The Space Between Us

Rate this book
Avery Callahan, owner of Bounty Books, takes life a bit too seriously. Solid, dedicated, and hard-working, her life revolves around her store. Dating? Who has time for that?

When rumors of the legendary lost treasure resurface, she despairs of all the attention it brings. The treasure is what caused an age old rift between her family and the Burtons and nearly tore her family apart. She’d rather ignore the whole mess, but that’s impossible when the town is in a frenzy.

When Brody Chance shows her attention, she can’t help but roll her eyes. He’s a grown man working at a pizza joint—not her idea of husband material. He’s the last man she’d ever be attracted to, but her heart has different ideas. As she gets to know him, she uncovers a man of many layers, with more depth than she ever imagined.

Maybe the space between them wasn’t so far after all.

The Space Between Us is the second book of the Treasure Harbor Contemporary Christian Romance series and can be read as a standalone.

The Space Between Us: Treasure Harbor Two is by Leah Atwood. It is included in the Treasure Harbor Complete Series set by Leah Atwood, Belle Calhoune, Patricia Pacjac Carroll, Kristen Ethridge and Angel Moore. This series consists of “eight novellas centered around the quest to find the treasure hidden by Drake Burton, in the seventeen-hundreds.” Legend says that the treasure is somewhere near Treasure Harbor, North Carolina. Thousands of treasure seekers have come to Treasure Harbor looking for the treasure. This particular novella deals with PSTD and veterans.
Avery Callahan ran the bookstore in town and ironically did not carry books on treasure. In fact, she avoided anything to do with treasure if she possibly could. Today had been an unusually heavy day for treasure requests and she closed for noon to avoid taking it out on a customer. A slice of pizza would do the trick so she headed for Pirate Pizzeria. She loved the pizza even if she didn’t exactly like the manager, Brody. When he brought her drink to her, she insulted him without thinking. Her waitress, a friend of hers, let her know in no uncertain terms that she had been wrong. Avery has nothing else to do but apologize to Brody when she sees she was wrong.
Brody had come to Treasure Harbor after finishing his last tour of duty with the Marines. He had come her during training and liked the place. A friend gave him a job and he had already made plans to start college in the fall. He had a dream to fulfill and wanted to do it soon. He had been attracted to Avery for a long time but decided he wasn’t going to wait on her to like him. He had things to do. When he finally decides to try treasure hunting to get money to fulfill his dream, Avery is angry. How is he to deal with this?
This book is really good and keeps you interested. It is quick to read and takes you in a different realm of treasure hunting.

A quick read about Brody and Avery. Everyone hunts treasure. But what is that treasure? A means to an end? A reward? Or an achievement to a goal? When it becomes all consuming (like an addiction) is can be very detrimental to life like what happened to Avery's parents and still affects her to this day.

Avery and Brody worked out their issues and can move on with their relationship and with Brody's new house for veterans with PTSD to get some help and rest.

Shot and sweet

This was a short and sweet book, but felt it ended abruptly. Avery, at first it rude and judgmental to Brody but they sort it out. Their relationship is a little lacking and wish it could have been a little more developed.

Story about Brody and Avery. No time for dating, let alone with a pizza guy. Town in a frenzy over rumors of the lost treasure again, what is, is it anything of value. The heart of love is the treasure for these two, if they are willing. Cute story to enjoy.

This is the second book in the series where different authors write about Treasure Harbor. It deals with PTSD and with addictions/obsessions that destroy people & families. Some of my favorite quotes are: "Not much in life that was fair. Just as life wasn't fair, it wasn't written in black & white"; "a child's simplicity in faith could teach many adults lessons"; "the true treasure in Treasure Harbor were the friendships." You will have to read the book to see if the Callahan/Drake Burton treasure is found!

Brody and Avery's story is truly remarkable. The struggles that Avery and her sister went through because of their parents is really sad. Brody is a very special person. The way he is trying to help his fellow soldiers is amazing. Watching Avery and Brody try to become friends and more is special. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. This book deserves a higher rating than a five star review.

Even a bookstore owner can judge a book by its cover

Avery and Brody have a difficult beginning as she seems to look down upon him for only being a pizza shop manager. Even a bookstore owner can judge a book by its cover. Her opinion changes when she learns more about him.

While this was written much better than the first book in the series, the storyline doesn't really hold my interest. I will not be continuing on with the next book.

Good story.

I like a collections of stories with a central theme. This one of several books on missing treasure. Of course it makes one want to read them all.
