On the outside, Mayr seems to have it a successful career as Head of the Guard for a prominent politician, family and friends who adore him, and the attention of beautiful women. But appearances are a good way to bury secrets, including the fact that while Mayr is a romantic at heart, searching for the one person to share his life with, his lovers keep leaving him.

When his last girlfriend takes him back and suggests an intimate night with Tash, one of her lovers, Mayr reluctantly agrees. The last thing he expects is to fall hard for Tash, who is nothing like Mayr's previous lovers—and about to undertake the Uldana Trials. If Tash fails, he'll likely die. If he succeeds, he must give up Mayr, and become the latest to leave Mayr standing alone with a broken heart.

My notes:
"It was never a good solution when the proposed solution to fix a shattered relationship and wounded trust was another man"
- as though this is often something women suggest? I mean, I'm not a heterosexual but this seems odd? Maybe it's a future thing.

The casual mentions of violence and threatened violence against these women because they hurt Mayr's feelings made me uncomfortable. He neglects telling Aeley about his failed conquests because he's scared she'll go after them? The comment about, were Sarene a man, Mayr would have punched her? This is not okay.

It's weirdly woman hating. Like every woman aside from Aeley and Lira are just awful and we're supposed to say "Poor Mayr. Why does every woman treat him poorly. Poor guy."

Originally played as Mayr thinking he's running these women off but he's not - had this continued, it would have made him a sympathetic character but then it turns into "all these women are so cruel to me" and "they lie to me about why they don't want me". It's just weird and it makes me uncomfortable and it seems to operate on Nice Guy Syndrome logic. Like, sometimes things don't work out. You don't have to demonize these women or blame them like they're monsters for not wanting to be with you.

Mayr’s lovers always leave him. Tash’s lovers either walk away or he pushes them out of his life. Both men feel unlovable or unworthy of love. Until they meet each other.

This well-developed read focuses on the emotions and dynamics of the relationship that grows between these two men – despite both.

Mayr is Head of the Guard for the ruling family. He’s strong, brave and a ruthless adversary. He possesses a quick wit and flippant attitude, and his sarcasm is on point. He has some GREAT lines in the story. But that’s Mayr the Head Guard; Mayr the brother and friend. Mayr the man is sensitive and drowning in low self-esteem. The women who pass through his life are only there for the sex and status of being with Head of the Guard. However, they always have their eyes peeled for the next best thing, and leave Mayr. Poor Mayr always convinces himself he’s in love and is shattered each time he’s abandoned. He wants romance and feelings and love – but all he ever gets is used. When a former lover returns (the one and only time) to Mayr, it is while trying to please her, he meets Tash.

Tash (Halataldris) is a priest, moving through the levels of priesthood. He’s not a man with a spiritual calling, but rather a tortured soul seeking redemption and atonement for his criminal past. The gang lifestyle he was forced into at a young age, was also part of the reason those he cared for always walked away from him. When Tash finally escapes the cruel world of the gang, he decides the only way to make up for the people he hurt is to spend the rest of his life helping others. He has no problem with his decision until he meets Mayr.

These two! It was almost painful to watch their psyches war with each other. In their professions, they were confident men to be admired. But once they stepped away from their jobs, the self-loathing was intense! Mayr internalized every single situation, finding a way to blame himself. All Tash could think about was his early life, the people he hurt or didn’t try to save, and the family he walked away from. This made him purposely avoid love because he felt he didn’t deserve it. So blinded by their emotional barriers, neither could truly see the shortcomings of others. Sarene, the woman who brought the two men together, was absolutely wretched! But before Tash entered the pictured, Mayr was convinced he loved her – I just couldn’t figure out why. The ‘literary psychologist’ in me believes the men purposely…subconsciously…sabotaged themselves, still trying to pay for previous sins.

The build of Mayr and Tash’s relationship takes places during Tash’s trials to become a Uldana priest. If Tash is successful, he will be unavailable to Mayr. If he survives the trials.

The author’s amazing job in developing these complex characters, drew me in and held my attention. The bonds they share with family and friends are strong and unbreakable, and I believe what continues to move them forward, even though both men may not realize it.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Four”, and even though I did not read book one of this series, this book stood on its own, with no unanswered questions or loopholes. I recommend this exceptional read.

Enjoy!

This is book two in the series and it can be read as a standalone. I did not read the first book and I did not get lost. There was enough background about the characters to not have to read the first book. But I do want to go back and read it.

This was an enjoyable read. I was a little surprised. Sometimes fantasy books just are not my thing but this was a good one. The details about the world that the author created  seemed so real to me. I felt I was in the story.

The characters were fantastic. Mayr was a good strong character I really fell in love with his character. He was also had some sense of humor.

The writing of this story was very well done. It was also a fast page turner for me. If you like fantasy books this is for you. You will fall in love.

I received a eARC to give a honest review.

First this book isn’t one where you need the first book to completely understand this one. The first book would give background to some characters and the history but not reading it doesn’t make this book less understandable or less wonderful.

This is a story of two men on a journey. A journey for forgiveness, redemption of guilt, and love. Mayr and Tash have both done things they aren’t proud of. Both wear the marks of the guilt of their actions. One turned to religion and the other to giving things up. Both feel they are unworthy and are afraid that they are not wonderful people and that people walk away from them because they are unloveable. Both are wrong on those fronts.

Tash had made bad decisions and is paying the price. He had to sacrifice alot to keep others safe but he still felt he needed punishment. he felt that he didn’t deserve love and that love hurts so he turned to being a priest and sacrificing allowing someone close to make up for his past transgressions. In reality this is a very sweet, caring and amazing man. He is patient and kind. I love how he takes care of Mayr even when it was hard for him. How he wanted to be honorable. I didn’t appreciate his sacrifice at the end but that worked out for the best thanks to his journey to the Four and Mayr fighting for him and being there even when Tash didn’t think he would be. That he didn’t deserve it. Mayr completed Tash as he did Mayr.

Mayr was the most adorable fiercely loyal and fierce head guard. He wanted so bad to be loved and feel safe that when those that didn’t fit him walked away he felt it was him. that he was unworthy and unlovable. It breaks the heart to see. He is so kind and giving. His love of family is wonderful and the pain he feels over Iliane was heartwrenching. What he was willing to do for Sarene so they can be together was so hard to see. But it also gave him Tash. At first he was confused by Tash. Then the attraction was too much and they came together. Not in the intimate moments one would expect but by getting to know one another and supporting one another. By being there for each other no matter what. Mayr was there when Tash needed him the most. throughout the Uldana trials even after Tash said they could no longer be lovers but friends he was there. When Tash pushed him away he was still there. He defended him, protected him, took Tash’s wrath and helped bring him back from the brink. When Tash crushed both their hearts because he was trying to make up for his past transgressions Mayr was there after his pity party. He fought to the end for Tash. It was a beautiful sight to see. he fought for the man he was and the love and respect they had for one another. He fought for the one that completed him. Tash needed to go through the journey though to realize where he needed to be. That ending was so swoony and beautiful.

A wonderfully written, adorable and beautiful book on love, support, respect, friendship and completion of one another through their love. A book on forgiveness, sacrifice and family. The story flows seemlessly and is endearing and glorious. The characters draw you to them and you will love and feel for Tash and Mayr from the beginning hoping they will find what they need and find each other. Their love for one another is felt in their actions, words and being there no matter what. They have a great family base that will entertain you and have you smile and Tash and Mayr complete each other. You see that in each others presence they are calmer, more confident and at peace. they seem to be the balm for the other’s soul and the love just overflows between them with each glance and action of standing by each other’s side no matter what. A great tender tale that warms the heart and has you smile.Ms Leah gives us a complete love story that not only binds the lovers together but has them become complete for their souls are puzzle pieces that fit one another and gives Tash and Mayr peace, love and a calmness that has them feel safe and that they are where they belong in each other’s arms.

Four and a half stars!
I absolutely adored this story. I loved the way Mayr and Tash circled each other and denied their feelings despite being obviously head over heels for each other. How they overcame obstacles in their path and were completely devoted to each other knowing they had no chance of a future together. I loved the way both Mayr and Tash fought to be together and fought each other getting in the way of what they think they deserve. The way they love each other no matter what is in their path is absolutely beautiful and I couldn’t put the story down. My heart hurt for both of them and their troubled pasts. But they healed each other and it was amazing to watch those transformations.
Mayr was so broken. He put on this front of confidence and assurance that embodied the idea of “fake it until you make it”. I hated that no one saw him like he really is but when he finally made it I was in awe of all he went through. There were times I wondered if he would drown in his emotions they were so all encompassing. The scene right at the end where he sees the person he never expected to see. I was a little overwhelmed right along with Mayr. But it was the perfect ending for him. It was the last thing he needed to finally feel complete.
Tash was so clear in some places but others he was a mystery. Not ever getting to see a scene from his point of view was a tiny bit frustrating. But at the same time if we did it would ruin the magic in a sense. Only ever getting Tash’s emotions through Mayr’s eyes made them that much sweeter when we get them. As a reader you cherish them a little but more. Getting to see his history unfold as Mayr asks questions and Tash goes on his Trials was wonderful to see. He has gone through so much and has so many things that need healing. I was astounded by what all he went through with the Trials but was proud of him for sticking to his faith. I adored the culmination of his Trials. Like Mayr says, he talks so pretty and has wonderful words to say. I despaired these two would never get and stay together at times. But I should have had faith like Tash did.
I loved the world Ms. Leah built. Despite not reading the first book, I was never lost or confused. I got immersed in the world quickly and easily. The way the government is set up and how the religion is intertwined with everything. It’s subtle but a constant presence that manages to be consuming without being overpowering. The varying degrees of faith each character has is a testament to how gentle that faith is. The vastness of the actual world is a bit surprising at first but it blends in quickly and you feel as if you’re there with everyone in this one city. You can see the temple and the house where Mayr protects Aeley and her wife Lira. You get lost in this world and forget it’s not real. The characters come alive and you get invested in all of them and want to see them all succeed and get their wants and needs met so they can flourish. I desperately hope there’s another story in this series in the future. I want to see more of the characters get happy endings.

*** Copy provided to me for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion, a review was not a requirement.***

This is book 2 in The Republic series by Archer Kay Leah, but it can be perfectly read as a standalone. Yes, it has a lot of (I suppose) recurring characters, but there was enough background information regarding all the cast so I didn't feel too confused.

Mayr is the Head of the Guard for a politician and her wife, he has great friends and family who love him dearly, he's appreciated by his subordinates for his strength and good humor, but he's never been lucky in love. When his latest ex-girlfriend asks him to accept her back, he says yes immediately, but when she proposes a threesome to try to right the wrong things in their relationship, he turns wary, but he ultimately accepts. The third in their little menage is Tash, a priest. Mayr is attracted to Tash from the moment he sees him, and the attraction seems to be reciprocated. Tash treats Mayr with care and tenderness, something he'd never encountered before. However, Tash can't commit to love Mayr, since he's preparing for the Uldana Trials to become a higher priest. What Mayr doesn't know, is that if Tash doesn't pass the four trials, the consequence will be Tash's death.

This was a fascinating read! I love fantasy books where the author is able to build a world that seems realistic enough and Archer Kay Leah does so masterfully here.

Mayr is such a fabulous character. He's strong, reliable, with a great sense of humor, but seems to gravitate towards women who won't fully appreciate him. He broke my heart several times, to the point of making me cry. Tash is his perfect counterpart, even if he made me want to strangle him a few times, and they compliment each other nicely. It was lovely to see their relationship grow, even if there was the issue of the trials looming on the horizon. They had great chemistry together and while they couldn't really give into their desires because Tash couldn't commit to Mayr, when they finally gave in, it was hot, hot, hot!

I really liked Aelyn and Lira, they were great friends to Mayr and their banter with him was hilarious!

If you like fantasy books, this is definitely a great recommendation. Well-written, fast-paced, detailed (without going overboard) and with lovable characters you can root for.

description

Four by Archer Kay Leah was a good 4 star read.

I have to say I enjoyed this read. This is Mayr’s story, he is the head of the guard. Mayr has quite the attitude and is very sarcastic. He is continuously used by women because of his status. He is looking for the one to give his heart to. When his ex lover Sarene returns Mayr ends up meeting Tash who definitely gets his attention. For the record I didn’t like Sarene. Could Tash be the one?

Tash is looking for redemption from his criminal past. He has thrown himself into helping others to make up for his past. When he meets Mayr there is an instant connection. Tash is also trying to become an Uldana Priest, this could be a problem for their future. Could they lose each other for good or will things finally work out for Mayr?

I really liked Mayr and Tash. They were both strong characters. It was great seeing Aelyn and Lire from book one. I had some LOL moments with the bantering that took place. If you looking for a good M/M fantasy romance you will like this read.

This is book two in The Republic Series, but can be read as a standalone.
This story is obviously set in the same world as book one, but a completely different couple complete with HEA.
This book centers on Mayr the Head of the Guard for a prominent family.
Mayr is lovely man, handsome, loyal, but has been very badly treated by his previous Partners.
He comes from a close nit family, all he ever wanted was someone to love and complete him.
The truth is that nothing worth having is ever easy, and all the best things in life are the result of pain. In the end, that's what makes the good things go very great,
and that's what makes it all worth the struggle.

I think that describes this beautiful love story. At its heart is about finding that one person that completes you.
Mayr meets Tash through one of his exes who he meets for a threesome.
Tash is a priest, who is getting ready to become an Uldana Priest which unfortunately will mean he will be unable to have close sexual relationship with anyone.
Even though they decide to keep everything casual, which would be okay if only both men didn’t feel this strong connection neither one expected.
I not saying anymore except it pulled on my heartstrings.
I have read this authors work before and he knows how to pull you into the different worlds he creates and spits me out after I have been put through emotional ringer.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a beautiful but heartbreaking love story set in a fantasy setting.

Okay, so I admit I have not read the first book, so some parts at the beggining were kinda confusing for me. So many characters! So many names!
But this book. This freaking book. It made me cry so much, it made me feel thing in my soul and I legit wept in the train. (don't read this book in public if you don't want to be seen crying by other people)

Okay, so main hero is Mayr, captain of a guard, whose love life is pretty much horrible. All women leave him, no matter how hard he tries to please them and care for them. His latest (ex)girlfriend Sarene offers him a deal - they could get together, but only if he will take part in a threesome with her and another guy. Mayr feels really uncomfortable about that, but in the end, says yes, just so he can get her back. The other man Sarene invited is Tash, who is also a priest.
And to Mayr's surprise, he enjoys the night not despite of Tash, but because of him. He starts to long for something more with Tash, feeling something he has never felt before...

This book is a story about people who had pretty bad luck in their lives, lot of heartbreak and pain. Also about bad deeds they have done in their past and how much they try to atone for them.
It will rip out the heart of your body... but in the end, the ending is happy and that's what matters.

Also there is a possum.

This was the first book I'd read by this author and I was really impressed. The blurb was enough to really make me excited for the read, with the romance and fantasy cross and the description of the events taking place. I was even more drawn in when I got started and the level of detail and personalisation the author had put into the story was fantastic.

I really liked the flow of the story, as it didn't feel at all rushed, but it was also not overly detailed. It just flowed by as one would expect these interactions to go, if it were everyday life. I liked that, as it made it very easy to become connected with and very invested in the book.

Overall, I really liked the story and found the characters great to get to know. I felt bad for them, but also wondered how they had gotten themselves into some of the situations they had, with regards to their love lives. I liked that though, as it made it exciting and fun to see where the story took them.

We're back with book #2 in this series and I liked it. There’s just something about the main character that was so endearing and you couldn't help root for him in hope he got everything he wished for.

Mayr seems to have it together. He's head of the guard, best friends with the leader, and just an all around guy. But when it comes to love, he can't seem to win. Everyone seems to leave him after a short amount of time and it is wearing on the seemingly confident man. What people don't know is, he isn't confident at all. And the latest in break-ups has left him feeling lower than low. So when she comes back suggesting a threesome to make things better, he goes against his better judgement just to make her happy. What he doesn't expect, is the man she brings takes Mayr’s breath away. Tash is beauty incarnate and Mayr can't drink enough of him in. Things seem to progress between the two of them, but the priest trials start for Tash and put a severe strain on their budding relationship. Tash feels he has to do these for redemption of his past, but they are tearing Tash and Mayr apart. They have to decide what's more important in life and if they can move past the pain and hurts.

Mayr has my heart in this one. He feels so worthless and full of guilt over the past. He feels like he's not good enough for anyone and it gets worse every time he's dumped. He tries so hard to be confident and happy and there for everyone, but he's just miserable. When his ex suggested the threesome, he really didn't want to do it. Just another way for him to feel inadequate. And his ex remained that. His ex. The three-way wasn't good enough for her. What's worse is he finally felt something come to life for him with Tash, and he knows it will turn out to be casual. Tash’s trials alone will make sure of that. But Mayr can't stop his heart and it's breaking all over again because of it. I just want poor Mayr to catch a break. He just wants love. So much. He just doesn't realize Tash is as crazy for him. And then I feel for Tash because he feels like he has to do these trials as a priest to make up for all he's done wrong in his life. He needs redemption. He needs peace. He needs to know he's forgiven. But how does he choose between this and love? How does he choose between his other half of his soul and making things right? (Right in the heart….just pulls right at the heart.) These two have a lot they have to decide. They have to deal with the past, the hurts, and every drop of guilt. And then they have to decide if all of that is worth more than the love they have. They have a long road ahead.

Life is trying. It pulls and pulls at us until it seems like there is nothing left. And when something comes along to make it better, life tries to take it as well. But we have to decide what's worth fighting for. And who. And hopefully in the end, we make the right choice.

Before I start...you lot know I'm a sucker for a good cover and this one ticks so many boxes for me!!

I really enjoyed this book. Having not read the first one I thought it might be difficult to follow but it actually wasn't too bad. There was the odd moment where I thought, hang on, where did that come from but on the whole it's a doable read on it's own.

It is however definitely a linear series and I feel the story would have more depth and the world-building would be better if you had read book one.

But anyway that's my problem not yours as it was my choice not to read the first one and I don't want to detract too much attention from the book as it stands because it is a really well written story!

Its a gay romance written in the third person whose name is Mayr. He's desperately seeking love and finds it in the place he didn't expect it with Tash. I love how the story wove it's way around them both trying to resist what they felt and although some parts made me cringe a little (think Mills & Boon Cheese) overall I think the author did a great job in bringing this story alive!

I especially think the way she wrote the sex scenes was spot on! She managed to make them real but not too hardcore which I think matched the tone of the story perfectly!

Overall I found this book to be well written and on point! I would recommend the series so you can follow it throughout but you can give it a bash on it's own without losing too much of the story

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
It looks like Mayr has it all, a great career, people who love him and beautiful women want him but looks can be deceiving. He can't seem to keep from getting his heart broken time and time again. When his latest ex comes back suggesting they have a threesome with a man named Tash, Mayr agrees.
Tash is nothing like Mayr has ever known and he falls for him hard, Now Tash is facing the Uldana trials and either way win or lose Mayr will lose him.
Now what is Mayr to do about his feelings for Tash? Will he lose again or will the Goddess finally smile down on him and let him find true love? This is a pretty hot M/M romance without being raunchy. If you loved Mayr in book one you'll have even more to love in this book all about him and his search for love.

This is the 2nd book in this series and picks up after that. Mayr is in the first story but you find out more about him in this one. This was a good story and keeps you entertained as the story moves forward. While also continued story line of the other characters from the first story. I liked how the story ended it was the perfect end.

Today I bring you a review for the second book in The Republic series. Technically all of the books can be read as stand-alone but I read this one and the first book because I got the third book from netgalley and wanted to read all of them. I unfortunately didn’t like the third book at all and ended up giving up on it. On the DNF shelf it goes…

This book was definitely the best of the three. In terms of writing, characters, and plot, it’s not the most phenomenal but it’s a fun read. And I have to say, all elements of this book were better done than in the previous book. Yeah, the plot was predictable, but not as ridiculously predictable as the first book. The insta-love was definitely present in this book as much as the first, but the actual relationship took a while to build up in this one. The good and the bad of the relationship was more realistic as well.

Four reads a lot like stereotypical fanfiction, with original characters, of course. A predictable plot, the appropriate amount of fluff and angst, character tropes. I’m partial to badass broody guys who are secret softies, so the tropes worked for me. I really liked Mayr, but Tash got on my nerves a bit. I don’t think I like martyr characters or maybe Tash’s self-sacrificing was just excessive. He was hurting people more than helping. I just wanted him to accept Mayr’s help and love!

Both Tash and Mayr had so much self-hatred. It popped up literally every few paragraphs, which was obnoxious but I guess understandable.

I liked both Tash and Mayr’s families. They were all nice and funny and good for the boys. For the most part, I liked the characters in this book, but I found the girl that introduced Tash and Mayr to be a very annoying stereotype. I also thought Tash’s hometown was unnecessarily cruel.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the expansion of the religion and culture. I wanted more information about both in the first book, and this book delivered. There was more of the Council (who are harsh and intense) and way more depth to the religion. I really loved that by the end of the book, sex and love were seen as not only natural and pure, but even a form of religious devotion (Take Me to Church by Hozier, anyone?).

This was much better than the first book and despite being something I wouldn’t normally read, I enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars!
This is the second book to A Question of Counsel.
Now in this one we learn more about Aeley's head guard and best friend Mayr.
This book is a little bit longer, but it's wonderful and you want more of this story. Mayr who tries to hide his personal life from everyone and act like he has everything together.
We realize that he is still great, and more on his guilt with his family.
Mayr who goes through women like nothing, would love to settle down with the right girl. And when Mayr gets a second with an ex-girlfriend Sarene he can't believe his luck.
But when Sarene suggests bringing another person into the bedroom with them, Mayr isn't sure what to do.
In comes Tash who makes Mayr rethink everything about his life and the women he has been with.
But hiding his feelings for Tash isn't easy, and learning about his past and future are even harder to trust.
Mayr trying to confront his past and come to terms with his choices he has made and learning to trust again may come back to ruin his relationship.
Tash having feelings for Mayr but with his awful past that he is runing from catches up to him. And taking trials to become a Uldana could mess up his future with the one person he has allowed himself to love and trust. Can
Mayr and Tash get past everything and risk won't they know to become more than casual?

This (Four) was Mayr’s book, which I was excited for as I loved him in A Question of Counsel. I loved Tash (aka Halataldris – still trying to figure out how the author got Tash from that mouthful, but it’s probably the same as getting Dick from Richard). He (Tash) was a good love interest and he and Mayr balanced each other out.

Something that annoys me when I read a fantasy romance book is that the pacing and flow of the story is nearly always sped up due to the romance aspect, and when you speed up the pacing and flow of a fantasy book, the plot tends to unravel and even move away from what the original plot was meant to be. This did not happen in Four. The romance and fantasy worked together to ensure that neither plot nor romance was lost.

I loved this book and will definitely read it again in the future, or even manage a series reread when the fourth book comes out (I saw it on Netgalley and am itching to request it).

I didn’t read book one, but this story can be read as a standalone so it didn’t really bug me.

I really enjoyed this book and how easy it was to feel connected to the characters and everything. It had a very nice flow to it and didn’t feel rushed or boring at all. Mayr and Tash are great, strong characters and it was sometimes painful to read about their struggles.

Archer Kay Leah did an amazing job with this story and I very much look forward to reading more in the future!

From Magnolia Reviews: Four Petals

I enjoyed reading this book. It was very well-written and hard to put down, and the romance was perfect. I do wish there was a secondary plot for more of the book and that the world-building had a broader focus, but that didn't detract from what I liked about this story. I do recommend it.

An M/M romance.... that's packed with adventure, excitement and romance. I'm not sure if this takes place in the renaissance period, but it did take me a bit to get into the book. The characters where written wonderfully with nicely thought out plots and carefully planted twists and turns with a HEA. A wonderful book that I would recommend for mature reading ONLY!
Happy reading.

I received this copy from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Let's go :D

The Review

Let’s start with a small rant. Four is the second book in the series and I should have listened to that. Despite being mildly interested in book one, I decided book two sounded way more promising and I went straight for it. The result was A LOT of confusion on my part, regarding the world I had been tossed into and the relationship level between characters. For N reasons, I believed this was a companion series – standalones that connect each other with the barest of links, but not to the point of making a linear reading necessary. For those of you that got the same impression, don’t fall for this: The Republic is a linear series and you need to read book one to know what’s happening in book two!! Just changing the protagonists doesn’t turn a book into a standalone. #justsaying

Now that this is off our way, for the good parts: I enjoyed Four. It was a very unique book, beautifully written, with relatable and sexy characters. However, the world building could have used more attention and detail, especially in the beginning of the book. Even if I had read the first book in the series, it’s always good to remind the reader where we are, as we usually read a ton of books in the breaks of waiting for the next volume of the series. Also, the pace was so slow! I suffer from reader’s anxiety: when the book starts to get nowhere after a X number of pages/chapters (varies from a book to another), I get impatient, grumpy and desperate for relevant events on the story. It sucks hard, because then you can’t enjoy all the little good things along the plot and it was precisely the case with Four =(

I’m a sucker for gay romance, tattooed guys and informal romantic relationships that get out of hands on my books, so Four made it to three stars: an enjoyable ride that had tons of potential to be the best of my life and it wasn’t.

The narrative is third person from Mayr’s point of view and, while this is my favorite style, I found it hard to connect with Mayr and be sympathetic to his causes. Unfortunately, there were too many personality incoherencies and gaps for me to truly see him as a real person inside the pages. A quick and simple example of what I mean: Mayr has a depressive and serious personality, thanks to many events of his life, which is totally okay. The problem is that, at the same time, the author wanted us to see him as outgoing and funny on the outside: sometimes, during dialogues, I felt like Mayr was watching someone else talking to the people next to him, because the gap wasn’t only too great between his outside self and his true self, it was also unjustified through the book.

The plot was truly great! I loved how a one-night-stand between Mayr and Tash evolved to so much more with both men trying very hard to avoid it, so I found myself chuckling alone in many occasions when they admitted they were stalking each other and still denied their feelings <3 It was sooo cute!! *--* Also, the twists in the back story were fun to watch!

I already ended up talking a little about the characters, so I’ll just wrap this part with compliments, haha! OMG, Tash is handsome! I kept picturing a rogue biker in priest clothing, to be honest, and OMG!!!!

My only wish for this book was for more believable character interactions, as there were many times in which I blinked twice in face of the events I was witnessing. The story got so romanced that bordered a bad side of cheesy and it totally didn’t need to be! I mean, seriously, look at that blurb! THE POTENTIAL, PEOPLE!!!

One thing that truly got my attention was the way that Leah wrote the sex scenes. I don’t know how, but the author managed to mix explicit and non-explicit content in them, so you know exactly what is happening and, yet, the reader is left to imagine on their own about the details. It was an ingenious technique that I admired heavily <3 I still prefer my sex scenes explicit and vulgarity-free, but this worked too?

I LOVED THIS COVER <3 It’s the kind that gets more perfect when you read the book – the feathers scattered, the blue lonely background, the font and shadows used to compose the title and the white in the author name and series title IS JUST PERFECTION! Seriously, I’d die for a paperback of this volume on my shelves, haha!

Overall, if you like fantasy, gay books, sexy guys and a heart-warming romance, Four is the book for you ;D Considering that you’ll be a good reader and read book one first, of course!

Thanks so much for reading and thanks again to Xpresso Book Tours for my review copy <3

If you are the kind of person that need to have information and no holes in your knowledge. I heavily advise that you read book one, A Question of Counsel, of this series. I love to have all the pieces to my puzzle before me. Or I could just get more confused. So after reading approximately three chapters, I put Four down and sought out A Question of Counsel. There I got answers, details, insight. Once finished I was able to proceed forward with a brighter view of what I was reading. Then heading back to the beginning of Four. I started it all over again and this time I read with understanding. I have to say that by the end of A Question of Counsel, I very much wanted more of Mayr.

Now, Mayr has center stage. It was not easy. He has had life handed to him hard and fast. He wants what most want out of life someone to love, to care, to stay and return his love. That chance has presented itself after yet another lover leaves him. But this time his new lover may have no choice in the matter. I found this one more intriguing and with a bit more depth than book one. I got a bit more of the world around Mayr. The life that he was leading. Things just was more. Tash was interesting, determined, and a challenge.

This read catered more to Mayr and how things were around him. I enjoyed the direction things were heading, but the pace was a bit slow for me. I was desiring a more uptempo pace. The sex scenes were intense, but not offensive. The flashes of Tash was rough, tough, but complaint. I know odd paring. I found him to be the one hot, sexy, desirable, but at the same time something about him was a bit off limits.

I was able to only keep up and follow through on things because I took the time to go back and read book one. There were areas for improvement, ie. character depth, interaction, plot line depth (felt a bit superficial), world development should have grown more since the first book. I enjoye this mm romance. It was soft.

Four is the second book in the author’s The Republic Series and it focuses on Mayr and his inability to maintain a long term relationship. Until he is introduced to Tash. Having read the first book in this series, I knew what to expect from the author. Unlike the first book, little detail was paid to the surrounding suspense and drama going on within the Kingdom. Mayr is the head of the guard and his partners always leave him. He is excited when his former girlfriend introduces him to Tash, asking him to participate in a night of passion between the three. While Mayr is initially excited to get back together with his ex, he eventually realizes it is not she who he has feelings for, but Tash. A man. A man of god.

I found the story well done. Mayr was a character that intrigued me in the first book, so I’m glad the author wrote this story about him. He and Tash were the sole focus within the story, with glimpses of previous characters from the first book of the series (YAY!). Their relationship, feelings, and attraction were well written and kept me interested in the story. The angst and conflict (the Uldana Trials) helped to keep me intrigued and wanting their pairing to continue. However, I do wish more was done to keep building the series. I’m not as anxious to read the next book as I was for this one.

Overall, this is a good book with a well written story.

This book starts REALLY slow. Just as I was thinking how much I wanted this to be over, it sucked me in. The story ended up being incredible. Now I have to go find others by this author.
