San Francisco, 2005: A drunk driver takes the lives of two Dane and Victoria.
They don't stay dead.
San Francisco, 2006: Dane suffers from chronic insomnia, relieved by short bursts of fitful sleep, filled with bloody dreams of a red headed woman who he has never met. He barely remembers the night he died, much less any specific detail of the accident.
Victoria suffers no such ailment. She, unlike Dane, remembers quite clearly what happened to them after they died that night. She remembers what happened to them long before that night; spanning back through the years to the past lives they have shared.
Their destinies collide when mystic and friend Mrs. Jeremy leads Dane on a quest to discover what happened to him and Victoria after they died one year ago. Now Dane must race against time to prevent the mysterious Victoria from killing his life partner, Jake, whose actions in his past lives come back to haunt him.

I will preface this review by saying that this book is of the LGBT genre. Dane has already had a heck of a time what with being in an accident and being clinically dead at the scene for a few minutes before he comes back into his body and life. Jake his partner is at a loss by the time we meet him in the book because Dane isn't himself anymore. He stays up all night and seems to be pushing Jake away. Mrs. Jeremy their neighbor is one hilarious old lady who takes no crap and makes sure the guys know that they are meant to be together no matter what. Little does Dane know he is connected to someone else who is out to do harm to those he cares about, mainly Jake. With the help of Mrs. Jeremy and a few other friends through the book, Dane does everything possible to make sure that Jake stays safe. And while this couple has to go through all kinds of different issues, they will hopefully come out the other side unscathed. Jake finally decides that he needs time to think and thats just what the person out to hurt him wants him to do is be without Dane for any amount of time other than for work. Thankfully Dane is able to work quickly and efficiently and is able to do what needs to be done. I have to say that I really did like this book and I hope that if you take the time to read it that you like it as much as I did.
Angakok starts off with a lot happening, which is really hard to get your head around so soon into a book. The story revolves around Dane and Jake, with many more characters thrown into the mix. Dane is involved in an horrific accident, and as a result sustained extensive injuries, and still, 1 year late, he is having nightmares, suffers from insomnia and is a mere shell of his former self. Jake is Dane’s partner. He is aware of the toll the accident has taken on Dane, because he has been there with him every step of the way. Their lives have not been the same since, with Dane almost completely closing himself off from Jake. Intimacy was non existent, and Jake has just about had enough. He cannot help Dane if he won’t let him back in. So Jake is ready to pack up and head back to the country. He never has liked the city, choosing to be there only to invest in property and make enough money to retire early. April/Victoria/Lily/Christian, to name a few, is somehow connected to Dane and his accident. She/He/It is bad news. A female version of Robert, from Guild of Immortal Women. She somehow hijacks a woman’s body, which seems to carry throughout the book with her hijacking multiple bodies. This allows her to wreak havoc and carry out her nasty revenge. All the drama she creates delights and amuses her. She also seems to have a connection to Jake, continuously referring to him as the dark haired one . I think it is safe to say that every single character is linked to April/Victoria/Lily. They all have pretty dramatic reactions when they spot her. Mrs Jeremy is trying to help Dane uncover all the mystery surrounding his accident and the events that keep happening after. He does end up solving the mystery, I think. A lot happens in this book. There are so many characters that all relate back to the main characters. It has so, so much going on all at once, it will make the reader’s head spin. I never imagined I would like a book that was written the way Angakok is, but not only did I like it, I really enjoyed it. I am still not sure exactly why I enjoyed it, but I just did. Maybe because it is different. Not the usual read for me. But I love discovering new authors and their writing styles. The challenge of trying to make sense of the plot, and to try to foresee the ending, is incredible. Dane ended up working out how everyone was connected and it ends with him and Jake together and alive. Having reached the end, I am still as confused as when I started. But the crazy thing is that I still really liked it. Half of the time I had no clue what exactly was going on, but that did not take away my enjoyment of this story. Angakok is a big mystery, with action aplenty and a whole lot to keep the reader busy. This book does not lack in suspense, surprise and a little humour. Another great read by David Alan Morrison.
4 out of 4 stars This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Morrison and I liked the story but I was really confused because the book starts off with a lot happening, which is really hard to get your head around so soon into a book but if you keep reading you will get the gist of the story. This story contains PTSD, murder, intrigue, mystery, intuition, paranormal, body snatchers and action. A drunk driver takes the lives of two strangers: Dane and Victoria. They don't stay dead. Dane and Jake are the main characters with a few more characters thrown into the mix. Dane is involved in a horrific motorcycle accident, and he doesn’t remember a thing about the accident and was actually dead for a few minutes. A year later he is suffering from Insomnia because of the nightmares he is having he is a shell of the former man he used to be. Jake is Dane’s partner he has given Dane a year to work through his issues because Dane has almost completely closing himself off from Jake. Jake has just about had enough their intimacy was non-existent, and he cannot help Dane if he won’t let him in. Their lives have not been the same since, the accident so Jake is ready to pack up and head back to the country. He never has liked the city, choosing to be there only to invest in property and make enough money to retire early. Victoria aka April/Victoria/Lily/Christian remembers everything about that deadly night and much more Victoria so she is out for revenge and unknown to Dane he shares a history with Victoria, one that will see him in the fight of his life to protect the ones he loves. She also remembers learning that she and Dane are not strangers; they share many lifetimes spanning back hundreds of years. In each of these lifetimes she was murdered and vows to take revenge on her killers.
Mrs. Jeremy is Dane and Jakes neighbor she is also a mystic and she discovers the connection between the two she also learns Dane must be the one to stop Victoria and balance the Karmic scales. I do have to say Mrs. Jeremy made me laugh so hard I had tears.. Can Dane prevent Victoria from killing his life partner, Jake, and who’s next on her list? By Tracy Manderson
Angakok – David Alan Morrison – 4 stars This is not my normal genre to read so I was interested in getting right into it. This book has it all; PTSD, murder, intrigue, mystery, intuition, paranormal, body snatchers and action. There are a lot of things to follow in the story and it can be a little confusing at times, but just keep reading and pay attention because you will catch on. David Alan Morrison does a very good job with guiding us along this journey. The story starts out with a motorcycle, a woman in a red dress and death. Dane doesn’t remember a thing about the accident and was actually dead for 4 minutes. It’s been 1 year since the accident and he has insomnia because when he sleeps, he gets glimpses of things in his dreams, things he can’t/doesn’t want to really remember. Victoria remembers everything about the accident and was actually d.e.a.d. April/Victoria/Lily/Christian is a “body snatcher” (for lack of a better term) and needs to keep moving on in life to fulfill her destiny. One of the things I like is that when the physical changes for Victoria, we are guided through her exploring the visual of the new body. “Her taut skin left none of the usual age lines people associated with a forty-five-year-old woman…” Jake is Dane’s partner, he is living is Plan A (or is he?) but he has a Plan B. Because everyone should have a plan B. He has a plan for his future. A plan that may or may not include Dane if he can’t get his act together. Then there’s Mrs. Jeremy… Mrs. Jeremy is Jake and Dane’s neighbor and she just KNOWS something is going on with Dane. She trusts her intuition and her ability to see things. She will help Dane discover what he must know. The story was an interesting concept, sometimes so visual in description that I had no problem ‘seeing’ what the author was describing. Twists and turns along the way kept me reading on.
David Alan Morrison either has way too many characters running around in his head or he has no clue how to write a book. I’m going with too many characters in his head because the storyline is very interesting. Angakok is a story with many of those characters. A few of the characters will make you wonder why they are even in the story at all and I have to admit at times I was a little confused. This story is about past lives and revenge and having an open mind about all things. So I kept my mind open and found this story pretty good. While this type of story isn’t my usual cup of tea it certainly held my interest and I do recommend it to others, especially those who like a little mystery with some adventure.
I was going to give this story three stars about half way through but luckily I like to finish a story before giving a review. So by the time I was finished reading I knew that four stars were well deserved.
David Alan Morrison gives his characters personalities all their own. Mrs. Jeremy made me laugh even when she was trying to be serious. She was so matter of fact and worldly at the same time. “People who embrace logic tended to lose their souls without realizing that while they might survive with half a brain, they’d die without a dream.”
This story holds a lot of information about different beliefs which is where having an open mind as a reader helps.
“ANGAKOK— an Inuit term for a shaman— usually of the “third sex” or homosexual, who holds the power to access the sacred mysteries of life ; one who can travel to other planes of existence to retrieve information to save innocents from harm.”
I am looking forward to reading more by David Alan Morrison.
Talk about traumatic events!!!!! Events that are wrapped in mystery and adventure! Characters that had special foresight for things and people around them! People being killed that will only be discovered by getting deep into this story! Activity that lands on the more paranormal side of things than would be considered typical in everyday life!
The author wrote a very detailed book in which a lot of things are going on in one story! The story started off with a character named Dane and the horrible event that happened to him and someone else in the story! An event that will affect several people in the story! Besides the traumatic experience that Dane had to endure there were other major things going on in this story! Some of the things that did occur in the story were not clear and made it difficult to make the connections in the book necessary to fully appreciate the story!
I think of all the characters mentioned in this story, Jake had to be the best one! He seemed to be a good guy, resourceful, and supportive of those around him. Jake was affected by the terrible accident that happened to Dane because of their close relationship. As the story continues, Dane realizes that there are certain things he must take care of or everything will change for good.
I found this story to be different than some of the stories I have read lately. It seemed a lot of characters had important roles that contributed to the story! A story that had depth of many levels and should be read because it is different than most stories. I am giving this story four stars.
I will start off by saying that this is a really hard book for me to review. I'm not sure where to start. There is so much that happens in this book and so many details and different characters that they almost make things more confusing to follow. However, there is so much depth and variety in this book that it is sure to connect with just about any storyline you like to read. This book starts off with death, which ties into a lot of mystery, secrets, paranormal angle, commitment, love and even some humor thrown into the darkness.
Dane and Victoria both die in an accident and that's where the similarities end. Dane still suffers from that night and it affects his relationship with his partner Jake. He has nightmares and insomnia and his personality has become short tempered, Dane works on trying to figuring out the mystery of what actually happened the night of the accident. He doesn't remember the details, but is trying to piece it together.
Victoria knows the secrets of the night the accident took her life and Dane’s. She is out for revenge and enjoys all the pain and suffering she is causing others. She gets excited when she takes another identify.
Will Dane find the answers to his past? Will Jake be able to stay by his side or will he finally get fed up and leave him? Will Veronica get the revenge she seeks? Get ready for lots of twist and turns while you ride this roller coaster of a story.
Angakok By David Alan Morrison ☆☆☆☆ This novel is a standalone, although it has reference to Guild of immortal women. This book is a paranormal book that starts with a terrible accident.
Dane suffers from insomnia and nightmares of his accident. His dreams are filled with a red headed woman he never met. Dead for 4 minutes and has no memories of the time before the accident.
Jake is Dane's life partner. While their relationship has suffered since the accident. Jake wants to help rebuild the relationship and be there for Dane.
Victoria remembers the accident clearly. She also remembers her life as April, Lily, and Christian, long ago. She is out for revenge and will stop at nothing to obtain it.
Two people Dane and Victoria died, yet they do not stay dead. Dane comes back after 4 minutes, but Victoria comes back as a redhead in a green dress. Causing trouble and death all over San Francisco. In the meantime Dane is looking for answers to the bloody nightmares, left buy the redhead in the green dress. David Alan Morrison writes his story with interesting avenues, that all come together at the end. While his book is very busy in the beginning. He gets to his point and the story is well worth the read. His book has a little PTSD, murder, mystery, body snatchers, paranormal and action. While there is a lot going on David Alan Morrison brings is all together, and you're pleased with the ending as I am. I hope you enjoy this book as I have.
David Alan Morrison has created a weird yet unique lgbt story with Angakok. I have honestly never read a book quite like Angakok, at first it was difficult for me to get into and all I kept thinking is what on earth is going on. The story was a bit hard for me to follow, I kept going though, I was not going to let this book go without a fight and I’m glad I kept going. “ANGAKOK— an Inuit term for a shaman— usually of the “third sex” or homosexual, who holds the power to access the sacred mysteries of life; one who can travel to other planes of existence to retrieve information to save innocents from harm.” It starts out with an accident by a drunk driver that kills both Dane and Victoria the previous year…. except they didn't stay dead. Dane starts suffering from insomnia, on the rare chance that he does manage to get some sleep it is full of bloody violent nightmares and a red head whom he has never met. He can not remember very much about the night he died. Victoria however can remember everything from that specific night, along with many similar nights from previous years, and previous lives, she always remembers. Who will win in this epic battle of karma? Will it be Victoria in her quest or Dane as he learns who he really is and tried to remember that one fatal night.... This was a unique book and one you will not regret once the pieces start to fall into place for you.
Angakok takes a little bit to get into because there is so much happening but after a few chapters it gets really good, so hang in there. David Alan Morrison wrote Angakok almost like a documentary, which was an interesting way to read this book. It starts off with Dane being involved in an accident, which is taking him a while to get over. Jake is Dane’s partner and he is struggling with a way to help Dane move forward instead of being stuck in the past. When Dane realizes that he is having so “side effects” of dying and then coming back, he makes it his mission to figure it all out. Victoria was also involved in the accident and she is having the same issues however she is out for revenge. Then there are other characters that effect Dane but he is not sure how just yet. When his loved ones are suddenly in danger, he will do anything to protect them. I really enjoyed the many different aspects of this book; there is murder, mystery, love, secrets, paranormal and so many more. I was really trying very hard to figure it all out for Dane but there are so many things to wrap your head around that it made it almost impossible to figure out before it was your time. I did have a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know what happened. I have to say that I have not read another book like this and I would love to read more.
This novel was hard for me to get into because it left me confused as to what was going on during the book. Because there is a lot of different things happening in this novel, it does get confusing. While it was hard for me to follow along with the story, I rated this novel a 4 because it did have a wonderful plot and the characters were well developed and you could understand them. David Alan Morrison is a great writer with an extremely unique way of writing down this story. His choice in characters and how they portray themselves will leave you laughing at some of the things they say or do. There are sub characters that also play an important part in the novel. The novel has a lot of different elements to it such as PTSD, murder, intrigue, mystery, intuition, paranormal, body snatchers and action to name a few. Because there is a lot of different things happening in this novel, it does get a little overwhelming. The story does revolve around Dane and Jake, who are life partners. Jake always has a plan A but he has a plan B for when plan A doesn’t work out. Everyone should have a plan B right? What happens when Karma decides to pay you back for your past misdeeds? Victoria is a body snatcher who delivers retribution to those who Karma decides needs it. When she goes after Jake, Dane is the only one who can help.
This is the first book that I have read from David Morrison and it’s definitely different from what I have ever read. Come prepared to start this book and be thrown right into the action.
We first meet Dane who was in a terrible car accident and sustained many injuries that never really fully healed. Even though its been a year he still suffers from migraines and has issues sleeping. Jake is Danes partner. He has been with him since before the accident and has gone through the healing process with him. Unfortunately, Dane is still having issues and has been closing himself off from Jake and this has hurt him a great deal. It’s getting to the point that enough is enough and he’s ready to pack up and leave.
There is a person that you’ll meet that goes by several names that is connected to Dane from the accident. This person can hijack anyone’s body and use it to their will. She causes a lot of drama and pain in people’s lives. Its something she thrives on.
Dane is trying to uncover the mystery behind his accident and the events that keep occurring since. A lot happens in this book to make your head spin. I felt like there was a lot of information you as a reader have to keep track of which can be overwhelming but it all comes together. Overall it was a good book. It’s definitely a very unique read and I would read more from this author.
This book is about Dane and Jake, with quite a few background characters added in. I did give it 4 stars because Angakok does start off with a lot of stuff happening. It can get really hard to follow. Dane was involved in a horrific accident that has left him a shell even after a year. Jake, Dane’s partner, is very aware what the accident has taken because he has been there every step of the way. Jake is Dane’s partner. Their lives have not been the same since. Dane has pretty much closed himself off. Jake has about enough of all of it. Jake is so ready to pack up and head back to the country. April, she goes by many names, is somehow connected to Dane. She possesses a body and starts drama. It's all to please her and amuse her. All she wants to do is carry out her revenge. Does she have a connection to Jake? Why do they all have a dramatic reaction to her? Will Dane every be able.to uncover all the mystery after his accident? All the stuff going on is so very important to the plot and what's going on in the book. It is a lot of information sometimes but it is a really good book. I liked this book because it was a different genre And a different writing style then what i'm used to. I'm not a fan for life.
Book Review Angakok Author David Alan Morrison Four Stars David Alan Morrison is a really good author and his plot was well intentioned. Yet I was lost from the beginning. There are more characters in this book than truely need to be and it was very confusing and hard to keep track of. The flash back into past lives and the trying to figure out who was who in those past lives and why there were conflicts. It just got to be too much and it was a real struggle for me to get through. There are several of todays issues in this book though. LGBT is a big part of this as well as one of the characters is suffering from PTSD. The author seems to put a LOT of emphasis on the fact that Mrs. Jeremy is fat, which yes is a description we needed to understand her slow moving yet it isnt something that needed to be thrown out there through out the book. David Alan Morrison is a very creative writer and his imagination went rampant in this book. If you have a time to sit and involve yourself in a book that has more flashbacks than it seems real action then this book is for you. If you arent opposed to multiple personalities and trying to keep them all straight then you will love this book.
Let's start with the cover art ......Absolutely brilliant , clever actually . When I started reading this Victoria has a memory and it's captured beautifully by the cover .
Dane and Victoria were in a car accident , both died but both never stayed dead......
Dane doesn't really remember much of that night but he struggles to sleep and when he does he's haunted by nightmares. He's not the same man as betrothed accident, he's become moody and snappy and is quick to get angry .....
Victoria on the other hand can remember everything about that fateful night and more ....Victoria is out for revenge an unknown to Dane he shares a history with Victoria , on that will see him in the fight of his life to protect the ones he loves.
Then there's Mrs Jeremy , a foul mouth that could make any sailor blush and a taste for camel cigarettes, what a character . She's convinced that Dane ha some paranormal side effect from the accident and she's not far off and she makes the connection between Dane and Victoria.....
Angakok was eerily different and while reading I couldn't help but hum the tune from that Denzil Washington movie " Fallen"......Time is on my side.......
So while I loved the authors pretense of this story and the characters I have to be honest and say there were just so many weird and confusing parts in this book too.
Dane and Victoria die when they are hit by a drunk driver but they do not stay dead and what happened to Dane might destroy his relationship with Jake.
There were a lot of paranormal aspects in this book which I loved and on the edge of your seat moments where you hold your breath hoping for the best for these characters too. But there was also parts that were just so confusing and I really had a hard time figuring out what was going on.
You get action and suspense in this book, you will also get mystery too while Dane and friends try to figure out who or what is behind everything that is going on. I am just so on the fence right now on how I feel about this book.
So I will leave this review with I liked this book but I sadly just did not love it due to the confusing and weird parts I am still trying to figure out...
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
This was definitely different than any other book that I have read. I was pleasantly surprised.
You will really need to pay attention as you read. You will meet several different characters and lots of details will be shared. Angakok has mystery, murder, paranormal, action and so much more.
Dane and Victoria were in serious accidents that will change their lives. Dane has no memory of the accident and is having nightmares which are causing insomnia and issues with his partner Jake. Victoria remembers everything, she is seeking revenge. Victoria shares a history with Dane, which will put him in a fight to protect his partner. Can he keep Jake safe?
The secondary characters were great. I really liked Mrs. Jeremy, she added quite a bit to the story. I had some LOL moments with Mrs. Jeremy as well. I liked Angakok but it seemed like there was so much to keep track of at times. Thank you to David Alan Morrison for an interesting read. 1-click and get started today.
Angakok is a novel by David Alan Morrison. This is my first novel by this author.
In San Francisco, 2005, a drunk driver takes the lives of Victoria and Dane.
A year later, Dane doesn't remember anything of the accident. He suffers from chronic insomnia and when he does he sees through the eyes of a red headed woman who murders people but he can do nothing about it.
Victoria on the other hand, remembers everything. And she seeks to take revenge on her killers. Dane tries to stop her before she kills anyone else.
When first reading this, I was unsure if I was going to like it. It had all the elements that I love: mystery, murder, paranormal. But while I enjoy all these elements, I was confused on the story. The writing was a little hard to understand though the plot was really interesting.
There are a lot of characters to keep straight in this novel.
I will definitely read this again. Some books don't instantly click the first read through and you enjoy it more the second time. This may be one of them.
Angakok by David Alan Morrison was a first read by this author for me. This book is not in my normal genres of reads but it was still interesting. This book deals with LGBT and also in the paranormal as well. I will preface by saying I was very lost for some time as so much was happening between flashbacks, many extra characters and just all around balance of what was happening. It did pick up some the more you got into the story. Dane and Victoria are involved in a car accident and both die. Dane is only dead for moments but is plagued by dreams of being in someone else's body killing random people. When a mystic finds the reasoning behind what is going on and the connection between Dane and Victoria, the must make a plan of how to stop her as Danes partner is next on her list. I just felt I didn't connect well to the story but it was well written, an interesting storyline and just all around a good read if you're a paranormal fan.
