December 19, 2022as soon as i get even remotely attached to any character in this series, sui ishida makes it his business to either brutally kill them off or have them secretly turn out to be absolutely DESPICABLE. i’m not saying this is his personal vendetta against *me* specifically, but i have taken it very personally nonetheless

Uno de los mayores misterios de Tokyo Ghoul es Arima. Alguien superior, fuerte y muy respetado; al que todos admiran y al que quisieran poder llegarle a los talones. Su primera impresión es la de ser cruel, callado y eficaz. Demasiado. Todo un misterio lo que piensa o pasa por su cabeza.
Kishou Arima fue para mí el principal villano y antagonista de esta historia, y hay algo que se siente tan absurdamente triste en su origen que me deja shockeado. La verdad no me esperaba el plot twits pero si venía preguntándome desde el inicio como un ser humano "común y corriente" como Arima podía hacerle frente a tantos ghouls en batalla. Siendo incluso superior a muchos de estos, que sin duda le temían.
Bueno, pues la respuesta a eso está en este tomo y también a la identidad y significado de "El Rey de un Ojo".

In the sequel series to Tokyo Ghoul, Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching his special squad of half-ghouls how to be outstanding Investigators, but this is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his subordinates and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Will he and the members of his squad become heroes or monsters, taken out by the other squads in the Commission of Counter Ghoul...?!
For any reader following the Tokyo Ghoul franchise this is probably their favorite volume so far in the Tokyo Ghoul:re series... Arima seriously pulls no punches and basically takes us out with a right hook his twists and reveals are so out of this world. WOAH! I did not see that coming and I don't think Haise/Ken did either!! At least he knows where his enemies are and can now form a different game plan. This seems like the start of the final arc, but I can see that it could still go on for many volumes (and checking I find that it hits 16 volumes before the finale!) At the heart though is Haise/Ken and no matter if you start in the first series or this series he is who you root for, its he who you want to succeed!
In the last couple of volumes I have been admittedly confused... and I've sussed out a way to understand better... READ the intro pages. I've actually never had to in other series but the switches between characters happens a ton between volumes so actually reading every square and matching the portraits up with the characters in the story frames seriously helps! I actually figured out who some of the fighters were and with the reveals from Arima understood their implications too!! What can I say, but this is a seriously complex manga, on level with a 600 page novel in story depth...
The art in Tokyo Ghoul:re vol 8 goes into HIGH GEAR! We have double page spreads that are dynamite and have an intimacy that has been hard to harness up until this volume. Also the battles stay in frenetic fashion while being a touch more clear as to what is going on. Just subtle shifts in the art that shows that visual storytelling can be jacked up even this late into a series!! It's so, so good... I was beginning to feel like this series wasn't for me but Tokyo Ghoul:re vol 8 really changed my mind and made me fall for the series!
So the plot... Loved it! I just enjoy how ghouls are everywhere... and we learn everything from so many directions... Really Sui Ishida just plops us into whatever POV will help us to understand and which will create the most compelling reveal! This story is for anyone who loves a great twist (because Sui Ishida keeps them coming and coming and coming, and coming even when you don't think he can possibly fool you any more.) I am a little puzzled about where some of the characters went?! They just disappeared, but I feel like the answers are probably in the next volume (which is what I need, right now!!)
Tokyo Ghoul:re vol 8 really changed my entire perspective of the Tokyo Ghoul universe... I've always been a fan of Haise and that hasn't changed a bit even though he's had major challenges to his identity... Now with his mentor leaving him with a huge undertaking his entire world is about to implode even more! Pick up this series!! Especially if you enjoy zombies with brains and mega twists...

Volume 8 of Tokyo Ghoul:re shows the best in the manga, this volume is a great example of all that I love about this series, namely, creepily beautiful visual, roller-coaster of a plot, heart-breaking and tearful moments. My understanding of the events turned upside down on several plot points. Such well-delivered plot-twists.

Oh man some major moments and major players taken out here. I can't even go into too much detail without spoilers but the showdown against the CGC and Kankei comes to a head. The reveal of the one eyed king is here. We learn what RE means. Oh so much fantastic stuff int his volume and the best to date for Tokyo Ghoul RE.

I like the interaction between Keneki and Arima and the explanation about the Garden project, so the conspiracy is a bit better explained than the anime series, at least that's how it feels to me.
There are hints about a certain character getting even more mentally unstable, I wonder how it will turn out later.
I like how Toyka etc fought with the CCG agencies!

Awesome. Simply awesome.
I wouldn't consider Tokyo Ghoul:re as a horror manga, but this volume changed my mind. It's very dark, scary and sad.

AND KANEKI, AFTER SEEING HIDE IN HIS HEAD, IS REBORN, IN ALL HIS FUCKING GLORIOUS WHITE HAIR!! YES!!! AT LAST!!!!! I WAITED 8 VOLUMES FOR HIM & HIS BEAUTIFUL WHITE HAIR!! IF SHU COULD SEE HIM NOW!! Eto gets free & ram-fucking-pages!!! YES, I like her! And she goes after Furata, intending to eat the bastard but stops last minute. On Rue island, we see Torso’s past & it’s actually rather tragic but then he’s going to maybe kill Mutsuki and she kills him, just like she killed her family & the cat & she’s had so many issues - & she fucks up Torso’s body & mutilates him :O - Juuzou encounters Kurona (on of the Black & White Sisters - the other died from Juuzou’s wounds last time & Kurona put Shiro’s face on her skin or something….she took Shiro into herself…so she ate her or something, but kept her alive inside her?? weird shit man) -Eto is fucked up by that guy Furata - he had Dr. Kanou operate on him & got some of Rize’s kagune - and Kaneki finally strikes Arima a blow but Arima can still fight with a broken quinque - & they come to a standstill; Kaneki has no intention of killing him OMGG WHY - & ARIMA STABS HIMSELF OR SOME SHIT & REVEALS THEY’RE EXPERIMENTS TOO & ARE DEMI-HUMANS - THE ONE-EYED GHOULS BORN OF HUMANS & GHOULS ARE RARE & OTHER CHILDREN THAT ARE BORN ARE ALMOST NORMAL EXCEPT THAT THEY HAVE SUPERIOR PHYSICAL ABILITIES & SHORTER LIFE SPANS & THIS IS IT FOR ARIMA :O :O WHAAATTT - IN THE CCG MARUDE ALSO DISCOVERS THE WASHU ARE THE “V” AND ARE GHOULS - LIKE ARIMA FROM THE “GARDEN” - SO THE CCG IS BASICALLY RUN BY WASHUU, A GHOUL FAMILY. DAMNNN. AND ARIMA IS GLAD TO DIE & SAYS TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE KANEKI KILLED HIM - & THAT KANEKI WILL FIGURE OUT WHAT ARIMA WANTED. OMG. Touch, Yolo, Ayato & Hinami run into more CCG while trying to escape Cochlea. And the O Squad shows up where Kaneki is with Arima’s body to assist him in his escape as by Arima’s orders :O Kaneki says his farewell to Arima & it’s a strange moment because despite all the pain Arima caused him, Kaneki still loved him in a weird way. They leave & run into Etc, who says Kaneki’s already fulfilled her request to kill the King & that she & the King kept the throne warm - Juuzou kills Shiro & now both Black & White Sisters are dead. And Akira is locked in battle with Takizawa.

Quattro stelle e mezzo per questo volume che mi ha quasi fatto piangere alla fine.
L’ho divorato perché volevo sapere, perché i combattimenti si inseguono uno dietro l’altro ed è difficile staccarsi dal volume. Ma poi sono andata a rileggermi dei pezzi, perché volevo capire bene.
Come sempre ci sono tanti piccoli riferimenti, piccoli indizi che se non li analizzi bene si rischia di perdere qualche collegamento. In ogni caso è difficile stargli dietro, per cui ho deciso che lo leggo con il cuore. Con il senno di poi rileggo e comprendo, più o meno.
Questa storia è un puzzle, ed è difficile mettere insieme tutto i pezzi se non alla fine.
Nel frattempo mi serbo nel cuore questo momento perché è stato davvero toccante questo volume.
Interrompo un po’, ho bisogno di un momento per riprendermi, ma poi lo riprendo, perché ho anche bisogno di sapere di più!

This is a review of the entire series.
Tokyo Ghoul begins with a streak of incredibly bad luck disguised as good luck. Reports of strange murders involving cannibalism and monster attacks have been haunting the city of Tokyo. What started as rumors quickly becomes reality as more and more victims show up dead. The creatures behind the attacks are believed to be ghouls. They don’t quite fit the normal definition of ghouls, they’re not hideous, rotting, undead monstrosities. They look like humans, they talk like humans, they act and even pretend to eat like normal humans, there’s no way of telling a ghoul from a human until you end up as their next meal. Ken Kaneki and his childhood friend Hide continue to laugh the incidents off as superstitious rumors and continue about their daily life as they normally would.
Things start to seem too good to be true when the shy and socially awkward bookworm Kaneki scores a date with the girl of his dreams, a beautiful, mature and intelligent young woman named Rize. Not only is Rize completely out of Kaneki’s league, but she also happens to share his infatuation with complex horror literature and philosophy. Things seem to be going unusually well for Kaneki, but it turns out that his lovely date is only interested in his body—eating his body, to be more specific. (And not in the hot kinky way either.)
Rize is not only an extremely dangerous ghoul, but she’s what’s known as a binge eater; ghouls that kill and consume without remorse or concern of the population or the safety of other ghouls. She’s the one responsible for most of the brutal killings and cannibalism incidents in the area and poor Kaneki just so happens to be her latest target. Just like that, a dream date quickly descends into a bloody nightmare as Kaneki is nearly tortured to death by Rize in an empty construction site where no one can hear his cries of pain.
Kaneki seems to get lucky when Rize slams him around the construction site and ends up knocking a large hunk of metal down on herself from all the destruction she caused, and ends up killing herself by accident just before she can deliver the final blow to Kaneki. The commotion causes a disturbance in the neighborhood and police are called to investigate the scene. The nearly dead Kaneki is rushed to the hospital along with the corpse of the bloodthirsty ghoul Rize so her organs can be transplanted into Kaneki.
All’s well that ends well, right? Wrong. The streak of bad luck continues. The morally questionable rescue of Kaneki ends up transforming him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid because of the ghoul organs implanted in his body. Losing his taste for his favorite foods, developing violent urges and twisted desires to consume the flesh of his fellow humans, Kaneki is forcefully pulled into the demented underworld of ghoul society which has existed alongside human society for many years in secret.
Kaneki has no choice but to adapt to the ways of the ghouls if he wants to survive, all while keeping his identity a secret and trying to live a normal human life. Thus begins a tragic horror story where a psychologically tortured boy is constantly exposed to the worst aspects of human nature and the savagery of ghoul society. Is Kaneki the first ever outcast that doesn’t belong to human or ghoul society, or is he the first and only person that has the potential to bring the two clashing societies together? Kaneki begins to realize that there’s more to the incident with Rize and the surgery that changed him forever, and he slowly unravels the secrets of the nastiest ghouls and the most corrupt humans working in mysterious ways behind the scenes. After a while, you’ll begin to question who the real monsters are.
Caught between two dangerous worlds, Kaneki grows through immeasurable suffering, bridging the gap between humans and ghouls by learning to love and fear them in equal measure. Tokyo Ghoul builds an emotional story about morality, discrimination and self-discovery. It utilizes the literary themes of Kafka such as metamorphosis and the exploration of absolute gray morality.
Kaneki’s development is literally an emotional roller coaster. He goes through so many changes in beliefs, morals, personality and identity that he struggles to keep track of who he really is as all of the different sides of himself constantly try to conquer and slaughter each other in his severely fractured brain. He can’t decide if he wants to fight against humans for the sake of the ghouls, to fight against ghouls for the sake of humans, or try to come up with some crazy master plan to fight against both of them or neither of them in order to find a way to stop the conflict between all sides once and for all. All these confusing thoughts and morals create a storm inside him and the greatest conflict of all is perhaps the conflict of Kaneki’s own conflicted sense of identity.
Overall, the story has a strong start that immediately throws you into a dark and twisted drama, a tedious middle section that's held back by pacing issues, poorly explained terminology and too many unimportant side characters that don’t get nearly enough development or screen time, but it gets back on its feet with a really strong final few arcs that leave you with many questions and potential answers regarding human morality. It has an impressively large cast connected by limitless plot twists and clever intricacies, deep protagonists with many layers, flashy fight scenes with unique weapons and bodily horror mechanics called Kagune, and it pulls on the heartstrings as you slowly begin to realize that humans and ghouls have a lot more in common than either one would care to admit.

Caught between two dangerous worlds, Kaneki grows through immeasurable suffering, bridging the gap between humans and ghouls by learning to love and fear them in equal measure. Tokyo Ghoul builds an emotional story about morality, discrimination and self-discovery. It utilizes the literary themes of Kafka such as metamorphosis and the exploration of absolute gray morality.
Kaneki’s development is literally an emotional roller coaster. He goes through so many changes in beliefs, morals, personality and identity that he struggles to keep track of who he really is as all of the different sides of himself constantly try to conquer and slaughter each other in his severely fractured brain. He can’t decide if he wants to fight against humans for the sake of the ghouls, to fight against ghouls for the sake of humans, or try to come up with some crazy master plan to fight against both of them or neither of them in order to find a way to stop the conflict between all sides once and for all. All these confusing thoughts and morals create a storm inside him and the greatest conflict of all is perhaps the conflict of Kaneki’s own conflicted sense of identity.
Overall, the story has a strong start that immediately throws you into a dark and twisted drama, a tedious middle section that's held back by pacing issues, poorly explained terminology and too many unimportant side characters that don’t get nearly enough development or screen time, but it gets back on its feet with a really strong final few arcs that leave you with many questions and potential answers regarding human morality. It has an impressively large cast connected by limitless plot twists and clever intricacies, deep protagonists with many layers, flashy fight scenes with unique weapons and bodily horror mechanics called Kagune, and it pulls on the heartstrings as you slowly begin to realize that humans and ghouls have a lot more in common than either one would care to admit.

How can I properly describe my state of mind after reading this, except "WTF WAS THAT??"
I mean, this plot just delivered on a long game, and I am talking like a really long game. I am not even going to count how many twists were there, because then we'd be here all day. Mostly I expected this to be completely about the epic battle between the yet-again-newly-changed Kaneki and the Undefeated Arima (because there have been multiple-chapter-spanning-battles before), but this was also about the smaller players in this game. It called on some older characters, put the focus on some minor characters, and gave some other characters (especially the female ones) their time to shine. And THEN it also flipped the known world of this manga.
As two operations go on simultaneously - the attack on Aogiri at Rushima, and the attack on Cochlea - there are smaller battles happening. Each of them are given their due, even if the characters may be minor. One of the Aogiri tree's members, Mazi's backstory is explained as a way of explaining more of ghoul societies; she then proceeds to have an epic battle with one of Suzuya's underlings and this battle is one of wits too, as both try to get an upperhand with surprise moves. You'd think with a major raid or fight happening every volume, it would all start to get repetitive but there's never a boring moment. Kaneki's creative strategies to disarm Arima were just brilliant. And then there was Arima spilling some truth tea and I was like, OMG this doesn't make sense but also then it kinda does?! Like, what a risk to take, what a game to play!
On the character side, we learn about Naki (who is probably the only comic relief left in this dark pit of a horror manga) and his White Suits, and his awkward introduction to Mazi. Heck, there's even Marude having to kill someone he has known for a long time. Then we have Torso's childhood backstory (gee what a surprise it was terrible), and then Tooru's memories come out (Kaneki style!) while deep in trauma: both quite messed up, and both with different ways of coping. Abused kids having a propensity for violence is practically the theme for this manga, and the violence just gets too creative (I can't believe I am saying this, but poor Urie). And meanwhile, Kaneki is having to fight a person who is a father figure to him, and that just nearly broke my heart?
Verdict: I really should take a break after this volume, but I can't stop now.

I did not expect that this was the moment where Kaneki get his white hair back.
The entire volume was just Arima and Kaneki's fight scene. That was the most heartbreaking thing ever. Even at the end of his life, Arima is still very politically minded. Obviously, his death would be a stepping point for Kaneki in controlling both humans and ghouls.
Kaneki and Arima just found each other. Here I thought we're gonna give a lil' bit of happiness for him. A dad, a mum, and four children and that lasted.... one chapter? Here's to hoping....for better things yet to come.
