The Compound #3

Just Keep Sweet

Rate this book
Obstacles.
So many obstacles. Nothing but obstacles.

Months ago, I agreed to help Aspen Black take down the Prophet of the FLDS—to prevent her daughter from being married at an early age, and to save innocent lives from systemic abuse on the compound.

The obstacles in this case are mounting, as are my feelings for Aspen. The tension between us is palpable and I know there’s more to our connection than the increasingly difficult case at hand. But, she’s not only married to the Prophet’s brother, she’s equally devoted to her faith. Two obstacles that just may be insurmountable.

But, no matter what happens, I will close this case.
Even if it kills me.

"I believe in you, Aspen, and I'll never stop believing in you, supporting you.”

I love all of Melissa Brown's books, but there is something special about this series. These books consume you. They are unputdownable and keep you intrigued from start to finish. This book legit jacked me up. I started reading it before bed and I couldn't stop. I put it down at 50% because it was getting late, then I laid in bed for about 15 minutes and my mind was spinning. I had to know what was going to happen so what did I do? I picked it right back up and finished it. Yep, I read this one in one sitting because it was that addicting.

The first part of Aspen's story Mother Before Wife blew me away. I couldn't get it out of my head and the ending left me craving more. I finally have more and I feel exactly the same way as I did when I finished the first. I'm desperate for the next installment of this series. I feel conflicted and nervous about how this story is going to go, yet hopeful. Parts of this book gave me so much hope, and although the ending squandered some of that, I still have hope that good will win over evil.
"Everyone has a weakness. Believe me, I'll find his."

Aspen is one of the most amazing heroines I've ever read about. She's strong, protective and has the biggest heart. She stands up for what she believes no matter what the consequences may be. Detective Jonathan Cooke is one of the main players of this story. I loved being in his head and admired him and how he went out on a limb for Aspen. Then there is Paul, Aspen's husband. No one surprised me as much as Paul in this story. And I mean that in the very best way possible. Paul was a rock star and I can't wait to get more of him in the next book.

I feel so anxious right now after finishing this story. I know this is another book that will stay on my mind and keep me up at night. It's a fast-paced read that's completely and utterly enthralling. I can't recommend this series enough. It's so different from most of the books I read. Well written, intriguing, and guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, Just Keep Sweet is a book you don't want to miss out on! If you haven't started this series you need to change that asap! These books are amazing!
"Just keep sweet. Never let him see you sweat. We'll win this. We will.”

4.5 ~ 5 STARS

This is the continuation of Aspen’s story YET it includes the couple from the first book Porter and Brinley and so many well placed povs (not confusing or distracting at all) that totally add to the delivery of this exciting installment.

The cover had me somewhat torn since its Detective Jonathan Cooke the man on the outside that Aspen has contacted through Brinley and Porter for help in her plight against the prophet Clarence Black. My friends the clock is ticking down till he takes her young daughter and makes her his bride as payback for Aspen’s snooping.

”When she’s twelve, Jonathan. In just two months my baby will be married to that…monster.”

description

Aspen and Detective Cooke try to piece together the evidence they have about the goings on in the new temple while the laundry wife of the prophet seeks to join them and Jonathan puts the moves on Aspen.

”I wanted to give her a reason to leave. I wanted to be the reason…”

description

Jonathan has it bad for Aspen while she is trying to save her daughter and then well I can’t say what happens next but it’s so good…

”You heard me just fine. Let’s take that son of a bitch down.”

description

I will say that someone has a seen the light and the story and the horrific truth about what is happening in the temple is also revealed. The story is so very exciting if polygamists in the FLDS interest you this series is a must. I can’t wait to see what happens to these characters and how Melissa Brown concludes this series. This book does end in a cliffhanger leaving me on the edge of my seat looking forward to the conclusion which will be in Clarence Black’s point of view… OMG!

Such a brilliant, magnificent and captivating story!I don't know what else to say!! This book is so good, that once I start it I couldn't put it down! It was fast paced with twists and suspense! From the time I finished Mother before Wife I was in agony waiting to see where the story goes.
This book surpassed my expectations! Melissa takes the reader on a crazy journey.Mother Before Wife has left us speechless after the cliffhanger. But in this book things are becoming more and more interesting. In this one we have different POVs and this makes the story more intimate. I was feeling like I was a part of the story. Melissa did it again, with her beautiful writing. She delivers a riveting story!! I highly recommend it to everyone!!! If you haven't read this series yet you must now! The storyline in each book is unique and original!!

I swear on all things, this series, it’s insane. Legit, I read these books so freaking fast, because my heart races the entire time and I am dying to know what will come next.

This is the second book in the Compound Series and takes place around a polygamist community. The heroine in our story is a devote FLDS, but has discovered a lot of things that has her questioning their prophet. That actually all takes place in the first book, this one actually picks up right where Mother Before Wife left off.

Aspen Black has reached out to local law enforcement to help save her daughter. This is a HUGE no no in their community, but she feels she has no choice. This story has so much going on, but not in a bad way, it’s just very involved. Regardless, it reads crazy fast and is completely unforgettable.

When I first started this series, I had so many hopes for Aspen, but was also torn. I had no idea how this would really play out, because Aspen is a devote FLDS member and she believes her teachings are true and correct. However, she doesn’t believe the Prophet is an honest man, so seeing how this can and will play out has me completely hooked.

With every book in this series I want more. This conclusion, from the Prophets POV is one of my most highly anticipated reads. I absolutely cannot wait for more. I know this review is all over the place, but there isn’t much I can tell you without spoiling. The most important part I hope you take away from this is read this series, it’s amazing!

IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE PREVIOUS BOOK, be warned of SPOILERS.

The follow up to Mother Before Wife in the gripping Compound series was fantastic. Told in officer Jonathan Cooke's perspective, it gives us a rounded and fully charged telling of what's all going down at the FLDS.
Picking up where MBW left off, Aspen Black is doing everything she can to save her daughter, Ruthie, from the clutches of the prophet, Clarence Black. Enlisting the help of Jonathan Cooke, Aspen sets out to stop all the revolting things happening at the compound.

From Jonathan's perspective, we learn a few things about how the compound is perceived and how the ways of the FLDS are perceived. We also learn of his growing attraction to Aspen and her strong personality, that's slowly seeping into Jonathan's subconscious. She's untouchable to him on so many levels.

The stakes are much higher this time around. I won't reveal more about the plot since anything would spoil this wonderful instalment, but needless to say, it's getting very crazy at the compound!
There are several POV's in this book. It did work that way and gave us a very comprehensive picture of everything happening. Brinley and Porter figure quite prominently in this as well, especially Porter. And while I didn't mind the POV change because it was seamless, I think I prefer a single or dual perspective. I find those set ups more intense.

Lots happens here, including some surprise revelations! I have a few suspicions about who's in on all the stuff going down. Very strong suspicions, lol. I'm not sure how MB is going to tie everything into the conclusion because things seem so lost, but I have faith. Do I wish things to work out a certain way? Definitely. Do I think they will? Not sure.
This ends on a cliffhanger and it's a tense way to leave the story hanging. I can't wait for the final book and to see how everything resolves, including what I really want to happen!
If you haven't read this series yet, you should. It's an exciting, tense and incredibly engrossing one, love it.

At the end of Mother Before Wife I was worried about Aspen & Paul's relationship. Paul loves his wife but his dedication to the Prophet and Heavenly Father clouds his decisions. This is frustrating for Aspen because she really needs Paul to believe in her and what she suspects is going on the compound.

Aspen has no choice but to seek the support of Detective Cooke, he believes her and is determined to help her take the Prophet down. Above everything else, Aspen wants to protect her children and that in turn will provide safety for the rest of the families on the compound.

Aspen has never felt more alone or isolated but a mother protecting her cubs should not be under estimated and she begins to dig deeper into goings on in the temple and is shocked at what she finds. The Prophet has met his match in her and he abuses his 'power' in the cruelest ways. He is a man under threat and even more dangerous now than ever before.

When something unthinkable happens, Paul finds himself questioning everything he thought he knew about his brother, the Prophet and the discussions he had with Aspen. Now everything has changed and Aspen is no longer alone in her pursuit for the truth.

Then Melissa cruelly slammed me in the side of the head with THE motherf*cker of a cliff hanger and so I'm sitting out there now on the edge waiting........

What an excellent series. So unique and different from what's out there right now. Yes, romance somewhat took a back-burner to the plot, but I LOVE that in my books, and the romance is still very present in almost all the books.

If you followed the Warren Jeffs/FLDS real life story at all, this series is about that - it's kind of like being in the middle of it all, and watching it/reading it from the inside. If you have it, just think of it as kinda-sorta a cult book, or less so. A fundamentalist religious book, and what the women in those sort of religions go through in order to find their HEA.

I really enjoyed it. I stayed up till 6am one night to finish one of the books. I read the entire series in less than three days - four books, one novella, so that says something right there.

I highly recommend.

“Just keep sweet. Never let him see you sweat. We’ll win this . . . we will....."

Another spectacular read from this fast paced amazing series.

description

This book picked up from where Mother Before Wife ended. It was intriguing as always especially since it was written in multiple POV.

The first half mostly consists of Jonathan's POV. It wasn't boring at all but somehow I was hoping to read something from Paul, he was Aspen's husband after all. Well, it didn't came until around 55% and I'd say, it was worth the wait because I was very much satisfied with it.

I'll be honest, the moment I saw the cover , scanned the blurb and realize that it was Jonathan who was talking.... I was disappointed. I even have this second thoughts of whether to read this or just wait till the last book was out because this ends in another cliffhanger and like I said earlier, reading Jonathan's name kind of lost my eagerness to continue on. But... I was still intrigued and couldn't help but think of how everything ended, so I just gave in. Cliffhanger or not. I'm glad that this book wasn't a let down. In fact, it gets better and better each time .

Ms. Brown never cease to amaze me with her engaging story about the people inside the compound. Needless to say, I highly recommend this series to everyone!

The final book will be written in Clarence Black's POV - Prophet Takes All, and it will be out this coming fall. I. Can't. Wait.

This book is part of a series and should be read in order. Although the first two was about a different character, their story was great as well and worth the read.

BEAUTIFUL!!

This story ruined me...it's so consuming, intense and intriguing I couldn't stop reading even when I felt my heart breaking.
Melissa Brown made me a fan for life. She made me overlook my prejudices towards these types of communities so far from my belief and my knowledge.

I love the characters something fierce and I really hope there will be a happy ending for them all...minus the crazy, controlling, and evil ones.

This series keeps opening new doors. But beware, this story ends in a cliffhanger, so there will be at least one more book in this series. I highly recommend the Compound Series to anyone who enjoyed the HBO cable show Big Love.

I have been waiting for this book anxiously since the last one. When I received it, I basically stopped everything and started it. It picks up right where the last one ended. I had so many emotions while reading. I was nervous and felt like I was holding my breath the whole time waiting for the shit to hit the fan.

It did not disappoint. It is told mostly from Jonathan, who is the police officer that is helping Aspen take down the horrible Prophet and in the meantime, developing feelings for her. (I have never hated a man more than Clarence Black!!). Aspen will stop at nothing to save her child and protect her family. We finally find out what the Prophet is hiding and he is pure evil. Also, another player comes into the mix and I gotta say... It made me pretty happy and surprised.

This was a quick read that I devoured. I adored so many characters and my heart broke for them. It is told from multiple POV's and I gotta say I loved it. Normally I don't like multiple POV's but it worked in this story.

I was a bit disappointed that there is another book and this wasn't the conclusion. But that's on me not realizing how many books were in the series. I will be on pins and needles waiting for the last book.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Okey If your reading this review. I am assuming that you have read the previous book. Mother Before Wife If you haven't then bugger off do your work I am not giving you a short cut.

I don't think this book should be shelfed as romance. Yes thats a personal opinion but hear me out. When I read the previous book I was only hoping that this time round Aspen gets a caring man. Who is not like her previous husband if Aspen falls in love with him then it is a bonus. Then we met Paul god he gave me hope . From the first night when he came to say a simple hello to when they were married. I truly thought he loved Aspen the way he acted. I also thought he will accept Aspen children as his.

I mean in their own religious words. When a women moves on she marries her new husband and then they accept eachother body, soul. So then thr women childrens blood becomes the same as their new dad's. But this just seemed like false words. Paul is caring, understanding, loyal, noble , honest and loving. Even after all these qualities he didn't truly accepted Aspen children he cared for them yes . But didn't accept them as his own . In the true manner.

Another part put me in conflict was that Paul always said he loved Aspen . But Aspen never said it back due to the fact she could not understand the whole concept of "love" . Especially since in their world polygamy marriage was the norm.

But then there is a chapter where we see through Paul eyes . That chapter made me conflicted all he saw in Aspen was superficial. His so called love is based on Aspen looks, her beautiful face and sexy curves/body. That disappointed me so much . Because Aspen has so much potential shes full of personality and qualites.

Then in this story we meet Jonathan who is judgemental at first. His view point is he wants nothing to do with the compound community. Where women are kept as prisoners. But then he meets Aspen , He also like Aspen has to put his own beliefs behind and focus on a cause . Which is to save innocent life and unfold a secret.

But theres more although Jonathan trust Aspen and helps her. He falls in love with her but he see's what i wanted paul to see. Jonathan reasons to fall in love with Aspen are these
" Nothing about you is silly to me " Jonathan - I said in confidence "Not one thing. You are the most incredible women I've met. It doesn't matter to where you have come from or who you've been with. None of ot matters I just want you"

Then this

" More than her beautiful face was everything that made her Aspen. Aspen was stubborn, clever and determined"

Jonathan loved Aspen for her personality. Then later on the author decides that Paul also loves Aspen personality too.It felt like the author still wanted us to like Paul . So then she decided to put that chapter in. But it was too late then the most devastated thing happened my horrific guess of what is in that temple. Become a reality and who was being abused become clear. Unfortunately my guess was right.

I cried so fucken much again due to Melissa brown marvellous writing. I was so engrossed into the book. That I felt like a parent I cried for the children. As If this traumatic incident happened to my child. I was angry at Paul but then i cried with him , for him. You would have to find out why . My conflicts feelings over Paul become more apparent and with reason. Due to a secret that unfolds near the end.

Also in this whole book Aspen doesn't explain or we don't see any romance between her and Paul. They are married yet nothing later on we find out that Aspen does loves Paul. But why ? we don't get to see the romance blossom at all. That's why I said I personally don't see this boon as a romance.

Like in Wife Number Seven where the book was bursting with romance and passion. It was no overly erotic but a steamy yes . In this book tgat is not the case . They have sex it was great. Thats we get no details like Wife Number Seven. We don't see how the characters love developed . In the first book it was like poetry. Every page was full of expressive undying love between the characters. Then when I as a reader come to read Just Keep Sweet and Mother Before Wife. I get nothing which is a disappointment . I know Mothers before wife is not shelfed as a romance. But it's a new chapter of Aspen life she gets married to her husband . Who apperentely loves her more than he has ever loved his other wifes. That is what i read in reviews so my expectations where high. I was expecting romance, passion, mild erotic . Vut in return i got disappointment and nothing.

What I will say is that the author made everyone go through. Their own individual challenges in this book. Nearly so many characters had to face their fears and judgemental opinions head on.

Poor , childish Ruthie I irratated the fuck out of me. I wanted to beat that silly , childish brat. I know i am being unreasonable. Ruthie is a 11yrs old teenager . But got it was so frustrating I so understand that Aspen was trying to protect. Ruthie childhood innocent but the way sje was behaving and how the situation was escalting. I just wished that Aspen told Ruthie everything.
Sorry for the rant .

oh my heck keep sweet, keep sweet. What has Melissa Brown done to me?
I have been a fan of Melissa Brown's since her first book Bouquet Toss. She has always created true love stories. Stories that make me sigh, make my heart smile and make me believe in love. Well she just decided to add a little gasoline to that and wrote Just Keep Sweet. The intensity in this story is crazy good. I could not put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen. I wanted to throw my reader at Clarence Black and because of Clarence Black. His evil bled through the pages.
Sweet is only in the title as Brown unfolds the dark secrets of the FDLS polygamist compound. She melds the naivety and the sinister elements of the polygamist compound in this instalment of the series. And we truly see how one influences the other and reveals who truly is sweet and who can rot in Hell.
I really enjoy Melissa Brown's writing in that she writes with a sincerity and a purity that is not to be mistaken with juvenile or prudish. Rather her words exude raw emotion and truthfulness that bring her characters to life. You can absolutely buy into the characters and invest in the story.
So while this book may not have the romance that you have come to know from Melissa Brown, I think it is her best writing yet. Just Keep Sweet almost teases us with "what ifs" and "oh no she did nots."
I can't wait for the next book! Heaven help us while we wait... just keep sweet.

Five stars is not enough for this book! The exciting sequel to Mother Before Wife, but definitely not the conclusion as there is another book!!!! The Compound series captured my attention pretty quickly since she released it when a real life compound was being questioned about plural marriage and abuse among the group. Currently, there are four books in the series with the first two being connected to each other. The next two, soon to be three, are intricately connected into more a trilogy. You cannot read Just Keep Sweet without reading Mother Before Wife, the story picks up immediately and keeps going. Told in two parts mostly from Jonathan (the local detective), Aspen and Paul with a few chapters told from other key players. They are struggling to understand what the Prophet is actually doing in the temple when the truth comes out. When the mystery is solved so many things said and done by the Prophet make sense and the story comes even more alive. Brown had me gripping my Kindle tightly and ignoring my family for two evenings. As a mother I felt for Aspen and her desire to keep her children safe. As a spouse I felt for Paul and his sudden tragedy. As a law enforcement wife I fell hard for Jonathan as he desired to help Aspen and her children break free from the compound. A truly heart tugging book with a suspenseful gripping story line I know I won't stop thinking about for awhile. I was given a copy by the author for my honest and unbiased review.

No no no nooooo! This cannot be happening now. Argh! I need the conclusion ASAP! Just keep sweet is anything but sweet... What I mean is it will have a lot revelations, secrets unraveled, even Porter's untold story broke my heart... I couldn't believe how much he silently suffered. And an honourable mention of Paul's son, Isaac; I cried for that poor innocent soul. Just when I thought I couldn't loathe Clarence Black enough, this book just gave more reasons to. God he makes my skin scrawl every time I hear his name. And just think, there's more of him in the conclusion... God help us all. I wanna see this demon be destroyed and burn forever in hell.
P.s. More Jonathan dosage will be nice too. He is the one who will bring light to the darkness that Aspen and so many people are trapped in. I'm rooting for him all the way. Team Jonathan!❤️

I literally have goose bumps right now. This is the kind of story that when I read the last page I asked myself " What in the living Heck did I just read?" I'm beyond shocked. Of all the books I've read in the past, I don't remember reading anything quite like this before. This is a 5 star story.
This is not a standalone or a romance, Mother Before Wife (The Compound Series #2) needs to be read first. Keep Sweet picks up where MBW ends with a cliffhanger.

I will not go in to much details about what's in the book, because I really want the readers to experience what I just did. This story unfolds on a religious compound where polygamist is an obligation, they have no or little notions of the outside world. They live with their faith that as been bestowed upon them at birth. They live according to the Prophets. But what happens when the Prophet is not as honest as he claims he his? Abuses his power in order to profit for his gain? Becomes the worst monster imaginable? One detective will want to uncover the truth.

I can't seem to wrapped my head around this story. Some questions from the previous book were answered but more came up. When I thought one person could be trusted I was proven wrong. It's a chilling, thrilling, captivating and highly addicting story that would not let me go until the last page was read. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout the whole time that I was reading. It was a never endless bundle of surprising twists, a web of deceit and lies. The writing, the words, the characters and the seamless plot was just amazingly executed. This could be potential for triggers due to some abuse. As the story unfolds, it gets darker and darker.

This story as many POV's from quite a few different characters that are significant to the development of this story. They were all well placed and I never once felt confused. All characters have distinctive characteristics that sets them apart. Trust me you will not want to miss this superb book. This ends shockingly and with a cliffhanger that left me speechless. To better enjoy this roller coaster ride, read Wife Number Seven first but not a must in order to enjoy book 2-3 and 4. I strongly encourage the reading of this book. I've read all of Melissa Browns books so far and they are all worthwhile. Prophet Takes All #4 will be coming in the fall.

“Just keep sweet. Never let him see you sweat. We’ll win this . . .”

First off let’s be clear that Just Keep Sweet is the follow-up to Mother Before Wife by Melissa Brown and you do need to read that book first. I would not recommend reading this book as a standalone. Just Keep Sweet is a romantic suspense heavy on the suspense. I literally was on the edge of my seat as I was flipping pages not only figuring out where Aspen would end up but how everything would all play out.

“Nothing about you is silly to me,” I said with confidence. “Not one thing. You’re the most incredible woman I’ve met. It doesn’t matter to me where you come from or who you’ve been with. None of it matters. I just want you.”

I don’t want to delve into too many spoilers here so let’s not focus on the plot too much here. Know that this picks up right where the last book left off and while much is resolved not everything is. There is still more to come and trust me you will never guess where the story is going next. Just Keep Sweet is a love triangle that isn’t and I know that is confusing but it’s also true. Aspen is married and she loves her husband, Paul, and loves being in a plural marriage. She isn’t looking for a quick out but she is desperately seeking help from the sexy detective Johnathan Cooke. While accusations into his brother has left her relationship with her husband strained she is forced to seek help and comfort from the defective. Her husband isn’t making her feel safe and Johnathan is. But really the romantic aspect is a very very tiny portion of this book. The main focus of the book is saving her daughter from marrying the prophet when she turns twelve and taking the man down.

‘It was time to make Clarence Black pay. I just had to figure out how.’

The storyline is like no other I have ever read and the series as a whole has quickly become a personal favorite of mine. I love Melissa’s writing and her complex characters make me just constantly want more from her. I love that in her books you get one main focus POV with extras thrown in . The last book was mainly Aspen with others and this time you get Johnathan and Paul! If you have not started this series yet then I urge you to try it and if you have then I am sure you are already hooked.

*Cliffhanger alert!* Again. I didn't realize this was going to be a trilogy (or more?). Had I known, I still would have read it but I wouldn't have felt this sense of panic when I got close to the end. Moving on.

This really is an amazing series. This book picks up where Mother Before Wife left off. Aspen, no longer able to rely on her husband, enlists the help of Jonathan, a police detective, to try and take down Prophet Clarence Black and ultimately stop his impending marriage to her young daughter.

This book was full of suspense. I was on the edge of my seat. Once again I admire Aspen's commitment to her faith. It would have been easier just to leave with her children. But Aspen didn't want easy. She wants change. She wants to live in peace. One corrupt man can't shake her beliefs.

We find out what the prophet is up to in this book and I gasped out loud. I couldn't believe it. I hadn't even considered it. And it broke my heart.

I especially liked the romance aspect. Brown had me on my toes. I didn't know what was going to happen. I still don't, to be honest. I'm certainly looking forward to the next book. Well done.

I Love this series! I've been completely enraptured since Brinley's story and I continue to feel that way. Aspen is such a compelling woman. Her faith is so strong, and complete, even in the face of such hate and evil. She infuriates and impresses me all at the same time. What a magical treat. This story was different from the others, in that we are getting the story from so many different point of views. The fact that it flows so effortlessly, and we feel the pain, frustration, all the emotions from each character is a true testament to the genius writing abilities of Ms. Brown. I shall eagerly be awaiting the ending of this series and the conclusion to the one Clarence Black!!!

This series is fabulous. I love diving into the compound life because it is different from other books I read.
Just Keep Sweet starts off where Mother Before Wife ended. Aspen and Jonathan are still trying to figure out what the prophet is doing in the temple. They run into obstacles with their investigation and getting information. They get a break when a few people offer to help them with the case by stepping forward with valuable information.
There are added POVs that add extra content to the story without messing with the flow. It's nice getting to see what some of the other characters are thinking and doing.

To be honest, I was tempted to give this book three stars. I wasn't happy about how the romance turned out because I was wanting Aspen to be with someone else and I also don't think there should be a fourth book about the same plot. I would have been fine with a fourth that focused on different characters, but I find that I am tiring of the plot to protect Ruthie and this might make me sound bad, but I think she is a brat and I don't care about her all that much.

Still I will be reading the fourth book in this series.

Once I started I just could not put this down and ending up reading it in one sitting. It is the 4th book of the compound series, here we have the perspective from the local law enforcer Jonathan Cooke.
I love this series well worth a read even if the angle of polygamy was at first a little off putting - I have also since reading the first in this series been reading other authors who write crime/thrillers about polygamy and have found it all quiet interesting believe it or not!

Another cliffhanger. Would have been nice to know before hand. I'm tired of having to reread prior books in the series to jog my memory before I start the next book. I read a lot of books, I'm very busy and I just don't have the time. Maybe authors can put a little note in the beginning " last time in the ___series, ..." Like soaps used to do.

Outside of being annoyed about that, the writing was excellent, I lost an entire day because I needed to know what happened.
