Zoe
I’m not interested. I’m not interested in his blue-green ocean colored eyes, his lean muscular body, or that crooked smile that can be so infuriating. I have more important things to worry about, like how to keep myself in college and my sixteen year old brother fed and sheltered. We all know life is hard, some of us just learn that lesson younger than others, but that doesn’t mean I’ll give up. I intend to succeed and make sure my brother has the opportunities he deserves, and no privileged jerk is going to distract me.

Landon
I don’t date. Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from celibate, but my condition makes carrying on any kind of normal relationship impossible. My life revolves around In Safe Hands or ISH, the underground hacker group I work with to track down and take care of predators and sex offenders who beat the system. I’m satisfied with my life until the day I meet the smart mouthed, compassionate, determined woman who opens my eyes to possibilities I never thought existed.

This is book one in a series of standalone novels.

3.5 to 4*

Zoe is only twenty-three but at times her life makes her feel much older, she's a student but she's also responsible for her sixteen year old brother Ethan. So on top of school work she cleans, they live in a crappy area and struggle just to get by.
Landon is rich he's also a cocky conceited womaniser and our first meeting with him doesn't go well.
Zoe ends up cleaning for Landon and slowly we form a much better picture of him. He's still a rich cocky conceited womaniser but there's much more to him than that, a medical condition has shaped his life and he lives the only way he feels he can but his growing feeling for Zoe make him wonder if he could have more.
This is the first book I've read by this author and while I enjoyed it and will most likely continue on with the rest of the series it was different in that throughout the book several major things happened but they were like little bumps in the road and we were off and running again. It took a bit of getting used to, I don't know if this is the author's style or if it was just this book.
All things considered it's a nice entertaining read full of interesting and likeable characters.

“I want to buy you a drink.” His stubborn entitled attitude annoys me.
“And I want to be ten pounds lighter and a million dollars richer. I don’t get what I want, neither do you.”

“Zoe.” I’ve never been crazy about my name, but coming from his lips it sounds sexy. “That’s a beautiful name.”
“Thank you. I got it for my birthday.”

“Yep. I love pizza. Don’t think I’ll ever outgrow it.”
“You shouldn’t. It’s one of the four food groups.”
Giggling, she shakes her head. “I’m afraid to ask what the others are.”
“Bacon, Donuts, and Beer.”

“I don’t want to take you here, with tragedy surrounding us, but be warned, the first time I get you alone I’m going to fuck you ragged.”

“Sick of being trapped with me already?” he teases.
“I’d rather be trapped with some pancakes and sausage.”

Landon was an annoying piece of shit , cringey and one dimensional. A yoyo; I can't, I can, another girl, I want Zoey. His bullshit got old fast. Zoey just takes him back in 0.5 seconds; girl, where is your self respect? He never worked for her, he was a bum and his proposal was actual crap. I only liked one scene with his yellow "space" suit. Pass.

What a mess. Shallow and kind of going nowhere at 25% Then the heroic team disposed of a body by putting it through a chipper and FEEDING IT TO THE PIGS. I. Can’t. Even.
Yeah, I follow a plant-based diet but still, doesn’t that put EVERYONE off their bacon?
This author is not for me. Bon Appetit.

DNF @ 20%

Even though this couple isn’t in a relationship yet, the H is a man whore who likes to have one night stands. The h, who cleans for him, gets the fun job of finding random panties.

I’m already over it, and him, and I haven’t hit the half way mark.

This ones not for me.

DNF

Bad writing plus annoying characters equals a bad combination

I'm honestly fed up with idiots for main characters. Perhaps I'm not in the target audience but it was all so juvenile, so immature and simply stupid, I gave up pretty quickly. If I wanted to read a bad wattpad book, I'd go to wattpad, not amazon. Thank god this was free otherwise I'd be pretty pissed off at this point.
Maybe there are people who actually enjoy this style of writing, zero depth and morons for characters. I am not one of them, though. And since I'm no masochist either I DNFed. Life is too short for this.
Sorry not sorry.

Boring and poorly executed. I think this is the first time I've completely read a full-length novel and am giving it a 1 star. It is very shallow with absolutely no depth to the characters or to the plot. It's very...blah.

20something Zoe was thrown out of her overly religious parents' house for being a non believer, and now she's raising her teenage brother who was thrown out for being gay.
She goes out with her friend to a club and turns down a guy for a drink. Arrogant asshole turns out to be the guy hiring a cleaning lady when she goes for the job.

They start to be nice to each other and Zoe even swallows her pride b/c she needs the money. Something we all do at work, granted, but before too long, well, you can do the math.

And of course her parents die and even though they disowned their children, Zoe still inherits half a million dollars? OK...

Why I didn't like this: story was OK, but the insta-love between Zoe and the man whore is sick. He eventually confesses he "can't have a real relationship" b/c of his condition (can't be in the sun due to a rare disease) and his job (he and his friends hunt down child molesters - sometimes outside the law). Not that I don't agree with that, but at what age is it OK to use girls? Up until they're 18 they're off limits, but after that you can treat them like whores to discard?

How about setting up an organization to catch rapist of adults, too? Thousands of women are raped by men every day. Why not worry about them? Oh no, adult women are whores and should be treated as such, right?

Landon picks up chick after chick and rationalizes it away. Way to disrespect yourself asshole.

I'm sick and tired of women being called 'easy' by men who are nothing BUT easy! The hypocrisy is sickening!

And Zoe is suck a weak minded moron she takes him back after he ignores her for 2 weeks?! Grow a fucking spine.

And as soon as Zoe jokes about him giving orders and controls 'inside the bedroom maybe' and Landon comes back with "not just inside the bedroom", I was done.
70% in and I'd had enough. Why oh why oh why can't I read about a Dominant woman who gives the orders? I'm OVER the caveman/ownership/overly "manly", have-to-be-in-control-because-I'm-a-man type asshole. Knock it off already.

This book was absolutely brilliant, it will definitely leave a print on your heart that will stay with you forever... I know it has mine!!!
Landon doesn't do relationships, only one night and move on. He is part of an organization called 'In Safe Hands'... I won't tell you what they do as i don't want to ruin story!!! What i will say is... There are secrets, alot of them and i was gob smacked and emotional when they were revealed!!!
Zoe has her 16 year old brother living with her, and is job hunting. When she applies for a new job, she gets a huge shock!!!
When Zoe shows up in his life... For the first time ever... Landon wants more... But can she handle the truth?
As secrets unfold... Can she handle what she's told? Or will it all be over before it's had a chance to begin?
This book really has touched me deeply in everyway from the problems that the characters came up against, to the mind blowing energy between them. I was compleately pulled into the book, and was right from the very first page!!!
A huge 5 stars from me... And i truly can't wait to discover what Ms Shade has planned for the next in series... But whatever it is... Is going to be mind blowing!!!

Just okay

I have never read a book by S.M. Shade. I really wanted to like it but it just didn't hold up to my expectations. It wasn't terrible but it felt rushed during the good parts and drug out during the boring parts. I even started skipping some of the narration because it became redundant.

1.5⭐️s. Very broken writing style. Places and days jumped paragraph to paragraph. There were some good ideas happening, but just to much for 1 storyline. XP disease, car accidents, pedophiles, tornados, poor to rich, vigilantes, just too much.

Landon has an interesting genetic condition, but that's about all I can say for this book. There really is no character development, they stay pretty much the same through the book unless you count inheriting money. I just thought this was quite dull compared to others books I've read by this author. I won't be continuing to read this series.
This has sexual content

Landon is the first standalone in the new In Safe Hand’s series by S.M. Shade. I have read many of her previous books and I always enjoy her stories. The highlight of Landon for me was the heroine, Zoe. She left her evangelical parents as soon as she could and has been surviving on her own until her gay brother gets kicked out at just 15. Even though she is struggling to survive while in college she never hesitates to take him in. She is admirable and strong. When Landon comes on too strong when she meets him at the club she doesn’t do what so many women in romance novels do, which is fall for the overly sexualized one liner. Instead she high tails it out of there and grabs a cab home. She never expect to walk into a job interview for a house keeping position only to find him as her new boss. But he is full of secrets and not ready to share.

‘He completely devastates me with just one kiss, and the smug grin on his lips when we break apart says he knows exactly how he affected me.’

Overall, this was a good start to a sexy and suspenseful new series. I really enjoyed these two characters and I am very much intrigued by the other characters who have been introduced to us, especially Justus. I did find a few parts rushed and the story got a bit darker than I was expecting but neither hindered my ability to thoroughly enjoy the book. Landon was all alpha male, just like I like them! Him and Zoe meshed wonderfully and together they sparked.

Another great read by Ms. Shade
Not conforming to their parents religious beliefs and those of their church Zoe is placed in foster care and once Ethan comes out that he is gay he too finds himself being disowned by their parents. Zoe and Ethan end up in a homeless shelter that helps them get on their feet. They live day by day – Zoe has given up on her dreams of attending college to take care of her brother. She finds herself unemployed after refusing the advances of her boss and starts looking for her next job when she comes upon a job listing to be a maid/housecleaner for single man, Landon. He has had a difficult life but has managed to make the most of it. It has a rare disease as well as an unusual job that keeps him from any long term relationships. But the attraction between Zoe and Landon is strong but is it strong enough to overcome all the secrets that Landon has? Landon has some insecurities and breaks things off with Zoe only to regret it. Zoe's life turns around financially after the death of her parents she is able to get a nice house in a nice neighborhood, afford to attend college and put money away for her brother's college. This was a great story and I was able to finish it in one day. I became so involved with the characters that I could not put the book down.

Zoe and Landon both have some difficult-to-deal-with life issues. Zoe is the caretaker of her little brother and Landon has a medical condition, which is why in part he doesn't date other than being a man-ho. That is until he meets Zoe. I loved how their relationship developed and the ways they eventually were able to be supportive of each other. There are definitely some potential triggers for some people.

Love SM Shade. Love. Didn't love this. I went in semi blind(bc I had no clue WHY there was an entire series that I've never read)

Here's the thing. Solid-ish characters, funny nano moments but a lot of suspend belief required. Too many "uh huh sure, that would def work out like that" things. But if you just go with it, ignore the unrealistic stuff... well. An annoying amount of development is off page too(with weird irrelevant stuff, like the mini tension with their former church) taking up space. It better become relevant in later books, otherwise it truly was just random garbage.

I didn't even realize Zoe had worked "for months" until it's actually stated. Pretty sure it was because of the development between Landon and Zoe that followed, and not because it even pretend happened.

Frannie, the best friend disappears like 3 mentions in, until near the end. And Ethan. He's what? 15? 16? He's constantly (and conveniently) on a field trip/at a friend's house/going somewhere so Zoe can do whatever/whenever. And then at the end says he got early admission to college. Uh. He was home schooled(not quality), homeless(delayed education more), put into public school(yikes). He's maybe a junior? More like a sophomore? But sure. We can pretend that tracks. He's going to college in the fall. Maybe by then he'll be 16 and can get his license.

I don't want to 2 star it. But. It's fair. I could rant SO much more

ps- why is this the ONLY one of the series not included in KindleUnlimited? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? Lure me in with book 1 so I end up buying the rest? I bought it, but much like the book itself- that's some illogical nonsense.

Good book

This book is entertaining for sure. The only part I hated was the girl in his house he slept with then Zoe comes in to work there and sees her and knows they have sex then not even a few hours later they are making out and he is using his *fingers* on her and I'm thinking I hope he washed those from the last girl a few hours ago, gross. Also wondered later if he was going to screw that girl from the bar later after he and Zoe broke up after only 2weeks. This book has drama and sex and romance.

Landon is the first book in the new In Safe Hands series, from SM Shade. Though not connected, characters from the first series, Striking Back, do appear in this book. It's is not, however, essential to have read the Striking Back series (although I highly recommend it).

Landon is a great character. With so much going on in his life, there's no time for relationships and that's just how he wants it. He does not do relationships.

Zoe is struggling to get by. Supporting her younger brother and putting herself through collage, she takes a job and meets Landon.

I've got to admit that one of the things I loved most about the previous series from this author, is her ability to create such intimacy between the characters and sorely I felt this was missing in this book. I didn't feel an intense build up between Landon and Zoe and as a result, I found it slightly flat.

That being said, the camaraderie between all the characters is fantastic. The brotherly solidarity is heartwarming. There's plenty of drama and action in this story and the sub-characters are great! There's a particular sub-character that's caught my eye and I'm hoping for his story next.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and I'm sure you will too.

I always enjoy Shade’s writing style, because she give you meaning, she gives you emotions. And once again she did it to me. I love the plot, the new characters, and the reasons to write that kind of books. Landon and Zoe’s story is my heart, the passion, the beauty the ugly just everything. Landon is the man!!!! I just loved it more and more. And the Reed brothers are swooning again!!!! I highly recommend this book and this beautiful and brilliant story. Once again hands down!!!!!

I was provided and ARC in exchange for an honest review
