From the author/illustrator of Hector and Hummingbird , a friendship story between a girl and the rarest of a doughnut-loving dodo!
Martha is absolutely cuckoo for birds! She's identified every single bird in the woods behind her house. But one day she sees a bird unlike any other... Can that really be a dodo? It turns out that dodos make very good friends (and are crazy about doughnuts!). But when Martha's secret gets out and the whole town wants to see her new friend, will Martha have to say good-bye to Mr. Dodo?
I've read this book so many times and just love Martha's love for birds and her will to protect Mr. Dodo from becoming re-extinct! The illustrations are brilliant and feel kind of like a vintage, mid-century storybook!
I picked this for a special bird-themed storytime next week!
Did you know dodos went extinct because people had hunted them and eaten them for dinner? That they're terrible at playing snap? That they love donuts?
Hello, Mr. Doodle is about this little girl named Martha who finds a Dodo bird! She is so excited when she meets him, and she wants to know everything about him! So, she does all of her research and she learns that he is an extinct bird. She doesn't want to risk losing him, so she doesn't tell anyone about him. One day, she accidentally tells the postman that she has a Dodo bird. Immediately she hides the bird before flocks of people come to her house asking about the bird. The bird is gone, so Martha fears he was just a part of her imagination. At the end of the book, Martha finds Mr. Dodo and he has a family! I think this book is so sweet! This little girl just wants to protect her new friend. I couldn't stop saying "aww" as I flipped through the pages. The books illustrations were so pretty and colorful. I would definitely put this book on a coffee table! I think there are several ways this book could be used in a classroom. 1. Extinction is a word a lot of elementary kids might not know. This book would go along perfectly with a lesson that is covering that topic. 2. Hello, Mr. Dodo! would be a great book to help teach about birds! The last page is dedicated to different kinds of birds!
This brightly colored, imaginative story is perfect for storytime read alouds. The illustrations are whimsical and are reminiscent of the styles of the 1960's. Children will enjoy Martha and her passion for bird watching. Listeners can even look for extra birds in the story - especially in Martha's room. While a bird list is included at the end, the fact that they are in the same illustrations of the story makes them a bit difficult to identify. On the other hand, it might encourage readers and listeners to learn more about the birds in other resources. I recommend this fun title for an additional purchase in both school and public libraries.
Martha found a dodo living in the woods behind her house. She kept him a secret so no one would come and hurt him. But one day her secret slipped out and Martha had to pretend that the dodo was imaginary so the news media and the zookeepers would leave her alone. When she finally went back into the woods to visit her dodo, she found out he had been keeping a secret too... there was a Mrs. Dodo and an egg!
This book was really cute. It’s about a girl who finds dodo bird and makes it her best friend. But one day, her secret slips out and the entire town comes to see the extinct bird. She will have to be quick thinking to fool this crowd. The illustrations are old school. They remind me of children’s books from the 60’s with their lines, and the colors. It’s wonderful to see an artist aping the classics in modern stories.
Martha loves birds, os one day when she meets and makes friends with a Dodo, a species supposed to be extinct, in the woods behind her house, she resolves to keep him a secret to keep him safe - but sometimes it is hard to keep a big secret.
This is an adorable story with vibrant, colorful illustrations.
Retro illustrations (neon orange, yellow, teal). Girl finds a dodo but learns they're extinct so tries to keep him a secret so he'll be safe. She accidentally tells the postman and he tells others who all show up at her house. She shows them her INVISIBLE/IMAGINARY dodo so the crowds will lose interest and leave. She searches for the dodo and finds him...with a female dodo...and egg :)
this is a fictional story about a little girl and her imaginary donut eating dodo bird. While it does touch on that the dodo is extinct there is very little information about the dodo in the story. We enjoyed the cute story about the little girl and the dodo but would caution anyone looking for dodo facts to try another book.
I like this book: a person for looks for a dodo, and when it disappears, he found it somewhere. But I don't know where because we read this only one time.
