El título original, Gracie Lindsay, corresponde al nombre de la joven, cuya vida da el argumento del relato. No obstante, el principal personaje es el tío de Gracie, un cincuentón, casado sin hijos, pastor protestante de una pequeña población escocesa. Ser mediocre, segundón por excelencia debido a su timidez( su carrera eclesiástica se frenó por su incompetencia a la hora de los sermones públicos, balbucea, olvida, etc.), pero, como tal hombre religioso, de profunda moralidad y bondad. Guiado por su humanidad y sus convicciones cristianas, se afana - y lo consigue- que su muy querida sobrina asuma las obligaciones que tiene como madre de una criatura habida en su adolescencia, la cual, para evitar mayor escándalo, su padre- entonces- le obligó a dar en adopción. El lugar de la trama, un pequeño pueblo, hacen el resto: diferenciación de clases, murmuraciones, infundios e incidias...fruto esencialmente de la envidia.

Archibald Joseph Cronin was a Scottish novelist, dramatist, and non-fiction writer who was one of the most renowned storytellers of the twentieth century. His best-known works are The Citadel and The Keys of the Kingdom, both of which were made into Oscar-nominated films. He also created the Dr. Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the long-running BBC television and radio series entitled Dr. Finlay's Casebook.

At 157 pages, "Gracie Lindsay" is more of a novella than a book and so the story is uncomplicated and the characters few.

Gracie is a young woman who, after 'getting in trouble' as a teenager, left town to have her baby, gave it up and moved to India and marriage. This story picks up in 1911 with Gracie back in town newly widowed and quickly raising eyebrows and setting tongues to clicking over her friendly manner with the men.

Her uncle Daniel believes in her and feels that if only her and her son could be reunited than all will come right and Gracie will settle down.

But the question is, does Gracie want to settle down and will her suitors take kindly to a change in attentions? One, at least, will stop at nothing to possess her...

This reminds me of something Warwick Deeping would write, and at the same time I keep thinking of "Goodnight Mr Tom", especially toward the nail-biting end when the excitement picks up.

It was a quick enjoyable read, not necessarily one I will re-read soon but a good palate cleanser and worth the time.

Era în 5 mai 1911 când Daniel Nimmo primi vestea reîntoarcerii lui Gracie Lindsay. În toată acea după-amiază de vară, caldă şi plină de promisiuni, intrase şi ieşise, fără rost, din camera obscură a micului său studio fotografic, pregătindu-se pentru întâlnirea cu doamna Waldie şi cu fiica acesteia, Isabel.

La ora trei după-amiază ele încă nu sosiseră. Îşi închise capacul ceasului de argint şi privi răbdător prin fereastră la strada goală.

Îmbrăcat într-o redingotă veche, prea strâmtă şi scurtă pentru el, cu pantaloni negri, lucioşi, plastron de celuloid şi cravată neagră, Daniel arăta ponosit ― o persoană insignifiantă.

Expresia feţei era gânditoare, absentă, timidă, iar buzele, surprinzător de roşii, strânse, de parcă era gata să fluiere. Nu pentru că Daniel ar fi fluierat ― era prea speriat să nu atragă atenţia asupra lui. Fără îndoială, era un omuleţ liniştit, modest care îşi trăise cei 54 de ani fără a se afirma măcar o singură dată.

Bocănitul ciocanelor de la şantierul naval din apropiere crea o stare de somnolenţă în atmosferă. Se construia un nou vapor cu abur pentru Khedive Line ― o comandă importantă reuşită de proaspătul agent, domnul Harmon, care avea să facă să prospere comerţul în târguşorul Levenford. Întorcându-şi capul, Daniel văzu porţile mari, verde închis, ale şantierului, din zidul cenuşiu, vizavi de localul farmaciei Hay, din colţul străzii.

Pe când privea, o trăsură dădu colţul pe lângă farmacie şi înaintă, hurducăind pe pietrele pavajului. Un moment mai târziu, două femei, scoțându-şi cu greu pălăriile largi şi mânecile din blană de miel din interiorul trăsurii, traversară trotuarul. Soneria sună şi Daniel, dregându-şi glasul, sperând că bâlbâiala, o adevărată pacoste pentru el, nu-i va face necazuri, se duse să le întâmpine.

Doamna Waldie, soţia antreprenorului, intră prima. Avea o statură impunătoare, puţin aplecată în faţă, cu o umbrelă pe braţ, iar gulerul înalt era susţinut de oase de balenă. În spatele ei venea Isabel.

Daniel, încă agitat, se grăbise să le ofere scaune, făcând observaţii despre vreme, iar acum îşi găsise de lucru cu aparatul de fotografiat, în timp ce doamna Waldie, bucuroasă să stea jos ― după plimbarea în cizmele strâmte îl privea cu bunăvoinţă, faţa ei roşie strălucind de sentimente materne.

I had not previously read any books by this author and I was pretty disappointed with the novel. Set in Scotland in the early 1920's, the plot had no depth to it in my mind, and although the ending had an unexpected twist, the rest was pretty mediocre.

In my opinion, this book is about the fact that only death can help to get rid of public censure, but even this does not really help. An emotionally strong novel, albeit small in volume.
