Over the last few months my appreciation for paranormal fiction has blossomed. It’s obvious to anyone who follow my reviews that I’ve kind of devoured quite a few of them recently! I’ll put it right out there, I shied away from many of them a few years back because of the ever popular series that takes that took off like a firestorm. I was critical in my thinking because I had assumed too many books would be similar. Yes, it was a dumb thought and one that had me late in my appreciation for this type of genre. A few friends recommended a few of their favorites to me and I set out to stir up my to read shelf! Now, I’m so glad I did.
Because I did, I’ve had the opportunity to read “Watcher” which is the first in the Crookshollow Ravens series that Steffanie is spinning from her other Crookshollow series. I sort of wished I had read the other series that inner mingle. But then again, I still win because I will be binge reading those very soon as well. I was taken aback by the intensity in which Steffani creates her characters. Of course knowing that the two main characters were going to have some intense attraction and hardships I was expecting some fire so to speak. What I didn’t expect was the detailed back story to Cole and his shifter life. When I think of shifters of course the first thing that pops in my head is wolves and bears. Steffanie has a fox shifter series as well, so that intrigues me further. Cole is a raven shifter and has been “owned” by a psychopathic scientist that wreaks havoc amongst all members of his estate. In order to keep his tyranny to go on effectively, he marks each one of the shifters with a tattoo/ring of sorts that will cause severe pain if they are do misbehave or try to leave. Therefore, they’re stuck until their freedom is given by their master or they are sold to someone else. I found this both infuriating (the whole slavery thing) and fascinating. The reason I was so intrigued by the various tools that are used to enforce or assist each household. I mean it makes you want to punch Cole’s master in the face some but also find out how the heck this stuff works. That’s the part of my brain that wonders how we can use the devices towards evil! Insert evil maniacal laugh here. Cole has had to live his whole live underneath the madness and never felt he was really free. His father was useless and his mother became very sick at the hands of his master. He has a brother who would rather have just ran away from all the rough things and be the ignorant delinquent he wanted to be. Cole has had to learn to watch out for himself and for the few he cares about. But he can’t let himself go and actually love anyone until he is free. Finally free from the burden of serving a insane man.
Belinda has had enough. Her childhood consisted of so many ups and downs and a family that split apart. As she gets older and her mother remarries, she just kind of coasts along. She wants to do something that is part of her heart and who she is. She loves cooking and baking. With the little nudge from her then boyfriend/fiance, she opens up her bakery. She starts to have success right off the bat. I mean how could she not with how decadent and gorgeous her creations are? She has a sweet attitude that people flock to and it helps make her business a success. Just when she can think about maybe expanding or replacing some older appliances, her fiance takes off. She finds out that not only was he an butthead, but he stole from so many in her community. He worked in finance and helped others. Instead, he helped himself and robbed everyone basically. He went so far as when he disappeared, taking her clothes! In her devastation, Belinda continued on. She’s ended up paying a massive amount of debt things to him and she’s barely making it a go at the bakery. She refuses to depend on anyone or even allow anyone to see how bad things truly are. The assistant she’s hired is useless and she’s at her wits end with everything when she meets Cole in a chance meeting in her shop.
Without giving too much away, their attraction is instant. My heart went out to Belinda because she felt herself unworthy of being wanted by someone as hot as cole. Holy heck is that man sexy! Steffanie’s attention to detail is so appreciated with that one! Oh wait, what was I saying? Oh yes! Belinda is a beautiful person, inside and out. She doesn’t feel like she’s sophisticated enough for most encounters, and worries her lack of groceries is being seen around her middle. She has lived on the left overs from the bakery for months. On top of that, she just feels pudgy and ugly. She’s not though and again, the details describing her is wonderful. Belinda is so much like a lot of us are. She’s smart, witty when she wants to be, talented, caring, loving, and loyal to a fault. She’s not supermodel gorgeous or athletically thin. In my opinion, she’s just right. So does Cole!
Their encounters with each other turn into this storm of electric lust, fear, tragedy, strength and love. The more they are together, the more they learn about each other and what it’s going to take to truly make Cole be free from the upcoming devastating upheaval of his life. You see, his attraction to Belinda is not the only reason why he is so dead set on being free right at that moment! His master has turned things on him and has put every threat he has used into plan. What now? How the heck do they beat this and open up Belinda’s world to take back her life? Just when they devise a plan and seek help, it’s all blown up….
Steffanie has the uncanny ability to get you sucked into their story and throw all these awesome details you truly get lost in all of it. I have to say she was mighty successful in getting me to yell at my kindle at the end of it! Seriously! I was so mad! Yes, it does end in a cliffhanger! BUT….the next one is coming out in just a few short weeks. Thank heavens! I won’t have to yell at her too much then! :)
Positives:
I had never read about Raven Shifters before, and I appreciate the dedication Steffanie had in the details. She described their shifting very well and it wasn’t creepy or cringe worthy. I’ve read some where it has made me skip a few paragraphs to avoid the unnecessary graphic description.
I would have to say too, I wasn’t sure what a few things were, like the “Bran” and exactly what Ravens symbolize in many cultures. After I read this, I did some quick searches and found it to be rather interesting! I had of course assumed some knowledge from the literary work of Mr. Poe as well as in various movies, etc. I also remembered there were several things mentioned with the Celtic history as well. Ravens are actually symbolized in so many things! I love learning anything new, so this was a plus.
Negatives:
For the most part, it was very steady for me. The action and steam were just right. However, I would have liked to know a little bit more about Belinda’s history. I’m sure that there will even more coming with the next book. But I’m one of those readers that always needs to know a little more about the characters.
I admit, the description of the scientific “tests” that that crazy dude does got me a little. But that’s a personal trigger, not to be reflected on the author.
I think if you’re looking for a paranormal story full of sexy times, suspense, tension and even some love, this is perfect! I honestly look forward to reading more of Steffanie’s work. I even picked up another of her Crookshollow series. I consider it a big win when I not only read a book that keeps my attention, but I learn something new AND I want to read more from the author. If you can hook me on one book, you have gained a fan forever, Thank you to Steffanie and Hidden Gems for the copy of this book so I could provide you with a honest review. I loved it!
Staffanie Holmes is a new to me author with this new series that has twists, action, romance and intrigue. The Watcher was a different kind of read for me and it had my attention from the very first page.
🌶️ Boy does our baker girl take a lot of crap in this one.
Ever since bad boy Cole first walked into the bakery and met our girl he just can’t get her off of his mind. Unfortunately, as a Bran, a Raven shifter, Cole is a slave forced to serve his horrific master. But when Cole is told he has been sold to the vampire who killed his father he decides to take his life into his own hands and is injured while trying to fly away.
Forced down in a local park, surprise, it’s Belinda the baker gal to the rescue, picking up Cole’s injured Raven body and carrying him home. Imagine her shock to find out the injured bird she had brought home is actually the hot guy who has flirted with her in the bakery that day.
Cole needs to lie low, and in return for Belinda letting him hide at the bakery, he becomes her temporary assistant, and the sparks fly.
But both have secrets- Belinda’s last boyfriend took everything she owned and left with debts it will take her years to pay off, and Cole’s conscience tells him to leave before he hurts her worse than Ethan did. After all, what can a slave who cannot call his life his own ever offer her?
A wild ride that will leave you reaching for the next installment.
This is the first half of the story, which ends on a cliffhanger.
So, we have shapeshifter ravens called brans in this one. It turns out they are basically slaves & have a master they are bound to. Cole wants out, but needs help getting off the ring that binds him to a cruel master. Belinda is the owner of the bakery in Crookshollow, & is saddled with soul crushing debt thanks to her ex.
Not a bad story. Wild sex, but at least it's protected. Since they've know each other for like 2 days. Characters from the other stories make appearances. I guess I've got to keep reading to find out what happens...
Belinda is struggling to make ends meet after her ex ran off with all of her possessions. A biker walks into her bakery and says "you can get me off with those pretty lips, if you like" and our sweet Belinda is not in the least bit outraged. Quite the opposite, she finds this exceedingly charming. And that was when I knew this book just was not for me.
A bakery in trouble. A beautiful baker. A gorgeous man trapped as a raven. A prisoner to a human master. What is going happen in this story? You will have to read it and see, and it will be worth every minute.
Watcher is paranormal romance unlike any other I have read before. I have heard of wolf shifters, lion shifters, even a mouse shifter but never of a raven shifter. Believe me when I tell you a mix of hot male with biker appearance that is also a raven shifter is quite a mix. And our heroine is just too funny and cute. In my opinion, they complement each other perfectly. Nevertheless, let’s go back to the story first. Cole, raven shifter, has a cruel master who even dare to sell him off to a vampire. Cruel, right? Well, it seems he and our adorable patisserie, Belinda, have a lot in common in that department. She let a total jerk in her life, who ended up being also a thief that stole broke her heart and stole pretty much all her material possessions. He even dared to take away her clothes and her cat’s igloo. I don’t know if I should call that horrible or ridiculous but he did. Now she has a huge debt which would be paid in about 7 years and she is forced to deal with a 15 year old helping out in her bakery. The problem? The kid is obsessed with icing and believes that every pastry should have it in abundance. As you can see both, our hero and heroine, have their hands full with their lives, but faith can be quite persistence. One day, Cole is sent to her bakery to pick up a cake and that is all it took to ignite the spark that would seal their future forever. I have to say that even though this book is a romance, I believe the author add some scenes that are just too adorable and funny. I couldn’t help but laugh at how Cole enjoys teasing her and how she just blushed and follows his lead. Thought I am surprised she allowed someone into her heart after the huge broken heart that she was trying to nurse. It broke my heart to see how the spark when those two saw each other but he force himself to walk away because of his master, because he didn’t have the freedom to offer something to a woman like Belinda. However, I was snickering and smiling when faith decided that those two should meet again. Also, I was shouting at the book when I read more about that horrible master of Cole which gave every of his shifters a tattoo to control them. In my opinion, this book is the perfect mixture of mystery, mainly regarding Cole’s world, comedy, and a cute/hot romance. I was totally immersed by in front page one. Therefore, I wish to recommend it to paranormal romance lovers. Nevertheless, I wish to warn you that you wish to read the author’s Steffanie other Crookshollow series because it seems it and this book are connected. Also, be aware that this book promise to become the start of a new series, you can imagine what that implies. 5 <3 Reviewer of Romance Authors That Rock
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
This book is a bit of a departure from my usual reading; though I read a lot of paranormal romance I usually stick to the "typical" shifter stories with werewolves. I've never read an avian shifter books (I'm deathly afraid of birds so I avoid anything having to do with them LOL). I have to say that I really enjoyed this story though. It's about Belinda, a bakery owner that just got out of a horrible relationship where the guy literally took everything she owned when he left, and Cole, a raven shifter that wants nothing more to do with the family that owns him. Cole is a tattooed biker bad boy and Belinda is a shy and quiet baker, they are polar opposites, but hey opposites attract right? I love their pairing and I love that Belinda isn't your typical blond haired heroine that is so common in romance novels. Though I really like this book there were a few things that I didn't quite like; I was wanting a little bit more action maybe a few fight scenes, I think there might be a story that goes before this one, the author talks a lot about other characters in the book without giving them a real backstory so I think this might almost be a spin off (I'm going to go check so I can read the previous books if so) and the one that killed me...this book is a cliffhanger. I HATE cliffhangers and I don't see an exact date where the 2nd half of this book coming out so it just like ended with no resolution and I was just sitting there waiting like "where's the rest?!?". Overall I really did like this book and I will be most certainly reading the followup to this one; I think it's called Reaper and it says a release date of June 2016 and it's 6/21/16, so that gives a few days for me to wait.
Watcher A Raven Paranormal Romance by Steffanie Holmes
I enjoyed reading Watcher, it was a fun read. I caught myself laughing hysterical at some of the antics in this story. This story is about a baker named Belinda who had her world turned upside down by her thieving ex, Ethan who broke her heart and stole everything from her. Ethan skipped town and left her business in a tax bind that would take Belinda seven years to free herself from debt. In walks Cole, a tattooed biker dude. Cole shows up at Belindas bakery named Bewitching Bites. Belinda is smitten by Coles bad boy charm and can barely speak. Cole has his own problems to deal with but likes what he sees when he meets Belinda. Cole is a Raven Shifter/Bran/Slave and is trying to get free from his master.
You will enjoy this fast paced story and the relationship that forms between Cole and Belinda. The story ends with an exciting cliffhanger and we will have to read book 2 in the Crookshollow Ravens-Reaper to find out the conclusion.
I give Watcher 4 stars for its quick paced fun read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Paranormal Romance.
I love how different Steffanie Holmes stories tend to be from the rest out there. There are always plenty of twists and unique characters that really stay with you long after you are finished.
Watcher has a young woman struggling to keep up her business after her ex took off with her money. She meets Cole and is introduced to a whole new world of shifters. Cole is tied to his owner and is trying to escape and have his own future. He didn't expect to meet a woman like Belinda. Their attraction is immediate and is dangerous to both of them.
This book ends with a major cliff-hanger so be prepared to need to wait for the next one to see what is in store for this couple. It will definitely hook you and make you eager for the second part. I really liked the characters. I had a lot of respect for Belinda trying to make it work on her own. She has a lot of pride and is not afraid of hard work. Cole has not been close to others for a long time and is really changing as the story continues. They make a great couple.
Balinda owns Bewitching Bites, a local bakery in Crookshollow, working her fingers to the bone to keep it open. When she finds a hurt crow and brings it back to her apartment, she doesn’t expect it to change into Cole, the hot biker that came into her shop earlier that day.
This was a pretty good book. The ending definitely leaves you wanting to hurry and find the next part. I really liked Balinda. She’s been through a lot and is determined to keep the one thing that means the most to her. The only think that irked me was something that happens in paranormal books: After everything the character saw, she found it hard to believe there are witches. I’m not really sure how this could be impossible after seeing someone change into an animal and finding out about vampires. Overall it was a good book and I look forward to reading the sequel.
**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review
Watcher (Crookshollow Ravens #1) by Steffanie Holmes. 4 out of 5 stars. An interesting two-part story about Raven shifters. Cole has been a slave to his master all his life and now his master is going to sell him to another to help fund his laboratory experiments. It's a last resort to run away before it happens, but the deal has already been made. Belinda is a baker that has had her heart broken when her boyfriend turned out to be into money laundering, did over some businesses and cleared out her apartment before skipping town, leaving her with nothing and having to pick up a massive bill for his debts. I've already ordered part two of this so I can carry on reading where it left off. It's a book you won't want to put down until it's finished! And I highly recommend it to all that are interested in Shifters (especially ravens and fox's), Witches and Magic, Paranormal Fantasy and Romance.

Oh I absolutely loved this book, Cole Erikson is a Bran, a raven shifter, who is in servitude to a despicable master that has sold him to a dangerous vampire. He was sent on errands to Crookshollow one being to get a cake from the bakery when he sees Belinda Wu the owner of the bakery he is instantly attracted to her.
I really loved the interaction between Cole and Belinda his banter with her on the first meeting was priceless yes a bit inappropriate but so cute. Belinda's back story is so sad her ex Ethan took everything even her clothes leaving her working 80 hours a week to stay afloat barely.
This book has so much going on it is mysterious, sexy, exciting and heartbreaking as well, it ends with a cliffhanger but so so very worth the read I cannot wait to read the next book!!!
Belinda owns a bakery shop and is down on her luck after an ex stole all her money. She rescues an injured raven who turns out to be Cole, a raven shifter, and a slave. He ran away after his master sold him to a vicious vampire. Belinda and Cole must find a way to break the bond the master has on him, while staying alive and avoiding both his old and new master. The masters know where Cole is, and Belinda is now in danger. Can he keep her safe from two masters seeking revenge? I felt so sorry for Belinda. After her ex stole from her, she had almost nothing left. Just the bakery and very little furniture in her apartment. She has been hiding her financial woes from her friends, and is persevering, trying to get out of debt. Even though Cole is a slave, he is cocky, self assured, and fearless. Together they are strong.
First of all, great start to the book. I laughed and I thought it was a great funny way to begin the journey into a book I have not yet read.
I liked Belinda's story and I liked that she was strong and somewhat a little desperate. I know, weird of me. But it worked.
Also, I loved the guy, in a weird way. Because his first words were NOT one I would have liked to hear. He had something though. The author did a good job projecting the secrets he exhibited.
What I didn't like in the start was her friend. I mean, you'd think she would not have jumped right on him when Belinda blushed. Or that she'd had to say the man was a criminal and said to her friend to stay away. That kinda didn't sit well with me.
Anyway, this book was good and the author did a really good job.

I received this ARC for an honest review. I love this book. This is the first full novel by Steffanie Holmes that I have read. I am looking forward to reading her Fox series. Watcher is about a down on her luck baker. Belinda has had literally EVERYTHING stolen from her by her scumbag ex. Cole falls into her life (actually falls) and makes it his goal to change how she thinks about herself. I love the references to Odin, the master of ravens. I enjoy how Cole struggles to understand how anyone could love him. Even though I don't care for books with cliff hangers, the way Watcher is written leaves me wanting to read the next book. I have had books that the cliff hangers left me so p****d that I never read that author again. Keep up the great work Steffanie.
I don't read a lot of shifter romances, so this was a nice change of pace for me. Belinda Wu, baker and owner of Bewitching Bites, is a feisty little heroine that refuses to give up on getting back the life she had before her ex robbed her blind. Cole Erickson, is a sexy, tattooed raven shapeshifter, desperate to be free from his human master. When a break for freedom goes wrong, Belinda rescues the wounded raven, not realizing at first that it's Cole. Drawn together from the first, Belinda and Cole give in to their desire for each other while trying to stay alive long enough to end the spell keeping Cole prisoner. This book ends on a cliff-hanger, but luckily, the second book is now available. This book is a great read. I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story of a lady cleaned out and stripped of everything by a con artist. She is unable to let go and open herself up to the possibilities there may be someone out there nothing like the man who ripped out her heart and ate it. And in walks Cole. Her world is now spinning out of control. Wanting to know more because try as she might she can't bring herself to run away. A nice enjoyable read about life sending you lemons and choosing to make lemonade. Belinda and Cole are both ready to go all in, the problem is their past will it let them go and move on? Great characters and some we have met before.
Deceived by her Ethan-boyfriend, Belinda Wu was trying to survive. Cole Erikson was a Brand, a shapeshifter who turns to a raven. When he met Belinda the attraction between them was strong but he had promised himself that he would not involve with anyone emotionally while he was still a slave. He was a danger to her but he already had broken his number-one rule-don’t get attached and he can’t go back. Many twists in this story full of mystery, danger, suspense, emotions, amusing dialogs, passionate scenes, evil characters and a cliffhanger that left me waiting for more. Liked the interesting and entertaining plot development with raven shifters that intrigued me.
I really enjoyed this book. I hadn't read a book about raven shifters before so I liked the author's glimpse into their existence and how they live in servitude to their masters, bound by powerful magic.
Cole and Belinda were so great together - equal parts sweet and hot - as they tried to help each other move past their pasts.
The book was fast paced and had some twists I didn't expect - including one massive cliffhanger. I can't see what's in store next for them.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really fun shifter book and had it all -- bad guys, good guys, sexy baker and lots of intrigue. I enjoyed learning Cole's backstory and how brans had been working for centuries for important families. I felt bad that he was suffering and was glad Belinda showed up in his life. They made a great pair (after the initial confusion of a naked man in Belinda's apartment). Very satisfying read. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through Hidden Gems. All thoughts and words contained here are entirely my own.
I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Belinda is barely holding on to her bakery after her ex left her and took everything. She goes for a walk in the park and rescues an injured raven. She plans to take the raven to the local vet, but the raven turns into a man, and not just any man, he is the biker the was in her bakery. Belinda and Cole are instantly attracted to each other, but they both have to overcome some obstacles in order to even think about having a relationship. Sexy and exciting, fantastic book.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I loved it and couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Steffanie uses great strong characters and a strong story line. I can't wait to read more from Steffanie Holmes. You will love reading about Cole and Belinda. Will they find their way to be together?
An interesting tale about shifters. Even though parts of the story are predictable, there is enough twists to keep you interested and reading longer than you intended. It is a fast paced tale, that ends to soon. I enjoyed it and am eager to read the next book.
This is the first book I have read from this author and loved all the twist, action and romance that is in it. It is not often that shifter books branch off into other animal forms and I was happy to see that it was done here. Definitely want to read what happens next
I'm glad it says it has a cliff hanger in the description. I bought both books. Can't wait to read the next one. Who would of thought bringing home an injured raven would cause so much trouble?
