Dr. Izabella Wentz, the author of the phenomenal New York Times bestseller Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, returns with a long-awaited, groundbreaking prescription to reverse the symptoms of this serious autoimmune condition that is becoming one of the country’s fastest growing diseases.
More than thirty-five million Americans currently suffer from Hashimoto’s—an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland and causes the body to attack its own cells. To alleviate the symptoms of this debilitating condition—including chronic cough, acid reflux, IBS, allergies, chronic pain, hair loss, brain fog, and forgetfulness—patients are often prescribed synthetic hormones that have numerous life-altering side effects.
But there is a better way.
Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s at twenty-seven, pharmacist Dr. Izabella Wentz knows first-hand the effects of the disease, as well as the value—and limitations—of medication. The key to improved health, she argues, involves lifestyle interventions. In Hashimoto’s Protocol, she outlines a proven treatment that has helped thousands heal and many others feel better—in as fast as ninety days.
Drawing on her own personal experience as well as her work consulting with thousands of patients, Hashimoto’s Protocol offers a practical pathway for healing and reversing the autoimmune damage at the root of the disease. The first step is a quick-start two-week detox that includes foods to eat and inflammatory foods to avoid, advice on supplements to support the liver, and an adrenal recovery plan. Next, readers create a personalized plan with foods, supplements, and other lifestyle interventions tailored to their body’s own unique Hashimoto’s triggers, which they can identify using self-tests included in the book. Hashimoto’s Protocol also features original recipes.
Grounded in the latest science, Hashimoto’s Protocol is the first book to offer a proven protocol by an acknowledged expert in the field to treat this condition and help sufferers reclaim their lives.
Dr. Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP is an internationally acclaimed thyroid specialist and licensed pharmacist who has dedicated her career to addressing the root causes of autoimmune thyroid disease after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in 2009.
Dr. Wentz is the author of the New York Times bestselling patient guide Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause and the new #1 New York Times bestselling protocol-based book Hashimoto’s Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back.
As a patient advocate, researcher, clinician and educator, Dr. Wentz is committed to raising awareness on how to overcome autoimmune thyroid disease through The Thyroid Secret Documentary Series, the Hashimoto’s Institute Practitioner Training, and her international consulting and speaking services offered to both patients and healthcare professionals.
Don't waste your time. On the basis of little more than anecdotal conversations, Wentz shows she really has no productive suggestions on how to deal with Hashimoto's. Windy to just fill pages. No clinical data to back her claims. For example, after one hundred pages of talking around and around Hashimoto's, she wonders if there are any foods that trigger your symptoms, and then proceeds to list nearly every food under the sun. She has no idea if there's a mechanism behind any of this - she just tells you to try an unbelievably broad shotgun approach and maybe, just maybe, something will help. Her message in a nutshell: "Lotsa luck."
I read Dr Wentz’s first book, The Root Cause, 4 years ago. It was the first book I had read not only by a professional who understands that we need to address the autoimmune aspect but is also a patient herself. I believe this gives her a unique perspective and insight because she truly understands what it is to live with this condition on a day to day basis. Hashimoto’s Protocol is an ideal companion to that first book. It allows the reader to take all the information from the first book and to develop their own, personal 12 week program to recover their health and discover their own root cause. For those who are also newly diagnosed and/or new to AIP, this is an excellent introduction and takes you through easy to follow steps to getting the right testing, finding a practitioner who can help you to step by step meal prep to ensure you stay on track with all aspects of your protocol. By learning how to support your liver, adrenals and improve your gut health, to the more advanced protocols, it is a formula to enable your body to start resetting and healing itself.
Apparently, I won't get better because I'm already guilty of "attaching to a dogma that prevents [me] from getting better." Overall, this book clashes with my belief in intuitive eating. Her restrictive diet (Paleo -- no grains at all) and reliance on extreme amounts of supplements had me balking. If you still feel tired and crave carbs, try this supplement instead. Um, no. I know to avoid gluten, soy, and now dairy, obviously, but rice? Corn? Potatoes? Again, no. Vegetables and meat sound like a bleak, joyless existence that would trigger terrible dieting/binging consequences.
That being said, there were good aspects. It helped me learn more about Hashimoto's itself and helped me focus on my main trigger (adrenal fatigue) while also offering some hope: "There is some evidence that celiac disease is permanent, while gluten intolerance, on he other hand, may be reversible."
Also, what medicalish book uses so many exclamation points? Dear God, have I stumbled into self hell -- I mean, help?!
Excuse me while I go take a nap. It's one definite protocol that I can get behind.
Last year, I have read Dr. Wentz's first book that helped me get on the right track to reverse my (then) very severe Hashimoto symptoms. It's almost a miracle that I am symptom-free nowadays, and doctors don't recognize me anymore! As expected, this new book from Dr. Wentz is so well explained - if you are lost with your thyroid condition and don't know where to start from, this book will take you by the hand and guide you into remission. There is hope - if I did it, everybody can do it :)
While this was an informative, helpful read, I found myself tiring of it about halfway through and had to really push myself to finish.
It became quite repetitive, and didn't seem very well organized (Wentz would begin on a topic but then say "but we'll get into that more later," and completely change topics). Because of the repetition, it was way too long, despite the fact that Wentz was constantly referring readers to her website for more complete information.
I also became frustrated with her attitude at different points throughout the book. For instance, she seemed to minimize the enormity and difficulty of the financial expense required to recover from chronic illness. She never mentions that financial stress could have been a major trigger in developing Hashimoto's in the first place (though she mentions many other stresses) and never touches on the fact that chronic illness may be keeping people from holding a job. Apparently, she managed to keep her job (and keep in mind, she's a pharmacist...) even throughout her illness and her husband also works, so it seems as if she has not struggled financially and can't understand why anyone else would. She even berates those who refuse to pay for treatments that their insurance won't cover - never acknowledging that these people may not have any cash to do so! It was such a huge oversight that I think will alienate many readers, as it did me.
(Note: There were also several references to evolution.)
Yikes. If you truly followed her protocol it would cost thousands in supplements per year, hundreds of dollars a month just for your daily juicing, an unspecified amount of money for monthly blood panels and in the end your basically just living a more restrictive and expensive version of the AIP diet. It didn’t surprise me to find out that Dr. Wentz (who is a pharmacist and NOT an MD) owns her own line of supplements, which she argues she created not for money but only because most supplements out there contain additives that cause Hashi flair-ups. This book has disordered eating red flags, snake oil salesman red flags, and subtle anti-vax red flags (although she doesn’t out right say it, but one can easily draw anti-vax parallels). Also, it describes a protocol which is only financially accessible to less than 10% of the US population. In conclusion, yikes.
I was deeply disappointed by this book. I had Hashimoto's disease, apparently, about 15 years ago and my thyroid packed it in. Of all the chronic problems, the doctors tell you, this is a good one to have because all you have to do is take Levothyroxin, a synthetic replacement for the good stuff your thyroid puts out, and you're as good as new. And I suppose the point is that 15 years on, I'm still alive. But when you become hypothyroid, you develop a whole host of annoying symptoms that your doctor will tell you "may or may not" be because of the thyroid issue. All of them are also associated with normal aging, and they're fairly diffuse, so it's very hard to get specific about what's wrong and what needs to be done. And Levothyroxin doesn't really help. Hence, I read Hashimoto's Protocol with real hope that I might be able to do something about all those symptoms. But all the author does is take every single fad diet issue that's out there now, apply it to the thyroid, and suggest that, for example, eliminating gluten, sugar, dairy, and all the other current faves will suddenly fix your thyroid. Once she's done turning you into a paleo-veggie eater, then she tackles all the environmental pollutants that might be (also) causing your issues. By the time I was 3/4 of the way through the book, I had resigned myself to living in bubble wrap in the depths of some cave deep in the desert, with only a shaman for company. I call BS on this one.
I won this in a GOODREADS giveaway -- Loads of good information presented in an easy-to-reference layout. No complex medical jargon to decipher as any given are explained. Appears well researched with a detailed bibliography. I will be passing this on to a friend who can really use this now...
This book will help you to figure out why your immune system may be attacking your thyroid and how to prevent further damage instead of just popping a pill until the day comes that your body has completely obliterated this vital organ of the body, leaving you become completely dependent on the medical system. This book teaches you that true health and wellness comes from within. The lifestyle interventions that you can make are the real path to lifelong wellness. I only wish I knew this information sooner as I blindly followed a doctor’s advice for almost 20 years, took a pill and did not think about the things that I could do to help my body heal itself.
This book outlines specific protocols supporting the liver, adrenal glands and the gut with specific recipes, supplements to take and lifestyle interventions that will help you on your path to improved wellness. I realized that I needed to be a more active part of my medical team and this book helps to better prepare me for that role.
The most important thing about this book is that it offers hope for remission as she often states that your genes are not your destiny. That hope is what can ignite a passion in you to make changes that only you can implement in your life. I speak from experience when I say that it is so much better to have that hope for feeling better than to just suffer passively with debilitating fatigue, horrible skin, your hair falling out in clumps, terrible heartburn, always being cold and being unable to lose weight.
Dr. Wentz’s protocols have worked for thousands of people and they can work for you too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has Hashimoto’s Disease, even if you think that you have it under control. It is always good to just see what kind of new information is out there.
Hashimoto’s Protocol (as well as Dr. Wentz’s other book, The Root Cause) is leaps and bounds ahead of what any practitioner has relayed to me throughout my experience with Hashimoto’s. With the information in her first book I was able to get my antibodies down into “normal” on the reference range. I cannot stress enough: SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK. I’m so excited to start implementing the knowledge she has imparted on her readers in the latest book.
The book is easy to read (it’s not like a textbook), yet there is so much helpful information - Dr. Wentz stays up-to-date on the latest studies and medical research, which is rare in medicine these days. It’s divided into fundamental protocols (where you can get the most bang for your buck) and advanced protocols (most effective after addressing the fundamental problems you may have). The protocols have assessments that help you individualize your approach.
If you or loved one have thyroid disease, there is history of the disease in your family or you have any autoimmune disease this book can help you.
Any endocrinologists, primary care physicians and alternative practitioners should read this as well – you can help your patients more than you even know!
I highly recommend HASHIMOTO'S PROTOCOL by Dr. Izabella Wentz. She proves time and time again her expertise in the arena of autoimmune thyroid disease. This book contains proven protocols to follow to help people reach wellness. I have read other books by Dr. Wentz and this is another winner. I have been struggling with Hashimoto's for 13 years and the I really wish Dr. Wentz's books were around then! The amount of things I have learned from her books surpasses all other of their kind.
It's nice to know that someone out there is advocating for patients and offering tools and resources for those who are overwhelmed by their diagnosis (or by their symptoms of an unknown disease). I'm certain that HASHIMOTO'S PROTOCOL will be the answer to countless individuals have been looking for! I know I'm grateful to have found it!
THANK YOU IZABELLA WENTZ FOR CONTINUALLY PRODUCING QUALITY, CUTTING-EDGE INFO!
Finally, somebody has provided specific protocols for addressing Hashimoto's in a way that makes it easy for patients to take action, and implement the interventions! This book is so well written and easy to follow - which is key for those of us with Hashi's brain fog ; )
Dr. Wentz outlines the fundamental protocols (Liver Support, Adrenals, and Gut Balance) and explains exactly what is needed to start feeling better, with step-by-step instructions, within a matter of weeks. There are assessments for each topic to help determine what your issues are, as well as advanced protocols for those of us who have more complicated root causes. I love all of Dr. Wentz's work, and highly encourage anyone with Hashimoto's to get this book!
This book did not live up to much of the hype. The author at times is scattered all over the place. Too much ramble, not enough facts. Also, if you are hoping for a concise 90 day meal plan for helping with Hashitmoto's, don't bother. Spoiler alert, but for that, she refers you about halfway into the book to her website where you can pay more money and get various Paleo diet recipes, and meal plans. If you are new to Hashimoto's she does do a good job of validating common experiences that many of us suffer from that are automatically written off by doctors.
However, a lot of the actual medical advice she offers regarding various tests are not going to be within reach for the majority of people who have a primary doctor and normal insurance, and she seems utterly clueless to that. If you are rich enough that you don't have insurances to deal with, can pay out of pocket and choose your doctor and maybe even pay cash for various testing, then some of her advice becomes very useful, but for the average person, with a normal doctor, most of us can't even get our primary's to refer us to an endocrinologist, let alone go in and demand specific tests, and medications outside of the norm.
This woman is brilliant in the capitalism sense. I give her props for selling an over-priced book that essentially helps market her website, her meal plans, and her own line of supplements. While it was not a useful read for me, I'll still put it in the helpful category.
Two years ago I added this book to my to-read list. Sadly, I waited until last week to pick it up and read it. My loss, and yours too if you wait. This is a must read for all women. Either you need it or someone you know needs it. We must educate ourselves about the role of the thyroid and the consequences when it is under attack. Only then can we take positive action with our own individual health.
The incidence of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is high and increasing all the time and still it goes undiagnosed in high numbers. By understanding the impact on our long term health we can take steps with food, environment, and medicine to help with Hashimoto’s - prevent it, manage it, or reverse it - and thereby live full lives. Obviously I wish I had taken this more seriously before now.
Thanks to Izabella Wentz for her commitment to people and her thorough research and well-defined protocols in this and her other two books on the topic.
This book is a godsend. I often feel overloaded with info I read in books about Hashimoto's, but I love that this is such a practical guide with a step-by-step approach to addressing different issues and root causes. It's really a program in book format!
While I definitely appreciate Dr. Wentz's encouragement for every patient to find their own root cause, sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed and consumed by brain fog, and all I want is to be told what to do next.. and this book is perfect for that! I'm just grateful there's an expert who's been there and is willing to share the exact steps she went through to get into remission. It's really inspiring. Thank you, Dr. Wentz, for being your own guinea pig and sharing your results with us. I can really feel the heart and passion that went into making this book, and I'm excited to put this into action!
I LOVE this book and absolutely recommend it to people who have thyroid issues or who are struggling with Hashimoto's. I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Wentz speak at a book signing outside Chicago. She is the real deal! She cares so much about her readers, answered everyone's questions, met every single person at the event, and shared all her experience and research. If you ever have a chance to meet her in person or attend an event where she speaks, I highly recommend it. Thank you Dr. Wentz!!
I listened to this and it has so many places I want to see in print I’m going to have to buy a physical copy. It’s very in-depth and has a ton of information (like drinking from a firehouse). It is targeted to people with Hadhimotos, but it’s really more like a general guide to healthy living, which is never a bad thing.
I may pick this book up again in the future, but the writing and references to how “we will talk about that later in the book” we’re overwhelming and eventually annoying. Tell me something NOW! It was also seemingly contradictory in many ways in regard to diet and protocols and I didn’t have the energy to try and decipher which suggestions and supplements and foods to eat or not eat, what order to implement things, etc. It was just overall a confusing book. Her website is a MUCH more valuable resource.
Here’s my suggestion for anyone in the midst of a hashimoto’s diagnosis, or any other auto-immune disease process-find a functional medicine doc and read about AIP. Also, invest your time and energy in serious stress reduction practices. Trust your intuition-you know your body the best. Good luck 💕
This book can potentially do more harm than good. Even the author admits her research is flawed. There’s a lot of ~scary~ “facts” presented with in. Most of the ‘studies’ sited are ‘suggestive’ of the conclusions she herself draws. Also, I can’t take medical advice from someone who attributes their personality traits to astrology. Admittedly, I’m not the target audience for this book, because I don’t value shopping for shoes more than my health, and I understand the concept of ‘reducing by half’ without needing the author to go into detail multiple times. But seriously, ‘if you have heart palpitations, consider giving up coffee’ is the quality of advice given here.
This is probably the best book about Hashimoto's thyroiditis I've read so far--a clear, concise description of what's going wrong in the body and practical suggestions to try to correct the process with diet, supplements and lifestyle changes. Towards the end, under the "advanced protocol" chapter, she did lose me a bit with some recommendations for alternative tests and treatments, but the core of the book was solid and realistic. I would recommend this to everyone with Hashimoto's.
Huge amount of anti-scientific crap. Leaky gut, detox, treat yourself with the antibiotics- it's all there. Read only with cold head and if you can differ really useful stuff from everything else.
Hashimoto's Protocol is a very informative read. I learned a lot about how Hashimoto’s works, how it impacts the body, and how interconnected thyroid health is with overall wellness. The book offers a wealth of advice on nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted strategies that could benefit not just those with thyroid issues, but anyone looking to improve their general health. The author presents a structured 90-day plan and gives readers a lot of hope that following her protocol precisely can significantly reduce—or even eliminate—symptoms. While the optimism is encouraging, it does raise some questions about how universally effective the plan truly is, given the complexity of autoimmune conditions. Overall, it’s a valuable resource filled with practical, actionable advice, but it’s important to approach it with a mindset of learning and adapting rather than expecting guaranteed results.
So many good tips and tricks! I’ve had Hashimoto’s for a year now (of course probably way longer) and it’s been so frustrating! Losing weight is a joke, I sleep an insane amount in order to feel normal, I’m constantly freezing to where my skin is blue and I can’t function, I get unusual/insane fatigue (I can literally pass out anytime anywhere), experience brain fog, I’ve become so sensitive to many foods, have dry skin, thinning eyebrows, and the list goes on and on and on 😑 The good news is lifestyles changes with medicine have helped tremendously! This book inspires me to take on more changes and start improving my health more! Not sure about removing coffee though I don’t think I can with that one 😂 but so many big and small things I can start doing/removing to get back to a somewhat normal!
This book started off very interesting. It helped me a lot to understand Hashimoto's, and it's super informative. I kept underlining and marking most of the first half. However, I lost interest when the author gave excessive advice about taking and relying on supplements. She made it seem like supplements are the solution and help a lot. On the contrary, many researchers state that synthetic supplements or medications can sometimes have negative effects, so I'm not going to rely on supplements. Also, she mostly tells you to cut gluten, dairy, nuts, sugar, caffeine, potatoes and everything literally, for what? I don’t think this is the solution of course when i cut most of the food im going to feel better cz nowadays everything is polluted and there’s toxicity in everything around us. We’re in 2025, life isnt the same as before.
I’m currently reading Dicken’s A Christmas Carol / The Chimes / The Cricket on the Hearth and that influences this review - bah humbug. Lots of fancy talk. Oh woe is me, I am so brilliant that I figured it all out. This book might have useful tips mixed with poor evidence but I will not know. First step is to have a Canadian provided who will consider any of this. It took me 20?? Years to find someone to add Cytomel.
It ended in a jumbled mess of lab names (not even test names but actual USA labs) and comments about do this if this but never if this.
