Michelle is an author, bookseller, and lover of literature based in Toronto. She writes fantasy novels as both Michelle Sagara and Michelle West (and sometimes as Michelle Sagara West). You can find her books at fine booksellers.
She lives in Toronto with her long-suffering husband and her two children, and to her regret has no dogs.
Reading is one of her life-long passions, and she is sometimes paid for her opinions about what she’s read by the venerable Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. No matter how many bookshelves she buys, there is Never Enough Shelf space. Ever.
She has published as Michelle Sagara (her legal name), as Michelle West (her husband's surname), and as Michelle Sagara West (a combination of the two).
An interesting premise and world. Honestly, just picked up a series from the library and wasn't expecting much. She prequel book was clear and fairly compelling though the kid's character didn't quite feel fully formed. The books were different; it felt like she talks around why an action is happening and I didn't really understand the larger context of what was happening until over half the first book was done. There are a lot of politics etc that span a much longer period of time than the protagonist understands, leading us the readers to not quite understand, but so far I'm willing to forgive it.
There is something intriguing though, that I don't feel like I've seen in other books, especially Chosen-One-Fantasy type genre. (spoilers ahead) They allude often, sometimes in book 1 but mostly book 2, about tests, of self, of mettle, whatever that happen in life. Choices made and passed or failed, and from my reading of it, in this world they hit home that ignorance is no excuse. She failed this test as a child, because what? She didn't understand the deaths and their context, or she wouldn't have been willing to kill her basically-younger-siblings, or understand why they had to die, or forgive it? She didn't know any of those things when she was a child, but it seems emphasized that she failed it and only because someone else made a hard choice the world didn't get destroyed and even that she didn't know, didn't learn for years, but it doesn't matter? It's kind of brutal and that's what I find inriguing about this whole thing, I think.
There are authors who search and write their entire lives, yet never achieve, to the scope of imagination that Ms. Sagara has, the compelling and totally engaging grasp of enchantment, fully developed characters and interest in humanity encountered in this trilogy. I have found a new author to engage my interest. Bravo!
A richly imagined world. A girl from the slums gets a job with the police, and slowly we see her discover her place in the world. FMC is an excellently drawn character, flawed and driven. Supporting characters are unique and have depth. The magic is interesting and the politics are non-conventional. Mostly clear writing (and the FMC is not very self aware initially). Long but otherwise well edited.
Michelle Sagara Chronicles of Elantra Vol 1 by Michelle Sagara – This volume includes Moonlight, Shadow and Courtlight. When you meet Kaylin, be prepared for a long and wonderful series! Happy Reading!
Nice fantasy series, where Kaylin Neya grew up in the fiefs but ends up as one of the Hawks Protectors) out of the City of Elantra. Shapeshifters, Dragons, Barrani and other races live in a precious balance that might be disturbed easily by people with evil intentions... or even by a bigger evil from the past.
