The third and final book in the Lions of Pride Island series!
Axel Hunt knows what’s expected from him in life. Find a mate that’s suitable to the oracle, mate her, and rule his country, ensuring peace. But all of that is turned upside down when curvy Lucy comes into his life, drawing his attention as never before. Only problem? She’s his secretary.
Lucy has never planned to put down roots or settle down. She enjoys the single life and her work, and her sketchy family history don’t give her a lot of hope that the right man would give her a chance. But when she meets Axel Hunt, she realizes two things. First, he’s hot and makes her feel all kinds of things she never expected to feel. Second, he’s hopeless with women and has no chance of winning over a mate when one is picked for him. With only a small ulterior motive, she proposes a win win situation. Date her, just for pretend, and learn how to woo a woman.
But when a make believe relationship turns into real feelings on both sides, how will Axel and Lucy reconcile their love with the needs of a nation? And can the fight the dangers lying ahead?
Terry is the author of over forty bestselling shifter romances. She spends her spare time dreaming of dragons, playing with her pets, and watching sunsets from her home in the mountains alongside her husband (who she suspects would make a great bear shifter). She loves the wild outdoors, her fans, all readers, and getting lost in a great book.

I knew Terry wouldn’t let me down. She knows her stuff and when she writes, she writes from the heart. “Protector of the Pride” just happens to be a very good book that makes you laugh, sad (king too busy to court women), excited, you get flustered (the sex…OMG), and of course there is the wanting to jump in book and WHOOP ASS!!! When a book makes you feel then you know the author has done her job!! The story-line and the characters all worked perfectly together. Even the minor characters did their jobs as they were supposed to. I think one of my favorite parts in this book is where Axel is asking for help with dressing for his dinner he cooks for Lucy. I laughed till I cried at their conversation over this. You’ll have to read the book to understand how funny that was. This is a book that be recommended to mature readers over the age of 18 because of the explicit sex (SO GOOD). Can be read as a standalone book, but to me it is better to read after you have read the first two.
Axel Hunt is a lion shifter, a king, and unmated. He had to take over as King to Pride Island when his father was killed, and he was barely old enough to take over ruling Pride Island. He is waiting for the Oracle to tell him who his fated mate is. He knows that as king his has to run his country and ensure that he keeps the peace among the shifters. He has one problem though, his new secretary, Lucy! She has things hard for him because she makes want her. He wants her really bad and his heart keeps telling him she is his mate, yet the Oracle hasn’t told him who his mate is yet. His other problem is that he has not had time to date in such a long time he is actually expecting the mate the Oracle choses for him to just jump right into her new position without any wooing and courting.
Lucy is Axel’s new secretary, and she was sent by the Oracle to help him out. She is so efficient in her job that Axel actually delegates some of the Pride business to her. Lucy only took the job as a temporary one because she has no plans to settle down. Well her plan not to stay long didn’t work out as she had planned because Axel Hunt walked onto her life, or you could say she walked into his life. Not only is he hot and makes her feel things she wasn’t ready for, he is hopeless with women and because of his lack of dating, he will never be able to win over his mate when she chosen. So that she can help with this problem she comes up with a plan to help him. It may be that she has an ulterior motive behind all of this, and so she proposes a make believe relationship…. Oh, yea it is also a win win situation for the both of them.
Lucy’s proposition to Axel starts to back fire on the both of them. Real feelings start to develop between the two of two of them. Axel and Lucy are going to have to figure out a way, if there is one, to reconcile their love with needs for the needs of a nation. It only gets tougher for them when danger appears. Will Axel be able to let Lucy go when he finds his fated mate? Will Lucy get her heart broken over this fake dating relationship? Will Axel give up his crown in order to keep Lucy? Well I am not going to tell you. You are going to have to read it to find out.
No Spoilers. ARC free book given in exchange for an honest review.
King, yep, he was the king, just a soon as the Oracle named his mate. Of course, he'd have to get her to agree to mating with him, but he would be the king. What woman would say no to that? Until she named his future bride, Axel had plenty to keep him busy. Busy he had been since his teens when he'd taken over after his father's death. Lucy was his assistant/secretary. He'd come to depend on her. He was also way too attracted to her.
Lucy didn't plan on mating anyone, but it had been a long time since she'd even played the dating game. Too bad he was her boss, and too bad she was who she was. Then they bantered until he began to wonder if he would know what to do when the Oracle named the woman. He didn't have time to date. His brother's had played enough for him too. What if Lucy was right and he couldn't win his named mate? Her offer to let him practice on her was just too much to turn down. He'd wanted her since she began working for him.
Were they getting in too deep? Could they just play at dating and more? Would they be tempted to make it real? Or was it already. The Oracle wouldn't just let that go. Was there a chance Lucy could be his mate? No, life didn't work that way.
Meanwhile, there was a lot going on and more every day he had to deal with. Was the Oracle up to something? How far would she go to get things under control? Could it be dangerous? Axel was busy “pretending”.How long could he lie to himself and Lucy?
Another winner for the author. We readers are the real winners. This one is touching, steamy and has two people (well lions) with sass, strength, loyalty and feelings deeper than they are willing to admit. Don't miss this wonderful conclusion to the series—and don't be too downhearted because it is the end. The next ones ( at least I hope that is what is coming up next) looks like a handful for whoever has to control these guys.
I loved the way the author set Axel and Lucy on their course of action. Having her "help him out" for when the oracle officially told him who his mate is was great. The addition of the old dragons leads me to believe this is not the last book in the series, even though the epilogue seems to imply such. I also want to know what happened to their half brother Hercules, that was introduced in book 1.
All I can say is thank god this was on kindle unlimited because I would be mad if I paid for it. I really didn't like anything about the book. Skipped through most of it
This final book of the series was great. We finally get Axel's story. Axel had been ruling since his father died. Now that his brothers have their mates, he needs his in order to cement his position as king. He has found himself being driven crazy by his secretary, Lucy, ever since she came to work for him. She was sent to him by the Oracle and has been a great help. But he really needs to stop looking at her butt and admiring her curls. He is required to marry the woman chosen for him by the Oracle or lose his kingship. Since he hasn't yet been given the name of his prospective mate he is unable to pursue her, maybe it is Lucy? That would be great.
Lucy has secrets that preclude her having a mate of her own, at least in her opinion. She really likes Axel and offers to help him up his game so he will be able to win his mate. One kiss has her rethinking her offer. First off if the liplock he laid on her is anything to go by, he doesn't need her help. Second, she liked the kiss just a little too much. She decides she will take the chance for a little happiness and good loving while it lasts. But she finds herself falling more and more for this man, could she actually be his mate.
The Oracle has something up her sleeve. She also has a strange collared dragon hanging around with her. What's up with that?
I liked both Lucy and Axel. Axel has the weight of the worlds on his shoulders, but then along comes Lucy to help him lighten up a little while helping with his work as Axel's secretary. The problem is that as the future king, his mate needs to be predicted by the Oracle, and he is falling for Lucy.
I loved watching these 2 interact. They were obviously great for each other. There were a few twists that I wasn't expecting. This book seemed to be introducing the Awakened Dragons which I had read before any of these. There were also some other surprises in this story. All in all it was a satisfying conclusion to the series. I still like all the dragon series better, but I was introduced to dragons long ago by my mom, so that might have something to do with it. Try the bundle if you like the sounds of lion shifters trying to woo their predicted mates and save the world at the same time!
Spectacular ending to the Lions of Pride Island series. Throughout this series Axel has been the King in waiting. Always the quiet brother, the private brother, the brother putting what is right for his country first and his own needs a dim second. Until Lucy, his new secretary. Lucy is smart, takes no guff and helps Axel with his duties like no other assistant has before. There's a strong attraction between them. It is drawing them into a questionable relationship that may damage Axel's chances to be King. The Oracle must choose Axel's fated mate, and it may not be Lucy. The challenges they face, the history that haunts them, will have to be overcome. Lions & Dragons & Witches, oh, my, full Axel be willing to prove his mettle and earn his place as King. It's a great adventure finding out.
Lions of Pride Island was a cute series. It leads into the Awakened Dragons series, so there is THAT as an added benefit.
As I sit here writing this, I keep asking myself, what as a reader am I looking for that I keep being a little upset.
On a side note, I would recommend this series to anyone who are looking for something cute, quick and anyone who enjoys Terry Bolryder. My only wish is someday soon, when I pick up one of her series it might have a little more depth and I know I will re-read her books again and again.
I really don't understand why this is the third in the series instead of the first. I also really despise sexual harassment and when an employer seduces an employee, even if consensual, in my book it is sexual harassment.
Another thing, if there are going to be lion shifters, I'd like a good bit fo the story to involve actually shifting into lions.
And for goodness sake, one would expect an author to remember the names of the characters from one book to the next. The name of Cain's fated mate is Brenna, not Char, and there is no excuse for that mistake.
Like the book....way to leave us hanging in the end though
I figured Lucy and Alex would end up together but I didn't think you would throw in the twist of the new old dragons and nothing else. Will there be a new series about them getting mated? However, I have to say I liked that he grew a pair and went against the Oracle and followed his heart. The fight between Alex and the Dragon was awesome as well.
A good light read to finish of this series and give Axel, the final brother and king, his long awaited mate. When Lucy suggested her plan I knew how this was going to go but it was still a fun read and I did like the part with the Seer doing her best to make Axel understand his responsibilities and that he needed to trust his instincts. Just needed to be edited better, at one point in the epilogue Brenna was called Char.
Axel was to be the next king. The Oracle needed to just him a name of his mate. He was notorious for being difficult. Another secretary was needed. He was willing to see how good they were. Lucy was that next pick. A sassy and gorgeous female lion. Feelings were seemingly instant for the both of them. But starting something when the Oracle was going to pick his mate, was dangerous.
This was a good ending to this series. It was fast paced, sweet, and held some action. I liked both the lead characters and their strength and willingness to fight for what they wanted. There were several typos as well as names being incorrect (especially near the end). I think another round of edits would fix that easily enough.
Future King meets one thing he can't walk away from...
Kindle Unlimited standalone in series! He's been fighting an attraction because he knows his mate couldn't possibly be his assistant right? When they strike up a deal, it becomes more than either can walk away from... duty or the woman he has fallen in love with??
Having read all three of the Lions of Pride Island books I can only say WOW did you get the mix right or what Terry, they were exciting and romantic at the same time with just the right amount of thrill to romance and the Female leads were sassy and sweet JUST Perfect
I first caught onto her works through dragons later finding she had branched into all manner shifters. Boy was I lucky. She has a talent that makes each story an adventure. I cannot praise her works high enough. I am hooked.
Enjoyed it very much...have enjoyed whole series including the dragon series as well...funny read the awakened dragon series and made me want to read them again
It’s always a slightly bittersweet moment when I come to the ending of a series. I’ve grown found of the characters, I cared about what happened to them and to say good-bye is not always easy… even if necessary. Yet – I’ve come to know Shifter Romance authors enough to know that the ending isn’t always the end of meeting up with favorite characters – so time will tell.
The princes Beau and Cain have found their mates, even if they were picked out by the Oracle, still they found their happy ever after in strong, sassy and loyal women. So far for Axel, the prince who has taken up the reins of King since his father’s death – the Oracle has been silent. And the waiting is getting on his nerves. It was true that some of the weight of being leader of his people, in name at least if not yet fact, has lifted since the Oracle did send his current secretary, Lucy, to him not so long ago. If she was perfect for the job, if his eyes strayed to her curves and her smile a bit too often, if he thought about her far more than he should… well, that was between him and his lion. Axel knew he had no true choice for picking out his own mate, the Oracle always made that choice for the royal family. But if he could, his heart was telling him to look in Lucy’s direction.
Lucy has secrets. Ones that have hurt her in the past, and ones that she will never let her guard down enough to tell the man who should be told. Axel has been the perfect boss, for a King that is. And if she watches the frown lines on his face deepen and longs to ease the tension there, if she does everything in her power to lighten his heavy load, if she cannot get him out of her mind or the things that she’d love to do with him either… well, that is between her and her lioness. He could never pick her as a mate, his path was decided by the Oracle. But… what if she could help him and herself out just a bit while he waited for that decision. What if… they indulged in a pretend romance, just to give him some practice of course. It wouldn’t count, it wouldn’t be real… they wouldn’t let emotions get in the way. Right?
I enjoyed Protector of the Pride. Axel has been that perfect brother, the one who takes on the responsibilities while Beau and Cain went out and lived their lives. Doesn’t really seem fair, does it? Finally, Axel is stepping out from those responsibilities and leading with his heart, his instincts. Everything within him is saying Lucy is his mate. And he’s about to defy convention to prove that to her and the Oracle. Would he give up his crown, the country he loves with all his heart? Yes, if it means he cannot have his own heart next to Lucy.
I loved the banter between Axel and Lucy, how she never let’s him get too full of himself. There is tenderness within the passion between them. Oh, yeah the sexy times were sizzling… but the obvious affection and need for each other was there from the start. It was the perfect ending of a series that I enjoyed …and if I have secret hopes of a spin-off, that’s between me and my Kindle. *grin*
The last f this series was just as good as I knew it would be and leads us to the new series that Terry is writing about the dragons that are both out of sleep to help keep all shifters in line, have read all of the dragons that have been brought back from their sleep and they a really great a series, you will enjoy them as well.
Spoiler Alert - Don't read if you get upset at spoilers
I have to be honest, I had trouble relating with the heroine at beginning of the book. The heroine, Lucy, practically goaded the heir to the throne into kissing her and taking her out. Her motivations seemed contrary, in one thought saying it is for his benefit, but then admitting to herself she wants him, then angsting over not wanting anything permanent with him. And again her not wanting anything permanent was partly because she did not believe she could be chosen to be queen and partly because she kept saying she never ever in her life wanted to be mated and have children. It just made it difficult for me to develop a rapport with Lucy. That said, as the book progressed it became clearer what the issues were and that the hero and heroine were both good people. There was a little action which I very much enjoyed as it brought depth to the storyline. And I must say I am intrigued with a secondary character named Isaac. I hope we hear more about him in future books.
My favorite of the three brothers!! Axel is under a ton of pressure and he has yet to get the name of his fated mated mate from the oracle and without it, he can't take his place as King. He also has a new sexy secretary that he can't help but be seriously attracted to, but he can't get involved with her since the oracle should be picking his mate at any time. Lucy has the hots for her sexy, stressed out boss but knows that he's not for her and even if he was, she's not in the market for a mate, so she proposes a deal; a fake relationship so Axel can practice his wooing for when the oracle announces his fated mate and Lucy will have the memories of them being together, which is all she wants. From the start their fake dating is too intense and their feelings are too deep to be considered fake, but neither of them are strong enough to walk away. I loved seeing Axel's goofy side and that he trusted Lucy enough to relax and be himself in her presence. Lucy was a fantastic counterpart and I loved how she wouldn't let Axel get himself too stressed out.
