A fine conclusion to this mini-series of comics. I overall wasn’t too impressed with this run. The pacing was weird, the flashbacks and present day story were all over the place, and Ivan was an absolute creep to read about.
I think my only positive responses to this series are that the art style grew on me a lot in the last two issues. I found myself looking at the art more thoroughly than I did issues #1 and #2. I also liked Natasha’s red room background and origin story, which is a big part of why I’m so interested in reading more on Nat’s comic background.
My other complaint is there wasn’t enough Bucky. Love Winterwidow and I adore Bucky, and I was sad that I didn’t get as much of him as I was expecting. Overall, pretty mid comic run, and not something I’ll ever be excited to reread.
"you could join me. ive been getting my own plans together. big plans. we still work together. im still your guy in europe arent i? youve had your chance to be natalia for the world. maybe it's time to go back to being my little natasha." ivan, ew.
talking with steve during civil war "betrayal! thats what this is! steve, please...! thats why i wanted this meeting. to explain to you... why i cant take your side. i doesnt mean ive chosen stark over you. men always think-- i dont. i just think he's right. people with powers have to take responsibility, to work together. ive seen the avengers ripped apart so many times! so... now youre for ideology? for tony's controlling concept of the state? because you want to stop getting hurt. thats all you stand for? a cycle of abuse? that sounds like you giving up. if you really believed this, you wouldnt talk about how history shaped you. youd just say youd decided. youre free natalia/ youre the one who had to fight hardest for that. youve never needed a man to tell you. damn you. you knwo how tired i am. listen, even if it turns out im on the wrong side, it makes sense for me to stay close to tony-- so then ... you can betray him too? im sorry there was no ther way to say it."
"a journey throug the pain youve caused... a visit to every failed relationship. all those men who werent me... before i finally let you die. that was my plan for you, 'tasha. thats why i told you about icepick. but you had to go and ruin that too."
"she is like me. she goes with the side she most likes."
"you do realize thats your only continuing belief-- that you and i shouldnt be together?"
flashbacks about fighting punisher with daredevil, yelena being manipulated and working with bucky to honor cap
"how fragile do you think i sm? what you did to me with the nanites... it didnt reveal somw tawdry truth about who i am. it says more about you. about the shape you wanted to twist me into. so you could feel better about me rejecting you. you say i pick sides. i pick good guys. i pick winners. i pick regret and kindness and mercy."
she met red guardian "im so sorry natalia thats all i needed to hear. those of us who took the serum...our sheer age makes us see the world differently. the best we can hope for is to treat each other gently. natalia. it pleases me to think that is the distant future youll still be alive. and youll still be extraordinary."
"natasha! please! switching off the lights doesnt really make much difference to me now, 'tasha! it does to me."
political commentary
"this is your last chance. to say sorry. or at least to call me by my real name."
"and what the hell, an evacuation alarm... i feel merciful today. vodka. of course there is. to ivan petrovich bezukhov... as promised-- a toast. and thats all."
good finale, you actually get backstory on nat and the difference between calling her natasha and natalia
