Mistletoe Reunion
A sweet story of second chance love between Marlys, a female homeopathic doctor and Samuel, a journalist and author. They never expected to be reunited after so many years, and old feelings are brought to the surface again to be explored. I liked that Marlys is intellectual and driven in her career because she wants to help people. She is very compassionate which shows her softer side. Samuel is a perfect match for her because he admires her independence and the sacrifices she makes to benefit the lives of others. He's a bit hesitant to see if she has room in her life for him, but his son helps them bond and see the happiness that the love of being a family would bring.

This story has a fabulous beginning with a great hook- Colton marries Beatrix on her deathbed to provide a name for her soon to be born son... but she doesn't die! He instantly feels protective and concerned for her, and it doesn't wane after she recovers, but blossoms into care and affection. Their romance grows sweetly, I loved how he defends her and shows his regard for her in such sweet ways since he doesn't have any experience with relationships. He also has deeper issues about his past which brings another dimension to the story as Beatrix helps him turn to God for forgiveness. There is a bit of a language barrier in the beginning and a cultural dynamic such as the persecution against Austrians by those of German descent because of the war in Europe. Well-developed characters and a great plot made this a story I'll want to read again.

Cowboy Creek Christmas...two stories, one great book! I loved both stories and how they fused together beautifully. Both took place in the same town and around the same time, so things from the one novella were mentioned in the other and that was great.
While I did really enjoy both stories, I think I liked the second one, Mistletoe Bride, a bit more. I loved how the characters got married at the beginning of the story, it a sort of marriage of convenience way, and had to grow to love each other. So sweet!! I also loved how protective he was of her when some people said or did things to harm her.
All in all, a great book! I recommend it if you like Love Inspired Historical novels or Christmas stories. It's very good!

5 STARS!
My rating is for the second story, Mistletoe Bride, in this 2 story novella collection within the multi-author Cowboy Creek Series. Since Sherri Shackelford is one of my favorite LI authors, I was anxious to read her inclusion in this set and will review Mistletoe Reunion when finished.
Mistletoe Bride by Sherri Shackelford
The sick and dying, Beatrix, concedes to her fate, but doesn't want her child born out of wedlock. The broken, but immensely caring Colton Werner is there to act as interpreter and understands her plea. In an ongoing effort to right the "wrongs" of his past and unsure if the unborn child will even survive, Colton selflessly offers to marry Beatrix before the impending birth.
First, I want to say how gutted I was emotionally right from the start. I was blown away by how I immediately felt brokenhearted for two characters that I hadn't even gotten a chance to get to know yet. My overly empathetic tendency longed to fight for and right alongside them. Sherri Shackelford, you outdid yourself in these opening scenes! I was quite unsure of the story's direction from that point. I'm so used to the author's marriage of convenience romance trope, BUT the heroine lay dying with an undefined illness! Yet, I needn't worry when left to this author's deft hands. I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end. I have to admit, I am not a big fan of novellas. I find it hard to immerse fully into a story that lacks the type of development you tend to get with full length books. I was never skeptical of Shackelford's capability within a limited page number, I just know my reading penchants. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong with this one. Colton was the damaged hero I'm always drawn to while Beatrix waited patiently to see in himself what she saw. I rejoiced in their HEA and felt it was well-deserved. In the end, I could always use more story, but I could say that about any book that I am enormously enjoying.

She hopes that her alternative medicine will be more accepted in a small western town. But to her dismay, her former fiance is the owner of the local paper. Marlys broke her engagement to Sam years ago to pursue medicine. She still isn't sure she can handle marriage and medicine. But when the townswomen decide that Seth needs a wife, Marlys must decide if she's ready to lose Sam again.

Both of these stories were sweet, romantic, faith-based. They fit well with the other books in the series, but I think could be read as a stand-alone. Even though there are three authors writing in this series, they all did a great job of meshing the stories together and creating a fun little town to read about. I liked how the authors handled the prejudice that was so prevalent during that time period. They also did a great job of infusing faith and the Christmas spirit into the stories without it coming across as preachy. Overall, this was a really fun book to read. I enjoyed it and can't wait to see what these authors write next.

A cozy holiday read that didn't change my life - but a pleasant way to pass the time. I liked the Cheryl St. John story for the practical characters and the reunited theme - but she spends a lot of time on past romantic couples and "series stuff." I think fans of the other books in the series will love this, and while it wasn't confusing for me as a newcomer I wanted a lot more focus on the main romantic couple.
The Shackelford story featured a compelling plot, and I loved that the author didn't gloss over anti-immigrant sentiment - but I felt the ending was a little rushed. Other than that minor quibble, I rather enjoyed it.

I had SO MUCH trouble with this. Mostly because I'm Messianic, and the feasts are a *HUGE* thing for me (and for the Bible, but not so much for chrischuns, which...)... Anyhow, Colossians 2:17 says that the feasts (in the apostolic age AFTER the Ascension) are a 'shadow of things to come', which means they're 100% relevant. Biblically - not for Christians. They've replaced the feasts with BS: Sukkot got swapped for X-mess, Pesach for Easter, and more.
Having said, Thanksgiving was originally the Sukkot feast celebrated by the Pilgrims who were Torah-observant and left Europe/Christendom for freedom. But then Christendom followed them, and bastardized Sukkot AGAIN... this time by way of Abraham Lincoln, making Sukkot Thanksgiving and MOVING it to November (a month that has NO harvesting associated with it). He made this a national observance in 1863, and Grant reaffirmed it after the Civil War.
What *PIXXXXED* me off was that *BOTH* of these authors 1) know NOTHING about the origins of Sukkot/T-Day, and 2) BOTH attributed the November observance to Andrew Johnson, who WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IT.
There's nothing like bad history to accompany bad religion.
Icing on cake? St. John says that the red berries are mistletoe. Um... red berries are *HOLLY*, and the mistletoe would be the white berries. Unless you're looking at desert mistletoe - and they're in *KANSAS*, so that would be a big NO.

"Mistletoe Reunion" wasn't a bad story. It just wasn't a good story, either. There was absolutely NO chemistry between the no-nonsense lady doctor and the newspaper man. Yes, they had history... apparently he loved her once, although we have NO evidence as to why or how he even could. She was all about education and learning, NOT romance, at any point in her life. None of it jived.
I'm also leery of homeopathic medicine. Yes, she can treat bruises, reduce swelling and relieve dryness, but actual MEDICINE? Like, sutures, appendix bursting, that kind of deeper, more urgent care? Not thinking she'd be much help without the stronger meds. Just sayin'.
"Mistletoe Bride" was better - a story about a fallen (read: pregnant) woman who travels from Austria to the West to a man who was supposed to marry her (but died before her arrival). We're never told what the heck is wrong that she's dying in childbirth, so that didn't set with me well, either. Maybe *they* didn't know, though.
Anyhow, the blacksmith steps up to 'marry' her and give her baby legitimacy, as her dying wish... except she lives. And hence begins the awkwardness that the author foisted upon us that wasn't really even there. He wasn't acting it, she wasn't feeling it... but we were TOLD it was there, so I guess that's that?
I had to take stars.
However, I do wish I had the three books that came before these (they're #4 and #5 in a series, except we're never told that, either). Also... THESE STORIES ARE BACKWARDS!!! The doctor alludes to the pregnant woman having given birth at the start of her story, and then we finish that tale, just to have the pregnant woman's story AFTER that.
Sometimes I wonder where 'Love, Inspired's head is.
What *REALLY* pissed me off was St. John's dedication in the front of the book. She says her dead friend is 'sitting at the right hand of God'. !!! Blasphemy!!! I recall James and John FIGHTING over this in the gospels, and Yeshua clearly telling them that the spot on God's right was reserved for HIM - NOT THEM. So where does St. John get off putting her friend there?!??!!? NO!!!
I can't even. Might need a break from 'Love, Inspired', after this.

You have two stories about Cowboy Creek.
Mistletoe Reunion - Marlys is the new doctor in town, but people aren't sure about her yet. She's a female and she doesn't have a traditional practice. She's strong. When she refused to marry, her father disowned her. She found a way to go to medical school and move west on her own. As she gets to know the town she finds out that her former fiancée is the newspaper editor. The two reconnect and have a chance to learn about the people they have become.
Mistletoe Bride - Beatrix has been shunned by her family and sent to America to marry a stranger. She's pregnant, alone, and barely speaks English when she learns that her fiancée died. Colton is called to help translate and ends up marrying Beatrix. Both Colton and Beatrix have to overcome their pasts so that they can have a chance at a future.

Cowboy Creek Christmas is two books in one. The first Misletoe Christmas tells of a woman doctor whom comes to Cowboy Creek and opens her own practice while reuniting from a guy from her past. This story jumps around some and condenses a few months into a few pages. The main character is likable yet also at points blunt which could be explored more. The second story Mistletoe Bride tells of a pregnant Austrian woman whom arrives in Cowboy Creek to meet a man to marry only to realize that he is dead and her survival as a new mom, wife, and citizen of the town. This story interesting yet presents distance with the main character’s new husband. The reader is told the story yet still there is a lack of actually getting to know the characters as this story also jumps in storyline.

I am only reviewing Mistletoe Bride by Sherri Shackelford at this time.
I really liked this story. Its been a while since I read a cowboy creek story but I had no problems getting into this one. Beatrix came to a country she didn't know, prepared to marry a man she never met all while sick and pregnant! That girl is my hero! Colton has such guilt about his brother's death that he hides inside himself until his new family is targeted by bullies. Loved the ending and I'm looking forward to another visit in Cowboy Creek.

CHRISTMAS TIME AT COWBOY CREEK FOR TWO NEW COUPLES
With each story, we have a chance to see people from previous stories and learn how their lives have progressed, how the town is growing and get a glimpse at new residents. Each story can read as a standalone, and even better as a collective series. They are clean romances that have a Christian undertone with a moral message, just sharing the love of God and His word in a way that is appropriate to that story. There is a great cast of characters, social interaction, a little bit of angst, some sweet moments, and as in everything else in life, some decisions to make. In this book, we get two short but sweet stories by two of the previous authors. There is always a little extra magical moment at Christmas time.

THAT MISTLETOE REALLY WORKS!
I enjoyed this return to Cowboy Creek, the quaint town that is growing by leaps and bounds with new families, new businesses, new mail-order brides and new babies. From Pennsylvania to Cowboy Creek will reunite two people who have a history together that includes heartache.
Dr. Marlys Boyd is a healer who believes in a different type of medicine, including natural herbs and treatments. She is very well educated, loves history and speaks many languages. She angered her father when she continued to pursue the field of medicine and even broke off a short engagement. She has resolved her life will be to her patients, medicine and healing, even if that means she will never have a love of a good man and a family. It is the sacrifice she has chosen to make. “God created the body to do the healing itself. I simply treat the symptoms in a manner that best advance the process.”
Newspaperman and journalist, Samuel Woods Mason, has decided to move westward to Cowboy Creek, along with his son, August, to run the newspaper. Sam’s wife died in childbirth, and his mother helped raise his son, mostly by herself when Sam went off to war for many years. August is upset that he had to leave his grandmother, but he has been making many friends at school, and slowly this father and son are connecting.
What a shock for two people from Pennsylvania to meet again in Cowboy Creek after all these years. Sam and Marlys had a very short engagement, and she broke it off to pursue her dream of medicine and healing. Now they have been reunited, but her choice deeply hurt Sam in life. Watching her tend to her patients, and learning more about her and her talents give him a better insight to her after all these years. They are clean romances that have a Christian undertone with a moral message, just sharing the love of God and His word in a way that is appropriate to that story. There is a great cast of characters, social interaction, a little bit of angst, some sweet moments, and as in everything else in life, some decisions to make. In this book, we get two short but sweet stories by two of the previous authors. There is always a little extra magical moment at Christmas time.

First of all, I thought the stories should have been reversed. Beatrix has already had her baby in 'Mistletoe Reunion.'
Mistletoe Reunion (Cheryl St. John) Surprisingly, this St. John story did not 'speak to me.' In fact, I thought it was rather dull.
After ending her engagement, Marlys Boyd went on to become a doctor. She decided to move West, where the pioneer spirit of the people might make them more receptive to the type of physician she had become (Homeopathic).
After moving to Kansas, Dr. Boyd meets her old fiancee again. This was too much of a coincidence to be likely. Sam Mason, now a widower, has a son. Sam is still interested in Marlys but is afraid to chance his heart again.
Mistletoe Bride (Sherri Shackelford) Beatrix Haas is midway into childbirth when the midwife finds someone who can speak German to the frightened and rapidly wearying young Austrian. When Beatrix finds out that her intended husband has died before she could arrive, she is filled with despair. Her grip on life starts to slip.
Blacksmith Colton Werner, realizing the Beatrix will probably die, offers to marry her so her child will have a name. Beatrix accepts gratefully.
When Beatrix survives, each partner has to decide what he/she wants. Should they divorce, so each can marry a person of his own choosing?
This story was more engaging than the first one. 3.5 stars

But Sam sees her as she is, and respects her knowledge and abilities, and encourage her to make a difference in the field of medicine no matter what the consequences. I felt the struggle they had, from their past connection to trusting again, the experimental status of Marlys's treatments, the wonder of what the future holds. But with adjusting and compromise, they find a way to each other again until Marlys gets a career offer like no other. Very forward thinking and thought provoking tale with sweet romance and trusting in faith to guide them to their destiny.

The aftermath of the European war makes its ugly head rise up in the Kansas town where Colton does his best to protect his sudden and unplanned bride. The circumstances of their marriage are peculiar yet with time and care the true feelings grow. I loved Colton and Beatrix. The fragility of the situation they are in was palpable. The obstacles on their way were enormous, yet their willingness to work on their relationship, to compromise and accept each other was remarkable.
The stories parallel each other as the two couples are fumbling into love during the first Thanksgiving celebration. This is a novella and a wonderful read. I so enjoy these two authors. These stories are well written and heart warming, just what you need on a cold day with a cup of hot cocoa. I know you will enjoy these stories.

Suddenly she begins to question her decisions to cut him out of her life.
Sam Mason is still attracted to Marlys but with a young son he doesn't want to have his heart broke one more time. He feels he must help the town accept her though and he must protect her from their fear.

Colton is horrified to have to actually help deliver the baby but something happens in his heart as he hold this small life that is not breathing. He goes out to clean up the little body but the washing brought the baby back.
These two stories are great and show God always has a plan. None of the couples had any hope for their future but God brought them together and gave them a hope and a future. God has a plan for you two. Give Him your heart and lay down your control and watch Him work out your problems. God is so good.

She hopes that her alternative medicine will be more accepted in a small western town. But to her dismay, her former fiance is the owner of the local paper. Marlys broke her engagement to Sam years ago to pursue medicine. She still isn't sure she can handle marriage and medicine. But when the townswomen decide that Seth needs a wife, Marlys must decide if she's ready to lose Sam again.

It was great to visit Cowboy Creek again. If I lived during this time in history, I would want to live in this town! I love the cast of characters that live in this town! In this book we get to meet four more people! First we meet Marlys and Sam. At first Marlys (love the name, by the way!) was a little hard to get to know but then you learn her back story and you understand why she acts the way she does! She's a doctor of "alternative" medicine - very strange in those days! She hopes the people of Cowboy Creek will embrace her and her different ways, especially because she's a woman. Imagine her surprise when she discovers her ex-fiancée, Sam, lives in the same western town! Their story is fun and sweet! Sam is a newspaper guy with a young son and I immediately loved him! His son is adorable too!
The other couple we meet is Beatrix and Colton. Beatrix's story is very compelling! She speaks very little English and has only come to America because she is an unwed mother and was shamed in her country. This is two novellas that are stand alone novellas, yet I love the Cowboy creek series and would encourage you to read them all, Want Ad Wedding, Special Delivery Baby and Bride by Arrangement. You will fall in love with all those in Cowboy Creek.
Mistletoe Reunion - We meet the determined and sometimes a little awkward, Dr. Marlys Boyd. Her methods are not always typical yet her heart is in the right place. When she comes to Cowboy Creek to start her practice she is not expecting to run into a man from her past. Is God leading her in a direction she is totally unprepared for or is there another choice?
Sam Mason is a father and writer. He is trying to build a relationship with his young son and start a new life in Cowboy Creek. When the one woman who hurt his pride and heart enters his life again, can he become friends only?
I loved the story of Marlys and Sam. Their history, determination, friendship and wanting Gods will. With all its twist and turns this is a great read.

I so enjoyed getting back to Cowboy Creek and meeting some more ladies that have come to town, along with the ones that are already here and settled down.
Cheryl tells of Marlys Boyd a doctor that is a woman-does her work with herbs and comnon sense, she has chose to move west hoping to be accepted better in her profession. Who would have thought she would run into the man she had been engaged to and broke the engagement wanting to pursue her education and become a doctor....She cared for him but also wanted to be more then a wife.
Sherri writes about a mail order bride coming to wed as she is pregnant and wants her child to have a name. The trip is hard on her and soon she is in labor before she meets the husband to be. The midwife sees she is in trouble and when she only speaks German ,she calls in Colton Werner to help with the language barrier. He is the larger then life blacksmith in town but has a heart of gold and when he sees the woman may die and knowing her intended is already dead,he steps in to marry her so the child will have a name.
When Beatrix Haa's sees how this man who knows her language and has a heart to help her she garners strength to get better and delivers a son, Colton names him for a brother that had died-Joseph. This is a different book because it is two stories within one book. They are both enjoyable and heartfelt.
Ms. St. John writes about a female Homeopathic Doctor beginning her practice in Cowboy Creek. Dr. Boyd is knowledgeable about herbs, salves, natural minerals and people in general. After having fought her father to get her education and struggling to open a practice, she is patient, kind and energetic. Dr. Marlys Boyd is a force to be reckoned with when she sets her mind to a project. Because she speaks several languages, she has her heart set on a visit to the Cheyenne village. She needs a guide and off she goes to learn more healing.
The other story, by Ms. Shackelford, coincides with the same time frame but different main characters. The Ferrier is a large man named Colton Werner. The Midwife, Leah, takes over and the hours of difficult delivery with this tired and distraught woman is memorable and near tragic as baby Joseph is born.
Both stories are delightful and full of energy and great adventure. I was privileged to receive an early copy and assure fans of Christian books that this is definitely worth your time and energy. I feel personally better after having taken the time to read these stories.
Ms. St. John writes about a female Homeopathic Doctor beginning her practice in Cowboy Creek. Dr. Boyd is knowledgeable about herbs, salves, natural minerals and people in general. After having fought her father to get her education and struggling to open a practice, she is patient, kind and energetic. Dr. Marlys Boyd is a force to be reckoned with when she sets her mind to a project. Because she speaks several languages, she has her heart set on a visit to the Cheyenne village. She needs a guide and off she goes to learn more healing.
The other story, by Ms. Shackelford, coincides with the same time frame but different main characters. The Ferrier is a large man named Colton Werner. Mistletoe Reunion Review: Unfortunately this is one of those rare books that I didn't find myself enjoying. It was nice enough to say that it was okay but I really couldn't get into it. I thought it was a because I don't find myself drawn to historical books but I've been branching out when it comes to that and I don't think that's it. I figured since it was supposed to be holiday themed I would give this book a chance. When it comes to reading I don't feel like I should force myself to read books that I do not enjoy. So I wasn't able to finish this book. It was an ok book, it dragged the characters were good. I just didnt find myself enjoying it.

It was fast-paced and jumped right into things it was a pretty good book.I'm not into the idea of mail order brides which upon hearing that it almost turned me off of this book but I decided to give it a fair chance to trudge through and looking past that I did find it pretty good. I enjoyed the characters, it was weird how things turned out at first but it turned out pretty good. Overall a good book.

I love the People of Cowboy Creek & was so happy to have two stories set with the characters that make up this special town. In Mistletoe Reunion, Loved meeting the new doctor in town and to hear how she uses different methods & of course how people did not exactly take to new methods. Add in an ex fiancé & well, the story was what I expected from Cheryl St. John. The next story was one of sadness, hope & love. Sherri Shackleford wrote a story of how everyone deserves a second chance at love but takes us through how to overcome ones past & make a new & better life for themselves & their family.

It was absolutely wonderful to return to Cowboy Creek. From the first page it was like a reunion with beloved friends and meeting new ones.
I loved that the two heroines in this book were strong women who didn't give up on their hopes or dreams in spite of their fathers' cruelty. I also loved the beautiful message that home is where you find love. Love, faith, community, and friendship can heal even the deepest wounds.
I really hope that there will be more Cowboy Creek stories in the future because these characters are so endearing that a reader cannot help but become invested in them.

If you like second chance love stories, Mistletoe Reunion is for you. If you like to read about heroines who are trailblazers, this book is for you. If you like to learn as much as you sigh, Mistletoe is a great read now as well as nearer the Christmas season.

This book is composed of two novellas by two different authors. I'd give the first one a two star and the second one a four star, which makes it difficult to rate the book as a whole.
