This was not the first time I had read the Bible in a year, nor the first time to try and read the Bible chronologically in a year. However, it was the first time I followed through with desire and passion to hear God speak instead of just marking off each day on a reading plan. I absolutely loved the beauty of the scriptures in chronological order. When I read of David’s struggles and then immediately followed with the psalm he wrote at that precise moment, the context made the entire event hit differently, more purpose driven. I have definitely felt a positive shift in my relationship with God this year as I walked chronologically with Him throughout this crazy year!
This was a delightful experience undertaken with a good friend. There's nothing like reading through the entire Bible in a year. I've done it a couple times before with several years in between and will certainly do it again in the future. It was also fun to color some of the images, although they are beautiful just on their own in black and white.
This is the fourth or fifth time I tried to read the Bible in a Year, but it is the first time I actually succeeded. Though this translation isn't my favorite for slow studying it was a good translation for easier reading. I loved the margin space to write in. The coloring parts are fun but I didn't have the time to do many of them.
This is the first time I’ve read through the Bible using the New Living Translation (NLT) version. I’ve also read through with the NIV and NASB and this is by far my favorite. The sentence structure is simple yet true to the the original intent.
I also prefer this chronological ordering for a one year Bible. It makes those early books of the OT easier to complete bc you are reading about what’s happening with the Israelites in Exodus while reading about the laws given in Numbers. As another example, you read stories of Saul and David in 1 and 2 Samuel while reading 1 and 2 Chronicles of the kings. It helps seal the events in your memory more easily.
Things I particularly liked - a single column of text, wide margins for writing notes/prayers, the look with the pretty leaves 🍁 on the page edges, and the scripture index so you could find the pages of particular verses.
Things that were just eh for me:
1. The doodle verses in the margins. I have the same doodle verses for my NLT Inspire Bible that I take to church. There, I will color them while listening to the sermon. I used this Daily Bible only during my quiet time and I didn’t have time to read, pray, AND color.
2. The NLT version has very few footnotes and cross references. For a deeper study of scripture, particularly to see how scripture interprets scripture, I would recommend the NASB version. I often found myself referencing that version to see if I’d missed something.
3. I’m in another small group Bible study in which we are reading more slowly through the New Testament. I couldn’t take just this Bible on vacation because the chapters are interspersed with other books due to the chronological format. This may sound like a well duh, but something to consider if you travel frequently. I took two Bibles for most of our travels. (It’s also why I’m finishing early so I don’t have to take both on a short trip.😅)
I enjoy reading through the entire Bible periodically because it equips me to lead my children and other believers in study. I also believe all scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching us what is true (2 Tim 3:16) and that the Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth (John 16:12). I find that I get more out any Bible reading when I start by asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate God’s word. When I did not do that, this daily Bible just became a checklist activity - not a spiritual activity. When I did start with that prayer, I experienced God’s word as being alive and active, sharper than a two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).
Final thoughts. In my opinion, a distinguishing characteristic of true Christ followers vs nominal Christians = a desire to be taught by God’s word daily. (I say that with grace because I’ve fallen in both of those categories in my life.) A daily pursuit of God’s word should be led by the Holy Spirit. This daily structure is just ONE means of doing that. If the Holy Spirit leads you to examine 2-3 verses each day, that’s where you need to be. I look forward to slowing down in 2023 and reading fewer chapters a week with my discipleship group. This approach will give me more time to meditate/reflect on what I’m reading.
Of course, God's Word is so wonderful it's lowering it to rate it. I really enjoyed reading the Bible chronologically this year, but sometimes, it wasn't as strictly chronological as I wanted. I suppose that requires more interpretation than a publisher wants to do, since it depends on debatable factors. However, whenever it was clear, it was very helpful to have a harmony of not only the Gospels, but the OT kings intermixed with their poetry and the prophets wherever they fit (generally).
Also this Bible is no good for taking to church, because it's too complicated to look up specific references. That's not really what it's for, however. I also thought it was pretty, and though I didn't journal through it, that's nice to have if someone wants that feature. It was nice to have it split up into daily readings, since you can't base your reading through a year off of chapters read, with the chapters split up into pieces here and there. I've read this 2 1/2 times, last year as well, and the NT once before that in 2022. I felt I gleaned more in some of the readings with the modern translation, but other times it bothered me because I had memorized a passage or book in the KJV.
When I looked through this Bible, I knew this would be a great one to keep. It is in chronological order which means that it presents the events in the order they actually happened. You can start on January 1 reading about the beginning of time and then finish on December 31 reading about the end of times. The tops of the pages are notated by date rather than by book of the Bible. It should read smoothly and help you understand a little more about the events in the Bible. I would recommend this Bible to anyone who would like to read the Bible in one year and also learn how all of the events happened in order.
The format of this Bible is splendid. I was not sure if I wanted to color in my Bible at first, but it ended up being one of my favorite things about this Bible. I am glad they used the NLT, it was easy to follow as we went along chronologically (easier, I'd think, than the NKJV or NASB would have been). The binding was great and I love that it has two bookmarks! The tables and indexes in the back were also very helpful. Five stars!
I’ve always enjoyed reading the Bible through in a year but rarely finish. This year I’m in a women’s group doing this together. Having the weekly accountability has made all the difference. The discussions are so enlightning. Most of us are using this edition of the Bible and enjoy, and find it extremely valuable, having the spaces on the side to make notes.
I loved the stories being laid out chronologically. It took me well over 1 year, 2 years, actually, but it is the first time I've read the entire Bible through. It helped me grow in my faith and has guided me to follow Christ's teachings.
I love this Bible so much! I’ve never read one chronically, so this was a new experience. The illustrations are beautiful. It’s been very cathartic to sit and color them in. This is a Bible I will return to frequently.
Great method of reading through the Bible with a look at the proper timing of events. Although, I love the language of the KJV. The NLT gives is more readable (understanding).
This Expressions One Year Chronological Bible is so beautiful! I did not NEED another Bible when I first saw this one, but the attraction of it was too great a pull for me to resist! I love the Chronological set-up and I love that this Bible is set up so I can read the Bible in chronological order each day with the dates and the readings corresponding. I'd used a printout of the Chronological Bible reading for several years and disliked very much all the flipping around, back and forth, often to read just one or two verses per chapter/book. So having this Bible is. God-send! Plus I get to color in it!!
I simply love reading my Bible.
Another read-through! I love it more and more every time.
