruin Xavier's chances of becoming a member of the city council.
First off, how could Imani and Xavier's best friend marry each other and they never run into each other before the wedding. Xavier was the best man and Imani was a bridesmaid. I did not understand that detail of the story. This story did not have enough momentum to carry it to the end and I was waiting for some drama, but I never got it. Only when Imani's secret comes to play, does the story kick off and becomes a little more interesting. Xavier did nothing for me because his character was too perfect for me. He is sweet, considerate, has awesome friends, chases after Imani to prove his love, and he volunteers at a youth center for Pete's sake. The man is perfect and I grab a book for a character with a little more depth and flaws to carry a story. Imani was a character with a shameful past and that is the only thing that kept me reading because I really wanted to know what happened to her. She was a sweet character, she loved her mom, and she is a driven business woman. Where is the conflict? There was barely any in the story and the details carrying the story is the political race, Xavier trying to woo Imani, and Imani trying to avoid Xavier but she fails miserably. The whole reason for me reading second-chance romance is for the reasoning behind the break-up in the first place and how the characters find love again. Nothing major happened causing them to break. It was just a young man needing space which is completely understandable, but I needed more. The break up is barely discussed and Imani is supposed to be so "hurt" over the breakup, but 2 seconds into having a conversation, she sucks his face off.
All in all the book was boring and it was not my taste.

Having your life in order, and finally feeling as if you are in control of your own destiny is important to Imani. Now a doctor with her own clinic, she’s overcome tremendous obstacles, personal and professional to get where she is. Of course, her mama still thinks all isn’t as it should be – her baby should be married by now, and when there are grandbabies to love and play with, she’ll know that her daughter is finally settled and one less thing to worry about, much. Now back in her hometown to be a bridesmaid, Imani is just hoping to get through this visit, celebrate, connect with old friends and then return to her own life.
Xavier is successful, driven and eyeing a seat on the City Council. What he didn’t realize until he spotted Imani is that the feelings that he’d had, since high school for her were still there. If only he hadn’t been such a jerk and broken her heart then. But, he’s grown and learned, and she’s never quite left his mind: he’s going to push, cajole, plead and charm his way back into her good graces, and get that second chance.
From the first page, this story drew me in, and the more I learned of Imani’s past and struggles, the more I wanted her to find someone like Xavier: she deserves a truly good and driven man, and he is just that. But, her hesitation is understandable, never really having recovered from that first break-up, and worried that some of her own trials and struggles won’t be easy for her to explain, she’s not ready to jump right in. But everyone, yes EVERYONE thinks (as I do) that these two are perfectly matched: from Imani’s cousin who will do anything to support, push and protect her, to Xavier’s fraternity brothers always ready with advice, problem solving and even a bit of meddling to redirect him.
So many moments in this story brought emotion, conflict, understanding and resolution, both individually and as a couple to these two. And despite Xavier’s very machismo and rather uncharacteristically harsh initial response to the events Imani shared that still burn her with shame and regret, his ability to find empathy and understanding (often with pushes from his friends) brought him to better understand her as the woman she has become, and allowed their connection to strengthen.
A wonderful story of second-chances, understanding, forgiveness and above all, love.

2 yawn-inducing stars for BACK TO YOUR LOVE.
When HS sweethearts Dr. Imani Grant and Xavier Whitted reunite years later at a wedding, the sparks are just as potent as all those years ago. Imani is the one woman Xavier hasn't ever been able to forget, and if the budding politician has his way, she'll be the wife he's been longing for. But Imani's got some skeletons in her closet, ones that could derail Xavier's political aspirations before they even get off the ground. Will they find their way as adults better than their doomed adolescent romance?
BACK TO YOUR LOVE is book 1 in the Brothers of Theta Delta Theta series, and it was one of the dullest books I've ever read. The whole book is one inane detail after another. She chose hazelnut latte for a 45 minute break between patients. He called his brother and discussed their other brother. Some deets are obviously great to read, but there was just too much filler in this one. Y.A.W.N.

With fury. At Imani. Huh? Worse, she went from fierce female to mopey mouse when he should've been kissing her ass from morning till night in apology for being a total douchenozzle. Also, there was so much left unanswered in BACK TO YOUR LOVE that it felt incomplete. But don't get me wrong, I didn't want to read any more anyway.
Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; some condom use; no BDSM/kink; discussion of sexual assault; no violence/murder.

I’m starting to think rekindling romances are becoming my new jam. I like how the hero and heroine's shared history means we don't have to sit through the getting to know you parts. This romance isn’t clean or anything but it is just such a sweet romance. From Imani’s family to the kids Xavier counsels this books full of characters who love each other in all meanings of the word
This book takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina and just has an amazing sense of community and world building, I was not surprised to discover Alexander was a southern belle herself, like there is a scene where Xavier orders a lunch with a Cheerwine which is such a regionally specific beverage.
Oddly, Imani and Xavier felt less like Millennials and more like Gen Xers. It's specifically stated that the characters are 10 years out from high school making them 29-30 at most, but they talk about listening to Mary J Blige at school dances, it just feels like an older reference. Also, Xavier refers to the 21-year-olds helping run his campaign as youngsters, and look I refuse to believe any Millennial trying to unseat an older incumbent wouldn't use social media to their advantage. It was just weird.
I do want to talk about how this book is being marketed. This book is without a doubt a black romance but it's not necessarily being marketed that way; it's cover blurb is by Kristin Higgins and a lot of the ad copy refers to Alexander as a mainstream author. Now, I've read both indie black romance and Kimani and I was curious how this would strike the balance and it really leans more towards the indie black romance side. This book definitely has some unapologetic blackness to it. There are no explanatory commas but I do think there are enough context clues if someone isn't familiar with everything going on.

May 5, 2020I am at the end and have decided to dnf this one. I am okay with miscommunication tropes in romance - most of the time it’s simply annoying. But this time, I just couldn’t get behind it. I am not usually one that makes a big deal of what books say to the wider world or bigger issues, but this time I will. When Imani (?) decides not to tell Xavier (?) about her assault because of the gag order, I was all for it. You shouldn’t have to disclose something like that to everyone. She hasn’t even told her parents. When the article comes out with the accusation that Imani had an affair with Gibbons (the man who assaulted her) his immediate reaction is to not believe her claim that it was assault because he deserved to know. Let’s ignore the fact that she warned him away and he continued pursuing her. Let’s ignore the fact that she’s domes everything she could to protect his political career. The women you love just told you she was assaulted -during a time you weren’t even together - and your immediate response is to call her a liar? Hard pass. That didn’t stop me from continuing. What did it was the fact that Imani - who has carried guilt and shame from the assault - starts betraying herself about losing the best thing that’s happened to her because she refused to tell Xavier about the assault. As Xavier is such a great guy- never mind the fact that he had wanted to tell her that he wanted to pause their relationship until after the election or the fact that he doesn’t believe her. I’m sure the happy ever comes and they find out the truth and come back to each other but I can’t get behind it.

I had such high hopes for this book when I read the overview on the back cover, but I was sorely disappointed almost from the beginning. With that being said, this may have just not been a good book for me.
I thought the initial character development for Imani was great! Strong, independent woman starting her own business who is overcoming a terrible event that happened to her in college. I loved how her story-line was set up but things went south as soon as Xavier showed up. All she talked about was how he broke her heart but BAM totally fine with hanging out with him alone shortly after. It was a bit ridiculous.
Xavier was annoying from the start. Another reviewer said it perfectly when describing him as being treated like a god. A god who bordered on stalking. He basically had no faults and refused to accept "no" as "no."
The moment where I basically threw the book across the room came when Xavier found out about the sexual harassment she faced in college and victim-blamed her and said she lied to him. They had been back together all of a month or something. Why the heck would she tell him to begin with? She doesn't owe her anything. And then she took him back! The victim blaming is my biggest pet peeve and the thing that makes a book go from "ok" or even "good" to "nope, never again."
I couldn't bear to read the end of the book in full because of how frustrated I was.

This book didn't mesh well for me. The writing in the beginning was a bit stilted and seemed like it was a bit forced but the book did have an ok plot. The characters had a great backstory and they changed throughout the book and the changes were great. I appreciated the strength of the characters, especially Imani, as she had to go through a lot and in the end she didn't compromise. She did what she had to do in order to survive in a time where she was ashamed of her life.

Back to Your Love was a good second chance at love romance – right up until our hero turned into a jerk, and I could not get back into the love part of this story after Xavier’s reactions to Imani’s “secrets”. I had serious doubts bout just about anything this man said after the way he tore into the woman he’s supposed to love. No. Although I was technically done with this couple at this point, I did finish the book just in case there was redemption down the line. Every reader is different, there are some lines that once crossed I will not view that character with the same eyes again. And I had the rest of the story to get past my reaction, but my feelings stayed the same.
I consider this a good book, one that I didn’t love or hate. It told a story, one there is an audience for and it was enjoyable to me up to a certain point. So I stand by the “good” rating of 3 stars.

I thought his was a cute second chance story. With so much time lost, there was a lot of trust to rebuild. The couple was cute together. The one thing I didn't love about it was the reaction of Xavier to the reveal of what happened to Imani. For me, it kind of showed his a bit of his true character. If he loved her, why wouldn't he believe her? She really gave in way to easily in the end and should have made him work for her forgiveness. There were also a few too many pop cultural references for me. You all know how much that drives me crazy.
This is a new to me author and I do want to see what else she has written. I am also intrigued to see the rest of the brothers find their HEAs in future books.

#rippedbodicebingo: originally read for beach read/beach town, but turned out the whole story wasn't set at the beach, just the first bit!
Characters felt flat and plot was thin: I also got frustrated with the hero AND the heroine a lot. (Especially when he didn't believe her about something important! UGH!!! Drop that guy like a hot potato!)

This is my first book by this author!! sometimes we find our soulmates very early! and sometimes we do stupid things and lose them thank goodness this couple from each other again. This is a sweet story of love found and lost with a little sizzle to it.

This was recommended by NYPL as part of their suggested titles for Black History Month. It looked fun, I want to read more romance, and this is a new author for me, so I borrowed it and dove right in.
Unfortunately, the "meet cute" portion to open the story is incredibly clunky. Imani and Xavier were high school sweethearts, he broke her heart, and ten years later they meet again at the wedding of mutual friends. (He's the best man, she's one of the bride's best friends - how likely is it that the bride would not have mentioned him to Imani??)
Oof! I mean, I know they're supposed to be awkward together after a bad break up and ten years apart, but .... dannnnng that is MEGAawkward!! I've had more scintillating conversations with strangers at engineering trade shows.
I know sometimes books can start awkwardly while info-dumping, but then develop into wonderful stories, so I kept reading. No such luck here, it stayed clunky and awkward all the way through.
I liked the characters, and I love the trope of childhood sweethearts reuniting, but there were some weird plot developments. And most of all, I really hated the inevitable resolution of the inevitable misunderstanding. Xavier was completely awful , and I didn't feel like the book acknowledged that, it was more along the lines of: "oh he's just being a man, he'll get over it." Not cool, book. Not cool.

Xavier Whitted and Imani Grant were high school sweethearts, until Xavier broke Imani's heart. But now years later, Xavier wants a second chance and he's not about to give up on winning Imani back, no matter how much she tries to push him away. However, when Imani's past threatens to derail Xavier's future prospect as a candidate in the race to win the city council seat, will Xavier trust in their love or will he crush Imani's heart all over again?
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Alexander, and I've got to say that it was a captivating, fast-paced read that entertained me from start to finish, because this a second chance romance story about high school sweethearts that find their way back to each other. Right from the beginning, this story had me hooked due to Imani being blind-sided by Xavier coming back in to her life. She wasn't expecting it, and she doesn't know whether she can give him another chance or not. Not with what happened in her past that left her ashamed to tell anyone about.
Both the main characters were riveting, but it was the secondary characters in Xavier's college mates that really added that extra something to this story. They're a bunch of smart guys that have really made something of themselves, and they're really close and would do anything for each other, which is proven by what they do for Xavier when they don't think he's making the right decision when it comes to winning Imani back. Then there's Imani's cousin; a woman who would do anything for Imani, especially when the heroine is struggling with the obstacles she has to overcome, if she's to have a second chance at happiness. Obstacles such as what happens to her clinic, telling Xavier about what happened to her in the past and dealing with the aftermath of Xavier's reaction to those situations.
As for the heroine, she's strong, brave and has overcome so much to get to where she is in her life. The obstacles she faces aren't easy, and I could understand why she was so hesitant to give Xavier a chance in the beginning, because of what happened to her in the past. Knowing that she has to tell him before he learns the truth in the worst way possible; a way that will put his prospect of winning the city council seat he's going for in jeopardy.
While Xavier, he's hard-working, kind, caring and does a lot of good in the community. What he does for Imani when things happen at her work proves he will do anything for the woman he loves, no matter whether her words hurt him when it comes to the kids he helps. However, I thought he was being a bit unfair to the heroine when the truth about her past was exposed, especially considering he didn't have all the facts. Why would she have reason to lie about what happened to her?
Overall, Ms. Alexander has penned a really good read in this story, encompassing a wonderful second chance romance, great secondary characters that I can't wait to read more about and two main characters that are a meant-to-be couple. The way this story ended had me cheering for this couple's happy ever after, because Xavier's friends are the type of friends any guy would be lucky to have. Who knew they could be so persistent and wily when it came to convincing the heroine to do what they want her to do to make things right with the hero? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up wonderfully, because no one could love the heroine more than the hero, and the surprise he has for her certainly proves that. I would recommend Back to Your Love by Kianna Alexander, if you enjoy second chance romances.

I hate that they generally glossed over rape.l and made it shift to victim blaming. No one is obligated to disclose their SA. And for him to blame her and not believe her is disheartening. Like way was it more about her blaming herself for not telling him and him honing in on him not being able to trust her instead of her not being able to trust him and or can’t be with a person who she can’t confide in. This is just a horrible take and I hate that she felt as though she needed to apologize and it was her fault. Plus with this being a second chance of romance, why were there no explanation to why he broke up with her in the first place if it affected her relationships going forward, especially since she soo easily fell in line with their relationship/situationship. I hate that everyone around her kept propping him up to her because he was actually a horrible person to be in a relationship with if that was his mentality. “ Oh you know how guys are.” Oh really, well leave them for the streets then.

Kianna Alexander has created a perfect steamy read with deep emotional attachments. It’s hard not to fall in love with the characters. Their crisis became mine and soon, I was lost within their story. Back to Your Love is all about mistakes, overcoming the past, and second chances. Forgiveness is a huge part of the tale. Impressive writing by this talented writer. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. Overall, I recommend it to everyone.

I know I'm late to the party but oh well. Just finished reading this, and I'm angry. I know these are fictional characters, but I feel like this book perpetuates the stigma that surrounds sexual assault victims. What happened to Imani was awful and traumatizing yet it felt like no one in her life was really trying to understand where she was coming from and how humiliating such an act can be. I could barely make it to the end because I was getting fed up with how the situation was being handled. It just seemed like everyone was placing the onus on Imani to reach out to Xavier after she shared such a painful experience to only not be believed by someone who claimed to love her. Even her mother and cousin seemed to overlook her pain. I agree that Xavier should have spent the remainder of the book begging and pleading for her forgiveness. I hope women out there know that this is NOT ok.

Loved the clear brotherhood between Xavier and his fraternity, and the close relationships they share with their friends and families. A little disappointed with the handling of Imani’s past and what feels like victim blaming. Would love to have seen stronger acknowledgment from both her character and his of how she was not at fault in any of what had happened and less of what felt like conditional support.
Overall enjoyed the setting and characters Ms Alexander created, and would read more of her work in the future.

Imani and Xavier meet again at a mutual friends' wedding and the sparks are still there from their high school love. Xavier is all gung-ho to give it another try, but Imani is hesitant. She needs to take it slow, for herself and her dermatology practice she's trying to get off the ground. Also Xavier is running for public office and she has a shame in her past she's been running from that she thinks will affect him negatively.
Okay I'm going start right out with the thing that bothered me most and I'm not going to cover the spoiler because I don't want anyone to be triggered. There is a point in this book where the FMC admits to the MMC (who says he loves her beyond all reason and wants her in his life SO badly), that she was SA'd and he doesn't believe her. That was really icky. So that's the first thing.
Also, it was a second chance romance--but they never explore why he left her all those years ago and broke her heart; they never address why he gave up on them, and he never apologizes for it. For me, that reads like a plot hole. Sorry. Their push/ pull was nice; that part was written well and it kept me interested, but I didn't like the way the side characters in the book acted like the onus was on Imani to just accept this man's love and take him back no matter what. He needed to be shown how to earn her, and everyone was too busy on their "he's a good man, Savannah!" I hated that for Imani. I know Xavier was bothered by what came out about Imani's past but his first concern should have been her, or else why step to her in the first place? He could have left her alone for all that. Plus, as a character he was little too self-righteous for me. He had a great presence in the community, but that didn't give him the right to dismiss the very real things that were happening to Imani (i.e the clinic break-in and how that tied to her dad, who had died of a violent crime). It felt like he cared about too many other peoples' feelings over hers in a few places. He wasn't the most likeable.
All in all, the writing style was good and the plot interesting enough that you make it to the end.
Okay I'm going start right out with the thing that bothered me most and I'm not going to cover the spoiler because I don't want anyone to be triggered. There is a point in this book where the FMC admits to the MMC (who says he loves her beyond all reason and wants her in his life SO badly), that she was SA'd and he doesn't believe her. That was really icky. So that's the first thing.
Also, it was a second chance romance--but they never explore why he left her all those years ago and broke her heart; they never address why he gave up on them, and he never apologizes for it. For me, that reads like a plot hole. Sorry. Their push/ pull was nice; that part was written well and it kept me interested, but I didn't like the way the side characters in the book acted like the onus was on Imani to just accept this man's love and take him back no matter what. He needed to be shown how to earn her, and everyone was too busy on their "he's a good man, Savannah!" I hated that for Imani. This was a strange read. A bit too descriptive for my taste and too many flashbacks of reality tv shows...Master chef, HGTV, etc. Additionally, some of the emotions seemed to not fit the narrative so it was also a confusing read. I just skipped the love scenes altogether because they seemed a bit YA...and the storybook ending was too predictable...quite a bit of moralising going on too, so this book was a looooonnnnnng time in finishing. Not sure if I will attempt another by the author if similarly conceptualised.

It took me a bit to get into this one as there is a lot of details outside of the love story that take up a lot of space. I enjoyed the story line and also the setting of NC was a nice change for a book. it was an interesting idea to so a series on frat brothers, but they are so close that is a great way outside of the normal blood brothers/families.
I plan to read the rest of the series but the books read slow for me. The writing and flow seem a little off to me.
Overall, 3 stars and 4 steam.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I have to say I enjoyed it. It told the story of Imani and Xavier and how they were each other's first loves and how they never got over one another as time went on in their lives. I enjoyed going on their journey from the beginning and learning what made them part ways, but then to read how they were able to find there way back to one another as well. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

This was a fun quick romance to read. I really liked the characters but some things were off in the book for me. The two main characters meet at mutual friends' wedding after 10 years ...and those friends live in the same town but while the groom makes multiple appearances the bride never does? Also the language was hit and miss for me - sometimes it felt a little stilted. But I still wanted to know what happened to the characters and read it in 3 days.
