Poetry created by Walker Chandler across several years, and relating to his life and thoughts and events and ideas of those times. Subjects range from the humorous to the nostalgic to the heart-broken. From politics and philosophy to justice and injustice to ... poison ivy?
You are bound to have heard that classic definition of a lawyer: Someone who writes a 50,000-word paper and calls it "a brief." Walker Chandler is a lawyer, but he well understands the value of words. And he beautifully uses words, perhaps especially in his poetry, as in "The Gift," but also in his fiction. Although I've known Walker Chandler for more than 20 years now, I still sit in awed amazement when I read or re-read his works, and that is doubly true for his poetry. "The Gift" is his first poetry collection and last I heard he was working on a second. I look forward to seeing it. And in the meantime I urge everyone to see "The Gift," even if they think poetry is not usually their preference in reading. There is enough variety in subject matter and even in form to satisfy most people.
