Caravaggio was the most revolutionary artist of the Italian Baroque. The intensity and drama of his chiaroscuro style is matched only by his life. Outlaw, heretic, murderer and sensualist are some of the charges brought against him by his contemporaries.
Perfect size, 140 pp. plus notes, timeline, bibliography and index. If you want good reproductions of the paintings, forget it, you need to travel to see them, mostly to Italy! I feel I gained an understanding, to the extent possible, of why his paintings are so passionate, realistic, and violent, as well as why his colors became more subdued later in his short life.
Read this for a Baroque Art class I’m taking through Stanford Continuing Studies with Patrick Hunt, and I absolutely loved it! Such colorful descriptions of Caravaggio’s temperament, artistic development, and artwork. Really engaging from start to finish and I feel like I deeply understand Caravaggio now.
I read through a few chapters of this book, it's informative and fun, although I couldn't finish all of it. It's an insightful biography, and helped me find out quite a few things about my favourite artist!
