Eczema is the most common skin disorder in the industrialized world. Roughly one-fifth of all children today suffer with eczema, some experiencing symptoms so severe that they look like burn victims.
Until now, there has been no real solution to this problem. Steroid creams prescribed by doctors may keep symptoms at bay temporarily, but do not resolve the problem permanently; steroids may also cause topical steroid addiction with horrific consequences, if used over the long-term. And eczema seldom rides alone – it's part of a larger "allergic march." If your child has eczema, chances are that they will also develop food allergies, hay fever, and eventually, asthma.
The good news is that the allergic march can be interrupted – and eczema, along with many other complicated skin conditions, can be resolved. Natural health author Shann Nix Jones healed her own son from eczema and her husband from an MRSA infection even when doctors couldn't help. The staggering revelation that Shann made is that eczema is not actually a skin condition – it's an autoimmune disorder. In order to heal the skin, you have to first heal the gut.
In this book, Shann shares her natural healing wisdom on healing skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and acne, by healing the gut, in particular with the help of the probiotic drink kefir. You will learn astonishing things about new ways to care for your own body, your immune system, and your microbiome – the 2 kg of bacteria that sit inside your gut, and control the appearance and glowing health of your own skin. If you, or anyone you know, have been suffering from an ongoing skin condition, this book is the lifeline you’ve been waiting for.
What is the good skin solution? Drink goat's milk kefir, use goat's kefir products, drink bone broth, avoid sugar and eat slow burning foods. This is essentially a marketing tool for goat's milk kefir and skincare but it makes interesting reading and seems to correspond with current thinking on nutrition. Am I going to rush out and buy some goat's milk kefir? No, but I might consider trying it one day.
When beginning this book, I had already been happily making and drinking milk kefir for several months, so didn't need to be talked into kefir itself. However, this book really aided my understanding of how beneficial it really is, and got me making (and consuming) bone broth again. This is a great read for anyone seeking answers for skin struggles, and gives detailed information on natural, alternative treatment.
The author includes scientific explanations, success stories and testamonials, tips and advice, hope for the suffering, a seven-step healing protocol, and a little narrative about the cells in training, which was super fun. Now I shall always picture the kefir bacteria as the heroic reinforcements in white.
Note: evolutionary point of view mentioned occasionally, and some vague spiritual messages, especially near the end.
Pretty obvious from the get go they are pushing their products to people who are so fed up and vulnerable that will believe anything loosely scientifically related. There were a few, very few points in there that made me think maybe it is right but it was pretty much saying the same thing a few times differently then trying to sell a different range of products. But i got to say as people like myself who have been suffering for years with no permanent cure, i found myself going out and buying a probiotic the next day because i desperately want the claims to be true and want it to work. This is from the book, which made me first go wow that is amazing, then made me think is it true? then I thought this is ridiculous but if it is true it would be pretty amazing. ''Dr. Michelfelder walking in nature boosts our immune system and may even play a role in fighting cancer. Plants emit a chemical called phytoncide that protects them from rotting and insects, and it's theorized that when people breathe in that chemical there's an increase in the level of their natural killer cells, which are part of a person's immune response to cancer." I am not sure about trees curing cancer but I definitely like and believe the sentence below: " When we walk in a forest or park ... our levels of whiteblood cells increase and it also lowers our pulse rate, blood pressure and cortisol."

This book hit my nightstand at the perfect time. I’ve been deep into learning about the microbiome, and The Good Skin Solution added a new layer, skin health. As someone with psoriasis, I’ve known my gut and skin were connected, but this book helped explain the why in a way that finally clicked.
One of the standout parts (and my favorite!) was when the author walks you through your immune system from the perspective of a B cell. It felt like an episode of The Magic School Bus, science-y but super accessible and even fun. She explained what’s going on inside your body when you have conditions like psoriasis or eczema in such a vivid, memorable way.
Now, full disclosure, she’s a goat farmer from Ireland, so kefir is her hero product. It felt like every few pages she was reminding you to drink kefir, think about kefir, maybe become kefir. But I’ll admit, by the end I appreciated that she wasn’t just pushing her own brand. She’s a true believer in its benefits when paired with a healing diet and lifestyle, and honestly? I googled goat kefir and found a bottle waiting for me at Trader Joe’s. So, maybe she’s onto something.
Overall, this book was informative, motivating, and gave me a new perspective on how to support my skin from the inside out.
While I found Jones a little annoying but she writes and communicates ideas well. And this book is easy to understand. I found what she said about the link between skin and gut health very interesting and it made sense to me. That said at the end of the day she runs a business and is trying to sell a product. So you have to take everything with a pinch of salt
I got this book out of the library because I have rosacea . According to Jones this the condition that she find hardest to treat and takes the longest. I did get the impression from this book that its the condition she understands the least. So if you are looking for advice on rosacea you will need to do further research whether you are trying the treatment she recommends or not.
I am an avid fan of Shanon’s, having a continued supply of her Kefir milk. On reading the GSS book, I ordered the Rosemary Kefir soap due to having extremely chapped hands that wouldn’t improve with hand creams (spent lots on them) or antiseptic creams. The soap cleared up my problem within a few days. I haven’t needed hand cream since. I also had a problem with my lips - they have also improved due to the soap. An absolute must for me! I can’t help waxing lyrical about GSS and the products. Thank you so much Shann & family! I hope to visit your farm one day!
There is much good information presented in an interesting manner. According to the author, the key is a human body's microflora (internal and external). She shows us how, through diet and topical applications how to manage these organisms so that we may benefit from the good strains.
I felt that the book was too much of an advertisement campaign for the author's own line of products, and this prevented me from liking this work more.
Good easy read, but she does follow people whom have a history of following bad science. But I will look into incorporating certain items from this book into my daily routine (kefir being one of them). I’ve tried goat milk soap and lotion, and neither is giving me results.
I guess it is true what they say. In order to heal, it starts with the gut.
Nice explanations and recommendation for skin issues and ailments that originate from microbiome imbalances. Will put some of the recommendations in practice.
I enjoyed this book and its friendly yet informative writing style, all about various autoimmune diseases, but I reserve my judgment about its content’s efficacy until I try out the Good Skin Solution (GSS) for myself. Though it is partially advertising for GSS, Jones does support kefir whether or not it is her product, though she tells us to pay mind to the sources because the quality can differ dramatically.
The book talks about eczema, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, etc and also explains the autoimmune disorder mechanisms behind them in the form of a personified story.
Jones also includes lots of tips about why these disorders occur and why she believes kefir used both internally and externally on the body can help alleviate the various disorders.
