He's annoying. He's dangerous. He smells terrible. But the public loves him! That's right - 25 years after the character was introduced, the Merc with a Mouth is now an Avenger and the most popular hero in the world. Eat that, Spidey! But with great popularity comes overbearing responsibility, so Wade has called in a little help being him. You won't believe - or recognize - who he signed up! (Unless you've memorized the entire Official Handbook.) But when an imposter sets out to ruin Deadpool, our hero has the perfect bait to lure the baddie out: his innocent daughter, Ellie?! Plus: Jump decades into the future for an even-newer, even-different-er Deadpool 2099! And, in an entirely Spanish-language tale, meet Masacre - the Deadpool of Mexico!
So Deadpool is rich and has his own team of Deadpools, what could go wrong? Well there is an evil Deadpool, no not the one from Daniel Way’s run this is a new evil Deadpool.
There is a lot to love in this, you have Deadpool lording it over being publicly adore and filthy rich. Then you have 2099 where a new Deadpool is running around and causing havoc, I was presently surprised on how good she was. It wasn’t a situation where they are just trying to copy Wade no this one had her own flavour, look forward to seeing more of her. On top of that you have Deadpool’s wife Shiklah getting increasingly frustrated by Deadpool antics, finally you have the colourful Mercs for Money they are easily the best part of this.
Now there are a few negatives that come with this, as I mention we’ve seen evil Deadpool before and honestly it was done a lot better. It just felt like a less interesting rehash, oh I’m you but crazier, evil and I can heal faster…. Great apart from Deadpool is already 2 of those 3 so there isn’t much point in having a villain mirror him. I don’t know why superhero comics seem so intent on making a mirror of the hero it just seems kind of pointless granted some work but mostly they’re miss fires. Plus the reveal isn’t anything to blow your horn about it’s mentioned very early on, you’d have to be an idiot to miss it. So now Deadpool is rich and famous he’s opted to become a PG version of himself, he goes after someone without any guns. Why on earth would you do that, it doesn’t make any sense what so ever that’s his MO.
You also get a bunch of issues towards the back that explain how each Merc came to work for Deadpool, the best was Foolkiller because it opted not to solely focus on why and was more interested in telling its own story. You also have 2 Spanish issues in this, I’m not sure why as everything else is in English, I get the Massacre is Spanish and that’s his thing but I’m just baffled as to why they kept it in Spanish instead of translating it. I’’ve even read his origin in English pretty sure it was collected in one of the Mercs for Money trades.
I simply found it incredibly hard to follow, what with the enormous amount of characters and very short scenes (a page to 2 pages on average before the setting and characters changed again).
