It’s been three months since the team were instructed to stay off the mountain, and Christian is going a little stir crazy. Until one rainy afternoon an object crashes into the water in Singing Bear Village, creating temporary chaos and confusion in the peaceful lakeside community. Given past events, Christian and his crew call Ogden, and their boss brings a specialized team to take over the situation, shutting out local law enforcement.
But Sheriff Myles Murphy doesn’t like being shut out, and is furious to have his authority superseded. Christian assures his boss that he can handle the local sheriff and assuage his suspicions, but it won’t be so easy. Because while Christian has harbored a secret crush on the man for two years, Sheriff Myles Murphy despises him.
Author Darien Cox lives in New England and enjoys using romantic fiction to explore the intensity, insanity, humor, and chaos that accompanies cupid’s arrow.
There's more to Christian than tight jeans and crazy antics. Christian has had a crush on Sheriff McSexy for two years; he just has a funny way of showing it.
Myles isn't sure he can deal with Christian's brand of crazy, but when he comes face to face with Christian's cock, he changes his mind.
Of course, Myles has no idea what he's getting into, and Christian doesn't want a relationship built on lies. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much of a choice.
There's an "angry nasty" on the loose, and the suspense is cranked up high. The plot continues from the first book, so this one won't make much sense as a standalone.
We see more of Baz, who is growing as a character. I hope he gets his own story, although I suspect Elliot's story is next.
There's plenty of steam and a strong HFN. I liked book one more because the relationship between Myles and Christian felt a little forced to me. Christian comes across as a pushover. He practically begs Myles to date him; that kind of insecurity isn't sexy.
I'm going with four stars because this series is compulsively readable, steamy, and fun.
I really consider Darien Cox to be one of my "crack" authors at this point. If he writes it, I will read it. This is not a standalone, and will make little sense if you haven't read Book 1.
The chemistry in this book was smokin'! Christian has had a crush on Sheriff Myles for a while, but has kept his distance since he sees nothing but disdain in Myles's eyes. Christian takes advantage of an opportunity and comes on a little strong. But once they hit go, these boys burn the sheets up!
When honesty means so much to one MC, and the other has no choice but to lie, the relationship could be crashing before it gets off the ground. But both of these men acknowledge that there is something about the other that NEITHER can stay away from. And once Christian is able to completely share details, things begin to accelerate for them.
Baz is back and he is more lovable than ever! He has a stronger and more prevalent role in this book, almost making me think he could get his own book......??? I don't think I wanna go there, but it was cute to see his little crush on "chrischris."
Fans of book 1 should definitely jump on this one immediately. If you haven't read this series yet, I would definitely recommend.
Darien Cox is a genius. He's the only author that managed to make me care for, no scratch that....to make me ABSOLUTELY LOVE a sci-fi book. I adore the world he created. I loved the MCs, their chemistry and their romance.
But above all, I loved Baz. Baz gets all the stars.
Reread Feb 2019 Just like the first read, I felt this wasn’t as good as book 1. Still really enjoyed it. Love how the alien situation get trickier by the second. Onto book 3 now!
Original review:
If you thought there was plenty of action and handfuls of the supernatural in the first book, you will be amazed what book 2 offers! The whole plot just got infinitely more complex. And no need to say I was completely sucked into it, turning pages like mad.
This time we get Christian and Myles's story against the background of the continuing (very exciting) plot. Again it's an outsider falling in love with one of the team. Again, there are lots of lies and untruths because honesty about the facts is simply impossible.
What makes things worse is that Myles is the sheriff - a guy who upholds the law and values the truth and the safety of the village above anything. But of course this is the only thing Christian can't offer. No need to say that this causes mistrust and countless problems. And it hurts because Christian is desperate to have some kind of 'normal' in his life, and he has fallen for Myles big time.
But Myles is incredibly stubborn. Tbh I did not understand that he, as a sheriff, doesn't have more understanding for Christian's inability to tell him the truth. Surely he, before other people, would have given him some kind of slack once he finds out that Christian has a secret government file and is working for some kind of government agency. But no, he still gives Christian a hard time.
And, what irked me even more - once Myles is taken into the fold, he doesn't believe a single word. And when he's proven wrong, he NEVER apologizes to Christian for doubting him. He should have blooming eaten humble pie. But Christian is just so happy that Myles is willing to love him despite all his "work shit", he doesn't even mind.
Still, these two are just as hot as Rudy and TJ (although, I liked the latter relationship a little bit better) Can't wait to see what happens with Nolan and Elliott. No idea how these two could possibly fit together?
And of course there is Baz. How can you not love that guy? I just wanted to hug him. (no chance of that, I'm tiny and he is huge, I would most likely just get a grab of his knee caps. LOL!)
This is a fabulous series in a genre I wouldn't normally read. So, if you're like me - I'd like to encourage you to give this a try! It is really brilliantly written and I just love all the characters, and the fun and the banter they're having.
Aaaaahhh this series is so goddamn good! I can't handle it. I read this in one sitting, which means I didn't move from my bed for hours. HOURS. The plot is fast-paced and I was turning every page like omg omg omg what's going on omg omg.
I love Darien's characters, so throw their banter and overall sexiness into a fun sci-fi plot and I'm all over it.
And Baz is the fucking best. I better get a Baz story or I'm hunting Darien DOWN.
The romance between Christian and Myles was so hot and they are my favorite couple in this series so far. I love this book even more than I love the first one. Baz was so sweet and seemed to be more human in this one, too. He needs his own love story.
I'm not usually a fan of sci/fi but there's something about this village and it's visitors that I find strangely fascinating. This edition, in particular, was quite gripping. Of course, it's the romance I read for and the romance between Christian and Myles was very sweet with a tad of spice. I loved Christian and his crazy, big personality and Myles, the more conservative sheriff who was just trying to keep his villagers safe.
The big scene-stealer, once again, is Baz. I adored him so much, especially after his conversation with Myles near the end. I'm desperately hoping that the author will find some way to give him his well-deserved HEA ...
This was a pretty solid story. I was honestly expecting worse because of other reviews that complained about Myles, which made me weary for a long time, because this didn't sound as fun as the blurb said - some hate to love action going on (on Myles part).
But I have to say I liked Myles. I didn't quite love him like I did Christian, but he wasn't as bad as I'd thought he'd be. He was a little annoying sometimes, and his almost constant need to push for the truth from Christian got tiring at times. But it was understandable, as well as his reactions about aliens.
Is it frustrating? Yes, but it was understandable behavior from Myles for me, and he wasn't too rude or that big of an ass about anything.
And I just know that if I started seeing something, and they had this big secret they wouldn't tell me, and then when they do, it's apparently aliens, when I myself have seen no evidence of it? Or at least things that can be explained away as something of this earth? Then hell yeah I'd be skeptical and think they were fucking with me.
Myles completely believes it once he DOES have an encounter with an alien, like there was undeniable proof in front of his eyes, so I think Myles' journey to acceptance or what have you was fine. Not everyone is so easily accepting, as much as it would make it easy between Myles and Christian if he believed right away.
(Hell, Scully was skeptical for years and people love Mulder and Scully, so...;))
Anyway, aside from the Myles issue, I liked this. The story was interesting, and I did like Myles and Christian together. My only issue, really, is that I didn't exactly love them together. There was chemistry, but it wasn't coming off the page too well, it wasn't all that scorching for me. Maybe because Christian having to lie and not tell Myles the truth of anything until the end was such a big issue for them that they rarely got to have moments of just getting to know each other and fall in love. I didn't quite feel like they were at the love stage when they said it.
I personally just wish we had gotten more of just them together, without the lies and the alien shit coming between them. It dampened their chemistry, in my opinion.
I loved Christian and very much enjoyed Myles on their own, though, as characters, and I loved seeing the other characters too. And they were enjoyable together, but not as much as I would have liked, is my main issue.
Also yes, I love Baz too. He's awesome, and I want to see him meet someone too. He's cute and sweet and deserves to have someone.
The plot was interesting too and did carry a good portion of the story. This was, overall, a pretty good story.
I'm fairly excited to read Elliot and Nolan's story, too...hope that it's good :D
All the freakin stars!! ☆ Okay. ☆ Thank you, D. (^з^)-☆
It’s been three months since the team were instructed to stay off the mountain, and Christian is going a little stir crazy... ! *clicks pause* It's important to note that Christian is one of my ALLTIME favorite guys! He's funny, sweet and all around wonderful. *swoon*
Honestly, he rocks that shit.
I admit, I had to warm up towards Myles (mostly because I didn't want to share Christian, heh) but eventually he proved to be a good match for my guy. They have SIZZLING chemistry, all right.
- sigh -
I'll always be a little jealous that I can't be in the book (it's a good thing though, I'd be such a creepy stalker, haha).
Deep in Your Shadows picks up right where Safe in Your Fire ended. It's just as much fun hanging out with the gang as it was the first time, and I can only imagine it will get more interesting and intense as we go along.
This installment wasn't as creepy as the first, but fear not, the aliens are watching! And just like the previous story, this one pulls you right in and won't let you go.
Hope we won't have to say goodbye to the crew any time soon!! I can't get enough of THOSE GUYS (and adorable aliens)!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Darien Cox has fast become one of my (very few) absolute favorite authors! I adore all of his books, honest, and The Village series has a special place in my heart. As I mentioned in my other review: You won't find me re-reading a book often but Darien's characters are (pretty much always) insta-favorites of mine and I enjoy revisiting them from time to time.
So yes, This book was EVERYTHING! - This series is EVERYTHING :) I'm looking forward to see the boys again, so, happy writing! x
Singing Bear Village is a crazy place. In this book, we got to know Sheriff Myles a little better and saw more of our friendly neighborhood ET, Baz. I don't want to speak much about the story because the spoiler risk is high, but I found the goings on in Book 2 kept my attention and made me look forward to Book 3 without setting up an obnoxious (or any kind of) cliffhanger.
Relationship stuff: it was great to see Rudy and JT again. I liked the interactions between Rudy and Christian, particularly how Christian listened and applied what he was told. And the bromance with JT and Christian was strong. I loathed Michelle and to a lesser degree, Nolan. At the end of the last book, I was thinking dafuq, Michelle?! And in this update, I was about to snatch her baldheaded. I think the only Darien Cox book that would not be an auto-buy for me will be if Michelle gets her own book. Nope.
So Myles and Christian. Their chemistry was hot, I totally felt them together in that way. I think they were even better than JT and Rudy in that category and that's high praise. I also liked where they ended up and also how they almost couldn't help but check in with the other as the crazy went down. It went a little sideways for me when they talked because (i) Christian seemed less like himself, more needy and insecure, and (ii) Myles seemed like a bit of a dick. It might have been because of the external forces that were forcing them into exaggerated reactions. It seemed like Christian went from crush to all in and Mykes was just all over the map. (I needed a big apology from him to Christian). I'm sure the next installment will show flashes of a mushy Myles and I will forget about this beef.
My favorite scenes were with Baz and Christian talking, and Christian tearing a strip off of Nolan. The latter, in particular, was just so bloody human and realistic. I loved that.
Another great installment. Can't wait for the next one!
The Village series is a bit addictive in the best of ways. There are the characters and the way they work together and have created a rough outline of a family, and then there is the larger plot that leans toward sci-fi and deals with just what is going on in Singing Bear Village.
Christian was introduced in the first book, Safe in Your Fire, and he was an intriguing character from the start. He’s JT’s ex and while the men still maintain a close friendship, they both know their romantic days together are over. Yet, Christian yearns for that closeness of having someone to share his life with. He’s a bit of mystery, as he has a redacted government file, and his wild child ways are slowly revealed. He has had his eye on the local sheriff for two years now, but it’s hard to date when he has to keep so many secrets and Myles mostly looks at him with disdain.
Myles has never let himself even think about how attractive Christian is because he knows the guy is just trouble. Myles plays the part of the grumpy sheriff well and doesn’t have time or patience for Christian’s antics. The guys aren’t exactly enemies, but let’s just say they have a lot of issues. There is plenty of entertaining dialogue to go around as Christian pushes all of Myles’ buttons to Myles’ complete exasperation. Myles is hesitant to get involved with Christian for several reasons, but mainly because he knows something is going on with Christian and his group of friends.
Had trouble getting through this one. I was bored and took breaks twice to read other things. This just kept going round and round but basically getting nowhere. It needed a brutal edit and a focus on something beyond characters being lovelorn. With Christian acting like a high schooler with a crush, he doesn’t come off as a very capable….whatever he is for this alien project. (What exactly does he do besides taking soil samples?)
This had too little story to fill the pages and felt way too long. And fyi, this one is only 262 pages. Book 3 is 320 and book 4 is 450 (!) so it doesn’t bode well for improvement in focus and editing. I should’ve followed one of the many impulses I had to DNF.
At this point I'm racing through this series, I absolutely love the world of Darien Cox. I have to stop myself from reading the third book having finished the first two today. Also, how cute is Baz?!
So I am glad there was the second book but I am not happy there is no third book because I have to wait for the third book for so long.
Anyways I really loved Christian in this book. I got to see him as a human being. We got a glimpse of Christian crying when JT mentions it in the first book but this time we got to see him as human. We saw him as the person who is stressed and tired of his job. Oh! poor Christian. I am sorry. I really loved him in this book. He was hilarious, a little bit of jerk, sweet, and he awfully cared about all of his friends. Myles on the other hand took me some time to warm up to him. I didn't find anything with the guy but I just felt no connection between Christian and Myles at all in the beginning. You could feel the sexual tension but I don't think there was anything else until they really got into the story.
The book was really good but the I didn't feel any excitement like I had for the first book. This book did throw some curves at me which I did not expected and I am excited about the third book. I was into the book but not that much. Like I really loved it but wanted to take a break from it too. It might be a me factor because I read it after finishing the first book and I was still on the high of the first book to even get high on this one. Also we get to know more history about the Whites and I am in love with Baz. He is so sweet and I love how happy Rudy got when he saw Baz. Also, Baz has a crush on ChrisChris. That is so sweet. I love it.
Gay romance with a sci-fi twist, set in a remote village.
The author is quite creative, the story is certainly different and I really enjoyed Christian. I think I liked this book the most out of the first three. The the way Christian's beauty was described, impressive. Definitely want to read more about Baz too. Well done!
The sex was good, I would have liked to read more sex scenes though.
Bored. So fucking bored, like I can't even. Nothing's happening. Like I'm literally waiting for something to happen. Something to make up for this sorry excuse of a fantasy. This is not what I was expecting from a Darien read. I remember how the first one had a sleezy plot but at least there was some chemistry to go on. But this one is just, Urghhh!
In first book I didn't get any specific feeling about Christian. He was little bit remote as a character. So, in second book we get to know him a little better.
After reading Caught in you Wake, the 4th and latest book in The Village series, I was left missing Christian, so I had to re-read this. I loved it just as much as I did the first time. I must say I was left wanting the author to write a sort of prequel to get JT and Christian's story. Am I the only one who thinks their chemistry is great? I want to read about the time when they dated!
4,5 *
I must say I’m surprised at how much I’ve liked this book. Yes, I did like the first story in the series quite a lot, but then Christian was not my favorite so I wasn’t expecting much. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I loved Christian in this one. Once I really got to know him, he was so much more than I gave him credit for. Myles was a very nice complementary partner to him, they fit very well. I ADORE Baz, he needs a love interest ASAP. He is so cute and charming, I even hoped he would get his wish and have some ChrisChris for himself.
The paranormal side was really interesting, though the confrontation with the second angry nasty could have been a little more dramatic. I still enjoyed it immensely and expect more will be added in the coming book, which I believe could be Elliot’s story.
So, a very well written story, with a very interesting plot and extremely likeable characters, I will continue reading!
It's Darien Cox.... of course this book was fucking amazing! Even better than the first one in this series!
But I have a problem....... I NEED to read Baz's story! Like really desperately need it, and I don't even know if Darien Cox has anything planned for him.
So Darien, even though I'm 99% sure you won't read this (but better be safe than sunny) please give Baz his own story! Cuz me loves Baz!!!!!!
BAZ IS THE BEST ALIEN EVER! AND BAZ ROCKS! AND....
