Edisto Island is a paradise where people escape from the mainstream world. Yet for newly sworn-in Edisto Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan, the trouble has just begun . . .

When a rookie officer drowns in a freak crash in the marsh, Callie’s instincts tell her it wasn’t an accident. As suspects and clues mount, Callie’s outlandish mother complicates the investigation, and Callie’s long-time friendship with Officer Mike Seabrook takes a turn toward something new—but is shadowed by the unsolved mystery of his wife’s death. Everyone’s past rises to the surface, entangling with death that cuts to the bone.

"The roar of the surf made Callie’s steps soundless, her thoughts louder. Two and a half weeks on the job, and she’d lost an officer. Edisto hadn’t sacrificed an officer in its entire history, and the first female chief had to be the one to break the record.

She sniffled. Salty breezes began to clear her sinuses, but nothing could assuage the guilt clinging to her like the muggy air.

Sarah lived. Francis died. And somebody had to be disappointed at that freakish turn of events, because she suspected it was meant to be the other way around. Crime was for people who lived across the big bridge on the mainland. But whether the natives liked it or not, the brake lines were cut on Edisto. She didn’t want to go down that path, but one of them might be a frustrated, unfulfilled killer."

C. Hope Clark was born and reared in the South, from Mississippi to South Carolina with a few stints in Alabama and Georgia. The granddaughter of a Mississippi cotton farmer, Hope holds a B.S. in Agriculture with honors from Clemson University and 25 years’ experience with the U. S. Her love of writing, however, carried her up the ranks to the ability to retire young, and she left USDA to pen her stories and freelance.

Lowcountry Bribe‘s won several awards to include finalist status of the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense sponsored by Romance Writers of America. The novel enjoyed semi-finalist status (top 100 out of 10,000) in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest. The book went on to win the Silver Falchion Award for Crime Fiction twice and the EPIC E-book Award for Best Mystery three times.

Her books cover three mystery series in the Carolina Slade Mysteries, the Edisto Island Mysteries, and the Craven County Mysteries.

Hope is married to a 30-year veteran of federal law enforcement, a Senior Special Agent, now a contract investigator. They met on a bribery investigation within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the basis for the opening scene to Lowcountry Bribe. When there is a car crash and one of Police Chief Callie Morgan’s officers is killed while helping she is convinced it is not an accident. So starts the story. It is full of surprises, drama and some funny. I think I would have enjoyed this book a little more if I had read the first two books but it was still a good and read I will read the first two books. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

Ms. Clark always constructs a plot that is full of twists. This book in the Edisto series was no different. But, she got me at the end. Did not expect her to kill off my favorite character in this series. Unlike the Carolina Slade series, I just cannot embrace the main character, Callie. She goes from one catastrophe to another and it feels like too many of the catastrophes are of her own making.

So bottom line, I read these for the puzzles, not for the protagonist. But I do read them.

The Edisto Police Department has its share of personalities, the clash of which elicits emotions ranging from humor to outrage. The Department even has their first ever female Chief of Police, Callie Jean Morgan. She’s new to the Department, but not so new to the area where she grew up. She was known in Edisto; at least, her family was known. It may be a small, beach-front community, but the political undercurrents run deep and Callie comes with a lot of history – family history as well as career history. It all makes for an interesting, indeed intriguing plot to unravel. And then one of her own dies while on duty! Was it an accident? Or, was it murder? And who, really, was the intended target? The death of a police officer from her Department, so soon after her taking on the post as Police Chief, does nothing for Callie’s opponents. It only intensifies the chaos as the powers that be in Edisto set to destroy her career. Add to the mix, an annoying reporter who seems to be everywhere Callie turns.
It’s hard to imagine such a quiet, peaceful beach community as a setting for so much intrigue, murder and mayhem. Author, C. Hope Clark, is the master of mystery and suspense. In a previous life, the author was a federal administrative investigator and her obvious talent in creating a compelling mystery and solving the crime is evident in her writing. Her complex plots, interspersed with obscure and sometimes intricately convoluted red herrings, make her stories on par with some of the best mystery writers, particularly Agatha Christie.
Clark’s main character, Callie, is the ideal of the persistent investigator herself. She sparkles with energy, compassion and a compelling sense of what’s right and wrong. Added to her complex nature, the tragedies of her past that continue to haunt her, Callie’s complicated family situation deepens her character. After all, one can’t hold a position of power, even as the police chief, without having to face a number of controversial adversaries.
This mystery is full of plots within plots that are all interconnected. Complicated by twists and turns that make the reader believe the mystery to be unsolvable, the story does reach an unsettling resolution, but a resolution nonetheless. For, what would a life in law enforcement be without the tragedies that scar the process?
A powerful and exciting mystery on many levels. Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford, award-winning author of “To Be a Duke” and “Gerlinda”.

Before I start talking about the Edisto mysteries, I have to comment that I love the first trilogy author C. Hope Clark penned, the Carolina Slade mysteries. They were excellent. One of the things that I love about Clark’s books is that they can be read in any order. There may be a reference here and there to another story, but it does not interfere with the plot at hand.

And that brings me to Echoes of Edisto where “murder came in with the tide.” It’s the third book in the series. Not sure if there will be any more, but after I go back and read Books 1 and 2, I sure hope so. I know I keep hoping there will be another Carolina Slade mystery (hint, hint Ms. Clark.)

The story opens with Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan debating about going off the wagon and having to deal with a diva celebrity visiting the island. That gives way to a 10-50 call and Callie rushes to the scene.

Unfortunately, the outcome of the car-in-the-water is given away on the book jacket. It takes away from the tension of the event. But Clark pulled me back in with the next scene and the story takes off from there.

Callie must deal with the death of her officer, the almost-death of her neighbor, her burgeoning romance with one of her officers, the mother, island politics, and the fight to stay on the wagon. I was shocked that Callie would take a drink as she did several times throughout the book’s 246 pages. It was confusing, at first, to determine the relationship between her mom and dad and her neighbor’s Sarah ad Ben.

The climax is harrowing…and shocking…which makes for a great read. I found myself gasping at the turn of events and the secrets that are uncovered. I would LOVE to tell you more, but that’s as far as I can go.

I give Echoes of Edisto 4 out of 5 stars.

Clark's latest novel grabs you from the very start and doesn't let up. What seems like a quaint ocean side getaway on the surface lurks long-buried secrets that threaten to tear apart the community and new Edisto sheriff Callie Jean Morgan's life.

Clark's writing greatly portrays the ambiance of Edisto Island and makes you feel like you're right alongside Callie as she tries to unravel many different layers surrounding the island mystery that makes the last 70 or so pages unputdownable. Bravo!

Echoes of Edisto carries me back into Callie's world on fresh ocean breezes as if I lived there myself. I found myself worrying alongside her at each turn, cheering for her when things went right, and crying when they go so wrong. Twists and turns kept me up at night and coming back for more. Superb work by C. Hope Clark. Where will Callie's adventures carry me next? I am hoping there will be more time to spend on Edisto Beach and live vicariously through Callie's adventures. I have come to like her very much!

I sent some time in the hospital recently with family, and if you have ever been in a hospital, you know the time stretches out before you forever. Thankfully, I had "Echoes of Edisto." I had read the Slade series originally, and have a soft spot for Slade. When I first "met" Callie in "Dying in Edisto", I had a hard time feeling sympathy for Callie, even liking her.

"Echoes" changed that. I fell into the hole with this story. It was so engrossing that at one point, I forgot I wasn't listening to an audiobook.

Callie was struggling with all sorts of issues; her drinking, her fear of intimacy with Seabrook, and her understandable issues with her mother. In this one, she isn't just drowning, she is struggling to find her way to the surface, in more than one way.

The survivor's guilt she deals with is palpable. She could easily get lost in it but her determination to get to the bottom of the story, keeps her moving forward. Her backslide with drinking is what can happen with recovery, so this is kept the story true to life and realistic of those trying to maintain their sobriety.

Her son's concern, loyalty, (though occasionally misguided), and support is so well written. It shows a kid who has been through major loss in his life and has come through to the other side hurting but with a maturity most won't have.

I genuinely like Seabrook. He wants what's best for Callie but isn't preachy, pushy or overbearing. He is dealing with his own loss and drive for answers, even revenge, and though he loses his way, he keeps finding his way back to Callie. His steadfast support is what you hope for in a partner for Callie.

Callie's (and Slade's) difficulties working in male dominated fields were on point. It can be a never ending battle of trying to do you job while proving your worth, getting ready to walk away while wanting to get your job done because it is what you are passionate about.

This book kept me engaged and wondering what would happen. There were no issues with offing characters, which would leave you reeling and wondering who next and what next. I read it all in one sitting. It got me through hours of waiting, keeping me positively engaged and entertained right until the end.

Published by Bell Bridge Books in 2016, this was another of Clark’s writings that I just couldn’t put down. Third in her Edisto Island series, Clark continues to develop the character of Callie Morgan to be strong, despite every reason to be weakened from the minutes of her everyday life. She does struggle with maintaining her strength, and seeks solace a bit too often from the bottom of a bottle or glass.

Giving Clark kudos for her subtle tie-in of her other book series, the Carolina Slade mysteries, with her reference point of Palmetto Road, the questions I am left with after reading Echoes of Edisto are many.

After losing again, I first wonder if Callie will ever get to experience a lifetime love? I also worry about what kind of man Callie’s son Jeb will turn out to be, especially after all he has been exposed to already.

I had a hard time accepting who was killed by the bad guy, and an equally hard time accepting who the bad guy was. But my bias on the identity of the bad guy could just arise from my predilection for the vocation. I’m a bit partial!

Learning that Miss Promise was doing much more than helping with Callie’s mother, Beverly’s, election was another surprise cropping up on the pages. The intertwining of the lives between Callie, the parents that raised her, Sarah, and Brice was something that came across like an undetected rip tide. And now that Callie’s former boss Stan has made his way to the beach, what will happen next?

Given as an advance review copy by the author, I give Echoes of Edisto 5 out of 5 stars.

Callie Jean Morgan is back, now police chief of what might seem the tranquil resort town on Edisto Island in South Carolina. But this novel opens in a way to quickly disabuse one of the idea that this is a quaint cozy novel. On a seemingly innocent drive, Callie comes across a frantic traffic accident with a car in the ocean and one of her youngest officers trying to save the woman driver. Callie and the officer both find themselves in trouble in the waves. Callie survives. The young officer doesn't.

And that is just the beginning. Callie's would-be love interest, Officer Mike Seabrook, is spending too much time chasing shadows in an attempt to find the murderer of his wife. Meanwhile, Callie's mother is again intruding into her life, this time trying to keep a deep family secret. Meanwhile a city councilman is trying to wreck Callie's career and an unethical reporter is trying to wreck Callie's mother's political career.

There is almost too much going on in this novel. But it all comes together in a spectacular action conclusion that spans three chapters.

I really enjoy Hope Clark's writing and her Edisto Beach stories. There was just a bit too much soap opera in this one for my tastes. But others will not find it that way. These are great books for a vacation read -- particularly if you're at the beach.

Buckle up your seat belt from page one, because this is a bumpy ride. Once again we’re behind the wheel with the intrepid (but beleaguered) Callie Morgan, who’s only been top cop (promoted from an officer) in her old beach town for a week or so. Heart-pounding drama takes place from the outset, and works its way through the book, with a couple of huge, surprise emotional torquings.

Plenty of political intrigue, betrayal, suspense and small-town eccentricity make for flavorful servings of prose, though I was sorry not to see any of Callie’s exchanges with the tough female Marine-turned-real-estate broker from Book 2. Edisto Beach is ripe with the usual human carnage, with some servings of goodwill to lighten the load.

Some of the exchanges between Callie and her cop sweetie were a bit melodramatic for me, in that Callie’s emotional storms seemed a shade too dark and tangled at times. Also, I really wanted Callie to get a break at the end, because she’s already been through enough. But it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe in Edisto Stranger (Book 4)? Though the blurb for that makes it sound like Trouble is Callie’s un-erasable middle name.

Buckle Up for an Exciting Ride

C. Hope Clark's third installment of The Edisto Island Mystery Series delivers a fast paced Southern Mystery again. As usual, Clark dives straight into the action and never looks back.

This book is full of action, revelations of secrets, beautiful venues, and interesting characters. Clark's descriptions put the reader right there beside the characters. Clark is very good at pacing her reveals so that there is always something to look forward to on the next page. As it nears the climax, I kept reading in breathless anticipation. I was on the edge of my seat terrified of the possibilities that awaited me. My fear built right along with Callie's.

I did "see" a few things coming, but they weren't blatantly obvious. At the same time, some of the major twists were completely unexpected and absolutely perfect without being happy. So much of this series reminds me of how real life often deals us unexpected not so happy twists and turns.

*There is one "loose end" that I wanted tied up, but it wasn't to be just yet. It is kind-of addressed late in the book, so I expect to see it in a later book.

As her fans have come to expect, Hope delivers another fast paced, entertaining, great read suitable for the beach, airplane ride or rainy day. Actually, it's so good it may keep you off the beach long enough to read it. I feel close to Callie and can relate to her juggling job responsibilities and the complex characters in her life as she makes a new life for herself and her son. Every sentence moves the story along, no wasted words here. The varied length of sentences heightens suspense and dramatic tension in the chase scenes, exactly when it should. Her transitions are masterful, disposing of elapsed time gracefully so that there is no disruption of the story. I really enjoy the Edisto stories and heartily recommend them. A total fan of Callie's, I thought the ending was satisfying. However, I wonder about the recurring theme of processing grief and loss in order to rebuild her shattered life. It may be just bordering on too heavy for Callie and the beach crew. How long, pray Hope, will she have to suffer?

I think it's safe to say I'm a die-hard fan of detective Callie Morgan and the Edisto Island Mystery series. Volume three, Echoes of Edisto, is less mystery and more Callie. Who is she? What does her future on Edisto hold for her?

But of course there is a mystery! After her neighbor crashes into the marsh resulting in the death of one of Callie's best officers and nearly killing her, Callie learns the accident was intentional. As she tries to fit together pieces of the puzzle, some pieces just don't fit. Others connect in a way that cuts Callie to the core. And then the shocking end. Just when I started thinking, "for a mystery, there isn't really any murder," I'm proven wrong. Not every story has a fairytale ending (which really made me mad, quite frankly), but that's what I like about this series. It's like reading about real people, real heroism, and real tragedy. C. Hope Clark makes her characters pop off the page, forces you to love them like your best friends.

I'm already itching to reach book four, Edisto Stranger.

Third book in the series, and it was almost too much. Callie has had a lot of horrible things happen to her, but Hope really piled it on in this book. Poor Callie never got a chance to catch her breath. And I didn't either.

I like a book with a break-neck pace, but this one needed a few more pittstops (a joke, for those who have read the book). There were so many things happening that I was confused. What tied together and was was coincidence? I feel like I missed too much in the wrap-up. I went back and read it again, to make sure I had it all straight. With different cases suddenly connecting and a very unexpected death, the end of the book left me spinning.

I plan to read the rest of the books, but I hope things slow down slightly. Give my brain a chance to process one event before the next one throws me off in another direction. And please give poor Callie a break. She's dealt with so many deaths, she doesn't have many people left in her life.

If you like fast-paced action thrillers, this is the book for you. But you probably want to read the other two first, so you understand the relationships and emotional problems in the characters.

Chief Callie is back and struggling to overcome her insecurities and demons. This is the third book in the Edisto Island Mystery Series and is a stellar read. Callie Morgan the persistent former Boston Detective who landed in Edisto Beach, SC is faced with more seemingly unsolvable cases. C. Hope Clark’s intricate storytelling pulls you into the story. Having personally visited Edisto, I love Clark’s ability to weave intimate details into her series.
I have become invested into following the ins and outs of the Edisto Police Department. The characters, major and minor, are portrayed with realistic frailties, struggles and strengths. I found this to be a faced paced mystery with majestically developed plot twists building tension to a crescendo spinning to a shocking and dramatic resolution.
I highly recommend this book and series.

What a wild ride!

I just finished reading Echoes of Edisto. I am exhausted! You can’t help but embrace these characters, and as a result you care about them like family. Callie again finds herself in mortal danger, complete with unexpected twists and turns.
Even though I knew I had an early alarm waiting for me this morning, I could not leave Callie and Edisto until I finished reading.
This morning when I woke up, my first thoughts returned to Echoes of Edisto, along with questions. Did that really happen to Callie? What’s in store for her now? And, thank goodness I’ve already got Edisto Stranger waiting in my bookshelf wings.

Once again, C. Hope Clark throws you into the wonderful world of Edisto beach life. This book held a lot of suspense and left you with a few surprises. I love those moments in books where you are wondering why something has to happen in it. Anyways, I think Clark did a wonderful job with the plot and the characters. I felt like this book was a faster read than the other ones, maybe because I was hooked and read it too fast, but the pace was quick. Others may or may not like that. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I stayed up way too late to finish this book once I started reading last night. The author grabbed me from the first page. Even though I hadn't read the first two in the series (yet), I had no trouble catching on to the characters, the back story, and references to previous cases. C. Hope Clark is a new favorite for me. I'm a former mystery-lover who'd taken a hiatus from reading fiction while I worked on my non-fiction book. Now, I see the error of my ways. Reading a great book, fiction or non-fiction, recharges me and ignites my creativity. I'll be picking up her other books.

Although I enjoyed Echoes of Edisto, I am mad. The outcomes of events were not completely unexpected but I am mad nonetheless. Although I considered not continuing the series, I will keep reading. I am just going to sit over here and be mad about it for a little while.
