😂4 LOL!! STARS 😂

No Spoilers!

Oh WOW! This book is so different than your usual thriller. There are lots of LOL moments. Oh my gosh! Its been awhile since I read a thriller that made me laugh so much. Laughter is the best medicine and this book will give you plenty of it. How many times have you read a thriller that gave you the unsettling feeling after reading it? Well this one gives you a good feeling after reading it. It still has lots and lots of suspense and it can get intense. This book is so different than other thrillers.

Just imagine a group of retired cops who live in a retirement home and get together to stop crime and get the bad guys off the street. They have their own techniques to stop crime and some of them are just so unbelievable. I couldn't believe some of the things they did. What an imagination that this author has. It will definitely make you laugh. "The Geezers have gone rogue".

So grab your walker, secure your catheter, and make sure there is double adhesive on your dentures. Then hang on for dear life because you are about to ride along with the covert senior squad-a bunch of elderly cops who refuse to stop catching crooks.

I loved the writing style and I thought the characters were done so well.

If this title and this review hasn t made you laugh yet then read this book. It definitely will. I am just not so funny as this author.

I want to thank Chris Legrow for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Just wanted to give you an update. I just found out that this is going to be a series.
I can't wait to read the second book.

Oh my goodness, it is so refreshing to read a book that is not only original and inventive, but incredibly entertaining. Set in Nebraska, crime is on the rise, a new warlord seems to have power over the other Sudanese, murder and intimidation are his weapons. A group of wealthy men and women come up with a unique solution, using elderly police in a most unusual way. Love that this book features the elderly, showing that one may be broken down in body, but still useful to society, strong in mind. Using talents they learned from years protecting the public, walking the streets.

This book is so much fun, I laughed often while reading, and some of the visuals created by the written scenes are beyond priceless. These old cops use some unusual weapons, some quite nasty. The way they work together, protect each other is commendable. I fell in love with these characters, old men and young alike.

So call this a spoof, a caper, a free for all, any will fit, but regardless this is well worth reading. I wish a system like this actually existed, a place where one doesn't just grow older and pass away, but can use their talents in a unique way until the end. I hope there will be a further episode featuring these old blues, I can use all the humor I can get. Well done, Mr. .LeGrow

"I've been roped in with a bunch of crazy piddle-pack-throwing, geriatric crime-fighting geezers..."

They have the experience. They have the skills. They have...catheters and dentures?

These retired police officers may have one foot in the grave, but as they say:

"Don't get all sappy on me...I'm not dead yet."

The public knows that mysterious (and wealthy) Bureau funds a unique retirement home for police officers in Nebraska.

Only a select few know its true purpose - aiding and arming the old folks to help them take down the local crime bosses.

"These old cops can do things the current officers can't. They can conduct surveillance, obtain evidence, and walk right up to gang members, criminals, and not even be noticed."

From domestic disputes to a string of robberies, the retired officers are ready and rearing to go. And, they are about to go up against their worst enemy yet.

Clubba, a Sudanese gang leader, has rapidly taken over the streets. He's poised to unite the local gangs and create an empire. He revels in the terror a he strikes into the hearts of the locals.

Not anymore.

Not while these old folks are still kicking.

Armed with nothing but their walkers, canes and water balloons filled with...(read the book to find that one out) these old geezers are taking on all the neighborhood punks and hoodlums. After all,

"Nobody notices the little old men in the parks..."

This was an absolute delight to read - I knew I would love it from the moment I saw the cover.

The cast of characters was large but unique - I enjoyed getting to know all the retired cops and watch them masterfully manipulate the criminals.

That being said, it almost felt like things were too easy for the old cops at times. They had basically unlimited resources and from Day 1, everything ran smoothly on their end.

I want my characters to struggle more. It makes the climax so much more rewarding (for me as a reader) when I can tell that the characters really, truly had to fight to get there.

Other than that - truly enjoyed this one.

"There are old folks everywhere around here. Watch out."

P.s. I absolutely loved these chapter titles. Made me smile every time.

4, 'the geezers have gone rouge' stars!!!

Full review featured on my blog Recipe & a Read! Thank you to Chris LeGrow for signing and sending me a copy of his book!

“Ol’ Blues” are officers that the *youths* on the force might think are outdated, with one foot in the grave and little to contribute. However, they also have extensive knowledge, experience and expertise they’ve been honing for many years that can be invaluable to solving a crime. Enter Ben Mitchell. Ben see’s the value in these Ol’ Blues and with a team of wealthy benefactors, he’s got money to burn and an idea to hatch.

These old cops can do things the current officers can’t. They can conduct surveillance, obtain evidence, and walk right up to gang members, criminals, and not even be noticed.

There’s little more innocuous than a cute little old man ambling about the park. With this idea Ben decides to put these men to good use. By creating a retirement home, fashioned after old school police stations and implementing retired police officers he breathes new life into our cast of characters along with new information to solve an ever growing crime problem in Omaha, Nebraska.

Enter Clubba: a Sudanese gang leader with a penchant for violence and terror. In an effort to keep the community quiet he’s dealing out lessons in silence using force, fear and death. He’s ready to unite gangs and rule the territory like a savage King. The only thing Clubba didn’t take into account? The old geezers that no one was paying attention to in the park – they’re here, they’ve been listening and they’re ready.

All those years as a cop gave him a constant sense of curiosity that never went away. Anytime he found something suspicious, he had to check it out. He hated that in the blink of an eye, he’d gotten old. His body betrayed him at every turn, especially recently. There was, however, one advantage that came with advancing age. It gave him an edge he had never possessed before.

If I had to sum up how I felt reading this book in two words they would be: refreshing and delightful. If you’ve been following my reviews you know I went on a bit of a mystery / thriller binge with quite a few police procedural drama’s thrown in there. While I love the thriller genre as a whole, the police procedural novels are generally a little bit slower and less enticing for me. However, that was absolutely not the case with Senile Squad. When I first read the synopsis of this book I was immediately taken in by the unique vision of the plot. There’s something so effortlessly charming about the idea of retired police officers dolling out vigilante justice and revitalizing their lives to their former glory. Well, LeGrow delivered charm, wit and a solid story line in spades.

…"but I want to point out that these men not only assisted local law enforcement with community relations, but they solved several major crime sprees. A lot of criminals are behind bars – or on their way – because of the efforts of these Ol’ Blues.”

While this was a funny, charming, light and entertaining read what took me by surprise was the subtle depth and meaning that underlies the story once you get to the end. I wont give away any spoilers but this book really has so much going for it. There are times when I was literally laughing out loud and other times that ultimately left me pondering life and the importance of having something in it that makes you feel alive.

In the end, you will have to suspend some reality to get into this one but that’s pretty par for the course in fiction. This was a fun, well paced and wholly original book and I’ve read nothing quite like it… well, ever. Sometimes, at the end of the year I fall into a bit of a slump getting through books and Senile Squad was just what I needed to pull me out of that!

The Old Blues have gone rogue!!!

Equal parts cozy mystery, police thriller and comedy, Senile Squad: Adventures of the Old Blues is an enjoyable ride through the streets of Omaha with the wackiest bunch of retirees around! The premise of this story was completely unique and so much fun.

What happens when policemen retire? Set out to pasture before they are mentally ready, this set of lovable Seniors has the opportunity to continue serving and protecting their community, and that's exactly what they do, in often dirty & hilarious ways.

When a group of high profile citizens, nicknamed The Bureau, come up with an idea to assist the local police force by creating a 'retirement' home for Senior Citizen police officers, they just plan to run secret undercover ops and send along tips to the necessary police units.

What ends up happening is so much more than that. Energized with the renewed sense of 'being needed' and 'serving a purpose' the retired Officers end up giving more than was ever anticipated.

The main plot revolves around a ruthless gang leader who uses brute force and extreme violence to solidify his reign over the local neighborhoods.

The Old Blues, sick of his bullshit, pull out all the stops to clean up their streets and make them safe again. These old men are often underestimated and they use that to their advantage.

Flying under the radar, relying on their many years of experience, they're able to infiltrate neighborhoods and gather intel that regular Officers would never be able to obtain.

Was this book perfect?

Was this story super entertaining?

Many times in my life I have traveled I-80 across the US. When you reach Omaha, you don't see much of the city as you pass to the south of it. For me, it was always just a welcome break from hundreds of miles of corn and ranch land. It is cool to finally get to read a book set there. It sounds like it might be just as hardcore as some of the big cities!

I will admit that when I first heard about Senile Squad, I was skeptical. A nursing home of retired police officers fighting crime - sounded like a good chance it would end up being silly, and not necessarily in a good way. Boy, was I wrong! It is very humorous, but not ridiculous. At times it is also action packed and heart warming. And, on top of it all it is very well written and kept me engaged the whole time.

I feel like if you enjoy police drama with a little Andy Griffith/Columbo tongue-in-cheek humor, this book will be right up your alley. The author served for quite some time as a police officer in Omaha, so I feel confident the content regarding police procedure is pretty close to true (even if exaggerated at times). So, if you are a current or former police officer, don't pass this book by!

Thank you to author Chris LeGrow for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised and it exceeded my expectations. And, Officer LeGrow, sorry it took so long for me to get to it!

It was ok.
The Ol' Blues are at it again. Armed with walkers and canes and a bit of high-tech to bring down the bad guy and save the day! As the book tagline states "The geezers have gone rogue."
This was a very typical cops and robbers story with the senior citizens as a twist. The characters are very cliche however I feel that the author may have done this on purpose to give the reader the feeling of an old friend coming into play in the story.
I don't really care for the author's writing style. it may have been the premise of the book as cops and robbers is not really my thing but I also really think that it's because she was indeed a police officer himself. And while I believe that anyone can write a book, I also know that it does take a particular amount of talent to write an interesting book. This one was definitely not fireworks but more of a light drizzle.
The premise of the story does have great potential however. And if this were to become a series I feel that if the author were to work a little bit on his writing style and improving his skills that this would become a hit series!
I did also find the book very funny. The anecdotes that were put in while not written in the best way come across as they are supposed to and are very humorous. I do praise the author for that. It is difficult for me to laugh at a book and I did at this one. So bravo Chris! 👏🏻
With all things in mind this book was an okay read so I am giving it an okay review. There is definitely room for improvement here. But that just means the book has more potential as does any sequels that may be in mind.

Wow - what a read! This book works on so many levels: it is a comical look at how we adjust to retirement. But under the surface it is also asking very deep questions. The 'Ol' Blues' have a way of doing things that may seem outdated - but when a brutal Sudanese kingpin starts to rule the neighborhood by fear is their way the right way to address this problem? Chris LeGrow has slyly hidden many 'policing' question as threads as he weaves this engaging story of crime and lack of punishment into a tapestry of the role of policing in our society. As a police officer he has a nuanced eye that gives this work a unique vision - highly recommended.

Note: I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

This book took me quite some time to finish. There were some laugh out loud moments, that’s for certain. But the gang, side crime boys felt a bit laggy to me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just didn’t have that pull or desire to keep reading. 😬 With that said, I think people who greatly enjoy crime novels (ie. not really me) may really enjoy this book. 👍

Senile Squad: Adventures of the Old Blues by Chris LeGrow is the first book that I have read by this author.

A group of wealthy business people decide to fund a retirement home for retired cops in Omaha, Nebraska. However, this is not just any retirement home. The Ol' Blues are being equipped to not only work with the community, but to help fight street crime. I won't go into more details due to spoilers.

This book is well-written and shows the importance of finding something to make us feel productive and useful when we retire. It is imaginative and well-executed. There are some very humorous and uplifting moments in this book, but there are also some very tense, sad, and disturbing scenes as well. I also believe it helped the book in that the author is a Detective with the Omaha Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

The characters are well developed and a variety of themes occur within the book including theft, gangs, murder, feeling useful, and even some romance. This book was entertaining with some laugh out loud moments as well as the more serious aspects of a thriller.

I highly recommend this fast paced book and I sincerely hope that there are other books coming in this series.

Frankly this audiobook was an unfortunate choice by me with only a few days left in the Reading Challenge. The plot/story line was corny and pretty much unbelievable. The writing was that of an inexperienced amateur and the “acting” style of narration was annoying, distracting and simply didn’t work. If this book had not been the second last book required for me to achieve my Reading Challenge target, it would have been DNF after the first hour or so.

From the book blurb --
Grab your walker, secure your catheter, and make sure there’s double adhesive on your dentures!
Then hang on for dear life because you are about to ride along with the covert Senile Squad—a bunch of elderly cops who refuse to stop catching crooks. Fighting street crime the old-fashioned way is their modus operandi. The Ol’ Blues, led by their cigar-chewing Sarge, bring justice back to the streets of Omaha by taking down a brutal Sudanese kingpin who thinks he’s a powerful gang lord. Crime fighting has never been so funny or effective when seasoned cops armed only with walkers, canes, and wheelchairs (and some gross tactics) take back the streets.

How could I not choose to read this book after that introduction?

A bunch of millionaires call themselves The Bureau. They see how valuable these old retired cops can be in fighting local crime. They put together a retirement home strictly for retired cops, complete with 24-hour nurses and doctors. As you enter the facility, one would swear it’s a police station .. complete with some residents wearing uniforms. Of course, that’s what you see when they are sitting. As they stand up, you find the uniform ends at the waist, and the bottoms are hospital gowns … usually open in the back.

The floors below the facility is where the real work takes place. Only a few people know what these guys actually do. They can follow drug lords without anyone knowing. You look, you only see two old men playing chess across the street … or hobbling down the sidewalk using a cane .. or wheelchair. What you don’t see are the weapons embedded in the canes … the wheelchairs. And they have a special weapon guaranteed to stop a bad guy in his tracks. They are small balloons filled with .. well, read the book.

And the old guys are loving every minute of it!

This is a very well-written book guaranteed to make you chuckle at these wonderful old cops. Besides giving them all a reason to go on living and feeling like productive men again, they are ridding the streets of crime, which up to now has been increasing and getting more violent.
The cops are all finely drawn .. their personalities all different, but yet not. They’ve all spent most of their lives serving and protecting and old age doesn’t seem to slow them down at all.

This was a joy to read! Many thanks to the author / Conclerge Marketing / CL1557 Publishing LLC / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Wow so many 4 and 5 star reviews. Three stars from me is still a good book. Actually I loved the premise. I thought the story line was great and had a lot of potential. A bunch of retired cops (ol’ blues) in a purpose built retirement home continue to fight crime the old fashioned way - with lots of new gadgets too. Set in Omaha, a young and violent Sudanese man has plans to become a ‘warlord’ like back home in Sudan. With the help of the ol’ blues he is sent to prison for assault. But his time in prison is spent getting cosy with all the different gangs and trying to raise an ‘army’ to do his bidding. Due for release shortly, he doesn’t count on the relentless group of old cops who are determined to get him off the streets.

Unfortunately I thought the delivery was a bit cliched and the dialogue was very cheesy at times. It was supposed to be humorous and I did have a few chuckles but it’s very hard to impress me with humour. I thought the author’s efforts were too heavy-handed. Also the old guys had a secret research facility that turned out weaponised walking aids (like walkers packing twin tasers). That was all a bit James Bond. Nevertheless, because I thought the premise was outstanding I would certainly read a sequel and hope that Mr. LeGray has honed his craft a bit more because I think it could be an excellent series. Certainly very different.

Man, what an absolute delight! I loved this story from beginning to end. Growing up I was an Andy Griffith/Matlock fan and I could totally see him in this setting. The premise/summary makes it sound like it could be ridiculous and silly, but seriously, the author does a great job telling this story and weaving together action, excitement, detective work, heartwarming moments, and lots of humor. Many thanks to Matt for recommending this book!

This is not my usual choice of books. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The premise and plot was unique. I loved the idea of elderly, retired cops showing their chops and being seen as useful not a nussiance. The story was fast paced and I laughed out loud throughout the whole book. I wish Smitty, Tiny, or the Sarge were my family members. They reminded me of loveable, grumpy old men. I highly recommend this book. Completely entertaining.

STORY LINE:

A retirement home for retired police officers with a secret mission is a startling new idea. When a group of millionaires, AKA the Bureau, decide to fund a retirement home for old police officers having a hidden agenda, the fun is just beginning. Get ready for false teeth, catheters, diapers, hospital gowns without backs paired with uniform shirts, and secret weapons in every conceivable piece of handicap equipment.

The Ol’ Blues are not ready for the nursing home! Far from it, they have a wealth of experience that could be beneficial to local law enforcement. With the Bureaus funding and backing, and the experience of the Ol’ Blue, law enforcement will not know what has hit them.

Come along with Sarge and the gang as they fight crime and take down a Sudanese Kingpin.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Author Chris Legrow as a retired law enforcement officer adds reality to this book. His insight into criminal investigation was evident in his writing. The character development of the villains and the Ol’ Blue was skillful and progressive throughout the story-line. I found I could feel the evil of the villains and the camaraderie of the Ol’ Blues.

The plotting of the book was easy to follow and interesting as Mr. Legrow’s insight into the criminal world was clear in the story-line. I found his writing style was clean and clear and the story-line original.

This is a hilarious story of seniors that are ready and willing to still fight the good fight against crime with advance and innovative equipment provided by the millionaires.

RECOMMENDATION: 4 STARS

I found this book highly entertaining and would recommend it to anyone that like a funny well-written and solid story-line.

I received this book from Netgalley.com in return for an honest book review. Book reviews of any novel are dependent on the book review author’s opinion; all book reviews on line, under my name, and on my blog are my opinion.

Loved it!!

I loved this book! So often, and sadly, the elderly are simply not seen, because of their age. But think of the knowledge and wisdom they have! This book was gripping, thoughtful, funny, and makes you think. Read it...you won't be disappointed.

What a smashing idea!

I love stories that emphasize that just because one may be old... it doesn't mean they're dead or useless.

Truthfully, I can't vouch for the elements of the foundation being realistic or not. The part that makes it all possible. Honestly? It doesn't matter for this book.

It's got a bit of a screwball feel but it's not a farce. Maybe the foundation is a bit thin on realism but who cares. Let the fun times roll.

A secret coalition of CEOs and other big monied folks, who style themselves as the Bureau, turning the retired but not yet dead police force into a secret crime fighting agency that operates independently of government agency. The latter reclaiming the derogatory nick, the Ol' Blues, from the new punks in blue,  as their name.

Which is a thing of brilliance.  Who sees the old folks? Certainly not young thugs and criminal masterminds.

They may be old but they're not dead and have wicked skills and experience that technology can't replace.

At 25% in the book, it was already a definite 4 star read. And it went up to 4.5 stars and earned a round up for the original concept.

As one would expect, a bunch of retired cops, regardless of their physical conditions, whole heartedly get on board with this and are very eager to participate in any way they can.

I can't quote directly as I had an ARC version which is not a final copy of the book but one of my favorite bits was the comment by one of the doctors about the "retirees" considering themselves officers. Instead of the "patients" they are in the retirement facility.

One recounts a particularly frustrating moment of entering the re-created police station to retrieve a patient only to be told that he was unavailable. Would he like to see another officer about his issue?

TOO FUNNY!

The crimes are very real though. For all that its fun to see a bunch of stubborn and proud cops return to their life calling, the need for their help is not treated lightly.

In no way can this be considered a "cozy mystery". It's also not hard boiled crime novel. Nor is it a full on screwball comedy like Dragnet or Police Academy.

It really stands in its own corner. Daring anyone to try and pigeon hole it.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys crime novels and or stories celebrating senior citizens still living life.

I'm adding this to my list of favorite series to follow. When is the next book coming out???

Thank you to the publisher for the free copy of this book in exchange for this honest review.

Reading The Adventures of Old Blues: Senile Squad by Chris Legrow was a love/hate situation for me. First of all, the title is too long.

One thing that I love is that the idea of the retirement home for the old police in Nebraska. I had recently seen a story on the Internet about making a safe retirement village for people who grew up in the 1950s. The tiny houses and grouped in an indoor village with all furniture typical of that time. In this book, some planners created a work space that seemed right out the 1950s complete with chalkboards, old electric fan, rotary telephones and old typewriters. That turned out to be sort of a front for using old retired people from the police department to fight crime. The old police personnel who had not wanted to retire and loved their job with gusto were all quirky and loveable characters.

Another thing that I love about this book is learning about parts of history that I was not aware of. From 2002 to 2003 there was a large resettlement of Sudanese refugees in Omaha and Lincoln. Can you imagine the enormous differences? The culture is extremely different from Sudan. In this story, a Sudanese King Pin was terrorizing his fellow Sudanese refugees. So not only were the refugees having to adjust in such a foreign land but they had to deal but they had to survive Sudanese gangs and dangerous men like Clubba the Kingpin. For me, this book could take on a much more serious turn. So I had mixed feelings about this story.

There are some parts of the book that made me laugh uncontrollably however as the story went on and I read the ending, I felt sad.

I received this book as win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in this review.

I really enjoyed this book. I saw that Chris LeGrow is a retired police officer from the Omaha area and it's now easy to see why the story flowed so well and I felt like I could see the store on the corner and the empty fields. The blurbs on this book are a perfect description for the story that's inside.

I'm hoping that this is book one of many and I'd love to see a movie or tv series, the story is a perfect vehicle for some older actors to recreate the humor and friendships these characters embrace.

This I'd one of the best reads I've had in a long time. Font let the title fool you into thinking its a cozy-- its not. Intelligent and funny the way a cop's humor is.. My dad was a street cop which may be why I understood and respect the author's creation of the old blues. Every situation, every character is well planned and well voiced. No stupidity or pandering. I look forward to the next book in, what I hope, is a series.
FYI there is a TV show Old Tricks on Huku you may enjoy. Simikiar idea but very different in execution.

A hilarious tale of epic proportions.
I started reading this book and it looked interesting, but a few chapters in I was literally on the floor with tears down my cheeks from the overly funny situation presented by these old cops armed with unique and infallible weapons against deadly criminals.
This is a fantastic story, with a nice view of elderly people and the way they can still teach us a thing or two about life.
Note: I received an ARC from Netgalley for review purposes and an honest and unbiased opinion.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Concierge Marketing Inc for a review copy of Senile Squad, a whole new take on the New Tricks concept.

A group of benevolent millionaires in Omaha decide to give the local police force a helping hand by utilising the skills of older, retired officers. To this end they set up a nursing home for retired officers with a recreated squad room and special hospital gowns (uniform on the top half, hospital gown on the bottom). Hidden from sight and the staff is a state of the art lab and supply room. In their initial foray into surreptitious crime solving the team manage to take down a wannabe Sudanese warlord.

I wasn't very sure of this novel initially as it all seems very American - why would a bunch of rich guys want to spend so much money on something that doesn't benefit them directly? - where the culture of giving is more apparent. It is also written as a "straight" novel with no irony and a lot of juvenile humour. So I thought 3 stars and that would be it but as I read on I found myself absorbed in the plot, laughing at the humour and rooting for the Ol' Blues as they style themselves.

Once you're past the initial setup info and the boys swing into action this novel is a hoot. From walkers that fire pepper spray to crutches that fire beanbag bullets via flying filled urine bags the squad are armed and dangerous (to villains). Some of their diversionary tactics to distract attention from their activities had me laughing out loud. They also have the brains and experience to outwit their targets.

It is also very pleasant to read a novel which treats the retired as smart, resourceful people with a wealth of experience. Too often you read retired in a novel and translate it as infirm and useless.

If you want a clean, fun read then I can heartily recommend Senile Squad.

I liked the senile squad on a number of levels. Being from Omaha, it was nice reading a book set in the city. I liked the idea of retired policemen (I don't think they had retired policewomen involved) helping fight crime without the active police force knowing it. The idea of wealthy citizens acting behind the scenes was quite reasonable. I really liked the ending, including the mother of the dead killer telling the press her son was getting his life in order (even though he just clubbed an old man to death). That seems to be the comment whenever someone is killed by the police, or killed in a drug deal gone bad. The main story line, about a Sudanese crime lord, was very interesting. Side stories, about a long time prisoner, a wife beater, the police chief and his public affairs officer were also interesting. While the cute love story seemed a little too perfect, the details of facility the old cops stayed in seemed over the top (kind of like the bat cave) and they never showed a retired cop living the good life off their rather large pensions, overall the story was quite good. One thing I didn't really understand why the medical staff running the facility, who had no idea the retired cops were fighting crime, made them wear hospital gowns. In nursing homes I have visited the clients wear normal clothes. A good book.
