America’s Dog

Dana Perino, former press, secretary for George W. Bush and current commentator for Fox News Channel has a canine mental health aide.

Dana tells the story of how she and her husband fell in love with dogs, and the dogs with them. I saw Dana in news clips, and although she seemed nice, we have no idea how sensitive this person really is until you hear her speaking of her private life.

I enjoyed the story of her life with her dogs, it was a cozy story. Five stars worth of canine love.

This book was one all dog lovers can relate to. Dana gives a glimpse into her life with the dogs she has loved and how they have improved her life. Her chapter entitled "Dog Interruptus" brought to mind the impact a new puppy had in our bed as he grew to be 100+ pounds. The many photoshopped picture of Jasper included were a fun addition to the book. I have been a fan of Dana's from watching her on Fox and enjoyed learning more about her life off-camera.

One of the best books I've read so far this year! If you are a dog lover, you will LOVE this book!

I loved Dana's previous book, and this one is even better because the two Viszlas, Henry and Jasper, that she and her British husband, Peter, have owned together are the stars of the story. I had a lump in my throat when I read about Henry's death. I snickered at the photoshopped pictures of Jasper at the end of the book. I sympathized with Dana, because as a dog mom, she worries about Jasper when she's away and wants to know how his day was. It is just a fun, fun book to read.

I bought this book back in 2016 when it was published, but never read it. Well, Jasper died earlier this year so I wanted to read it and finally did. I teared up so many times when her previous dogs died and every dog owner knows that the years are numbered.

"At speeches, the first question I got was usually about Jasper, and I started to realize that it was my pet that was helping me connect with people in ways that weren't partisan or political."

5 stars for America’s dog! 🇺🇸

Cute, light-hearted book about Dana’s love for dogs especially Jasper. Favorite part had to be “A Day in the Life of Jasper.”

I only read this book because it was one of the few books in my house I had yet to read & I love dogs. Well, this book was NOT worth my time reading. Half the book is photoshopped photos of the dog. The first half of the book that includes words is written in such simple terms that a 4th grader could read this book with ease. This book is just a woman bragging about her perfect dogs. Don't waste $27 full price on this book unless you don't mind spending $27 to see photoshopped dog photos & reading about someone's "perfect dog". "America's dog"? I read the book & still don't see how Jasper is "America's Dog".

Let Me Tell You About Jasper by Dana Perino who works for the Fox News Network is a fun read. Dana is one smart lady and loves talking about her dog, Jasper! When I found out she wrote a book about her dog, I had to get it! I enjoyed this book very much. I not only learned about Jasper, but also about her and her previous dog, Henry. Her writing is very good. I also liked Jasper's account of his day. This is a short book with lots of pictures. I give it 5 stars because it is very well done!
(Gerard's Review)

Let Me Tell You About Jasper by Dana Perino, is a heartwarming book about her two Vizsla dogs. She explains how she and her husband met, how they got the dogs and some funny things their dogs did. Jasper is still alive, but their first dog, Henry, has passed on to doggie heaven. When reading this it made me feel happy that her dogs were/are so loved. It's not gripping, but if you're looking for a cozy book, this is it. It is very short because the second half of the book is all pictures! My favorite parts were actually written by her husband. I liked it all right so gave it 3 stars because I've read other dog books that I liked much more. (Karen's review, 3 stars)

I have three dogs so it was fun to read of Dana's love and obsession of Henry and Jasper. Dogs do become our furry children. The pictures are great. The Visula is a beautiful animal.

I've read several other books with dogs as the star and unfortunately have to say this book was unremarkable. Anyone who owns a dog could tell a similar tale.

I did like the pictures at the end of the book and glad I borrowed the e-book from my library on my tablet rather than my Kindle Paperwhite so I could see the pictures in color.

My original intent was to give the book 3 stars but an event towards the end of the book bothered me and frankly I'm surprised Dana included it in the book. Her husband Peter brought Jasper to the Post Office but was told by a worker that dogs were not allowed. He told them that Jasper was a therapy dog. Individuals who actually need service/therapy dogs would not be happy with this. I wish one of my friends who has a service dog could meet face to face with the couple to explain this to them.

Fox News commentator and former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino tells us about how she met her husband, about their first dog (a Vizla named Henry), his death, and their new pup Jasper. Besides these brief reminiscences, a large part of the book is full of the Cleverest, CUTEST-ever photoshopped pictures of Jasper.

So to be quite honest, I didn't actually READ this book, I just looked at the pictures. I just found humor, side-splitting humor, in the huge chunk of Jasper photo-shopped images in the back portion of the book. Utterly cute and hilarious.

There's nothing in the world that can win your heart and soul like a dog. Jasper reminds me of my two girls that I loved and lost after 15 years. There is nothing we won't do for them. Excellent book

I like books about dogs, I like Viszla's. I don't think it was necessary to put in little snippets about how much the dog's owner doesn't like Democratic politicians in a book about a dog.

This was a cute and fun read. I would only recommend it if you love dogs. Although, truth be told, there are far better dog books out there, such as Dogs as I See Them and Lessons from Lucy.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

California
“California is a great place to be anything, except a taxpayer).”

Charles Krauthammer – I love the late Charles Krauthammer.
Spoken by her dog, Jasper:
“She’s always telling my dad to shush when this guy Charles Krauthammer starts talking. I guess he’s a genius, at least that’s what she says. After Charles is finished, I get to have my dinner. Meat and kibble—it always tastes so good!”

James Herriot said this also, and I agree
“Around 10 p.m. the night Henry died, my phone rang. I couldn’t imagine who was calling so late and worried it was more bad news. But it was our friend and fellow dog lover, Greta Van Susteren of Fox News. ‘Dana, I know the last thing you think you should do right now is get another puppy, but I’m telling you it’s the best way to heal your heart,’ Greta said.”

Losing a Dog
“With every dog story, there’s a joyful beginning, a wonderful, charming middle, and a tearful end.”

Love
“Remember, the love you give them you get twice as much in return.”

Marriage
“I think that having a dog early on in our marriage helped strengthen our relationship.”

Training
“Repetition is the key to good dog training. If you’re trying to get your dog to heel or to give a high five, it’s important to practice regularly and often. I’ve found that practicing three times a day is the minimum needed for a dog to learn. Some dogs catch on quickly, especially if every time they give a high five they think they’re going to receive a treat. I’ve also found that you have to give dogs a break—after five times, if the dog has the trick down, move on and then try it again a couple of hours later. If the dog doesn’t seem to be getting it after five tries, give it a rest for a while. You can revisit that trick later.”

“Hide from your dog once when they’re young and they’ll always keep you in sight. This was a tip we learned in England when we had just picked up Henry from the breeder. We read that if you wanted to make sure your dog wouldn’t run off, the best way to do that was to hide from them, giving them a scare. We tried this at a forested rest area. Henry was off his leash but safe in an enclosed space. He started sniffing around and when he wasn’t looking, Peter dashed behind a tree and waited, keeping an eye on our new puppy. Henry didn’t notice for a while, but when he looked up and couldn’t see his owner, he panicked and started dashing about. We let it go on for a few seconds, and then Peter stepped out from behind the tree. Henry ran to him and we soothed him, letting him know he was okay. But guess what? From then on we could go for a hike or a walk on the beach and he never got too far away from us. Those few moments of fear were worth it. We didn’t have to yell constantly at Henry while we were walking, and that made for more enjoyment for the rest of us. We did the same with Jasper and got the identical result.”

This is the second book I have read by Dana Perino. This is a nice change from the political slant of the first book. Dana and her dog have become famous and this was an interesting read.
Bestselling author of And the Good News Is... Dana Perino is back with stories of friends, family, and how America's love for a dog named Jasper is a place where even political opponents can find common ground.

Dana Perino is a popular and beloved host on Fox's The Five, with over two million followers on social media. While readers admire Dana for her charm, warmth, and insight, she also knows who the real star in her family is: her Vizsla, Jasper-A.K.A. America's Dog.

In this new book, Dana tells stories about life and politics-and how dogs can transcend rancor and partisanship. She also talks about how dogs bring families together -like Dana's own, from her career in Washington through her life as a TV star. In addition to all the fun and fabulous dog tales, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT JASPER... will be fully illustrated with hilarious photoshops so clever they will make you laugh out loud. I enjoyed this book, it was fun. Dana Perino tells not only about Jasper but really her entire life with dogs. She had them growing up on a ranch in Wyoming, and more recently, she has had Hungarian Vizsla’s - first Henry, and now Jasper. It’s obvious that she is a dog lover - she loves them so much wrote this book! 😁

Jasper is a dog with personality. Mrs. Perino posts about him on her social media (I follow her on Instagram), he periodically joins her on The Five on Fox News Channel, and he has his own fans and a following that’s grown to be pretty large.

While I don’t personally own a dog (unfortunately, our busy lifestyle prevents my family from being able to devote proper time to having a dog, although we all want one 😩), it’s so nice that through this book people are able to live vicariously, and share in Japser’s life. I’m thankful that Dana Perino shares Jasper so much with her (and Jasper’s) fans.

This was an enjoyable, fun, and light read which is great for this time of year. It probably deserves 3.5 stars like I gave Mrs. Perino’s first book (I’m still waiting for a 1/2 star rating system on GR!)

Definitely a book for dog lovers! Very sweet and quite a few funny stories about Dana’s off-air life with her British husband Peter and her first dog Henry and her present dog Jasper.
This is a very short, quick read that is very enjoyable, especially for we people who treat our dogs like our children which Dana definitely does! Lots of details about her private life and travels, moves, apartments and both city life and country life. ( NYC apartment and South Carolina vacation home.)
I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Dana Perino’s and also the fans of dogs and dog books. Don’t expect a “story”, but enjoy a biographical book about Dana and her dogs.
Can you tell I am a big fan of hers and any and all dog stories!
I gave the book a 4 star rating ( upgraded from 3-3.5) because it is so enjoyable with a light, positive style with lots of humorous stories to offset the serious ones.
Dog lovers and fans of Dan Perino will enjoy!

Dana lost her dog Henry and after a few months got Jasper. She is candid about her family's experience with him.

Dana's book Let Me Tell You About Jasper is heartfelt. She talks about getting Jasper and mentions that when walking in Central Park, with Jasper, more people recognized him than her. The stories are forthright. Many illustrated images are included and some are dog gone funny.

Honesty, we don't get far from home and someone asks us about our dogs. Our two males are 13 and our female will soon be 2. We in turn often ask others about their dogs too.

I believe this is because dogs become such an integral part of our lives. The memories we associate with dogs are many and sometimes dogs are the ones that comfort us most when we are going through tough times.

Jasper passed in 2021 from cancer. What I appreciate most about this book is I know more about Hungarian vizsla's and know that Jasper was loved.

Five stars for Jasper, minus one star for politics. Our family is currently on our fifth Vizsla-Jasper's breed-and in spite of their challenging nature, we love them. So just the pictures (photo shopped of course) are worth a look. Perino is dead-on in her description of the lovable knuckleheads making our current quirky rescues seem angelic. She's also a Colorado native who split her childhood between the Rocky Mountain states of Colorado and Wyoming.
Full disclosure, Perino is a Repulican, a former press secretary for George W. Bush and she's very open about her political views. So I could have done without the politics, but it's her profession so I gave her a pass. Plus, anything about Vizslas gets five stars from our family! So if you want a fun piece of fluff with some pretty amazing photo shopped images of a gorgeous dog, this one's for you!

Dana does a great job of describing how a dog truly changes the fabric of a family and opens doors to new friendships. It was interesting to hear stories of how her K9 companions also allowed bridges to be built across the political aisle while she served as press secretary for the Bush administration. While I read Dana's first book 'And the Good News Is' and I also follow her on social media, this book was not a repeat of content. It was full of fresh and funny stories. At times I laughed aloud, particularly during a segment when her husband Peter was writing his version of events. The last half of the book contains some amazing photos that a fan prepared using Jasper as the subject. Great fun, I highly recommend!

My husband and I could have written this book! If you are a dog lover, you will understand every word of this book. Our dog is much like Jasper and we treat her just like Dana and Peter treat him. I didn't realize just how dog oriented we were until I finished this book. And, I realize how weird other people think it is to be this way. Like Dana, we have no children so, our dog has become the center of our attention. We revolve around her. Jaspers stories of walking in the park, running in the water, going to the bank and even making friends through your dog all ring so true to us!

Thanks Dana, for writing such a heartfelt book straight from your heart! It's such a quick, funny, and through Henry's chapter, emotional book that all dog owners can relate to.

This was a fun and quick read.
Sorry to say I had no idea who Dana Perino was or her show. She does a good job telling stories about her dogs and her life. And YES to the critics who say most dog owners could tell all the same stories but none of us can get a book deal.. so kudos to her. My favorite story was the one about her husband getting arrested for walking the dog without a leash.. i had to read that one aloud to my husband... yes it was funny but a sad commentary on our justice system. I had never seen the photoshopped pics of Jasper but they are so incredibly funny. Her fan has quite the talent with it.. wish I knew him so he could do the same with my dogs ... LOL

I love dogs - and this one is no exception. The book is humorous and yet when she talks about her prior dog, Henry, I got choked up (because he had died). Jasper is one special doggie (of course mine are more special even though they aren't trained AT ALL).
My only drawback - Perino states that when it comes to dog lovers, there is no political divide - and that's darned true. But then she talks about the Republican convention, her work with George W., Fox news, etc. So she manages to get in politics which contradicts her no political divide stance.
Even if you're not Republican, you'll love Jasper.

I thought this book was about 100 pages too short but the pages that were there were wonderful. Anyone who loves dogs as much as Dana does has to be a really great person, in my humble opinion. The fact that she had to cut the dog information from her first book, and then made it into its own book is brilliant. The photographs are stellar, and I loved her stories about Henry and Jasper...even the sad ones because we dog owners relate to it all. "We count the years."
Plus, she's a part time lowcountry gal? Me too! Now I hope to run into her at a Lowcountry dog park. #goals.

Dana Perino was the White House press secretary for seven years under President Bush and is one of the hosts of Fox News The Five. But you won't read any political commentary here. Dana loves her dog Jasper so much that she mentions him a lot on the show and so has nicknamed him America's dog. The Jasper stories are endearing and the photo shopped pictures at the end are worth checking out. I found myself laughing out loud at several of them.
A light and fun read for anyone who loves dogs.

Totally endearing, satisfying, humorous tales of what Fox News personality Dana Perino relates of her experience meeting and spending her daily life with her wonderful one-of-a-kind Mr. Jasper! Dog (and pet) lovers everywhere will be smitten with her colorful stories of the in's and out's of dog ownership. I, for one, cannot wait until Jasper appears on The Five someday soon!
Particularly delightful book meant to be shared with friends and family across the globe! LOVED it!
