Max Brod was a German-speaking Czech Jewish, later Israeli, author, composer, and journalist. Although he was a prolific writer in his own right, he is most famous as the friend and biographer of Franz Kafka. As Kafka's literary executor, Brod refused to follow the writer's instructions to burn his life's work, and had them published instead.

Max Brod is in the shadow of his friend Franz Kafka, whose works he saved from oblivion. Max Brod is a superb artist in his own right, not only a novelist, but also I have heard a composer (I am yet to listen to his compositions). This novel is a major work in the Jewish literary cannon, not only for its historical breadth and scope, but also for its psychological portrayal of Renaissance European Judaism. If you want to understand Jewish history and Jewish Messianic Cults better, and you can find the translation (some specialized libraries may have it), then this novel is a must read. Perhaps read this one first and then Tokarczuk's 'The Books of Jacob' which depicts a later Jewish messianic movement.
