Renegade Red, the highly-anticipated sequel to the award-winning, best-selling YA Fantasy debut Shattered Blue, takes off after the explosive ending of The Light Trilogy's thrilling first installment. Rocked by mind-blowing revelations, Noa Sullivan, and the two fae brothers who love her, leap through a Portal into the unknown to rescue Sasha, Noa's magical little sister. But the journey is more deadly and dangerous than any could have predicted.
Action-packed and thrilling, the fever-pitch of Renegade Red never lets up: the trio face crisis after crisis in shocking twists and turns. The Fae world Aurora has changed terribly since the brothers' exile and become a dystopian tyranny that threatens to ensnare and change them all. In a world so dangerous and unpredictable, can Noa find Sasha and survive, even if that means making a heart-breaking choice of who she loves most?

I really enjoyed this instalment. It is almost completely different from book one, but in a really good way. AND that ending, wow!! I literally can not cope with that ending.. can I have book three please?
Renegade Red is the second book in the Light series by Lauren Bird Horowitz. The story started in the first book of the series, Shattered Blue which introduced us to Noa. She and her family were just coming to terms with the death of Noa's older sister Isla. Her mother was barely hanging on and locked herself in her room quite often and her father was trying to return to work. That left Noa often caring for her 3 year old sister Sasha.
When a new student showed up at the school it was instant sparks between Noa and Callum. The sparks though were not what they seemed, Callum is Fae and he needs "Light" from humans which is taken through a touch or kiss. Noa and Callum grew closer as she found out they shared a similar background in which they had just both lost a sibling but Callum was afraid of hurting Noa. Things seemed to be going well until the arrival of Callum's brother Judah.
Renegade Red picked up right after the huge cliffhanger ending of Shattered Blue in which Noa, Callum and Judah entered a portal to the Fae world in an attempt to save young Sasha. As the three fight to survive in the Fae world they also need to come to terms with their feelings for one another and discover the secrets that each had been hiding.
As with the first book in this series I found the writing to be wonderful and the story quite engaging. Shattered Blue certainly was full of twists and turns and plot twists I never saw coming and in Renegade Red that continued on but also in this installment we get a bit more into the magic and abilities with the story being set in the Fae realm as opposed to the first book taking place in the real world.
I certainly have enjoyed this series so far but I would warn to others that there is instant love and a love triangle with the brothers involved as those are sometimes huge turnoffs. With this story though I found that somehow these things just work well in the plot and before you can blink there is another twist to make you question what you know.
Overall, 4.5 stars for this installment, definitely a young adult fantasy series that is worth checking out. Looking forward to seeing where the story heads in book three.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

For Noa and Callum, being together is dangerous, even deadly. From the start, sixteen-year-old Noa senses that the mysterious transfer student to her Monterey boarding school is different. Callum unnerves and intrigues her, and even as she struggles through family tragedy, she’s irresistibly drawn to him. Soon they are bound by his deepest secret: Callum is Fae, banished from another world after a loss hauntingly similar to her own. But in Noa’s world, Callum needs a special human energy, Light, to survive; his body steals it through touch—or a kiss. And Callum’s not the only Fae on the hunt. When Callum is taken, Noa must decide: Will she sacrifice everything to save him? Even if it means learning their love may not be what she thought?

What a read! I am borderline speechless. I guess if I had to sum up my thoughts with just one word it would be WHOOOOAAAA!!!!
I was blown away by the end of the first book, Shattered Blue, but Renegade Red was surprise after surprise. From page one to the very last, Horowitz kept me on toes. Everything about this book was MORE, more surprises, more action, more mystery, more answers... and more questions, and more gorgeous writing and moving poetry. Be prepared for ALL THE FEELS in this addition to The Light Trilogy! I am DYING to know what happens next! Can't wait to get my hands on that final book, etc n though I'm in no way prepared for this series to end.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
"The smell, the feel, intoxicated; she was drunk with pages white, thirsting for ink."
I won an ARC of Renegade Red and I was so stoked. I loved Shattered Blue so much and I was dying to see what happens next in the trilogy. Renegade Red comes in three different covers that you can collect. As you read the book, you'll see how all the different covers fit along with the book. Such a cool concept with the three different covers, so exciting!
One of my favorite things about Shattered Blue is that there is poetry written in the book that connects with the story as well. I was so happy to see that Renegade Red also had poetry included as well. A lot of the lines in the book even had a poetry feel to them. It all flows together nicely and it's one of my favorite things!
"I'm a poet, Judah. Words are sacred."
It was awesome jumping back into the Light Trilogy and getting to read more about the characters that I love, especially my fictional crush Judah! Noa was totally a "girl beast" in this book and it was awesome. She a total bad-ass and I loved it. You get to see a whole new side of Callum and Judah in this book, which I loved. In Renegade Red they are in Aurora, so it was cool getting a glimpse of Judah and Callum's world; the fae world. Being in Aurora meant a ton of new characters! It was exciting to be introduced to new characters. Some you'll love and some you'll really dislike.
Noa, Judah, and Callum are on the hunt to find Noa's sister Sasha and it gets pretty crazy throughout. Renegade Red is a lot darker (and a little creepy) than Shattered Blue was, but I loved that. It was different and cool. Renegade Red is twisted in so many ways and when you think you know what's going on, you have no idea. I thought I had it all figured out and time after time I was shocked and surprised. I wanted to scream and I wanted to throw the book, lol. All in the best way, because it was such a good book.
Overall, Renegade Red was everything I hoped it would be and more. I loved how it all played out and I loved that it kept me on the edge of my seat every single page. Amazing. There are so many twist in this book. The ending, OMG. I am already dying for the third book. Mind-blowing! Your heart will stop and it will shatter. I am still trying to pick up the pieces.
"Love is tricky, and love is strong. Not some flower but a warrior weed, growing in any condition, through any obstacle, surviving froze tundras, pushing up through cracks in stone!"
Renegade Red will be released March 14th, so mark your calendars! If you haven't read Shattered Blue, go pick it up now!

After reading Shattered Blue late in 2015 I was dying to get my hands on the sequel which now has a name and not one, not two, but three stunning covers! AMAZING! Horowitz somehow, someway has topped Shattered Blue with a sequel even more mind-blowing. Consider my heart ripped to shreds. Don't mind the puddle of me on the floor. Bring on the conclusion! After that crazy cliffhanger ending I definitely need the final book as soon as possible. There was so much action and new poems as well, which I loved! Horowitz continues to write beautifully and in such a way that makes it easy to visualize the story and setting in my mind. I fell in love with the main characters even more in this sequel as well as one of the newly introduced characters. I'm getting slightly worried about my SHIP but however Horowitz decides to end this trilogy in the next book, I will continue to ship Noa and Judah forever.
If you haven't picked up a copy of Shattered Blue yet, I suggest you get on that ASAP so you are fully prepared for the release of Renegade Red this coming March!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of Renegade Red!! It has over a year since I read the first book, Shattered Blue and was absolutely thrilled to be granted an Advanced Copy. I literally jumped up with excitement after reading the approved email notification in class!
I binge-read it in over a day. That's how much I loved the book and was glued to my Kindle screen. Renegade Red starts off with a similar note to Shattered Blue. Although it was confusing for the first 20%, it made so much sense in the following chapters, where everything became a lot clearer! This book was filled with lots of action, crazy, heart-stopping and fantastic scenes complete with Horowitz' magical and intriguing writing style. I was throughly impressed with the Fae world although the ending made my heart squeeze. I look forward to Noa's journey in the final book and am rooting for a certain !
I loved last year’s Shattered Blue. The poetry, the drama, the pull Noa felt to both brothers--I was wrapped up and intrigued. And the ending was so unexpected! It was a thrilling ride.
Renegade Red definitely builds on those thrills. As Noa navigates her way through the In-Between, I began to clearly see where her heart truly was oriented--not with either Callum or Judah, but with little sister Sasha, the girl-beast who taught Noa how to fight and be brave just by being herself. Noa’s love for Sasha carries the story, and I loved the depiction of how family love can be true love. The idea of love is thoroughly explored in Renegade Red--what will people do in the name of love? How will their idea of love twist their perspective? Do love triangles actually exist? Is love more powerful than pride and ideology? Noa’s experience in the In-Between and in Aurora was heart-pounding and intense. I found myself gripping my tablet tightly often. The ending was surprising and twisty and left Noa standing on her own two feet, but I loved it even as my heart was breaking for everyone else.
Truly an imaginative, poetic read. I highly recommend the trilogy and can’t wait for next year’s installment.
Gentle Reader Alert: A few mild swears--nothing too shocking.
I received a copy from Netgalley. I was lucky enough to read Shattered Blue when it came out last year, and it did not disappoint.
Lauren Bird Horowitz has done it again! She's given us another hauntingly beautiful, lyrical masterpiece that keep us holding on to the very last word. Renegade Red doesn't sound like other fairy tales, it doesn't read like them, flow like them, it's immersive, raw, emotional. Noa is struggling in a new world of Aurora, suspended between two brother's, and a love for a sister-who is not her sister. Renegade Red changes your perception about what love is, alters the definition it's not just a story with a love triangle. It's a story about a girl, who will do anything with that strength of love to find that sister again. But she also allows her love for Isla, the one she lost forever to make her stronger, she's learning to take the collective grit and power of the women she's connected to a "Girl-beast chain, sister strong, woven tight" to go through her journey and make it to the other side.
I'm really glad I got a chance to read the second book to this series, I highly recommend you give it a chance to pluck it off the shelves. I can't wait to see where Noa and Sasha go next.
I was lucky enough to get an exclusive Renegade Red arc from Lauren Bird Horowitz in exchange for a very honest review and I totally loved it! Renegade Red is the amazing sequel to Shattered Blue picking up in the mysterious land of Aurora. The land filled with segregation separating families including our dashing Fae princes Callum and Judah. So much happens in the book as battles and sorrow leap out from the pages. Lauren Bird Horowitz does it again enticing readers into her book from the very first page.
"Hands trembling, Noah lifted the little book to her face, fanned the pages, breathed in the scent of paper waiting to be filled."
Filled with beautiful poetry as the brave Noa takes on the dangers of being human in a land filled with dangerous and desperate Fae. Still at war with herself on who she will choose the two princes continue to fight for Noa putting all of them at great risk of detection. Horowitz continues to strengthen Noa by unleashing Noa's determination, intelligence, and love for the deteriorating Aurora truly turning her into the girl beast she was always meant to be. The imagery Horowitz unleashes on her readers is completely intoxicating. The world is created like a movie in your mind the further you delve into this dystopian thriller. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of dystopian, thriller, romance, and adventure. But be warned prepare to be filled with conflicting emotions as Horowitz laughs enjoying the taste of the tears of her readers.
--I received a NetGalley eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review-- Renegade Red, the sequel to Shattered Blue, takes the main characters from the mortal world into the fae world, and that world is pretty creepy. At the end of Shattered Blue, the central trio go through a portal, and Red sends them traveling through one dystopian world after another. This book is much darker than Shattered Blue and a pulse-pounder, with superb world-building and a whole host of new fae characters. Emotions run high and warning: there are very sad moments and very scary ones. For me, that made this book even better than the first book. The relationships between the characters take some very shocking turns, with the same trademark oh-shit reveals as Shattered Blue. Five stars.
I have been waiting with bated breath for the sequel to Shattered Blue and am grateful that I got an advance peek. IT BLEW MY MIND. Horowitz weaves poetry and prose into a magical world where you can never predict what will come next. I don't even know how to describe it without giving something up! My best advice is GET IT and READ IT.
Noa will do anything to save her little sister Sasha, even if it means jumping into the dangerous unknown. With Judah and Callum by her side, Noa has many hard choices to make as well as nearly impossible odds to face. Who will be left standing when it is all over?
Oh my Gawd, this book! I had high expectations going into the story because book one is one of my absolute favorites, I will admit that I was kinda sorta worried that I was going to be let down. But, I can report, that I was not. This book was so different than the first book, which was a nice switch. Everything here was twisty, complicated, emotional, poetic, heart-wrenching, dangerous and engaging. I was completely thrown off by how the book started and I had to piece together the story, one little bit at a time, which was challenging and exciting. This review will be a little shorter than normal because I am afraid I might be spoilery and that would ruin the anticipation.
The boys! I want to say that one is evil (bless the Otec!) and the other is good (sigh, the moody Judah), but really they both have good and bad traits and everything is so mixed up. Let's not even mention the alter ego that is Miles, because even I can't keep track of that. I have made my love for Judah know, and I really feel for him, but now I wonder if having such volatile emotions can be more dangerous than anything else...
The freaking end of the book. The ending to the first book was shocking, but the ending to this book felt a little like my heart was ripped out. There were so many terrible and bittersweet bombshells dropped on me that I honestly have no idea what will happen next. I desperately need the third book to see if the pieces of my broken heart can be mended in a way that I can be happy with.
"Love is tricky, and love is strong. Not some flower, but a warrior weed, growing in any condition, through any obstacle, surviving frozen tundras, pushing up through cracks in stone!”
This review contains spoilers for book I!
About: Noa lives the life of an average teenager at the start of volume one, Shattered Blue. But everything changes with the arrival of the Forsythe brothers, Callum and Judah, who are runaways from the Fae realm. Both boys fall in love with Noa, and by the end of book I, secrets (Twists!) have already begun to shift Noa’s feelings between the two brothers.
At the last moment of Shattered Blue, Noa’s little sister slips through Judah Forsythe’s hands and disappears through a portal to Aurora, or faerie; Noa, Callum and Judah step through after her, hoping to find her in Aurora, but OF COURSE that’s not where they end up! So begin The Horowitz Twists…Renegade Red is ya fantasy/paranormal romance written by award-winning author Lauren Bird Horowitz and published March 14th 2017 by Papaloa Press. Advanced Reader Copy.
Thoughts: As usual with the Light trilogy, nothing is as it seems. The first 19% of Renegade Red is one extended twist following Noa’s leap through the portal and it foreshadows the rest of the book in both plot and characterization.
Noa spends most of Renegade Red trying to choose between the Forsythe Fae brothers, and although you may think you have her pinned…just wait! Horowitz has a few surprises for us readers who dare think we know what’s what. The character-development threatens to topple the whole structure of this compelling love triangle (square?). I really have no idea how Horowitz will resolve the romantic tangle—and that’s exactly how I like it!
The boys’ characters develop significantly in this second installment. Judah’s quick-tempered foibles become clearer, along with his passion and quick-thinking; Callum comes across very much the opposite, a more direct, faithful and rule-abiding type, and although he lacks Judah’s strength and flexibility when faced with mental or emotional manipulation, he’s also more the active brother, liking to remain in control so he can protect those he loves.
“As Callum wrapped his arms around her, warmth began to spread from Noa’s chest, radiant from her heart. Little flowers of heat bloomed over her injuries as Callum knit her back together: not just her leg, but her arms, her wrist, her back, her knees.”
SaWOON! I love it when Callum uses his Blue Fae power to heal Noa. So dreamy...
Callum’s proactivity draws me to him as a character—although I also love Judah’s smart-mouthed intelligence, which comes through loud and clear whenever he and Callum argue about the next move to find Noa’s sister in Aurora.
And although Noa seems to lack character development, her strong interiority makes up for it: Horowitz's skilled third-person narration feels just as immediate as first person, and we can feel Noa's desperate drive to find her sister.
As for the stunning poetic quality I loved in book I, it emerges differently, but just as eloquently in book II. Particularly in Noa’s and Callum’s perspectives, Horowitz uses prose to mirror consciousness. She explores Noa's feelings and experiences using metaphoric dream sequences that help Noa make decisions throughout her journey in Aurora. For Callum, bursts of stream of consciousness call attention to his mental state at various important junctures. These techniques emphasize the struggles faced by both characters when challenged by the mental or emotional (Red or Green) Fae powers.
Despite a few minor considerations—I wish we'd gotten more of an overall picture of Aurora; and at 420 pgs, the novel runs a bit long for a romance- and action-centered (rather than worldbuilding-centered) ya fantasy—overall?
Overall: This is the most beautiful, innovative and twisty ya series I can recall reading in recent memory. Though it slows down after the initial twist, Renegade Red picks up the pace again near the middle and stuns again and again with emotionally resonant revelations, legitimate relational dilemmas, harrowing action/problem-solving sequences and smart, gorgeous writing.
I can’t wait to read book III!!
Recommended To: Highly recommended for fans of ya fantasy that moves quickly and doesn’t linger over worldbuilding. Anyone who wants the perfect blend between a strong, swoonworthy ya fantasy and sparkling literary elements.
Thank you so much to Lauren Bird Horowitz, Papaloa Press and Netgalley for the Advanced Read Copy. I loved it!

Renegade Red by Lauren Bird Horowitz is the second book in the Light Trilogy. It was fast paced and definitely kept you guessing. The whole book was a long epic journey that ends in love and confusion. I cannot wait for the next book!! I want to find out what happens!!
I received a copy of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
I was lucky enough to receive an arc for Renegade Red and I'm so happy I got a sneak peek at the book I've been waiting around a year for! I read Shattered Blue as an arc last year and went on to buy it in paperback and ebook. I fell in love with the writing and characters in book one and Lauren Bird Horowitz didn't let us down in book 2!
I absolutely LOVED the second installment in this series! Bird is a phenomenal world builder. I felt like I was a part of the story. My heart was racing and breaking with all the new revelations. And in the end I was left utterly speechless.
There isn't much detail I can give that won't be a spoiler. But we get more insight into each of the characters and details of their pasts the show us deeper into their souls. Details from book one are woven seamlessly throughout the story and expanded on. Some of my "suspicions" from book one were actually true but in a way I never could have anticipated.
Ultimately, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Each page captured me and wouldn't let me go! Love the characters, love the story, and the SURPRISES! The writing carries you along on a sometimes lyrically peaceful, sometimes passionately tumultuous river with frequent rip roaring rapids. This is the second book in this series, and I really don't know why it is not more well-known. In this chapter, the main character Noa Sullivan brings her fae suitors with her into the unknown, and together they battle to try to find a missing sister. It is decidedly darker, and more delicious, than the gripping first book, Shattered Blue. Both are on my re-read shelf!
I received an ARC for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Papaloa Press.
I fell in love with this series with the first book, Shattered Blue and I have been waiting for this second book. Im a pretty busy mom so reading time is hard (I feel like I always say this in book reviews, haha, but it is true, right moms?) but it was well worth it for this book. I thought the first book had a lot of surprises but this one has a lot more. A lot more of everything: love, danger, magic, and shocks! i actually read it really fast, which shows how much i liked it because i have a new toddler in my life this year. Renegade Red follows the same characters to Aurora, the fae world, and everything changes into a roller coaster. I even found my ship changing in the process!!!! its hard to put a summary of the plot wihtout ruining it, so i will stop at this: read this book. this series is so much fun and with the new book, dark and awesome too.
I got this book from NetGalley in ex change for a review. All opinions are my own.
I Received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest Review.
I was not sure going in that this book could live up to the surprises of the first Light Trilogy book, Shattered Blue, but I was wrong! Every time I thought I could predict what would happen, I was completely surprised. I really like that in a book. Renegade Red starts off where Shattered Blue left off, and the first section itself is almost a mini-novel (I can't say more because of spoilers). Then the heroes-- Callum, Judah, and Noa-- get into some serious magical danger in the fae world, and it almost felt like a thriller movie. They are seeking Sasha, Noa's sister, but in the end, it seems like they are searching more for the truth between them all. The whole book made me want to re-read Shattered Blue with new eyes. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens in the end!
My heart can't take anymore!! I don't even know what I want after reading this book. Judah or Callum, gahhhh who can choose?! All these characters in The Light Trilogy are so multidimensional. Each time you think you have one of them figured out....BAM! Some big twist sends you for a tailspin and leaves you questioning EVERYTHING you thought you knew and wanted. Tons of character growth in this book, which was nice. The epic fantasy and dystopian elements was a huge bonus for me too. I highly recommend everyone give this trilogy a try, the writing is beautiful, the characters are some of my absolute favorites, and it hops across multiple genres sit it truly has a little something for everyone.
Thank you to the publisher and the author for giving me an advance release copy for my honest review.
Renegade Red is like Shattered Blue on steroids. Same unique voice (and poetry sprinkled in), but so much more magic, action and twists. The cliffhanger is epic. The adventure had me on the edge of my seat-- and that ending. No spoilers, but brace yourself. **I Received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
I was so excited to get approved for an ARC of Renegade Red from the publisher! I couldn't wait to dive back into the world this author created. Little did I know would get so much more than I could have ever imagined! This book was bursting with captivating worlds, characters and mind-bending twists! Renegade Red is a fast-paced ride that you'll never want to end!
Review contains slight spoilers to the ending of Shattered Blue
Disclaimer: I was provided an advanced reader's copy from the author and publisher for an honest review.
i'm going to attempt to give a quick summary/set- up without giving out crucial details so please forgive me if I mess it up
In Renegade Red, Lauren Bird Horowitz continues the Light Trilogy immediately where Shattered Blue left off. Noa, Callum, and Judah step in through the unstable, collapsing portal to the faerie world of Aurora. Their mission? Find and bring back Noa's sister Sasha . Noa finds herself in glorious Aurora where fae of many color-lines live and breathe light which is the essence of their being. The three of them quickly realize that Sasha is not immediately waiting for them on the other side and is nowhere to be seen. All is not what it seems, nor is it the same Aurora the boys remember leaving. All of them are left going into the search and rescue blind. Can Sasha be saved? Will the trio find her before the Clear dictator does? Once they get to the faery world of Aurora, a more sinister plot arises, hidden secrets are revealed and new characters with their own questionable motives make for a high intensity flow of emotions. Told in three alternating perspectives, you're not really sure who to trust--perhaps not even the MC herself. With the same poetic atmosphere as it's predecessor, Renegade Red is surely a novel you don't want to miss out on!
My thoughts(contains spoilers): I absolutely loved this book, maybe even more than Shattered Blue. . Of course there was love triangle teenaged drama and angst and a whole new set of problems revealed at the end that complicates things even more but I still loved it. Nothing really felt forced as far as plot and character goes. There were many sad and intense parts. I will still cry about Marena. The ending threw me for a loop, again, and it left me wanting more!
Beautifully written with a poetic soul. I found myself immersed in Horowitz' words. Renegade Red isn’t just a sequel. It is the continuation of a magical story that weaves itself into your heart, leaving you breathless as you wait for more.
“Love is tricky, and love is strong. Not some flower but a warrior weed. Growing in any condition, through any obstacles, surviving frozen tundras, pushing up through cracks in stone.”- The Seer
Dystopian of Insurgent involved, Horowitz outdone herself picturing the In-between & Aurora realms unlike anything you've ever read. The end is STUNNER. THIS INSTALLMENT WILL LEAVE YOU SPELLBOUND.
I was lucky to WON this ARC, this book is from the heart!
Renegade Red was an enjoyable read that introduced more action, new characters, and more gore than Shattered Blue. The majority of the book takes place in Aurora, where Noa discovers a lot of new information, especially about Callum and Judah, and is kind of left not knowing what to believe and what's real and what isn't. It also ends with quite a surprise, so I can't wait for the third book!
I received an early copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
