The hit comedy I HATE FAIRYLAND is back for a second round of adventure. What will become of Fairyland as Gert is crowned the new queen and how will that affect her thirty-year quest to return home?
Skottie Young has been an illustrator and cartoonist for over ten years working for entertainment and publishing companies such Marvel, Warner Bros., Image, Upper Deck, Mattel, and many more.
He is currently illustrating the New York Times Best Selling and Eisner Award Nominated adaptions of L. Frank Baum's OZ novels with writer Eric Shanower. The series has gained acclaim from both fans and critics.
Skottie currently lives in Illinois with his family, Casey, Baxter and their Saint Bernard, Emma.
SPOILSIES to anyone who’s not read the first arc of I Hate Fairyland as this issue begins where that one ends.
All the boppy tops who get upset over “spoilers” that are actually the premise gone? Good!
Gertie has been trying to escape Fairyland for 27 years except, despite her raging, rampant moidering she’s actually, somehow, become ruler of the muffin-huggin’ place instead! But Gert’s about to learn being Queen ain’t all it’s cracked up to be and not nearly as fluffing easy as she thinks!
In his afterword, Skottie Young admits to writing himself into a corner with the first book’s ending. Gert as Queen of Fairyland is a go-nowhere storyline and, reading this issue, he’s right. It’s a static position that doesn’t allow for the roaming, rampaging Gertie that made Fairyland such a fun comic in the first place, not to mention uncharacteristic of her – why would she care about helping Fairyland operate? Poor bloke sounds like he’s at the end of his tether – he’s got a newborn too, he probably hasn’t slept in weeks!
So this issue is basically a false start to the second arc as Young tries different things to make the Queen Gertie storyline work before abandoning it entirely by the end. It’s not a terrible read just an unfocused one. Young pokes fun at fantasy staples Harry Potter and Game of Thrones (“Winter Is Coming… Harriet Winter. From HR. To fire you.”) and it’s amusing seeing Gertie inadvertently becoming the evil queen through sheer incompetence at the job. And the best part is still an entire issue of Young’s wonderful artwork and Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s beautiful colours.
I Hate Fairyland #6 is an awkward beginning to the second arc but it looks like the series is back on track now with Gertie and Larry off on more ultra-violent adventures! And I loved the Gertie cosplay photos at the end of this issue – that middle-aged fella dressed as a demented little girl posing with Skottie Young was fluffin’ awesome!
The second story-arc of "I hate Fairyland" (appropriately titled "Fluff my life") [more-or-less]kicks off in grand fashion only to have
Gotta confess, I didn't see that coming. But it certainly makes me want to see where they're going with this next! The next issue could really determine the fate of the comic with the arc that he sets up. (This issue was realistically more of a "Transition piece" than the true start of an arc.)
Really, this should be a 3-star issue (especially after that AWESOME first arc!!), but I can't bring myself to give it that because it's still a brilliant piece of comics work.
I love Skottie Young and I love Gert so I couldn't bring myself to give this issue less than three stars, but honestly, it was probably more of a two star issue.
All writers, sooner or later, learn the dangers of writing one's self into a corner and that's essentially what happened in issue #5. He wrote himself into a corner and then the only way to get out was to take back what he had done. I completely understand. However, it still makes for bad writing and bad reading.
I think there's still hope for this comic, but it's all going to lie in the arc he sets up in the next issue.
I recently picked up issues 6 and 7 of the I Hate Fairyland series and I’m so excited to be able to read more from this series!
Issue 6 picks up right where the last story arc left off and jumps straight into the action.
I’m not going to go into the plot at all because of spoilers but I have to say I was a little disappointed in this issue. Although I’m excited to be diving back into this series, not a lot happened in this story and I feel like we’re back where we started. However, I am interested to read on and see what happens.
So the fabulous plot twist in the last story arc was very anti - climatically undone. This was like, Plot twist you husband who came back to life is actually dead again. oh the Drama!
When I purchased this at Half Price Books the clerk was keen to inform me that this particular comic is bonkers. In my mind I saw Skottie Young's name on the cover and was familiar with it from Middlewest. Having hopped into the 6th issue of this series he does called I Hate Fairyland, I can say with absolute certainty that, yes, this comic is, in fact, BONKERS! It has the kind of zany writing as something like Gumball, Gravity Falls or Adventure Time- if said properties were given the ability to be as gory as possible. If anything it's like an Adult Swim show with a budget. It's fast paced and gross and at almost every turn, damn HILARIOUS! A true riot start to finish and just bizarre enough to make even the starkest outcast feel welcome. That said... I don't think I have the particular body type to survive the demand this comic's aura vibrates. It's... a lot. And it feels more inclined to be a good breakaway comic- a well earned slice of levity in between all the grim comics I read. Reading this consecutively in a trade format might kill me.
¡Me emociona saber que pasará a continuación! Adoro las referencias, los personajes, los colores y la trama en sí. No estaré tranquila hasta terminar toda la historia de Gertrude.
Mi reseña de toda la historia estará en el último comic
I gave this three star because I love the art in I Hate Fairyland more than I love milkshakes!
I was just disappointed by as he said it myself being "good wifed", that thing series like to do where they are like boom! Shock and AW! only to turn around and be like naw. I know he said he followed the what Gert wanted more or less but I just didn't feel her presence in this issue.
But I fucking Lovvvvve I hate Fairyland and I know in my bones the next issue will be the blood, guts and glory we all know and love known as Gert.
Surprising to say the least. Kind of like the idea we won't be stuck with Fairyland politics forever, but thought we'd have to deal with it for at least one arc. Kind of would have like to see Gert as an evil queen, but oh well. Now that the idea has been planted of seeing her actually as an adult in the comic, I'm kind of into it. Though I suppose she will have to stay in Fairyland forever. Giving this one more issue because it's good enough but not everything I want.

Una lectura entretenida. Los dibujos son geniales. El argumento tiene sus altibajos, pero en general es divertido. Magia, sangre y puteadas, es en resumen.
The second arc, we learn that this wasn't originally in the cards, isn't off to a great start. The humor, and even the look, is not there. As we read Skottie Young's thoughts on this, it is clear he wasn't into where this was headed either. I agree with him that Gert wasn't made for the role he put her in. Boring fluffer stuff!
So, this issue is merely a righting of where the first arc placed Gert. There is great promise from the author to get back to the mayhem we look forward to with reading this comic book. Let's hope he delivers. This, after all, was a let down from the previous issues.
Boo! I really didn't love this issue. Infact, I'm not even sure I liked it but I appreciated Skottie's note at the end so much that I graced it with 3 stars. It.. it kinda just fell flat. It was too silly. It felt like it was trying to push too hard. Maybe it's the sleep deprevation or maybe this was just the art he was going for, either way, I didn't connect with it this time round.
