When Katherine LaFlamme is summoned home by her father, the Alpha of the North American wolf pack, she drops everything and answers the call. Despite her desire to experience the human world before she settles down, Katherine is fiercely loyal and, as her parent’s first born and the pack’s best tracker, she’s an essential part of the family.
There’s trouble at home; a hunter has invaded their territory and murdered several of their kind and a rogue wolf has been stalking the female members of the LaFlamme family. To make matters worse, a secondary claim to the Alphaship of North America has risen, setting the entire pack on edge.
Then Katherine meets a mysterious wolf named Quinn and things begin to get interesting… and very deadly. Katherine and Quinn are swept up in a puzzle of ancient rites, prophecies, and mythic lore which reveals that there’s more to both Quinn and Katherine than first meets the eye.
I received this book for free. I'm going to be honest, if I really like a premier book in a series, I will buy the rest of the books until I get bored of them. And I wouldn't even say I'm a harsh critic either, I can overlook a lot of things, as long as it is entertaining. I might even get physical copies if I can. As is clear by my rating, this was not one of them.
Needless to say I read reviews before I purchase a book. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much positive reviews on this one and to see it based in Canada (I live there!), and downloaded it immediately. Supernaturally suspenseful romance novels are some of my favourites after all, and I immediately dug in. Oh boy was I in for a surprise. To start, I will say it is well written (as in very little-to-no spelling errors or grammar errors), so that's why it's not a 1 star review. So here we go:
Supernatural? Yes. Though heavily similar to other authors I'm actually just fine with this, as how many iterations of a wolf shifter can you get before you just sound unbelievably goofy (see sparkly vampires), but the mention in the spoiler just immediately slammed me right out of the book. Not fun.
Suspenseful? No. Not really. She made it evidently clear of two things in the beginning which just breaks the book: Due to this glaring oversight and plot hole, I just had no interest even thinking about the villains in this book and thus there was no suspense. I just waited around to figure out if she would fix the plot hole, and wasn't surprised at all. It also made the hero's seem pretty unintelligent
Romance? I guess? See, I know a lot of these go for "MY MATE" situations, and it feels nice and kind of helps you believe in that one person is out there for you, but this one just falls 100% flat in my opinion. Their chemistry feels incredibly forced. She didn't show their relationship growing. She mentions them having conversations, but never actually tells us them. It was such lazy writing! GIVE ME CHEMISTRY!
Also there were just other things peppered in here and there that made me go... "what?". I'm a strong believer of "show, don't tell". King has not mastered this at all. There were too many situations where the world building and forced events just suffered due to failing attention to detail. I should have paid attention to them sooner. They just piled up by the end of the book.
There were a whole bunch of other things that just bugged me (don't get me started on the mission impossible - I won't even spoiler that because without context, good luck understanding what the heck I meant by that) and I'm just sorely disappointed with this book. It left me bored and wanting to read other books. I felt no sense of mystery, no sense of fulfillment, and overall, like I wasted my time. I wrote this review literally because I wanted to save others like me from the disappointment. If you read this far, thank you, as I think my review is probably going to get lost in a sea of 4-5 star reviews and I hope I will help your choice on whether or not to dive into this book.
The blood of eden by jj king was a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It is an awsome start to a series and definelty made me want to read the next book in the line up. I loved the characters and their development. King wrote some strong leads in this story. The family interactions once she came home were beautifully written. The swoon worthy male lead was another awesomely developed character. (I'm trying not to give any spoilers out so bare with me.) Books with shifters are some of my favorite reads anyways so this book already had that going for it for me. I would definelty recommend this book for anyone that is a fan of this genre. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars, and I wish I could of gave it half stars bc it's def a 4 1/2 star read, is that at times the story got so busy that it was almost distracting. All in all amazing read!!!
Steamy and sexy! This book tells the romantic tale of Katherine, the feisty heroine, and Quinn, her sensual soul mate. A lot of fun to read, fast-paced plot line, descriptive scenes, and my favorite, Werewolves! It is definitely worth the read if you are a paranormal romance fan. This is a #sluttyreview!
This is my first time reading this author and I have to say I loved the story, had me enthralled until the end.. I love how she tells some of the history of how the Wild River Pack came to be. How Pierre LaFlamme was sent to British Columbia from France where he was alpha to be the supposed first alpha in North America 100's of years ago. I also loved the fact that I was entertained with the love scenes. I imagine a lot of you remember when stories were written and the passionate scenes were not explicit, but thoroughly believable and entertaining. That's what Ms. King's are like and they are great! The story pulls you in and makes you a part of what's going on.
Kathryn LaFlamme is the first born of the 4 children of Pierre the alpha of North America, she is a very independent and successful attorney in the city. It's been years since she has gone home, or changed to her wolf, therefore has no idea of the unrest that plagues her pack. When she is summoned by her father, she realizes that the problem is worst than she thought. She returns home after years of absence and is welcomed with open arms and a very bad rogue situation that will change her life forever and teaches her that folklore isn't as bad s*** crazy as she thought.
Quinn an unknown wolf is an enigma to Kathryn, he is her soul mate and the attraction is very real, but he keeps her at arms length all the time, almost afraid to get intimate with her. This only makes the attraction stronger for both. As they work together to stop the rogue, They realize that one can't be without the other and Quinn decides to tell Kathryn his truth and more importantly hers.
This book was a good mix of suspense and paranormal. Characters were carefully written and the plot was interesting, where I thought nothing would surprise me - the author blew my thoughts out! I will read book 2 for sure!
This is an awesome read! A well written shifter romance that will grab you from the start and not let go. With a strong kick ass heroine and a sexy mystery hero who have sizzling hot chemistry and with tons of action and suspense this is a series you will want to read!
Thoughts: What started out to be just another shifter romance turned into something quite different towards the end. And no reveal on what it is. This is pretty good. I think I Need to read the next book in the trilogy to see how it goes. Recommended
Firstly let me say that I am not a fan of paranormal romances, but this author has managed to change my mind. I was blown away by this book!! This story is written in such a way that I was completely enthralled from the very beginning. The author has such a way with words that the reader is lulled into feeling that they are actually in the story. This is an awesomely written book, and I am totally in awe of the author for writing such a fantastic story as a debut book. I will definitely be recommending and reading more from this author.

This honestly is not that bad a read but what made me give the 2* star was the disappointing progress and ending of both the plot and characters.
Katherine was introduced as a strong sensual heroine (she hooked up with a brother duo as the story began). She was also portrayed as strong willed, sharp etc etc. This kinda held true till she met Quinn, her soul mate.
From then on there is no rhyme or reason to her behavior. She kinda plays around with Keme, another too-gorgeous guy but then realizes her 'soul mate' is out there - right after Keme finger*ks her. I am a bit lost of what is meant by soul mate in this scenario. Then she becomes a shadow of what she was initially - doing nothing productive or smart, just becoming a victim, escaping only through her 'special' ability. Even her unparalleled 'tracker' ability is put on the shelf as she just runs or cowers besides Quinn.
Quinn is honestly a very so so hero. He has no heroic qualities per se. He withholds info, cannot find or stop one crazy guy in a town, doesn't even appear to have an ability to fight, makes no smart decisions inspite of being part of a so-called Guardian group. He has some special prophetic ability being a 'Dreamer '- again useful for nothing except hiding stuff from the very person he is supposed to protect aka heroine. He exhibits no skill, no super power - what a boring male lead in a YA fantasy.
The whole plot is very boring as we discover it. A gang of native American wolf pack is introduced - no idea why, unless the author wants to make a point on Native Vs Settlers issue that is always in the burner in North America. A native American Alpha, his hot son - all are introduced as side characters with no plot relevance. They do nothing exciting except sit and have lunch and have boring political discussions.
Then we have a crazed villain and his side kick of a hunter who honestly are smarter and more efficient than hero, heroine and their side kicks. There is a group of super powerful beings called 'Guardians' who basically don't have anything useful against the crazy villain who was once part of their uber gang. They banished him, let him loose on the world, cant do anything useful to kill him, has nothing - no weapon or any super power to keep him down - how are these bunch of useless people 'Guardians'??? The only known factor about this useless bunch is that they cant reproduce and apparently that is the 'special super power' of our heroine - Fertility! Wow. Wow. Imagine a YA heroine whose special freaking ability is to get knocked up after having se x with our 'special but useless' hero. Very very mind blowing indeed!
After reading about this bunch of useless Guardians, I have no clue why anybody ever wants them to reproduce and continue - cos they seem to have no point at all!
Then there is a bunch of pack teams who goes around hunting hunters who have silver bullets..with no weapons or anything that can be used against them. Wow. What a scary bunch of wolf pack! The hunter kept picking them one by one and killing them very brutally and not even one single person of 'trained' wolf pack appeared to have any weapons or skills of any useful sort to fight back against this human guy. How in the whole world are these idiots considered predators?
Then we have the whole Bible spiel where all these people have Biblical origins and powers (which is apparently useless against a human guy with a silver bullet). The story ends with no proper ending - - Where does Katherine and Quinn and their upcoming kid and the whole 'secret' Guardian group fit in? - Why the heck is that crazy wolf kept alive (no doubt for plot use in later series) - Why is it soooooo freaking hard for the hero/heroine/dumb wolf pack to get hold of a silver bullet gun when the crazy villain and his sidekick found many pretty easily????
Anyways one of the most boring YA fantasy I have ever read.
JJ King has a good writing style and I think she would be great if she sticks with romance genre.
Crap, I had a hard time with this from the start. The h doesn’t come across as confident and savvy... she comes across as arrogant, entitled and spoiled.
But, I pushed on. She didn’t change much. Lots of internal talk, and whining about how wolves will never allow a female alpha, even tho she would be best. She’s almost 300 years old and sounds like she’s whined about this forever, but never tried to change or truely question it.
She’s also stuck on looks. Fashion. Grace. Composure. Chatelaine skills. Hers and her mothers. That’s fine, but she’s still managing to seem like she’s early 20’s and barely out of her teens to me. She’s supposed to have spent the last 70 years as a lawyer too.
Then they have a meeting of ‘here’s what’s wrong’ and she again, to me, acts like a youth as she remarkably comes to conclusions her family said took them ages to come up with. And to be frank, the problem of a previously unknown wolf pack who was already present and missed when the ‘wolf council’ decided there was no local population, and they were going to choose and import an alpha to the americas and take control (yes, long time ago)... only for them to get antsy and demand they have the alpha ship reassigned to them (by a governing body they have never heard of don’t forget)... after something like 200 years of keeping quiet!!! And yes, the h has been living away and mostly human for 70 years, but she’s kept in contact and she’s never once been told ‘wow, did you hear? There’s a previously unknown wolf population in our territory’ or ‘now that wolf population is challenging our right to rule’.
Anyway, I kept going... and while it looks like all the local females are in some kind of danger, they agree to run a mandatory spa timeout for the female to keep them save and not scared... but the alphas only and first born daughter can go out alone and track the bad guys (and miss a check in and not be contacted until 3 hours later! But moving on).
And then she follows the bad guys scent and gets completely distracted by a really yummy smelling guy that makes her want to jump his bones... and they sit around in coffee shops for hours drinking and eating. Granted, the new yummy guy has details on the crazy bad guy, but do they try and keep tracking him? No, they go on a date. Maybe this is why females can never be alpha. Plus he said he’d been trailing her for two days and she’d never noticed.
But I was still reading... until she took time out to pep her smelly self up before continuing on with the yummy guy, and they have a make out session, but they are interrupted... and she took the time out to tell us that while her mother may be full wolf, she’s and upstanding enough citizen to have taught her young daughter that high class wolves bums should not touch the same public toilet seats as low class humans! ALWAYS cover the seat with toilet paper first... and her devoted young daughter has always remembered the lesson and her 300 year old self took the time to tell us that she remembered to toilet paper the seat... before she went on to almost root him in the same room...
Katherine is having a good life with her friends and being a lawyer in the city. She is her life as she wants. She gets a message from her brother that she needs to come home. Then she receives a letter from her father saying the same. When she calls her brother he will not tell her anything. He overwhelms all her senses, she has never felt anything like this before. Quinn fills her in on the rogue wolf and who he is. Quinn also feels that connection to her as well. Katherine informs her family of what she learned. Katherine is also expected back at Wild River for a summit with the wolf that will be co-alpha with her father. When the rogue and hunter threaten those close to them, the wolves will do everything they can to keep them safe. This was a nice start to series, there could have been more with the rogue and hunter. The book keeps you engaged. I will be reading the next in series

What can I say, Loved it. Katherine is a lawyer has not been home for years she works to much and has no social life. As a wolf shifter she has years to worry about all that. Her dad calls her home and she realizes that maybe she does not have as much time as she thought. She meets 2 guys who could be the one, someone is challenging her dad as Alpha, she misses her family. Decides to move home and life really begins! Action packed drew me in and held on tight, I could not get enough. Read this one book 2 a day three and still want more. JR King has went to the top of my list for must read authors.

This was really interesting story. With many interesting informations and wonderful world. Sure any world with wolf shifters is wonderful but this one have its uniqueness. Kathrine is unique too; strong, head well on her shoulders, passionate and caring. Quinn is an enigma, for her to solve, for her to be with. Theirs attraction palpable from the very beginning, theirs souls matching beyond the possible. Katherine go through quite the ordeals, struggle the remain alive, and Quinn is there for her whenever she needs him. It was stressful and painful but beautiful journey. And I certainly need more.
King has a unique perspective on shifter folklore that makes for a good read in Blood of Eden. Katherine, an established attorney, is called home due to a threat to her pack and must work with a strange wolf shifter that she has just met, Quin, in order to track down a rogue wolf determined to endanger the females of her pack. As the two work together their pull to one another is undeniable. Secrets and legends are uncovered making for an interesting tale. The story is well written and delivers a tale worth the read.
THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR SEVERAL REASONS. THERE IS A STORY TO TELL, AND IT IS VERY INTERESTING AND QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT FROM MOST. WE ARE FOLLOWING WOLF SHIFTERS WHO HAVE FINESSED LIVING AS WOLF AND AS HUMAN. WE HAVE THE TRADITIONAL MATES AND SOUL MATES THAT APPEAR IN MANY SHIFTER STORIES, AND WE HAVE THE GUARDIAN WOLVES WHICH ARE MUCH RARER. WE HAVE A LITTLE SEX, BUT IT IS NOT THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE STORY, WHICH IS MAYBE A BIT DIFFERENT, TOO. IF YOU LIKE SHIFTER WORLDS YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. THEIR ARE MORE IN THE SERIES AND I WILL GET TO THEM TO.
Katherine is the first born daughter in the alpha pack, but for the past few decades she has been living more in the city suppressing her wolf side. Until the day she received a simple text message and letter from her family. Trouble is brewing ~ mystery deaths and a stranger lurking around the female members of her pack. Interesting story and characters, personally I prefer to read in first person but still enjoyed reading

I felt like this book was poorly written. Bad choice of words and phrases made the writing seem choppy. Seems like it needed another trip through editing. However, it was interesting enough that I finished it anyway. Interesting story, with some differences compared to the "normal" werewolf genre. It was worth the read. A smoother-reading story and better grammar would have gotten a solid 4 star review from me, maybe 5. Unfortunately, ease of reading and smooth story flow is really important to my ability to get lost in a story.
An enjoyable read that, while predictable, kept me turning pages. I will admit at times to getting a little confused as to whether the characters were in wolf or human mode with some of the descriptions used. Once I figured it out in terms of the author's writing style I didn't have an issue. Loved the fact that there was such a strong female lead in the book. Looking forward to the next in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Blood of Eden, even though the story was told at a more leisurely pace than I'm used to, it worked well, that's not to say it wasn't every bit as good as the storylines that dive right in, because it was...I love that the author took the time to give you interesting background knowledge on the characters and story, as well as having some great twists and turns to keep you hooked throughout...
This book was just very average for me. Personally, I felt it was way too wordy and unnecessarily lengthy. The story was pretty good, but I just felt like it missed its mark. Shifter books have the potential to be so intense, especially when they meet their mates. This was heading in that direction but was disappointingly lacking that Animalistic deive and hunger that could have, and should have, happened when they found their soulmate.
This book was awesome from the start! Katherine was a strong Alpha Female. The other characters were well written and they all blended well together. The story line was also exciting. There was so much love between the family and then of course between Katherine and Quinn. The action, the danger they faced, then the surprising revelation, I could not put this book down!!!! You will not be disappointed.

This was a good book. Enjoyed the story line with all the twists and turns. There is a rogue wolf on the lose that is attacking the women of the LaFlamme line. Kathrine gets a summons home due to the unrest. Trying to find a rouge and a hunter she comes upon a wolf named Quinn. These two are drawn together but there is danger coming for them as well as secrets that could destroy everything.

I really enjoyed this book and I will be reading the next ones. I gave it a 3 star because there was a lot of info that didnt need to be in there. No offense but its like the author "BS"ed sentences to make it longer. I skimmed a bunch of paragraphs that just had too much extra crap added. Just saying. Loved the plot and the book was good otherwise. (I dont like skimming and normally dont do that but it was just too much)
I am not sure where to begin. All I know is this is one of the best books about a female that I am so excited to read. I haven't put the book down just sad I read all of it so soon. I love this book and JJ King is a wonderful author and I highly recommend both the book and author to everyone and I look forward to reading more from JJ King.

Thank you for allowing me to review your book.
