After her father lost the family's fortune, Wilhelmina was cast out of the fashionable set and banished to the wallflower section. Taking a position as a social secretary to help support her family, she's mostly come to terms with her new status. But when her old friend Edgar returns to New York society for the first time since she rejected his marriage proposal, she's newly ashamed at how far she's fallen--and how hastily she dismissed him years ago. Her strategy is to avoid a face-to-face encounter at all costs, but he seems to have other plans. Will Edgar take advantage of their now reversed positions and make her regret her refusal, or is there still hope for a friendship between them--or something more?
At Your Request is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Jen Turano's new Gilded Age historical romance series, Apart From the Crowd! Includes an extended excerpt of the first full-length novel in the series, Behind the Scenes.

OOOHHH, I just can't do it. I keep getting snagged in by Turano's gorgeous covers and cute synopses, and I keep hoping for some improvement in the plotting. Apparently I'm insane for doing it, too; I keep hoping for a different result and getting frustrated at the repetition of irrational plots.
The minute impoverished Wilhelmina sees the man she previously rejected as not good enough or rich enough, she dives into the midst of friends at the ball to hide from him. When he comes to greet her, she climbs under a chair! That's not the worst of it...her body gets wedged there helplessly: "...he squatted down next to her. 'Do you think the fabric of your skirt snagged on a nail?'...'I'm afraid I'm no longer that type of stuck, Edgar. It's more a case of my, um, parts, not exactly fitting in the small amount of space I tried to squish them into.' Well, easy fix, Edgar. Lift the chair up, and gravity will help you out. Especially since "Wilhelmina had never been a lady possessed of a waifish figure," right? Gravity is a wonderful ally.
But her "friends" leave her lying on the floor for fully three more pages while they attempt to restrain laughs, eat sugar biscuits, and discuss the growing size of bustles in the newest fashions. In fact, Edgar squats there helpless, leaving her friend Miss Griswold to finally tug a bit on the chair, grunting ineffectually. Mrs. Travers, the hostess, comes by to ask what's going on. Discussion begins of why, which obviously Wilhelmina can't say with Edgar himself squatting there trying not to laugh (seriously, this guy has the hamstrings of an Olympian, or he'd be cramped up by now.) So Miss Cadwalader has to rescue her: "'She's under there because of the mouse....it wasn't a little mouse, mind you, but an enormous one, with rather large teeth.'" Insert three more pages of ladies leaping onto chairs and servants rushing out with brooms.
Wilhelmina is still stuck. Edgar is still squatting near. (Shall we make that Spartan hamstrings?)
Finally, Miss Griswold tries the chair again. She squeezes Wilhelmina's hips together so Edgar can Pop! the chair off with good results: "leaving her still on the floor but without a chair attached to her."
Having picked her up off the floor, Edgar strolls around the ballroom with her, where they spat a little and where Wilhelmina comments on the size of his muscles and pokes his arm to see how hard they are (Seriously, not kidding, guys!!) and he tells her he's come back to town to get married. Oh...and he thanks her for having rejected him.
And that's just the first couple of chapters!! Afterward we have instalove (they haven't seen/spoken to each other in seven years) and a HEA. With lots of crazy bits in between.
If you see me mark another Turano as want-to-read you have my permission to stage an intervention....at least it's free!
Set in Gilded Age New York, this sweet and satirical novella featuring a friends-to-more / second chance romance is yet another delightful read from the pen of Jen Turano!
If you fancy a historical romance with hilarious antics, At Your Request is sure to be your cup of tea!
📚 Apart from the Crowd Series 📖 0.5 Prequel Novella) At Your Request
A Delightful Escape! This prequel novella was an absolute delight to read. The only downside was that, being a novella, it ended so soon! Delightful and quirky characters, a charming romance, and a lovely ending that prepares the reader for the launch of this new series.
A delightful romance. This novella has engaging characters and funny situations and was a pleasure to read. Recommended for a quick fun historical romance read.
Ah, a hilarious, short-n-sweet novella from Ms. Jen Turano! Fair warning that it is extremely fast paced, and more banter than anything. That being said, the banter IS delightful, as are the characters. I would have enjoyed this as a full-length novel, for certain. I understand the purpose of novellas (fleshing out background characters, teasing novels-to-come, and giving a respite to awaiting fans), but oh, how I wish so often that they were longer! The names in this one were particularly goofy, but very fitting of the apparent personalities behind them. I suspect that they shall prove to be the ladies featured in the books of this series.
This was a delightful, wintery read, that’s sets the series up very well as it introduces you to the main characters in the Apart From the Crowd series. A few of the things I experienced through this cute novella were blizzards, sleigh rides, a humid conservatory full of plants, ice-skating, and charming characters who brought comical humor to the pages. I really enjoyed it.
Wilhelmina Radcliff once had all of New York society at her feet, her future glittering with promise. But when her father's unscrupulous business partner lost the family fortune, Wilhelmina went from social darling to wallflower, forced to seek employment as a social secretary to help keep her family afloat. When Edgar Wanamaker, once her closest friend -- and her first proposal of marriage -- appears at a ball where she is employed by the hostess, Wilhelmina is mortified. With the assistance of a few fellow wallflowers she attempts to avoid the utter humiliation of facing the one who got away. But when Edgar convinces her to give him a few moments of her time, for the sake of their once close friendship, a spark of hope rekindles in Wilhelmina's heart. Could it be that an outcast wallflower didn't miss her first, best chance at love after all?
At Your Request marks another reading first for me this year, as it is my first foray into Jen Turano's fiction. As the set up to her new Apart From the Crowd series, Wilhelmina and company's stories promise to be a clean read alternative for those who might otherwise enjoy mainstream historical romance authors such as Lisa Kleypas or Julia Quinn. I loved how Turano set up the premise of the series, as the wallflowers break social barriers and bond over their shared social ostracization. I'm also a sucker for second chance romances, and while the brief length of this novella limits reader engagement in Wilhelmina and Edgar's story, even from this brief sample it is abundantly clear that Turano is capable of telling a charming tale with warmth and humor.
Those looking for historicals with historical depth will not find that here, for At Your Request is essentially a Hallmark romantic comedy with rudimentary historical trappings for color. The dialogue lacks spark or the flavor of historical authenticity, overly formal and often clunky. That said, I believe Turano fills a unique niche within the historical fiction market, bringing humor and a contemporary sensibility to her writing that possesses great potential, leaving me curious to sample Turano's full-length fiction. The first book in the Apart From the Crowd series, Behind the Scenes, releases in April, and follows the budding romance introduced here between Wilhelmina's fellow wallflower, Permilia Griswold, and department store owner Asher Rutherford. I really enjoyed Permilia's character, and her spark-filled introduction to Asher reminded me of Mr. Selfridge -- so I am already invested in their story. At Your Request was the perfect introduction (at long last!) to Turano's lite historical romantic comedies. While not without issues, I enjoyed this sample and am curious to see how Turano's humor and heart translate to a full-length work.

About this book:

While languishing one evening at a ball given by one of the esteemed New York patriarchs, Wilhelmina is appalled to discover that Mr. Edgar Wanamaker, her oldest and dearest friend, and the first gentleman to offer her a marriage proposal, has shown up at the ball unexpectedly, having been absent from New York ever since she rejected his offer years before.”

It had it’s silly moments, but also some really sweet moments. I really enjoyed seeing Permilia a bit as an introduction to her story. :)
What a fun and humorous historical novella from Jen Turano! I truly enjoyed the main characters Wilhelmina Radcliff and Edgar Wanamaker. They shared a past friendship and Wilhelmina turned down his past marriage proposal. They are rediscovering their true feelings for each other. It was refreshing to see Wilhelmina and Permilia Griswold develop a friendship and the back and forth banter they shared. It was interesting reading about the wallflowers and the societal expectations at the time. Way too much prim and proper! This was a great introduction to a new series and you will be hoping for a happy ending for this fun couple.
Fun, romantic, hilarious book - loved it! :) I always love the way Jen Turano shows how wrong and silly it is to attach extreme importance to how much money a person has and their so-called social standing. She shows brilliantly that treating others kindly and not snubbing someone because of their lack of wealth is the right way to be towards a person. Edgar is so likable and Wilhelmina finally realizes what's important. The skating scenes were fun! There's even a mystery solved and hints for the next book and the mystery in it. I'm looking forward to reading more about Asher and Permilia, both great characters.
I have long been a fan of Jen Turano's books, since I read her very first. She has the most wonderful dry sense of humor ever and applies that to all her books. Jen Turano's books are just plain fun to read and make you feel GOOD! I laugh out loud all the time when I'm reading her books and certain passages are so hilarious, I find myself going back and re-reading them several times. If you're looking for a great time, don't miss Turano's works. You'll be glad you did.
She crafts characters that are larger than life and funnier than anything! I love them all. AND...we get a hefty sneak peek at her next full length novel at the end of this one. I can't wait!
Better than I thought. It was an easy read with not much depth, but it was fun. There were a couple things in the story that just seemed too silly for me to actually love the book, but overall I liked it.
Jen Turano continues to bring life and joy to her readers through her books. At Your Request is the introduction to a brand new series. Short and sweet, we get a little glimpse at the world we are about to enter in the first full length book Behind the Scenes which releases in April 2017.
Miss Wilhelmina Radcliff and Mr. Edgar Wanamaker provide a fun and entertaining story that sets the stage for this series. We are introduced to the people who we will be spending our time with in the future. I adore the Gilded Age and am greatly looking forward to "attending" Alva Vanderbilt's famed costume ball in the next book.
Because this is a short book, I don't want to give anything away, however, you can read this book for yourself for FREE! And can you believe this cover? Jaw droppingly beautiful! Quirky and fun, Wilhelmina and Edgar will have you cheering them on from the sidelines, or in my case probably sprawled out on the ice for my lack of coordination while skating. I have found that I think one of the main reasons I am continually enthralled by Jen's books, is that they remind me a bit of Anne of Green Gables. With elegant speech and interesting predicaments, these books never lack for humour and adventure.
*Spoilers ahead* I realize that novellas are intended to be short and compact and therefore not all the details or depth you may desire from a story will be there. However, this story is fairly ridiculous. It has little plot and even less depth. The whole love story takes place over the span of 2 days after the couple hasn't even seen each other in 8 years. They instantly fall in love (again?) at first sight. Even though the lady tried to escape the man's notice by crawling UNDER HER CHAIR. How that makes any sense, I cannot fathom. I have precious little hope in her sensibility. And she remained stuck in the chair for an overwhelming amount of time. When she's finally free, the man (I don't know if I can call him a gentleman) leads her off into a blizzard to try to discover her feelings for him. The "hero" insists that he'd never spoil the "heroine's" reputation and yet does just that. And they manage to be very cool and collected about their past failed proposal - but somehow, in the space of a fairly short conversation, end up revealing their feelings for each other. Throw in a totally random moment where another character haggles over skates in the park and a miraculously quick and easy attempt to recover a family fortune and you have the totality of the book.
I am already a HUGE fan of Jen Turano books. They are fun and make me grin and giggle. This novella has been sitting in my pre-order cart for awhile, and I was so happy to see it pop up on my Kindle the day it was released. This first book of a new series captured my attention right from the start. The names of the girls--like Wilhemina. Oh my. And that they are all "official" wallflowers for the New York Season? Love it. And then finding Wilhemina at a ball stuck under a chair? I just cracked up.
If you want a good fun quick read that will leave you ready to start a new adventure with the wallflowers of the society season, you must begin reading this novella At Your Request! Besides, you will get a few pages into the first OFFICIAL book of the series too at the end! This is shaping up to be a 5 star series!
At Your Request ( Apart from The Crowd )A Novella Jen Turano At Your Request is the prequel to Turano’s new series Apart From The Crowd. I really loved the novella and looking forward to reading the first book Behind The Scenes which releases in April 2017.The author captured my heart right at the start and did not let go till the end. I loved the novella and the characters, they were well written and easy to follow. Turano writes quirky and lovable characters, which will keep you laughing through the story. This is Wilhelmina and Edgar’s story. Wilhelmina is one of society wallflowers. Her father having lost all his fortune ,she must take on a job of social secretary. Edgar was a childhood friend, who has been gone for a while. He is also a different person . What will he think of Wilhelmina after he finds out that her father has lost everything?
My first intro to Jen Turano and it was nice. The humor I found to be a little more silly than funny but the introductions to the wallflowers was my favorite part. I would have loved a read just based on these cleverly named women without the added love interest. Not a great historical feel to the writing but it was a good read.
Sweet and humorous. At Your Request was just long enough to give me a taste of @JenTurano's writing. Her characters, their world, and dialogue were intriguing enough that I'd be willing to read a full-length novel from this author.
This book honestly made me cringe too many times to count. It was fairly clean but it was so ridiculous and historically inaccurate and rushed that I just absolutely couldn't enjoy it at all.
A lovely novella that humored me immediately and couldn't put down, also gives a peek into Turano's next book, Behind the Scenes :) Looking forward to Permilia Griswold's story!
Very nice book. Christian historical fiction. Planning to read the whole series this year and they will all count for my reading challenge. Lovely characters. Boy and girl. Grew up together. Caring. Love. Rejection. Knight in shining armor saves the lady fair, not literally. I can't wait to see what they get into in the next book...and onward.
