“Shhhhhhhh.”

“Quiet.”

“Something’s not right.”

What do you do when you know something seems off? When your sixth sense awakens to an imperceptible change in the way people on the street are behaving? When the pattern of everyday life begins to shift, subtle at first, dramatic within a single nightfall? Their facial expressions, how they touch each other, the tenor of their voices...

Something is wrong.

What do you do? Your family is hundreds of miles away. You’re meant to be celebrating. All you have are your friends. And the head on your shoulders.

You run. The infected are coming.

A global infection. Seven college students must band together, and survive the Outbreak. Society is dying. There are no rules anymore. Take what you want, and protect what you love.

Some action, lots of angst and inner dialogue

This is a solid book for a new author. The story starts in my personal sweet spot, though with a detour. I love it when the zombie story starts a few days or hours before the outbreak. We get to know our heroes as they are in their normal lives. We get to watch the unfolding drama. In this story, we actually have the prologue, which takes place a year and a half *after* the outbreak. But then we are right back to the day before the outbreak.

The book is sometimes a little over written. For this book, it didn't work. The main characters were all supposedly 22-year-olds just graduating from college. The very long prologue served to set up relationships and characterizations that had them acting more like 18-year-old freshmen. A lot of angst and girls, and who likes whom, who will get to sleep with whom. I found it tedious.

It seemed like at least half of the story was taken up by the angst ridden interactions between characters, arguments, inner thoughts. The characters were all distinctly different from one another. So in that way they were developed. The main male characters were more developed than the females. Of the three females, the two attractive ones were portrayed as socially acceptable sexual teases, sort of stuck in a belief that they were helpless. When the main female character bemoaned that it was a man's world, and she didn't know how she'd survive, I almost deleted the book. The other attractive female was just annoying. The *unattractive* female had little "screen time". This was a disappointing aspect of the book.

As with most zombie novels, the author presented us with television news casts of the unfolding end of the world. And I love it when they do. Most authors do a poor job of scripting news readers and on the scene reporters. This author, for the most part, did well. The in-studio dialogue was not right. And the key on-scene sequence was kind of hard to follow (though with potential). But most of the non-studio scenes were very well written. Two other things I really like were the fact that the author never mentions zombies, "gosh can you believe zombies are real" (tiresome!) and our main characters are NOT gamers who spend their time fighting zombies on a computer in their parent's basement.

There were few typos, which for an indie book, is impressive. If you like lots of inner turmoil, youthful angst, which boy will get what girl, with some realistic running and fighting zombies, then this is a pretty good book. You'll probably like it.

Seven friends are trying to survive. Reports come in about a sickness. There is one word going through their minds, home. This story takes us through right before and after the start of an epidemic. Little do these friends know what it will take to survive. What a start to a series! It gives you chills because at anytime we could be forced to face what we believed would never happen. It makes you think of what you would do and how strong you would be. If you love zombies this is the book to start with! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Gripping

Really well told story. Read all three and found each captivating. Couldn't find the review spot for the last book so I 'll leave it here. This was a fun adventure with a bit of a twist at the end.
