Playing with Danger!

Rate this book
Sam is a 12 year old boy with a special power, a very cool, very unique type of mind power that most kids would love to have. No, he is not a mind reader, but he is capable of something else which at times he struggles to control. The other kids think he's strange and tend to avoid him. Sam becomes used to his loner status at school but when a very pretty girl moves in next door, everything changes.

He finds that before his new neighbor, Tess arrived, life was a whole lot simpler. He is now the number one target of the school bully, Jake Collins, who has also taken an interest in Tess. With no other option, Sam is forced to teach him a lesson.

But does he go too far and does Tess find out what Sam is actually capable of?

This suspenseful book for kids will have you captivated from start to finish. If you love reading about kids with special powers and you enjoyed my series called Mind Reader, then you are sure to enjoy this series too. It is an exciting story for both girls and boys,

Hi, so excited about being on Goodreads and sharing my Middle School books with you! I live in beautiful Noosa, in Australia. For most of my life I was a teacher of Middle School kids, and what an awesome experience that was. It gave me the opportunity to understand the problems that kids go through.
My writing partners are Kaz and Bill Campbell, they were also Middle School Teachers.
We hope you enjoy our books as much as we love writing them for you!!!

Mind Freak is a chapter book for children aged 8 - 13. It tells the story of Sam, a twelve-year-old telekinetic boy. His father abandoned the family, so he lives with his mother, who is a psychic. Sam is shy and unpopular, and often escapes into video games. He is self-conscious and secretive about mind power, which usually erupts in violent ways when he is upset.

Tess, a pretty girl, moves to town, and even though Sam is shy, they connect over a love of astronomy. The school bully becomes interested in Tess, and tries to get her to stop spending time with Sam by publicly mocking him. This causes Sam’s telekinetic abilities to erupt as Sam tries to teach the bully a lesson.

This book is written in a straightforward way that feels plodding. The writing and illustrations are extremely simple, and because the book is written from the first-person perspective of a twelve-year-old boy who doesn’t seem especially bright, the descriptions are rather sparse (Tess has “really cool posters” in her room, as well as glow in the dark stickers which Sam thinks would “look awesome” at night).

This book would ideally prompt some discussion about whether Sam overreacts in using his powers, but frankly there’s not much nuance here, and the extent of his telekinetic outbursts is pretty violent and dark, and clearly wrong.

Even worse, the end of the book is rather anticlimactic. It feels like it’s stopping in the middle of a larger book, and simply says on the last page that the story will be continued in Part 2.

This book might appeal to student with an interest in the paranormal or telekinetic activity, but there are much better children’s books for this age group with better vocabulary, writing, and springboards for reflection and discussion.

Tessa and Sam

Ms.Kahler has written an amazing storey for children from a point of view of two adolescents struggling with life issues and bullying one has a special secret the other trying to make sense of it all. For adults i'ts a jewel to read with your children or the grandchildren as a way of approaching the subject of bullying at school or the neighborhood. ☺ Kat
