Deadpool: Back in Black

During 1984's Secret Wars, Deadpool was introduced to an alien symbiote who went on to become Spider-Man's black costume and, eventually, Venom.

OK, OK, maybe that really happened in Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars. Point is, did you know that after Spider-Man rejected the costume... it went slinking back to Deadpool on the rebound? And they went on adventures together? You didn't? Well, you will, now, thanks to this series by Cullen Bunn (Deadpool Killogy) & Salva Espin (Deadpool & The Mercs for Money)!

I read it sitting in my bathroom. Yes, I'm not ashamed to admit it :p Some of my most thoughtful and in-depth reads happened/continues to happen in my bathroom. But this is not one of those reads, obviously. And let's face it, no one (in their right minds at least) reads a whacky over-the-top Deadpool adventure for thought-provoking or in-depth analysis. We read it for laugh out loud hilarious gags and ridiculous yet awesomely entertaining action-adventures mixed with memorable funny Deadpool dialogs-monologues. Alas, this one didn't contain much of any of those. It had some funny bits of Deadpool monologues and interactions with other classic characters like Black Cat or Kraven the Hunter, but that's about it. The story started to lose its momentum in the very first issue and the main gag of the plot (in the eighties, Deadpool merged with that infamous Alien Symbiote for a brief period after Spidey and before Venom) didn't hold much attention for very long either. Felt like pulling its elasticity way more than was needed. The whole plot had a very scattered disjointed feel that didn't really connected over all. I liked Deadpool's hilarious girlfriend-like relationship with the Symbiote, and Cullen Bunn's attempt at humanizing the Symbiote, giving it a welcoming depth. But in the end, the book was just not very funny and not even a slightly bit memorable, two of the biggest negative points for a Deadpool story to me. 2.5 out of 5.

Actually a lot of fun. In the 80's, Deadpool apparently wore Spiderman's symbiote costume between when Spiderman rejected it and it bonded with Eddie Brock.

The Good: Deadpool gets involved between the pages with all the big Spidey stories of the day, Black Cat, Kraven's Last Hunt, etc. It's the best Deadpool work I've seen from Cullen Bunn.

The Bad: That symbiote version of Deadpool's costume is hideous.

The Ugly: I feel like we are getting dangerously close to Deadpool over-saturation.

This was a bit of a mess and rarely told a coherent storyline. I've read a few Deadpool books, and I must say most of them are either too safe or not a great indicator of where the film found its material. Back in Black falls into my common issue with Marvel comic stories. Marvel tends to introduce core characters for no real substance, only for the fanboys. It's nice a character can drop in at any time, but I tend to like a real reason.

Why the 2?

Cullen Bunn attempts to create a story with the Venom substance and the Deadpool character. I hate not liking a book, but this wasn't a great storyline. This honestly felt like a rushed book to meet a deadline. I honestly couldn't see who in the mind would've shelled out money for the monthly, or weekly issues. The Deadpool character is still worth checking out here, but it wasn't my thing and it referenced too many other stories. Others might like this book, but not me.

I thought Deadpool was funny. Everything is too cartoony and PG13 to be entertaining. I expected to see more sword-play and humor, but got a big, boring nothing instead with everything that makes Deadpool cool replaced by Spider-Man references. The story has Deadpool meet several of Spider-Man's allies and enemies with them thinking he is Spider-Man. The encounters leave a great deal to be desired. I have to agree with Black Cat who nails it on the head when she says: 'your witty banter game is really off right now.' I should have gotten the point and left this story unfinished. I barely cracked a smile while reading it. Deadpool himself says a bit later on: 'bonding with a gooey alien really ought to be more fun.' It's not...

I love Deadpool as much as the next guy, but I muss admit that I'm getting quite saturated with the character. I always enjoyed his comics but since the success of the Deadpool movie, Wade is EVERYWHERE: his own series, derivate series like the Mercs for money, Avengers, miniseries, limited series like this one: retro continuity stories where the character is forced in the story before his own conception, guess starring, team-ups, etc....
In my opinion it is already a bit too much, specially keeping in mind the variable level of quality that some of these limited series offers.
This one is one of the worst ones I have read (or maybe is saturation, who knows) being completely unnecessary to alter the original Spider-Man saga in order to have it bond with Deadpool before finding Eddie Brock and adding a lot of information that in the best case is unnecessary while in the worst case is plainly stupid.

The best thing of this series is the art by Salva Espín, and it is nothing out of the ordinary either.

The second part of my Deadpool birthday swag, Back in Black is set between the moment that the alien symbiote, Venom, abandoned his Spidey-host and before he latched on to Eddie Brock, and spent a while driving Deadpool’s body around instead.

To be completely honest, I don’t really know much about the character of Venom besides what I saw in Spidey 3 where it turned Peter Parker into an even bigger douche than Tobey Maguire is in real life. But while Venom doesn’t succeed in turning Deadpool into that big of a douchebag, it does make for a more subdued outing than I’m used to. Far less time is spent cracking wise, far more time is spent thinking about murdering Spidey, and the constant call-outs scattered throughout, telling us where and how we can find out more about the people and adventures referenced in Venompool’s adventure, made for a more distracting than usual read for me (the call-outs also didn’t really do their intended job on me – I’m not interested in picking up any of the many various editions referenced here). Deadpool does look pretty sweet all Venom’ed up though, so that’s a nice silver lining.

I can’t say that this has really inspired into spending more time with Venom in graphic novel format (although, thanks to the casting of Tom Hardy, I most certainly will be up for spending some time with him in movie format) and I didn’t enjoy Back in Black quite as much as my previous outings, but it’s still a nice diversion for an hour or so.

The comic as a whole started really well, not saying ending was crap but overall it was a really good start that had a little bit less towards the end. Deadpool kept his witty style of handling things with really cheesy ending. It was a nice read and the comments were a bit onesided but hey thats Deadpool. It seemed that the surrounding cast didn't had smart dialogs and most of them were reserved for Deadpool.

The relationship between Deadpool and Venom was kinda cute and fun to watch, plus the best part of everything in these booklet was those bunnies. Poor little virus induced bunnies.

This was a fun relaxing read and would recomend it to anyone.

As for art style I really liked it how it was done, the scenes were adding nicely and there was nothing confusing that couldn't be able to follow. I really enjoyed the part where he was high from the dart, the colours and everything fit in so nicely and really add a certain tone to whole chapter. I loved every page how it was designed.

A parody 80's Marvel comics that misses out on some great possibilities. The biggest of which is the artwork. Why didn't the artwork mock 80's cliches? Pick up any 80's Marvel comic and the first thing you'll notice is each page looks like the colorist walked away with every page only half colored. 80's Marvel comics always had great swathes of uncolored areas, plainly and oddly left uncolored white. Also, the color palette of each page was very limited to just a few colors. As if the printer was charging extra for each color and Editorial limited each book to a very limited palette to save pennies. It's a weird distinctive look, very different from 60's, 70's or 90's Marvel books.

So why didn't Deadpool: Back in Black mock 80's art? It looks like very other current Marvel title. That's just one of several broad missed chances this book fails on.

BEST. COVERS. EVER.

Other than that, the artwork is great.

The story sucks. Boring. Not funny at all. Not interesting. Basically let's make some quick $$ from yet another Deadpool mini series and the dumb fucks will buy that shit (I'm the dumb fuck, yes).

Never give Cullen Bunn to write Deadpool ever again. (even though I read Deadpool Assassin recently and it was decent enough, but this is me showing how much I hated this one).

But yeah, I love Cullen, I love everything I purchased and double purchased from him (digital AND print) (ie. Harrow County,, Sixth Gun etc.) but... when it comes to superheroes, no. Just no. (except Magneto) everything else I read I didn't like and now Deadpool Back in Black is back to remind me why I didn't like anything else superhero-y from him.

Anyway.... I wouldn't recommend it.

I was really looking forward to this as I love Deadpool and Venom, he was awesome as a venom in venomverse. This was just what if he was Spider-Man, which is a real disappointment. They use the same gag throughout the whole thing, it wasn't funny the first time and it wasn't the tenth time.

It took a while to actually get into the story as well, it decided that it wanted to have a team up with some kids from the power pack. They had a messed up clown in it who was kind of vile, plus other things. I'm not sure why that was in there, Power Pack aren't doing any titles at that time so it's not to push there title so it's just weird.

This is also retcon galore, I get that Deadpool's Secret Secret WarsDeadpool's Secret Secret Wars retconned a few things but that was more of a wink wink nudge nudge thing. This was more lets just throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.

The villains in this were pretty good, I don't mean the main one, no they sucked. I mean the others that just cameoed. Also the latter half of this was pretty entertaining but the majority of it was hard to read. I think that's because the later bits it's a little more Venom like then trying to be Spider-Man.

Just okay.

I was expecting more of a Spidey/Deadpool team-up but it seems like what I really got was what if Deadpool was Spidey in the 80's...? Except there wasn't a nice strong 80's vibe. It was nothing at all like the throwback/time travelling fun of DEADPOOL (1997) 11 where Deadpool travels back to the 1960's - Spider-Man/Deadpool Vol. 0: Don't Call It A Team-Up

This felt like an unnecessary transplant/what if instead of a genuine Deadpool story.

Deadpool comics often feel like isolated diversions that avoid the main continuity and try to just come up with strange stories here and there. These stories rarely work with the main continuity (like the repeated times Deadpool has been drafted to kill all of the Marvel universe) and thus focus on absurdity and strangeness.

This one was a bit more clever than most given its efforts to insert itself into the existing continuity while still respecting what originally happened. And this one really played things pretty close given the decision to tell an entire story between the point when Peter Parker finally rids himself of the symbiote costume and when Eddie Brock later encounters it and becomes Venom. And to be even cheekier, they throw in a title that echoes a Spider-Man story that had Peter donning the black costume once again but under very different circumstances.

As light as this book was it was still a lot of fun and made good use of the Spider-Man timeline with the usual brand of modern Deadpool humor. But oddly minimal fourth wall breaking.

La lecture précédente m'a donné envie d'enchainer sur un autre Deadpool...

"Maman il y a un Monsieur tout nu dans l'église" (un gamin à propos de Spider man venant de perdre son symbiote) "oh non pas encore" (la mère).

Invasion extra terrestre in coming !!

I haven't read any "Deadpool" before, so I can't speak to how this compares with other Deadpool writing, so I can't speak to that. But since someone gave me this as a gift, I thought I'd give it a shot!

In my opinion, this collection was an okay short story featuring Deadpool, the Venom symbiote, and various others. It starts when Spider-man, using a church bell, is able to force the symbiote to leave. What happens next is that it finds Deadpool, who is unaware that there is an alien hit squad also tracking it. Deadpool doesn't seem to really realize what the symbiote is, but goes on various adventures trying to be more like Spider-man (I wasn't sure if this was due to the influence of the symbiote's experience with Spider-man) but each story is pretty self-contained. It wasn't super exciting, but at least it wasn't crude (except a few innuendo.) Mildly entertaining, and drawn well enough, I feel like it wasn't anything to write home about, but it also was an acceptable romp.

5th choice book q4

I loved this comic. not only does it have deadpool in it but it also have venom. These two people are my favorite characters in the marvel universe. The conflict between the symbiote and deadpool is interesting. It also explains why Spiderman didn't like the symbiote and forced it to go away. I liked the reference to deadpool kills the marvel universe. Venom gives a pro tip to kraven the hunter "next time... try a gun." The reference is to what deadpool said to spiderman in deadpool kills the marvel universe saying "you know all those top tier villains you bragged about? they should've tried a gun." This entire comic was great. the references, the jokes, everything. I like how deadpool has DP on his outfit. Practically everything in this book is good. I would read this at least 100 times!

This graphic novel came through the library, and my only thought: "Deadpool and Venom together? How can I not give this a try?" I thoroughly enjoyed "Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars" (mostly because it pointed out how completely ridiculous the actual story is), and since this was sort of a sequel to that, I figured I would enjoy this, too. And, yes, this was solid enough, and delivered pretty much what I expected, but it wasn't great. Even though I got a few chuckles, I've definitely read funnier Deadpool stories. It was a little more... gruesome in some places than I like, but that is sometimes a risk with Deadpool. Over all, worth a look if you're interested, but not exactly one that has to be added to a must-read list.

This is a readable story, set in the 1980s, but illustrated in a modern style, unlike some of the retro stories we see in the regular series.

The premise is that the alien symbiote that fled from Peter Parker had a few adventures before Eddie Brock met it. These are those adventures, in which Deadpool gets to team-up with some 1980s characters, such as Power Pack, Obnoxio the clown, and the Black Cat (who mistakes him for Spider-Man, as does Kraven the Hunter).

There are also alien bounty hunters hunting the symbiote (as well as aliens hunting for Power Pack), a reasonable amount of 1980s continuity, and plenty of jokes.

This is nowhere near as bad as many Deadpool mini-series, and, while not as good as the main series, was a surprisingly enjoyable read.

This comic starts with a damn good throwback to the time Peter Parker was trying to get rid of his crazy black symbiote suit at the church with the loud bell gonging above him. If you haven't followed Spider-man comics, you might remember it from the film Spider-Man 3, where the boring Toby Maguire finally gets a little fun. But after Parker rejects his evil blacksuit, it finds it way to a new host - Deadpool.

While the first half of the comic was fun, the rest of it lacked the humour and wit of a typical deadpool comic. At one point it almost felt like a Spiderman comic that a Deadpool one. So it was a little disappointing.

This is a fun and kind of light retcon indicating that Deadpool had the Venom symbiote between Spider-Man and Venom. I have no idea how canonical this is meant to be, and it's just kind of a silly romp with bounty hunters and some cases of mistaken identity leading to some amusing hijinks, and the usual sort of Deadpool banter. It isn't ground-breaking, but was fairly solid comics with sort of a What If...? vibe. There were lots of hints at other adventures that I don't think have every been published, and I expect it to never really show up anywhere else, but as a standalone story that doesn't affect anything else, it's solid comics.

a funny sidetrack down tangent story based on a revisionist comic book. The depth of the ideas around Deadpool storylines juxtaposed next to the ridiculous insanity of the character I think is what really attracts me to him. not great as I think the funniest joke was a dick joke about Kraven that was followed up in the footnotes. I'm all for dick jokes but they shouldn't be the highlight of the book.

So, everyone thinks writing Deadpool is easy. In truth, its much harder to be funny than most people think. Sadly, this book is more idiotic than funny. The premise is funny, but not the delivery. I loved Salva Espin's art but he didn't have a great script to work with. Overall, a funny idea becomes a lame story.

Not funny or entertaining in any way.

In the recent Secret Wars, Deadpool encountered the alien costume before Spider-Man. In this series, after it leaving Spider-Man, the symbiote bonds with Deadpool. We get Deadpool encountering some '80's Marvel characters like Power Pack. There's narration, like in an '80's comic. But there's very little personality.

I actually really enjoyed this one! The art was super cute, the no-name heroes are always fun to encounter, and the poor Symbiote gets a little humanized too. I think Symbiote-pool might be one of my favorite art iterations, with his obnoxiously cute huge eyes.

Hmmm... better art than Posehn/Duggan, refreshingly less gory and more innocent (though with plenty of innuendo -- the ladies are all over Deadpool in this one), but a so-so storyline, and not as funny.

I liked it well enough.
