With the rebellion now in full swing, shifter-mage hybrid Sunaya Baine has no time for distractions. She must find out the true identity of the Benefactor and pull the plug on the Resistance's funding before they succeed in their grand plans for genocide and destruction.
But the heat is upon Sunaya now, and it demands to be sated. And since the Resistance has marked her for death, she can no longer walk freely amongst the very people she is trying to save. Death, danger, and desire hem Sunaya in on all sides, and with her friends caught up in their own problems, she cannot truly count on anyone except herself.
Does Sunaya have what it takes to wrangle her unruly shifter instincts and embrace her heritage as a mage once and for all? Or will she succumb to the forces around her, and finally lose her way?
The third book in the series Sunaya ‘Naya’ Baine (24), a shifter-mage hybrid; a black panther and a licensed Enforcer, is trying to help get things back in order after the chaos that happened after the Chief Mage, Iannis ar’Sannin, who wasn’t just the ruler of Solantha – he governed the entire state of Canalo and was one of the most powerful mages in the Federation of Northia, had disappeared. While Iannis is back, the humans and shifters has lost the little faith they had in mages, and more and more is joining the Resistance. Shut out and feeling a bit alone, Naya has decided to figure things out on her own, including who the Benefactor is. Overall, I'm glad we finally got some romance in this series, however, I wish it had been a bit different. More build-up instead of just saying let's get married without the ‘I love you’'s. That said, I'm getting a bit tired of the series. Maybe I need a break?

Marked by Magic (The Baine Chronicles #4) by Jasmine Walt we finally find out who the Benefactor is! This has so much action, mystery, fights, magic, and romance in it. This one I liked best so far. Really good series, I just love it! Every book so far have been 5 stars! Great plots, characters, dialogue, magic, fantasy, action, adventure, suspense, and so much more! I bought the rest of the series!
Finally some movement with the sloooooooow burn romance, but the long arc is seriously heating up, too. This is a good series and the world is so screwed up that I can see it going longer than the current arc, if the author chooses.
The characters are really very good, as well. This is one of those series that gets better with each book.
My first time reading this series and I loved it! Full of action, magic, mystery, the power of friendship & love. This is a book that I highly recommend getting your hands on when it's released!
I stumbled onto this series a few months ago and was almost instantly hooked. It contains two of my favorite genres, paranormal/shifters and magic. Since the protagonist, Sunaya, embodies both - it only made the reading more enjoyable.
The newest addition to the series, "Marked by Magic" continues Sunaya's story of trials, tribulation, and angst as she stuggles to embrace her dual heritage of shifter/mage while struggling with her growing attraction for her mentor, Iannis in the midst of a growing rebellion against the mages.
Will Sunaya ever completely overcome her inner demons and fears about her dual heritage?
Will her and Iannis' love grow and be sanctioned or will it only be a distraction?
What about the rebellion - will it succeed or be quashed? Just who is the shadowy figure behind the turmoil?
I most highly recommend this book. Jasmine Walt, you've joined my list of the few, must read authors. Thank you for a job well done.
I had completely forgotten about the series and only stumbled upon it after going through my previously read books and seen that I had loved the first 3. I wasn't very invested in the story. I feel if I had reread the first 3 before jumping into the 4th I woud have connected to the world and characters better. instead I had to really really focus to bring up vague recollections of the previous plotlines and what not. The book is well written with a slow pace speckled with interesting action scenes. It sets up an upcoming mystery for the next book Loved Fenris, think he's my favourite The heat aspect was a little bit inconsistent in the book. Sometimes it was quite bad, sometimes not. More of a plotline to drive the main relationship
Actual is 5.2. Plenty character growth and non stop action. And just when you think Jasmine is going to end the series she throws in another twist. I can't wait to start book 5.
There was plenty of obstacles that Suyana had to overcome throughout the whole book, including Inanas. I loved the island chapter, that was pretty cool. I loved the backstabbing and betrayals even more.
This is a great 4th installment of the Baine Chronicles. Thank you Jasmine for the advanced copy in exchange for a review.
Grammar: Even for an advanced copy the grammar and wording is very solid. Very few mistakes were in the book that caused me to double read a sentence. And most or all of these will be gone by the time the book is published.
Story: Sunaya has to yet again deal with her dual nature and finds herself on both sides of struggle for power. She manages to solve a few of the mysteries of the ongoing conflict but finds even more foreboding concerns just over the horizon that leave lingering fears for the days to come.
This series and 4th book are great for anyone who enjoys a bit of shifter and magic in their stories. While this book is what i would consider a quick and light read (one day easy) its packed with ongoing adventure and several sub plots that keep you interested through the book.
One thing I appreciate most is that while the book does leave questions unanswered allowing you to look forward to later books it does close out the main events of the current installment. To often I find myself with cliffhangers that force me to beat my head on the desk until i find another book to read and distract myself from the previous one. But this does not in any way mean that there isn't plenty of anticipation for the next series
I used whispersync to switch from reading and listening. So nice that I could flip back and forth between them when I needed to.
I love this series. So many parallels to the real world, and yet still firmly rooted in it's own magical world. A lot of action, and some romance, with a lot of mystery and political maneuvering. From the ending I think there might be more political intrigue in the next book as certain people try getting in between the main character and her romance. Looking forward to that as well.
This is quickly becoming my favorite series to read this year. Without coming out and saying it directly, Miss Walt manages to talk about difficulties when different races, religions, and political beliefs clash. By using a person that has never quite fit into any of those spaces, and suddenly gets thrust into the world that she has been taught to despise her entire life, Miss Walt is able to show the ugliest parts, while also showing that there are good people out there too, and most of them are just trying to feed their family and get by.
For this specific book in the series Miss Baine has a target on her back, and has to get to the bottom of the renegades before someone gets to her first. While there is romance, this book is more about Miss Baine learning to control herself, and her actions than it is the romance.
All in all a great book, and series. I'm glad I picked up the whole set.
okay you're probably wondering why it took 3 day for me to complete this book, it isn't the book, personal issues, work and life just got in the way... It actually took about 3 hours total to completely devour it. Once again we pick up where Sunaya left off, not always a good place... We begin to see Sunaya develop her Mage skills and depend less on her shifter side. I'll not give away much more than that... Jasmine Walt continues to write an intelligent adult fantasy with lots of plot twists and character development. One can only hope that Jasmine and Sunaya continue to find new adventures. Personally I'd love to see more exploration of their world.
Marked by Magic has Sunaya trying to stay out of the way so the Chief Mage can help stop the rebellion, and so she doesn't get killed. She ends up doing things to help out even though it is dangerous. And add in the issues with her the Chief Mage and things are getting interesting.
This book starts out good, and the middle is good, but I felt like towards the ending it starts to get rushed and things sort of come out of nowhere. It was a little annoying, but I liked what happened between the Chief Mage and Sunaya. But I feel like other things were left undone, so I hope that gets addressed in the next book.
So n0w iv'e spent all night reading this one and I have to say it is the best one so far and really good. Finally we get answers and background on more than one of the characters that we have known next to nothing about. The world building is still pretty crappy which is why it doesn't deserve more than 4 stars. But the dialogue and such is better. The action is still pretty damn short and it isn't even really that good when any action happens. I can't see this series lasting very long maybe 2 books more at max.
I received this book as an ARC for my review. I LOVE this author! I was enthralled from the beginning of her very first book in this series. The characters and story draw you in, leave you wondering, and anxious for the next in the series. I love it when characters grow and change during a series, and this holds true for Sunaya and her friends. Many questions are answered, and many more are raised. I cannot wait for book #5!
I received a free copy of this book for my honest review. These books are getting better, the plot and pacing have show vast improvements over the second book. There are still things that could be better, like character development of the side characters and some of the dialogue. In general, it was a very enjoyable book and I look forward to the next book.
This is an incredible series and each book just delves further into the story and it hooks you. There is a huge war between the factions and things really neat up between Sunaya and Iannis.
Not too bad, the story is getting more fun. I still really like Sunaya. Still think the whole thing is happening too quickly... Love Fenris. Love Iannis. They're cool. Never know whether to find Iannis' protection of Sunaya endearing or annoying.. much like her I guess.
A great instalment in this very unique paranormal series. Jasmine keeps you on your toes wondering what is going to happen next. You will not be disappointed.
“Heroes were objects of admiration, but they were also targets.”
‘Marked by Magic’ started off with a bang! I loved the action packed beginning of this book as we follow Sunaya, now both a hero to a few and a target for most, as she navigates the violent political upheaval of the city. Sunaya really progresses as a character as she exposes and is exposed to the problems in the city. I like that she is strong in the face of so much death and discrimination but part of me wishes she could be given a break, be allowed to scream and cry, be comforted.
In a lot of ways the ending of the book could be seen as giving her break from the action and her ‘heat’ during its most trying time but I was a bit confused. It felt like tying up loose ends and very anti climatic.
Back to her ‘heat’ though (it definitely can be sectioned under the romance genre now). I’m not quite sure what to think about it- the ‘heat’ that is. I think it was an interesting development in the story but both under played and over played at times. It felt like it was a bit too easy when she could escape it and I would have like to see a few more tense scenes between her and the chief as she tries to get a handle on it.
Basically the overarching story keeps going on for another book, and continues at the end of this one too. More or less what you expect will happen will happen, however the ride is enjoyable. This does mean the ending is left a bit open ended but what do you expect from a multi-book series.
Expect your usual powering up of magical superhero in this book and look out for Chekhov's magical artifacts. There's not loads of these but I guarantee you'll spot them when they happen.
Oh if you were hoping that the romance would be any more nuanced than "that dude is hot" it's not. I'm sorry. The bajillion year old mage is still boringly attracted to the student, and the student is still boringly embarrassed about it all. There are some boring sex scenes in this one to spice it up though.
I suspect I won't enjoy the 5th in this series, but this was bearable.
The action is okay if a little... generic. The storyline is fairly interesting, but the romance is a bit rubbish.
