In a wild escape to avoid becoming the sixth victim of the elusive Rocky Mountain Murderer, twenty-two-year-old Riley Dale finds herself flung into a universe parallel to her own, where Las Vegas is known for its churches, terrorist attacks are initiated by the United States, and peace can be found in the darkest corners of the globe.
As the deadly visions that have haunted her since childhood become real, Riley is confronted with the implausible story of a world split in two and the stark contrast between good and evil in people she thought she knew.
Racing deeper into the mystery of the new world, Riley discovers the explosive truth about her ancestors who have been hunted for thousands of years because of a single mistake made long ago.
And now it’s her turn to pay for that blunder.
Pursued by both the government and a clandestine sect of assassins, Riley must ally with the only people in the parallel universe willing to keep her safe—the drug-addicted, prostituting other half of her soul, and the counter soul of a man who tortured and killed five young women.
R.S. Dabney’s passion for reading, writing, and exploring thrilling stories about unlikely heroes conquering evil started at a young age, culminating in the completion of her first two novels, The Soul Mender, book one in The Soul Mender Trilogy, and The Peace Keeper. Her favorite books span every genre and she likes to describe her own work as having something for everyone—a sprinkle of suspense, a dash of adventure, and a whole lot of good versus evil.
R.S. grew up running around the red rocks and ravines in the deserts of southern Utah, building forts, fighting battles, and living the lives of all the characters she and her friends created. An avid lover of all things nature and the outdoors, R. S. attended Texas A&M University where she majored in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and minored in Park and Natural Resource Management. She worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for three years before leaving to pursue her dream of writing a novel.
She currently lives in the Big Bend region of Texas with her husband, two dogs, and cat. When she isn’t lost in another dimension creating havoc for her characters and stories, she enjoys mountain biking, exploring the desert, and eating way too much Mexican food.
What an intriguing concept! I saw the description (and cover) for this darkly fanciful tale and was immediately curious – and the book delivered as promised…
The story is original and the characters are too – original and human and relatable, which is saying something given the construct of the story. There are some truly thought-provoking quotes and moments; the idea of universal balance presented here is a novel way to approach the ideas of good and evil and makes for some surprisingly unnerving moments. The author is original in descriptions and adept with language (“The American had evil eyes and teeth”) and works a lot of simple yet profound truths into the narrative without seeming to proselytize or nag (“It’s a strange thing, realizing there’s a second story to each book”; “Just because I’m not a saint doesn’t make me a monster”; “There’s a fine line between devout and mad”).
There are, admittedly, a handful of spots where things felt entirely too perfectly coincidental or convenient – where I went “oh come ON!” and rolled my eyes. But that’s only because the rest of the book felt so well-assembled, that these moments felt as though the author thought that taking the time to connect the dots through subtlety would have taken too long, so a hurriedly convenient shortcut was taken. Still, there weren’t that many of these and they were the few spots of tarnish in an otherwise delightful (and delightfully dark) construction. I”m eager to see the next book in the series…
I found the blurb for this book to be quite intriguing. As predicted, it raised many questions in my own thoughts. It seemed that the author had done a lot of research and applied it to her twist to the split of good and evil in applications to an altered view of worlds. The beginning started very slow as the complex groundwork for the plot was being laid. I spent most of the book not know what the first part had to do with the last. However, I enjoyed the insights to the characters and their quests. While I think the author uses unique and lyrical descriptions within the story, there were other parts that felt like a segment had been skipped and left the reader feeling as though things were too perfect or even predictable. As soon as I was hooked on the story , the book drew to a cliffhanger of and ending which was the perfect set up for the next book in the trilogy.
I was given this book in return for an honest review. . I need the rest of this trilogy like I need water. I loved the characters and the story. The idea of a split world where everything is opposite fascinates me beyond belief. This book is something different from anything I have read and I loved it. It was full of every heart racing and eye widening action and drama that had me on the edge of my seat and unable to put the book down. There was so much going on that as soon as I closed the book, finishing the last page I almost flipped to the front and started again.

Oh my goodness. This book has got me twisted into a thousand knots! I don't know what to do with myself, well except start the second book, that's definitely about to happen. There isn't a second where I felt the story dragged and I love how every little piece is part of a puzzle that falls into its place at just the right time. Such an original, well thought out, mind bending story! I have a thousand questions and can't wait to see where this series will take me next! A+++++
I won this book in a giveaway and really enjoyed it! I read it fairly quickly (3 days) because I had to know what was going to happen next! It was full of suspense and kept me on my toes. I will definitely be going out and buying the sequel.
I have a new favorite series!! I am so happy that I found this book through Readers' Favorite- I figured if it won a gold medal, it had to worth a chance...and it exceeded my expectations by far! The premise of the novel is absolutely intriguing. The world as we know it is actually split in half, with each side the opposite of the other and unknowing (for the most part) of the others existence. Each person's personality and morals are opposite in the other world, as well as our politics and the make up of our country. This is such a fantastic plot line- think Las Vegas as the moral haven of our country! Also, think about meeting the other 'half' of yourself... This is what happens to Riley Dale as she stumbles into the split world and finds the counterpart to her shy, straightlaced, good-girl self as a drug-addicted, immoral and deeply troubled look-alike. She needs help to figure out how to get home and put all the pieces of the puzzle together- she had been having visions and nightmares that she never understood- as well as cryptic information from her grandmother that starts to make sense. To top it off, in her 'normal' world, she had faced off with a truly evil serial killer who wants to murder her...whose opposite half in the new world is a handsome hero determined to save her. The author does an amazing job of spinning this tale so that it is completely believable, and the reader is immersed in each moment. She is flawless at changing point of view throughout the book to get a look inside each character's head and make them three dimensional and real. I absolutely could not put this book down and stayed up much too late reading it. I'm thrilled to know that there are 2 more to follow because I don't want this journey to end!
Superbly written, this novel took over my life until I finished it. Multidimensional, literally, with characters that I feel like I know and already miss, this trilogy contains levels of creative mystery that leaves me stunned like stumbling out of a movie into my own life for both the vivid storyline and pointing at a surprising number of facets of humanity. Everything I hate about this book is exactly why we need it. I wish there really was a soul mender.
The concept of a parallel universe, a good soul and an evil soul is both interesting and frightening. I found this book to be disturbing , but I couldn't put it down once I started it. Waiting for the sequel.
A fantastic first novel for R.S. Dabney! I anxiously await number two in this very unique and spellbinding story! She definitely has a winner on her hands!!
I'm usually not into books like this, but it was recommended so I gave it a shot. I started reading the sample before the hardcopy arrived and was immediately sucked in. And now I have to wait for the next book as it is a trilogy.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley for an honest review. There was no compensation and all that follows is my opinion from what I've read.
This book bored me. Plain and simple. The description on the blurb was intriguing and caught my attention. Parallel worlds and a woman being hunted, it sounded awesome. And yet, I was not pulled into the story.
The writing is decent. It has multiple viewpoints early on that confused me. I'm not sure what the point was for the President's viewpoint, a killer's, or a professor's early on. It felt disjointed and an attempt of word count or adding tension when it didn't make sense.
Riley's viewpoint was interesting and most of the book. I liked her "nightmares" and the confusion that followed them. It was a great way to get the reader caught on something big.
The big issue though was the way the story was written. It was more of a tell than a show. When multiple characters are talking, there were no indicators as to what they were doing or facial expressions. I found myself thinking the characters were monotonous robots.
All in all, I wasn't sold on the book. I feel it is a great first or second draft and with a bit more revisions it would be an amazing book. Right now though, I didn't care one way or another for anyone.
This is a non stop psychological ride which will keep you reading and guessing! Definitely not for the faint of heart!!
Now if you can try to imagine that there are two parallel worlds with exactly the same people--but one is bad and the other good. The worlds themselves are different - all backwards kind of. Now try to imagine you were flung into this alternative world and met up with your polar opposite. Like black and white--but were they really? The worst part--if one died in one world--then the other soul died in that other world.
Now try to imagine that everyone you thought was bad was good and that somehow YOU were the one meant to save the world and get it back together. You do have help-----but-----it seems everyone is after you!
Then just as you think you might find out--a cliff hanger and a whopper of one! This is the 1st in a trilogy--with that kind of cliffhanger I think you all will be seeing them on here as well. The Soul Mender
I think the concept for this book was fascinating and incredibly unique. Riley's character goes through an interesting transformation from a organized, straight laced, self-proclaimed "boring" girl to someone who is strong and courageous and able to adapt to crazy situations. I truly enjoyed the premise but I think the execution fell a little flat.
First were the multiple viewpoints. Many of them weren't necessary in moving the story forward. President Cain, Gabe, Zach Snow. Everything that happened in their POVs could have been shown and hinted at through Riley's POV.
I also thought the novel felt a little aimless before Riley discovered her other half. The novel started with no character goal. I didn't understand what Riley wanted, or what she really cared about. There were no stakes involved and so it was hard for me to get invested in Riley's story and to really care about her as a protagonist.
I think this a good start but it has potential to be great with a few tweaks.
I really enjoyed this book, in the end. It was a combination of a few things that I've seen in plenty of other novels, and it was done well. Overall, it was well written and enjoyable. I plan on following this series as it continues.
My main issue with this novel was the entire beginning chunk. The author made a poor attempt at foreshadowing and it didn't carry through very well. What was present was more or less a disjointed stump of mini-plot points that only make sense once you've read through the entire novel. There were a couple times where I needed to flip back through pages in order to remember something that happened in the first pages. I don't think that is a very good thing to happen with a debut novel.
Overall, I enjoyed it and I hope the rest of the series is as intriguing as this one.
Finished, “The World Binder” last night. Wow! Did she pull it all together with finesse or what? And the ‘skills’ progression as a writer along the way is so enjoyable as a reader. Plot, character development (you think?), descriptions, comparisons, dialogues, inner monologues, and HER voice, (message, philosophy, objectivity, perspective, engagement and love), all became seamless. I honestly lost track of the number of times that I would read a passage and then think to myself, ‘Oh, that was well done.’ A phrase that can now encompass the whole trilogy. Well done indeed!
So I met this author at a comic con in town and bought the books for my daughter for when she grows older. R.S. Dabney signed the books for her and it has sat upstairs for about a year. I was looking for my next read and chose this one. This book exceeded all my expectations! I enjoyed it from start to finish and am looking forward to reading the next one. This book had it all, suspense, fantasy, and great characters, just to name a few. Great job!
I won this book here on goodreads. All I can say is WOW!! I started reading not knowing what to expect. I was hooked. Some predictability, but enough twist and turns to make it work. Fantasy, mystery, a touch of sci-fi and romance. When I hit the last 10 chapters I could not put it down - I had to know the ending - only to discover it doesn't end there! I need the rest of the story!!
Fiction, especially speculative fiction, is always more intriguing to me when mixed with pieces of recognizable history. The basic premise of parallel universe is not new, but the author definitely creates a fresh look at society and the good vs. evil existing in today's world. I enjoyed every thought provoking page.
The Soul Mender is gripping, suspenseful, and terrifying. Not in a horror movie kind of way, more like "Imagine if this actually happened" kind of way.
Riley is a good girl. She doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs. She completed college with good grades. She wants to work in environmental sciences. She has terribly vivid dreams and manifests bruises and welts on her skin that come from nowhere. In short, she's scared. She has every reason to be.
There was so much happening in this book. Secret government plots, assassins, a serial killer, and others out to destroy what they feel threatens their power. We see two worlds from multiple points of view. While at times it seemed like too much, other times I wanted more. At one point I was gripping the table in front of me, white knuckled, anticipating what was going to happen next. The suspense had me holding my breath and made my heart speed up, I didn't know who was good and who was bad. Even though we get to see it through many POV's, and they are really well done (I truly felt like I was in a different mind every time it switched), I didn't always know which side they were on.
The supporting characters each had their place in the story and I enjoyed the journey with them. I felt Oz's pain, Zach's malice, and Zach's love (read the book to understand that conundrum).
I remember remarking to a friend that I wasn't sure if this was the brain child of a paranoid schizophrenic or a genius. I can honestly say not many books have made me question my life and the world like this one did. I kept asking myself, "what if?". What if this is how it really was? What if this was the world we lived in? How would we cope?
Though I felt it was drawn out a bit, I think that was mostly so we could really experience what the characters were going through. The writing was a smidge clunky in the beginning but it evened out quite nicely.
In an almost masochistic way, I enjoyed every minute of this book. Be forewarned, it's not concluded with this book. I'm truly anticipating the next chapter in this story, and I can't wait.
At first, I found myself a bit bewildered with the story; there were a lot of random details thrown in that didn't seem to make any sense. However, as soon as Riley moved into her parallel world, everything fell into place. By the end of the novel, I was hooked and I just had to read what happens next. Overall, this novel is fast-paced and has a good storyline. I think that a little more character and plot development in some areas would be beneficial and could elevate the story a bit more, but it was still a solid piece of good work. I liked the way the author broached the subject of two halves of one soul, and I was impressed with the way the other world was created. This novel is definitely gripping and will keep you wanting more, so if you are looking for a new science fiction novel, I would definitely suggest this one!
I received this novel as an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
I've always been fascinated by the concept of parallel universes, but rarely is it executed well in books or movies. This book however, the first in a trilogy, brilliantly set up a very unique parallel world, in which good and evil have seemingly switched places. I also loved the idea that the life of each soul and counter soul was linked, especially since it added such moral ambiguity to Riley's thoughts about each character.
This was action-packed from page one, and I raced through this book with a fierce need to know what was going to happen next. The ending was brutal, and I need the second book NOW!!! I can't wait to find out what happens next.
This started a bit choppy, and there were some technical/layout issues, which I'm assuming will be dealt with once the book is 100% ready for the reading public. With that being said, 'The Soul Mender' is a great dystopian story, featuring two earths in a parallel universe. The author spins a great story, which is creatively highlighted by Judeo-Christian mythology, which I love! I can't say much more, as I don't want to spoil it, but the book has some great characters...and their not-so-great opposites! This is the first of a 3-book saga, and it does end in a cliffhanger. It is interesting enough though, that I'll continue the series.
Received from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
The premise of this book sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately the writing was difficult and uneven, although technically proficient (grammar and spelling were good). Lots of tell and very little show. Parts that I felt should have had more emphasis were vaguely mentioned or glossed over entirely. Although the plot was interesting, I just couldn't get past the writing and had to abandon at 45%.
Off-beat romance with inter-dimensional travel as explained in the cover notes. Well written, well edited, and yet definitely not my cup of tea. I tried hard to like this book but just didn't, I have no reasons or excuses, I just don't like it.
An intriguing premiss overall overall, I am interested to see what happens. The ending definitely made you wanting more. I am looking forward to the next installment.
