The Endurance #1

Greyson's Doom

Rate this book
The AI declares Greyson is going to die and he must train his replacement.

Captain Greyson Durant has been in the job for three months, the youngest captain to ever lead the Endurance, when he is assigned to mentor the even younger Emmaline Victore, who resents the disruption to her life and Grey, too…but the longevity of the Endurance depends on them finding a way to work together.

Greyson’s Doom is the first book in a new, suspenseful and imaginative science fiction romance series by award-winning SFR author Tracy Cooper-Posey, set aboard the closed-system marathon-class vessel Endurance, a generation ship a thousand years from its destination.  If you like the smart, romantic SF of authors like Linnea Sinclair and Anna Hackett, you will love Greyson’s Doom.

Praise for Tracy Cooper-Posey’s science fiction romance:

I can't wait to see where this new world takes us!

I know Tracy is a great writer but I was not much into science fiction. Well, now I am!!

You come away from reading this book wishing it were real so that you could be traveling amongst the stars yourself.

The world building is spot on, and the different worlds described are so vivid and lush, it's like you're right there.

Like all of this author’s books, you can't go wrong.  Amazing Author.  Amazing Read.

The moment you start reading, you get sucked into the story and will not be able to put the book away that easily.

I'm not a huge sci-fi fan but now Tracy Cooper-Posey might have just turned me on to this genre.

The Endurance Series

First, I do NOT always review in series! I just seem to be on a series-reading trend at the moment. That’s a “very good thing” because it means the books are captivating me to the point where I don’t want to leave that ‘world’. But it makes it difficult to separate the books out for a proper one-book review, so please forgive me for yet another long, combined review!

The series is comprised of these four stories: 5,001 (a short story), Greyson’s Doom, Yesterday’s Legacy, and Promissory Note. While first in the series, 5,001 actually comes later chronologically, which is how I’m going to discuss the series.

Background
The ‘world’ is The Endurance, a generational ship of colonists who have left Old Terra and are on their way to a new home referred to as Destination. The ship is led by a captain, but a lot of the ‘work’ of the ship is actually in the hands of an artificial intelligence system. The ship has been fitted with everything needed to sustain multiple generations of humans within a closed system. The ship is divided into regions, some resemble crowded cities, some industrial areas, while others are parkland and farmland with scattered residences among living trees and plants to mimic Old Terra. There is a river, or water system, the motion of the ship creates gravity and the AI controls a day/night system of lighting. People are born from artificial wombs and the AI selects people to serve as parents. There are limited children born in order the maintain a viable and supportable number of people on the ship, so becoming a parent is considered an honour, although everyone on board really work together to raise children properly. Upon reaching a certain age – about 14 – children are assigned a mentor and raised to work within certain occupations that support the ship. Everyone is assigned a daily amount of rations and entitled to a certain number of energy credits which is used to ‘print’ or generate everything from food to clothes, tools, or items of interest. All waste or objects no longer wanted are recycled or added to the energy pool of the ship. People are loosely divided into patricians and plebeians based on occupation, family, and where they live. Everyone comes together to enjoy tankball, however – a ball game played in special arenas where the ball and the arena or tank goes through various levels of gravity from 2 gs to zero-g. People become quite obsessive over the game, and I admit that I’d love to see it played for real! People’s lives are mostly open to public view, as news, activities, and personal ‘blogs’ are freely available and widespread on the Forum, which I tend to think of as a system like Facebook on steroids. People can post anything, comment on anything, and debate over anything. Everyone’s lives are available for public view so this keeps people ‘honest’. The only thing missing is there don’t seem to be any pets on the ship, so no widespread photos of kittens or puppies.

Greyson’s Doom (ship years 210-219)
Greyson Durant is the newest captain of The Endurance. He has not been in the position for long, having taken over when his mentor stepped down. The story begins when Greyson is assigned a child to mentor. This is not as good news as it sounds, as there is only one captain, this means that the AI has calculated the odds that a new captain will be needed not far into the future – in other words, Greyson is going to die at a young age. So it is with some resentment that he takes on the mentorship of Emmaline Victore, age 14. Problem is that Emmaline does not want to be captain! The first part of the story takes us through the challenges Greyson and Emmaline face as he tries to teach her how to be a captain through challenging her at every turn while she tries to resist but finds herself not able to resist answering those challenges. Years pass. Emmaline has grown into an adult and gets assigned to work on the Bridge staff until Greyson is to meet his predicted fate. Somewhere along the way, Greyson and Emmaline fall in love. But Greyson’s fate comes all too soon when a mysterious flu-like infection sweeps over the ship. Emmaline is forced to take over the captaincy while adding her efforts to keep Greyson and the rest of the people on the ship alive. I won’t say how that ends, but it’s an interesting twist!

Yesterday’s Legacy (ship year 313)
Marlow Fitzgerald is in charge of the civil guard on board The Endurance. When there is an incident at a tankball game, her path crosses that of Jonah Solomon, a radical free-thinker who has taken the unusual path of being raised a patrician to not having an occupation. He has gone through several, and lived in several districts on the ship, so he has a unique perspective, seeing life through the eyes of both patricians and plebeians. He has become quite popular writing essays on the Forum, and has managed to supplement the basic rations by bartering stories for goods. In the current ship environment, there is a lot of unhappiness as rations are cut, and the captain and Bridge crew have made decisions that the populace is unhappy with. Unrest grows steadily and Marlow and Jonah are caught in the middle of a complicated political game – literally as people become divided by which tankball teams they support, teams which divide along lines of patricians, plebeians, and Bridge crew. The games become opportunities for people on all sides to show their public support for or against others, which leads to rioting. Somewhere in the midst of threats of mutiny, Marlow and Jonah find love. Jonah also discovers his true role on the ship, and Marlow discovers her own role is more complex than she thought.

Promissory Note (ship year 402)
Life on board The Endurance seems to have gotten a bit grittier. Especially for the average citizen, like socially popular engineer Laura Hyland, who has found herself in a position of needing an extension on a loan. The loan was to afford her apartment home in one of the crowded cities in exchange for growing produce on her rooftop for a local shopkeeper – a wily man who is a true master of bartering, which is the only economic system available as currency has no meaning on a ship where basic needs are provided for everyone through a system of rations and energy credits, as it has been since the day the ship launched its journey. When she goes to ask for an extension, Laura discovers her promissory note was exchanged to Micah Thorn, a notoriously unpopular, unsocial man who makes a living coding systems to support the ship. Coding covers all of the systems, basically making improvements shipwide under direction of the AI. Micah offers a deal – if Laura will work on a research project for him on the side, he will consider it payment for her note. Laura agrees, despite knowing that Micah is feared by most people for his constant scowl, rumours of revenge against those that anger him, and a mysterious past – very unusual as he must be the only person without a real presence on the Forum. Laura finds herself increasingly intrigued by both Micah and the research project he has her doing. Micah is similarly intrigued by the Laura, as she seems to be the only person that sees through his scowl and is also intelligent enough to grasp the theory he is trying to work out in his research. A project that turns out to have major implications for the future of everyone on The Endurance.

5,001 (ship year 735)
Caelen Williams, a master engineer, is called by the Bridge to investigate a serious problem – they are losing water. This should be impossible since the ship is a closed system and everything is recycled. The problem has been increasing over the past 17 years and if it continues, threatens the lives of everyone onboard. Caelen discovers that the data systems have somehow been manipulated to create this problem, but to learn who and why, she needs the help of Devar Todd, a former primary coder whom Caelen has a previous relationship with. Devar no longer works as a coder, has become a bit of a recluse, because he was charged with game fraud surrounding tankball – roughly 17 years ago. Caelen and Devar have a theory that he was framed, around the same time the problems with the ship’s water system began. Is this a coincidence or is there something more going on? The former lovers reconnect as they come to a startling conclusion, and must take risks to test their theory – a theory that will exonerate Devar while also having a MAJOR impact on the ship and the lives of the people on board. This short story ends with a revelation that I truly hope the author explores more fully in a later book!

Bottomline
I found the concept of life on a generational colonist ship fascinating, and the author does an amazing job of showing how various systems – not just mechanical or physical, but social, economics, etc., function together. I felt like this would have been a fascinating project to have done back in my college days when I was taking a course in system dynamics as part of a futures studies program. I probably would have made a better grade if I could have used this series as an example and mapped out the various systems and how they worked together! The author does an excellent job of showing the ship as an enclosed system along all of the STEEPLED concepts we studied. (STEEPLED being a multi-perspective view of looking at a system through its component parts of social, technology, environment, economics, politics, legal, education, and demographics, and how these parts influence each other.) This series totally appealed to the futurist side of me as well as to the SF fan and the romantic inside. Yes, there is love and sex in this story, but not a lot of the latter, or at least it doesn’t seem like a lot, but I found myself so caught up in other aspects of the story that there may be more than I realize. I admit, this world is proving to be difficult to leave behind. I want to live in this world. I think I read there will be another book in the series coming out soon and I seriously hope that is correct! I’d pick this as one of those series that I want to never end! (Apologies to the author, I know writing does not work that way.)

Interesting, interesting premise about a generation ship voyaging for hundreds of years to colonize a distant planet. The narrative revolves around the captain (Greyson) and Emma, his successor in training, as they develop their relationship and guide the ship through the stars. A bit slow to start, the narrative can be wooden in places, but the overall concept is fascinating.

What an intriguing story! The setting is a colony ship and life is different but recognizable. The romance was shaky at first but need to triumphant.

Well, this was awesome. New-to-me author Cooper-Posey proves that futuristic romance can be intelligent and engaging. That it can be focused on the story and the characters and that outer space is not just a backdrop for sweaty, weightless sex and sexy Captain Kirks in skinsuits and smirks. Not that those things aren't fun, either.

"Greyson's Doom" is set on the starship The Endurance, 1000 years away from its destination. Its inhabitants live their lives on the ship as engineers and medics and farmers, each person trained to do a specific job. Population is controlled by AI, so that having a child to raise is a task given only to the best and brightest. And mentoring your replacement, your Mini Me, can be a decade's long task. Enter twenty-something Captain Greyson, newly minted into his position and suddenly he's been selected to mentor his replacement, a young girl named Emmaline. And considering that the average human lifespan is now about 140 years, Grayson concludes that his life will be cut short in about 10 years - why else would the AI select him to train his replacement?

The story follows Emma and Greyson's relationship over the course of this decade. It's a slow, measured process, like the journey of The Endurance. Cooper-Posey did an awesome job creating the world lived on this vessel, with tankball entertainment and territorial districts and clothing fashion and even Cavers, people who refuse to believe that they are travelling on a spaceship since they have never seen outer space. The romance between Emma and Greyson is sweet - this is not erotica. But it is very good and very recommended.

Tracy give us science fiction at its best – The Endurance on its 1,000-year voyage!

The Endurance is a closed-system ship and must be able to maintain itself and its people for a 1,000 year voyage. Many systems are run by AI – including deciding what career in which you will excel. Captain Greyson Durant, the youngest captain to lead the Endurance, is assigned to mentor even younger Emmaline Victore as his replacement. Unfortunately for Greyson this means statistically he will meet his demise within the next 6-10 years. Unfortunately for Emmaline, as she has no interest in being captain. Then it is revealed that every child of assignable age has been assigned a mentor – meaning 124 people will be replaced within a very short time span sometime in the near future. What event is the AI predicting, and what does that mean for Endurance?

Besides the overall mystery of the impending danger, we are treated to a fascinating world upon this ship which is like a country within itself and includes hi-tech systems to accomplish their mission in a self-sustaining manner. We are also able to delve into the hearts and minds of Greyson and Emmaline as they both deal with the situation of the mentor relationship and what it means to be captain over the Endurance.

Great start to a new series. Greyson Durant is the captain of the Endurance, a generation ship that won’t reach its destination for a thousand years. Grey has been assigned to mentor his replacement, Emma, a girl who is only 14 and will take over as Captain of the ship when Grey dies. This is a fast paced read with plenty of drama and suspense. Emma doesn’t want to be Captain, however they must find a way to work together as the years pass by and Emma grows up. I liked the story and am looking forward to finding out what happens next! Exciting Sci-fi!

There is a plot hole big enough to fly the Endurance through in the very first chapter. That no one else has noticed it or seen fit to comment is both frustrating and depressing.

One of the lynchpins of the plot is that population control is monitored and advised by a highly advanced and extremely accurate AI. Unfortunately, the author treats said AI like it's a modern-day Oracle at Delphi, making arcane and inscrutable pronouncements. It predicts something, and everyone on the ship treats it as a done deal. Which is flatly ridiculous, and not how statistical modeling works.

An AI would make predictions based on data. The more data, the better the predictions--and yes, an AI that's been monitoring everything for 200+ years would have a LOT of data. Because its predictions are based on data, if it predicts that someone is going to die, it can tell them how it came to that conclusion. And if it can tell them how it came to that conclusion, then the death can likely be prevented. Which would be the whole point of creating the predictive program in the first place: to avert problems before they happen. Certainly before they become deadly.

This is something that the author clearly doesn't grasp, so neither do her characters. In the first chapter, when Greyson learns he's supposed to die, his first question should be: how did the AI arrive at that conclusion? But he never thinks to pursue it, nor does anyone else. To my great annoyance, even when the projected body count rises, nobody thinks to ask. I kept reading on the thin hope that this would somehow be the reveal: that the humans had lost a basic understanding of how the AI works, something that they rediscover during the story. But it was not, and the actual reveal was implausible to the point of ridiculous.

Endurance, the AI-controlled generation ship carrying humanity to its future, controls births, future role assignments and occupations for everyone's century-plus lifespans. So when twenty-two year old Greyson, only three months into the command of Endurance, is assigned to mentor his replacement, it is a death sentence. It means the AI predicts his demise within a decade. Emmaline, his brilliant, recalcitrant mentee, is all of fourteen. How does one live with an expiration date? With a future highjacked barely out of childhood? The mythical Sword of Damocles hangs over Endurance, and when it falls, will the ommniscient AI's preparations save them? Or are humans, with their irrationally random thoughts and emotion-driven behaviors, the best architects of their own survival? The slow build to a gripping finish makes this a compelling read. The underlying conflicts of logic, security, creative thought, and the motivating power of love make it thought provoking and memorable. This is a most unforgettable book, well worth reading and re-reading. (This review comes after my third time reading it since it's publlication, and yes, I will read it again.)

This was was good. I loved this science fiction with a touch of romance even if i admit that i probably read it differently that i would have done before covid.
The characters are moving, i loved how they grew to understand each other and they are such a great match.
Young captain is suddenly told he must train his successor.....not easy because it does seem unfair to have to do that so early in his life because he is supposed to die young. But when the one selected to be the next one is a stubborn young lady who really has no intention of becoming captain that's just even better.

I loved the story and just want to get more of this universe

I've read other storylines of Tracys' and have not been disappointed yet.
This was an awesome quick read for me. The story kept moving along and never seemed to get bogged down.
Living on a generational spaceship leads to unique ways to continue throughout the generations. Oxygen, population control, and many other life saving obstacles must be overcome. This story brought different ideas to how we would live in such a situation along with some romance and a self fulfilling prophecy. What do you do when you are told you have 10 years to live? Read this story to find out.

Wonderful book! Emmy doesn't want to be ship Captain - ever. But the AI has selected her as the best choice. Captain Greyson lures her into the apprenticeship with thought provoking questions and hot chocolate. He knows she must train because he is destined to die young within 10 years; Emmy has to be ready by then to take his place. Brilliant Emmy is determined that Greyson not die, but what can she possibly do to stop it??

the mythology is very intriguing…

Didn’t see the big twist coming, for that I give it four stars. I loved Emmie and Grey, but part of his actions made me angry and hurt even though it bothered Emmie less. So a decent read.

This review is for The Endurance Box one
This box is included the first four books of the Endurance series, The endurance is a generational ship on a journey of 1000 years to its destination, in each book we see the development of a new challenge for the inhabitants of the ship and how their society is evolving. It's a great sci-fi story, with a lot of action elements and intrigue, the world creation is very good, and the narrative catches.
In the closed system of a ship travelling through space, the Endurance is designed to provide sustenance to its inhabitants, with the support of artificial intelligence that determines with a system of mentors the occupation of the people in the ship.
Greyson'sDoom:
In the book with which the saga begins, when the artificial intelligence of the ship assigns the new captain whit a mentor to train, everyone assumes that the captain has little time left to live; Shortly after the AI assigns new mentors in different areas of work, presumably that the ship is close to a catastrophe. It is the duty of Captain Greyson and his pupil Emmaline to find the best way to deal with the crisis. The two very good characters, the story hooks.
Yesterday's Legacy:
This story features great action sequences and a lot of intrigues. It has been 100 years since the events of the previous book, after dismantling the pupil system where the AI assigned the trades of the inhabitants of the Endurance, each person chooses what his occupation is. The differences between the districts of the ship have been accentuated and now fractions with political interests are being generated; Jonah and Marlow are involved in the intrigues of the struggle for control of the ship and it is in their hands to avoid the destruction of the ship.

OMG I am so glad that this author finally got around to writing SF cause she's great at it and has proven it by being a SFR winner. The story grabbed me immediately as it surprised me with the age of the heroine and the world this story takes place in. The characters are both wonderfully complex and simple at the same time with a touch of sarcastic humor. We have a curious event that brings the two main characters together and that tells them that death is around the corner for one of them. This later turns out to be true for their entire world and the heroine won't let destiny destroy their world. During the time frame this story takes place in, both characters learn to work together despite the fact that one desperately does not want to be there. They also realize that all their time together has given them unwanted feelings and to top that off they have a really big (and I mean REALLY BIG) event thrown at them. I'm not a good reviewer as I just can't put into words what I really want to say and I also don't like to do spoilers which makes it doubly hard. Let me just say you HAVE to get this book and read about this fantastic world and all the characters in it. So to all SF fans out there, I highly recommend this book be on your reading list. To the author, PLEASE keep giving us these amazing stories.

If you never thought you would love sci-fi, read this books it will change your mind. Captain Greyson nows what it means when he is told he has been assigned a child to mentor, there is only one position as Captain of the Endurance. His replacement Emmaline Victore is still a young girl and must trained..the Endurance must continue to go forward to its destination!
Emmaline a highly intelligent and out of the box thinker, is not the least bit happy to find she has been selected to be mentored for none other than the Captaincy. Finding the courage to express her views, not just for herself but also the implications this has on Captain Greyson, she has decided to fight.
This is a lovely journey as they grow together, solving the tedious and heart rending issues of an enclosed moving world, fighting to survive and a love that is worth fighting for.
I can't get enough of this amazing writers books, she always leaves me spellbound! I was gifted an Arc for an honest review!

I really enjoy this world that Ms. Cooper-Posey created. It is really quite fascinating to say the least. One of the best things about this world, for me, is how intricate everything is. She shows how everything, no matter how small seeming, relies on something else to be that way.
I've read some snippets and free novellas for the entire series and really hope that she puts out a bundle so I can just binge read everything at once. Instead of trying to piece everything together, since I have a lot of stuff out of order. Though there is no problem at all if you do this because the story telling is really awesome for this series like that.
I enjoyed reading Grey and Emmaline's story. It actually grew over the decades instead of being an insta-love thing, which would have been squidgy with the age and maturity difference. It was also a good opportunity for Cooper-Posey to paint and flesh out the background/world in a way that wasn’t an annoying info dump.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Greyson's Doom is the first book in a new series and beautifully sets the scene of a futuristic life on board the Endurance, a ship traveling through space on a 1,000 year voyage to a new habitable planet as Earth is no longer hospitable.
Although this is a science fiction story, I found I didn't have to suspend reality to get absorbed in this book. I kept coming up with conspiracy theories trying to guess the outcome of the main problem in the book. Without giving anything away, I thought that te artificial intelligence created the 'issue' in order to fulfill its own statistical prophecy. I was wrong. Though I thought the ending was a tad anticlimactic, it was a wonderfully written introduction to a futuristic reality and I can't wait to delve in to the next book.

I have enjoyed Tracy's books and Greyson's Doom is the first Sci Fi romance of hers that I have read. I enjoyed the book, the character's were well developed, the world on the Endurance was very real, I could imagine myself visiting some of the places, not like being on a space craft. I found the first part of the book very slow, I know the history of the Endurance had to be explained and Emmie's reason for being a part of the crew and her and Greyson's relationship but I found this hard going. The latter part of the book definitely picked up pace and there was some suspense as Emmie and the crew tried to find out what was causing the contagion. Overall was an OK book.

An intriguing story with great characters. I loved the SciFi mixed with romance!

I couldn’t put it down! After a mind-blowing introduction to the alternative universe this book is set in and then getting acquainted with the main characters, I was intrigued to know what was going to unfold!!

I was impressed with the wonderful alternate world the characters live in: all the repercussions of this environment and its impact on the story. It’s a lovely gentle romance mixed beautifully with SciFi.
I have to add that if you want more, as I did, then the novella "5,001" is the prequel to this series. which I thoroughly enjoyed too.

Although Tracy Cooper-Posey is one of my fav authors I really wasn't sure of this book and if I wanted to read it..............boy am I glad I did! It pulled me in right away and kept me reading right up to the last word. Thank goodness she releases books so quickly as I really don't want to wait long for the next book in this series, good job!!!
