The platinum standard for hiring, coaching and keeping top talent. Based on the best-selling hardcover book, Topgrading, by Bradford D. Smart, Ph.D., this quick-read version highlights the essential elements for building a team of "A" players. You'll learn how to improve your hiring and promotion success rate dramatically using Topgrading tools and techniques to recruit, screen, interview, and check references of job candidates.
Nice ideas, but a bit heartless. It's also a commercial for the author's products. Not much learning in here without buying the DVDs and consulting hours.
The key takeaway here is that references are important. Don’t skip this step, as a good reputation is not the same as strong credentials. Someone who has earned the trust of others is a much better indicator of future job performance than what’s written on paper.
So apparently if you interview someone for 4 hours instead of 30 minutes you get better results... and if you ask them about what they've done instead of what they will do you get more honest answers... Guess its good stuff to keep in mind nonetheless.
I will say this book earned itself an extra 0.5 stars because it does remind that like anything else, interviewing is a skill that you can improve.
Overly simplistic, reductionist, and obvious, Topgrading is the unimaginative management strategy of the widget-tinkerer.
If you want to learn to inspire passionate people who share your vision and ensure that they stay you can read better books.
